What is the coolest thing in Ultimate Magic?

I don't have the book (yet!) but I'm so very eager for it.

I'm also curious to hear just what the assembled hordes of Paizo ocnsider to be the very best, most fun, coolest and/or most bizarre thing in Ultimate Magic -- be it a spell, archetype, the Magus class, or whatever.

Some explanation as to what makes it so great would be appreciated too, please.

And congratulations to everyone who's already got a copy!

Well, I need one.. why should a druid summon an aberration O_o

I found by flavour and by awesome far better Summon Elder Worm. A druid called Paul Atreides :P

There is TONS of cool stuff in UM. Just offhand, I really dig the spellbooks and spellblight. The archetypes look really cool, as well as the Magus. Yeesh, it all looks pretty damn cool in my book! [sarcasm]Of course, I am not an angsty rules, armchair, lawyer, so what do I know. [/sarcasm]

I really like the alchemist archetypes - they did a really good job of following up on the possibilities suggested by the core class and allow you to specialize in the direction you're attracted to - which is the purpose of archetypes to begin with (duh), but for whatever reason, the alchemist's archetypes strike me as being especially successful at achieving this.

You can get some good combinations, too. For instance, I love the idea of the Preservationist/Vivisectionist - cast summon nature's ally, then move in with your flanking buddy and sneak attack to high heaven.

Off the top of my head I really like the Magus...

Lots of other good stuff but I will post these two items for pure epicness. :)

Mad Monkey - You summon a monkey swarm!

Tumor Familiar - (think Total Recall... except the little dude can jump off you and run around if needed.)

the qigong monk has me excited, just no chance to play one currently

This one sounded great to me once I found out just what it was supposed to be.

Gorbacz wrote:

What is this? I'm assuming it's a spell of some sort.

This is a feat that goes with the Tumor Familiar. It basically allows the tumor to jump in the way of a death attack and save your life.

Silver Crusade

I like the Broodmaster.

Liberty's Edge

Staff-like Wand. Hooray, Wands no longer have to be lame at high levels.

Anthropomorphic Animal, because it's so inexplicably bizarre.
-Kle.

I'm weak...

I had decided not to by this "BLOAT I say, BLOAT!"

And I really shouldn't have read this thread, because five minutes ago I just mailed my Local Friendly Game Store and ordered it.

I'm weak...

A feat actually. It allows your tumor familiar to leap in front of a blow that would reduce you to 0 or fewer hit points and take the damage on your behalf.

Awesome and gross in equal measure :)

I don't have my book yet but.....its in the mail....but the Magus looks cool.

I don't have the book yet. Can I get some mechanical details on this please?

If i am forced to pick one thing i have to say the bladehound magus.

It's mostly a timing issue for me...my cleric in the Kingmaker AP just got Craft Construct. The appearance of the new construct options in Ultimate Magic was very very timely.

Scrollmaster Wizard. Favorite thing ever in Pathfinder. Probably the only wizards I'll ever play again.

So I read lilith's user info page today, and I must say, I think that the "Enunciator Terminator" is possibly one of the funniest things I have ever read, I spit juice EVERYWHERE. Yeah this was totally off-topic, but I had to say it :)

You're welcome. ^_^

Liberty's Edge

I'm excited for the magus and the archetypes.

I'm also looking forward to reading the word magic section.

What exactly is the great thing about the Scrollmaster? Are these the guys I read someone else's post on, who use scrolls like melee weapons and/or shields?

The Magus, some of the archetypes, and the pre-made spellbooks all come to mind.

It's what it says really. Uses your level for spell effects and save DC, but requires 2 feats and 11th level. So it is effectively exchanging feats for cash. Looks very good at first glance, but what wand spells are you going to use it with given that you already have low level slots to burn by that level? Dazing magic missile maybe? Dazing scorching ray? It is possibly a blaster wizards friend but it gets in the way of your lesser quicken rod.

The create demiplane spells are freaking awesome, if only because I can use them as building blocks for plot hooks or something. Some of the new druid options sound incredibly fun, though you give up more than you get, it seems (like the Storm Druid). Wild Speech (allows you to talk while wild shaped) is something I've waited for for a long time.

The premade spellbooks are cool, but I tend to avoid arcane magic because it gets wonky as levels go up. I also like the Spellblights, and I will be using the concept extensively in my homebrew setting, with some tweaking.

The new spell descriptors are sweet, especially the [emotion] spells. I'm totally running a witch (worshiper of Calistria) that focuses on these things.

Binding outsiders, building constructs, archetypes... For all it's editing issues, it's worth it.

Terrible remorse
4th level spell that makes a target unable to take any actions for the duration if they MAKE their save. If they fail, they also thwack themselves for the duration.

Eldritch Heritage line of feats
Ok, it's feat intensive, but allows for much more flexibility in building sorcerers. Bards and oracles and potentially paladins also get in on the fun.

Anthropomorphic animal + marionette possession
If you're good with animals, this one potentially allows you to adventure as an anthropomorphic animal (with the animal's physical stats!) whilst your body is safe and sound in your stronghold. For best effect, get the alternate fey bloodline that gives yourself a beefy animal companion. Anthropomorphise him and go forth in its body. Since you can cast spells whilst possessing the body, you should be able to renew the duration by casting the spell on the animal whilst you possess it. Teleport home every night to let your animal companion rest, and send him out again the next day! Mmmm....cheese....

Time Oracle stands out a very cool for me.

The Arcane Discovery "Immortality". I'm not sure if it's the wizards version of Timeless Body or you actually become immortal (if anyone knows please tell me) but just the feeling of taking a feet with that name is enough.

"I am Tim the immortal enchanter" *manic laughter

oh and the Arcane Discovery that lets you get spells from an opposite schools for one spell slot

what is your name?

What is your favorite color?

what is your quest?

Yeah, so - I'll be getting this one. *sigh*

- Magus!
- Mad Monkeys!
- Arboreal Hammer!
- Quingong Monk!

Simulacrums for Alchemists!
Cognitogens (for Alchemists)!
New Alchemist Discoveries in general!
Create Demiplane!
Bladebound Magus!
New spells I haven't fully sifted through!

Quingong Monk is interesting, but doesn't fit into my current Zen Archer build. I can see myself trying to duplicate a mid-caster with my ki pool, which I am sure will not work and will not end well.

This book is starting to feel like the Quintessential Alchemist's splat with some extra stuff tacked on. Y'know, the +1 to the APG like the APG was the +1 to the Core book? Which now that I think about it makes a whole heck of a lot of sense...

Ouch.

I had't seen this spell up until now, a damned if you do damned if you don't spell. Maybe this is a typo?

Silver Crusade

If not it's a BBEG killer unless that BBEG is a high level inquisitor or immune to mind effecting spells.

Far too good for it's level.

Yes they are.

Which is really bizarre. Is there some sort of fantasy trope that I've managed to completely miss?

I'll openly admit that I don't "get" scrollmaster in the slightest.

scrollmaster:
you wear slippers, morning jacket, and two-hand-bash the dog (or whatever you are fighting) on the nose with rolled up scrolls.

what I like:
mad monkey (why is it not a witch spell, why?)
create demiplane
that spell that makes people kneel before you
immortality "feat" for wizard

This is tough. The Magus was awesome. There are tons of cool new feats (paladins got some nice love, IMO). There were a lot more cool things for other classes too, but these were the ones I liked most.

ProfessorCirno wrote:

+1 to this. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to treat that paper and parchment as such. One hit and it's gone. Magical paper or not, a great wyrm red dragon, a +5 vorpal great sword, or a rapier or puncturing...it's ripping your little script to shreds. I don't know what they were shooting for here, but it makes me a VERY sad panda.

I like the eidolon sample builds. Handy for DM to make one quickly, or for newcomers to Summoner class to get ideas.

Ancestor and Time Oracles.

Witch Split Hex feat.

If I ever play one I'm using this visual. Think professor farnsworth from futurama only as a Mage. Lab/huse coat, slippers, old man pooch, and all

+1 to the witch question. So far I've seen about a dozen spells that SCREAM witch but aren't on the spell list.

Aura of Doom
Control Summoned Creature
Envious Urge
Icy Prison (come on, it's one of our Hexes)
Mad Monkeys (I want my flying monkeys)
Malicious Spite
Murderous Command
Oppressive Boredom
Overwhelming Grief/Prescence
Raise Animal Companion
Serenity

And I have no idea why in the world they'd give Ki arrow to a Witch, makes absolutely no sense to me.

So the fact that it's obvious that the wizard is enhancing the paper means nothing to you?

To deal with dragon and dinosaur overpopulation as the Froghemoth is thier natural predator:)

I've had the same response to what is and what is not considered a Druid spell. Cursed Earth is a prime example, and though this may be a personal thing, I would think that the Acid and Ooze spells like Conjure Black Pudding or Corrosive Consumption would be reasonably druid-ish.

I think its the thematic inconsistency that irks me... Epidemic and Fungal Infestation are druid spells, but the other spells like Eruptive Pustules or Fleshworm Infeestation are not?

Druids did get some feat support for Wildshape and a few minor summoning boost feats, but it looks like the really nice Summon spell boosters are all Summon Monster, not SNA, which gives me a sad.

Still, all these things are house-rule-able, I suppose.

EDIT: Just realized that I completely didn't answer the OP. I love the Alchemist variants and the Synthesist, and Mad Monkeys is a total anti-artillery spell.
