It is not the beginning of the end, but just the end of Bin Laden.

I don't feel pleasure at this news. I feel...sad? A little dismayed at the celebrations back home. I'm...conflicted over it, I guess.

I do not hold to the taboo that we should never be happy at the death of someone. Some people do more for the world by leaving it than they ever could by sticking around. I spent some of Saturday afternoon at a funeral where I mostly envisioned myself strangling the deceased, who treated a loved one very badly for a very long time. That and playing Mad Libs with the sermon.

The fact that he was killed is, of course, a different thing. My preferred scenario would have been to take him alive, haul his ass back to NYC, try him in federal court, convict him, then ship his ass down to DC for a second trial, convict him there, then haul his ass over to that place in Pennsylvania for the third trial, convict his ass there, then stick him in maximum security for the rest of his natural life.

How long do you think before we get a new Call of Duty download? (I don't play CoD, but I imagine this would be a best seller, though, might have to cut out the part about the woman body shield...)

He was never gonna be taken alive. And no I am not a damned bit ashamed at the joy I felt at his death, some people need killing.

THis made my f#++ing day. Folks with the drinks, take a shot for me.

Well, I was drinking cuz of Game of Thrones. Then I watched Monty Python's "Meaning of Life." Oh, the irony.

This isn't going to end well.

In an attempt to lighten the mood, I give you this.

Obama's address

As much as I like hearing that justice has been served, all this celebrating doesn't sit well with me. No matter who it is or what they've done, it just feels wrong to celebrate someone's death to this degree.

Liberty's Edge

Seems appropriate given the current situation.

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

And, given that I was in lower Manhattan on 9/11 and watched it all go down firsthand, it's bringing back a lot of the emotion and raw intensity that I'd forgotten about over the last ten years.

Well, it's not like we've actually accomplished anything with his death. He already won. 6 years ago.

It's like catching the Ocean's 11 guys 5 years after the heist, and all the money has been spent on booze and Ferrari's.

I know how you feel.

I feel grim relief. Mark, TriOmegaZero, The Eldritch Mr. Shiny and Set have pretty well set the thoughts I went through out.

This is a solemn occation, not one for crowds in the street celebrating. The one who took so much from so many has been defeated in the most final manner. Let us rejoice in this, and rejoice that justice has finally come for his victims.

For the brevity of the situation:
The Green Fields of France

Now, we prepare for any backlash from his fanatics.

That would have been my preferred scenario as well.

In case people missed it, the body will not be shipped back to the US but will have a Burial at sea. Therefore if Al Quaeda wants his remains all they have to do is fight the sharks for it.

Sorry, but some people's deaths deserve to be celebrated, and people like Osama bin Laden, Hitler, etc. definitely fit that bill. Hell, I woulda put two in the back of his head myself given the chance.

I find the fact that people believe that pile of sh!t deserves respect and/or dignity appalling. Wrap him in bacon and feed him to the hogs hannibal style and I'd sleep happy.

Oui, oui, monseur.

Sczarni

Glad he's dead.

Worried about his "safeguards in case of assassination". Worried about the inevitable backlash.

Sad we're celebrating in the streets.

I wish he had an unexplained "cardiac event" that put him down without fanfare & potential martyrdom.

I sincerely hope our operative on the ground got out clean.

Net balance: nervous, with a dash of satisfaction.

For those conflicted about his death...there will be those who want him to see justice in the courts and those who don't trust the courts. I've heard that we are burying Osama in respect to Islamic law. Just think, not long ago, we would have dragged him through the streets while our children threw rotting vegetables at him and then ripped him apart slowly and in small pieces and spiked his head. For all humanity's still apparent cruelty, we are making strides in some areas.

Pity they couldn't take him alive. Now the [people] who share his ideas will make him out as some kind of a martyr.

The problem is even if we took him alive gaved him a trail and than sentenced him to death he would have became a martyr to these people anyway...

Even if we did not sentence him to death and just locked him up...his people would still rally to his name.

As to how this news made me feel...I felt good. I know that is not exactly nice...and I usualy feel more sympathy for people not matter what they do...he is one of the few exceptions to this outlook I have.

I also feel a little worried that the US will become complacent again....but we'll see what happens.

backlash...

C'mon , guys- don't be scared. It's not as if they haven't already been trying to hit us. We are beating them. They are losing ground in much of the Islamic world, and they have repeatedly failed to make successful attacks against our homeland. In any event, if you fear to strike them down, they have defeated you. Are you more afraid of death than shame?

I'm off to celebrate in the streets.

I still can't help but look at the irony. England and the US celebrate a royal wedding and then we have the death of this century's most invidious terrorist.

The thing about dignity isn't about him. It's about us.

We see images of people "over there" cheering and celebrating bloodshed and we are appalled. Then when Usama Bin Laden finally gets his, we cheer and celebrate.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't want to give that bastard any sort of victory, including compromising who we are. Letting him change us empowers the bogeyman and martyr he set himself up to become. That's just how I see it. Maybe that's right, maybe it's wrong.

Right now I'm concerned about what the hell is going on between us and Pakistan, given what's coming out about how it all went down.

Are you aware, sir, that there are more than two ways to react to such a situation?

Whatever your views on Bin Laden, how he died, vengeance/justice, etc. can we all stop making offensive comments about Bin Laden's religious beliefs and ethnicity?

Hate him all you want, but don't lump the rest of Muslims and Arabs in with him.

Good point. In any event I wish he could have been taken alive or he had been forced to take his own life. By the accounts of his going down fighting it makes him a hero to his people, and that is the last thing I wanted to see, other than seeing him free that is.

Seconded, especially after getting back from the wider internet.

Suddenly reminded of the beatings in NYC and elsewhere after 9/11. I really hope none of that happens again tonight now that emotions are running high again.

Bin Laden was an evil bastard and deserved to die but to celebrate his death is just as bad as making a martyr out him.

You feel what you feel. I don't think there's a right way to feel about it. I'll admit that I whispered 'ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US...' at the news because I'm a geek and I have PTSD which makes my sense of humor about death and violence kind of screwy sometimes (apparently tonight I also have TMI).

At the same time I'm not all 'woohoo' about it. I guess I feel a fraction of what victim's families might feel at the executions of killers. They might get some closure, but I've never heard of them cartwheeling in the parking lot.

Makes for a great Facebook argument tho. :)
