First of all I do respect the asnwer and the time you took to answer these questions that I made but I just felt that it didn't had too much of an explanation and it is one of the reasons that I went to the rules team forums plus you told me to go over there and ask :p. Second, for my surprise personal infusions its something that have been used for a long long time, there are many people using it this way (including people from the rules questions forum)so even tho this question is not an FAQ candidate(its not asked frequently) it should be errated or clarified maybe to fix further miss understandings about passing personal infusions to allies(with infusion discovery)?

So I went to the rules team and revived an old thread about personal infusions http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2ma9s&page=2?Personal-Range-Alchemist-Infus ions but for my surprise I got the opposite answer of what you answered, confusing me even more. It wasn't answered by the rules team staff, instead it was answered ''globally'' by active players around the forums. They said that I can actually make personal infusions has an alchemist and get my allies to use them. They've been using this method for a long time, its nothing new to the community.

How can I get one of ur rules team to answer this question completely and end this chaos once and for all?

The rules team has a busy schedule, especially around convention season. The best thing to do to get a resolution is to post it where they can see the question, in a way that simply states the question without a wall of text, and then FAQ it and be patient.

That said, if you already have a solution you've been using in your games and it's enjoyable... then you HAVE your answer. Play the way the game is fun to you.

Why make it a bat? If you're going for true ridiculousness, it should be a toad with the destined bloodline.

Intriguing! Something to do with worship and/or the progression of souls from the plane to mortals to death and then off to gods or similar? That's the biggest use of the positive energy plane that I can think of which might relate to gods and demigods.

The Dimension of Time seems to have similar restrictions against gods, the implication being that because they're immortal, they can't enter the plane. Is this true, again, for all gods (including demigods), or just the full deities?

If it's true for all gods because of their immortality, then are there other non-deities who would be barred because of their immortality? For example, would a Runelord like Sorshen (i.e. immortal), or Ileosa if she succeeded in her ritual, be similarly barred from entering the Dimension of Time? Or is it only a very specific "transcended" form of immortality?

(If it sometimes seems like my questions are usually high-end planar or cosmological stuff, it's mostly because this sort of stuff in a fictional setting interests me. Thanks for answering the ones you do.)

The reason and nature of barring deities from the core of the positive energy plane is unlikely to be revealed anytime soon. Mostly because it's not one of the game's mysteries I've given much (any) thought to yet, and I don't want to make up something off the cuff. So for now it must remain mysterious.

Hi James!

1. Are you a part of the planning and implementation of Munchkin Pathfinder at all? If not, have you gotten the chance to play it? I have two major gaming obsessions right now: Munchkin and Pathfinder, and these two things coming together has me extremely excited.

2. Will you be at GenCon this year, and if so, will I be able to get an autograph from you on my Pathfinder Core Rulebook?

3. Are there any plans floating around for new base classes at all? I'm a huge fan of the archetypes system that you guys have implemented, but I'd also love to see a brand-new base class pop up at some point in the near future.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

James, how do you feel about this thread on the Rules forum?

A question that occurred to me recently: The current CR cap is 25, and with Mythic it will be 35; Is that a cap in things that Paizo will release, or is it an actual in-universe cap? It seems like it would be pretty easy to, applying class levels and templates, create something with a CR of 35 or even higher (such as a dragon of advanced age with a lot of class levels, or an advanced cloud giant wizard lich or something) so is it impossible for such things to actually exist in golarion's universe, or do you just choose not to have them happen/appear?

1) I've been involved in that I get to approve all the cards (art, content, and flavor), but I haven't played it yet.

2) I will be at Gen Con, and I will be signing whatever; you pretty much just have to find me. I'll be at the Paizo Booth a lot, and also at several seminars, both of which are good times to catch me with my sharpie.

3) We've not made any announcements for new base classes for a while.

With Mythic Adventures, the CR cap is only rising to CR 30. We won't be publishing things with a CR of higher than 30, just as we didn't publish things higher than CR 25 before that for Pathfinder.

You could certainly build something stronger than CR 30, but the current game, with Mythic Adventures, does not really allow for player characters to ever get powerful enough to really handle CR 31+ foes. Even for a 20th level tier 10 party, a CR 30 foe is an epic encounter akin to a 15th level party facing a CR 20 encounter.

1. Why would think a pacifist PC would be frustrated in a Pathfinder game? With spells like charm monster, baleful polymorph, dismissal, and the Merciful Spell feat (to say nothing of the notorious Diplomacy skill) there are all kinds of options.

2. Why don't you like pacifism in gaming?

3. A previous answer I've wanted clarification on:

Me: "When using polymorph any object to change your race, can you customize your cosmetic appearance? For example, if I change into a tiefling am I limited to just one generic appearance?"

You: "Yes."

Yes to what, the first part or the second part?

Heya again, James. Questions follow!

1) Our Carrion Crown NPC wizard took the True Name arcane discovery and picked up a planetar buddy. Looking through it's stat block, though, I grew to realize that it's cleric spell list was off in the # of spells it got per day. Specifically, for it's given level and WIS mod, it was one spell per day short at 4th and 7th levels and one spell per day in excess at 1st and 2nd levels. Is this a typo or is a planetar somehow okay with wasting such higher level slots for lower level spells?

2) Were you directly, or even primarily, involved with writing the iconic's backstories? If so...

Sorry, I'd forgotten the numbers. I figured the idea was like that, but it sounds like the answer to the question is "They can exist in the universe but won't in any products that we put out."

That said, there are ways to bend the rules to allow PCs to get higher levels (say, taking levels in other classes or prestige classes), which I believe the CRB even mentions, though I understand that some of the mechanics start to break down beyond that point with the disparity between good and bad saves, etc.

Yes to what, the first part or the second part?

1) Because so much of the game is about combat, and because unless everyone in the party was a pacifist, the pacifist would find themselves outvoted and sitting on the sidelines a lot.

2) Because the best stories are about conflict, and being a pacifist is about avoiding conflict. But also because gaming is about multiple players, and as I mention above, if the other players aren't willing to be pacifists as well... that just causes frustration. For the players, but also for the GM, who now has to account for two completely at-odds play styles.

3) Yes to the first part. Each time you polymorph you can adjust the specifics of the appearance as you wish.

A better way to phrase the bolded part above would be:

"They can exist in YOUR universe but don't in official canon that we publish—beyond CR 30 is the domain of true deities."

The Core Rulebook's suggestions for going beyond 20th level are just that—suggestions. They're a patch. A band-aid for players and GMs who don't want to stop at 20th level. They're not official solutions for what to do after 20th level—Mythic Adventures is our official solution for that.

OK, works for me.

4. Also, what advice do you have for single-player games in general. (Assuming any of it's different from Patch's advice.)

Okay, weird question.

Is it possible for elves (and by extension, drow and half-elves) to become obese without the use of magic? Of course, polymorphing anyone could make them fat even when their metabolism is fast, but can an elf gain excessive weight through mundane diet and lifestyle? Or is the elven metabolism such that an elf could be the definition of the word "glutton" and still remain slim and toned?

Some "technical" questions about the Secrets of Golarion purely from an academic standpoint.

I'm fascinated by the "process" of making Campaign worlds. I've designed some of my own to varying degrees of "completion" (Since none of them ever are finished), and I was wondering a few things.

1. How did you and the other creators decide that Aroden's demise would be a secret? As in, what in-game story function generated this mystery?

2. What was the meta-game reasoning that this should "Forever remain a secret?"

3. Is there any reason you can think of that would change this decision? (And, no, I don't expect you to reveal what that reason would be for obvious reasons)

4. Also, what advice do you have for single-player games in general. (Assuming any of it's different from Patch's advice.)

5. How can I make the plot of an adventure be more about a PC's personal interests?

1) Yes. I'm just saying that in my 30+ years of gaming I've seen players attempt a pacifist character before and it has NEVER been satisfying to me as a gm, to the other players, and to the player of the pacifist character. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying I've never seen it done well. Doesn't mean it CAN'T be done well. But the nature of the game, which is that it's a team effort, means that when you have a player who's trying to do something drastically different than the rest of the team, it's gonna cause problems.

2) Games where there's only one player open up a whole host of new possibilities. In such a game, the GM has the ability to completely focus the storyline of the entire campaign in a way that makes it all about the single player's character. In that way, such a campaign actually feels more like a novel, and that opens up some really interesting new avenues of play. It's also very much not the expected norm for Pathfinder, which is what I've been talking about. For a single player game, anything works as long as the GM is on board with running the type of game that the player wants to play. (Or vice versa.)

3) In a single-player game, I'd not divvy up XP at all. I might use the slow advancement, but keep in mind that you're not going to be throwing as many XP at a single player. In a typical game, the PCs might fight 4 ogres. In a single player game, it's better for that same encounter to be against 1 ogre. You don't divide XP, but the single player game has the player facing 1/4 as many monsters, so it works out.

4) I've run and played several single player games. My biggest takeaways are that you should include helper NPCs; things like sidekicks or companions that travel with the PC but are controlled by the GM. For example, if your game was basically Lord of the Rings, the player might be playing Frodo, but you'd be running Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. These support NPCs can come and go as the story requires. Also, avoid using monsters with attacks that stun, paralyze, sleep, or otherwise knock a person out of combat for even a couple of rounds—in a single player game, those are death sentences. You also might want to consider allowing the single player to be a mythic character—that helps to keep the single character alive and at the same time gives a handy in-game reason why that particularly character is and can go at it alone.

5) By asking the player to create a background for his character, and then by using that background to generate the plot of the campaign. We do a little of that with our Campaign Traits, and with Wrath of the Righteous, we'll be doing it even more—each Campaign Trait is linked to a specific quest that gets resolved during the campaign. But yeah... take elements from the player character's background. If that character's history says "My parents were killed by a dragon and that's why I'm an orphan," then you'd better have that specific dragon be a main bad guy in the game. If that character's history says, "I've always been afraid of fire as a result of the dragon's breath," then don't forget to sprinkle fire elements into the game, and maybe have the player learn about a magic item that grants immunity to fire hidden in a dungeon that he can therefore seek out.

Not really. I've no plans to ever go to Detroit.

Well... if you just wanted to write novels based on Golarion (first, make sure you spell the world right!), you can use the community use license to do so—you just can't sell them or charge money for folks to read them. If you want to make money writing these, you'd have to get your story approved for publication by Paizo... and we generally don't work with novelists who haven't already published a novel before.

The Thrice-Damned Fiddle of Tvash-Prull

This ebony and onyx fiddle shows signs of decades of use, but is otherwise in exemplary condition. A small monogram bearing the initials "TP" appears on the back of the instrument, a hint at its former owner. The fiddle gives a wonderful sound when played, and may be employed to produce magical effects should the player attempt a particular song. Two sheets of faded parchment bering a series of musical notes—presumably original compositions by Tvash-Prull himself, are tucked within the hollow recesses of the instrument. Presumably additional magic-inducing songs exist as well.

Each song has an associated Perform DC. If this is met, the player begins aggressively playing the song, releasing the associated magical effect. Effects apply to all friendly characters within a 30-ft.-radius burst centered on the player. The effect lasts only so long as the instrument is played, and the Perform DC must be met each round in order for the song's effects to take place. If the check is missed, the intensity of the song increases, and the player immediately suffers 2 points of Constitution damage. Stopping the furious fiddling is a full-round action that requires a Will save equal to the song's Perform DC. Failure results in increased intensity and further Constitution loss.

1) We wanted several immediate hooks for folks to note. We were introducing a never-before-seen campaign setting, and needed some immediate and obvious ways to get folks interested.

2) Secrets draw interest. Look at any movie or TV show. The secrets are things that really drive people to speculate and become engaged. Lost is a great example, but so is Boba Fett. He's a mysterious and intriguing character, made all the more enticing by what we don't know compared to what we do know. Once the mysteries were explained for Lost, there were a lot of disappointed folks. The more we learned about Boba Fett, the less cool he got. Active mysteries and secrets help to keep folks engaged.

3) A total changeover of staff and thus a complete change of Paizo's philosophies and interests and focus would change this decision.

4) I'm pretty good at keeping secrets. I can resist telling everybody a lot of things.

I've seen 1 episode of that. Wes Schneider's a better person to ask this question.

Is that a +4 against Bluff or Diplomacy? Or does it extend to bonuses on saves vs. enchantment/charm effects? Or is it from a full-bore Aura of Resolve?

P.S. what are the odds on an A.P. involving Arazni and possibly redeeming her? Or is she beyond help at this point? Or is that also a secret you have resistance against revealing? (If that, then: Curses, foiled again!)

Baldur's Gate 2, or perhaps Planescape: Torment, or maybe Skyrim, or The Last of Us, or Mass Effect, or Fallout 2. Something that takes the best parts of those games and makes it into something even more awesome.

Couldn't it also fit Strategy/Tactical RPG (using grid based movements and the like)? On the other hand, that could "compete" with paizo game space.

But I agree, Skyrim like would be awesome.

Awesome! Thanks! :D

Dear James,

While describing firearms ammo, Ultimate Combat states that alchemical cartridges lower the time to load the firearm in one step (full round to standard, standard to move, move to free).

While describing Advanced Firearms, Ultimate Combat states that all of them must use metal cartridges as ammunition, and that the action to reload an advanced firearm is a move action.

While describing metal cartridges, Ultimate Combat states that metal cartridges are a sturdier version of alchemical cartridges.

Based on that, my questions are:
1- Can advanced firearms use other alchemical cartridges? If yes, how much would they cost, and how would they work?

2- The listed time to reload an advanced firearm (move action) already takes in consideration that it is being loaded with a metal cartridge (i.e. it remains a move action when loaded with a metal cartridge)? Or, since it must be loaded with a metal cartridge it would take only a free action to load?

3- Can a metal cartridge be used to reload a non-advanced firearm? And if it can, would it lower the load time?

Thank you. Firearm rules fry my brain. >.<

It's probably more like a +20 bonus. I kept the secret about the magazines ending their stint at Paizo for about a year, after all...

We may do something with Arazni in the future, but redeeming her isn't something that's in the cards at this point.

Pretty much ANY type of video game could be set in Golarion. From RPG to first person shooter to platformer to dating sim to whatever.

Good questions for the rules boards and a FAQ or three.

Ahh, so it's not an immunity, then. Excellent. . .*steeples fingers*

More QQing

ramblng:
(not that I think it would be easy to redeem her, or even something that from a gameworld perspective should be done, but I've woobified her a bit in my mind; her fate is too tragic for words, so I have to hope that some AP, someday, will involve that, or make it a possibility, however slim).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So when can we expect a Westcrown Dating Sim? Involving scions of the various displaced noble families (gotta catch 'em all! These families have names but few details so that could be filled in!)

Or maybe a Paper Doll Game involving the various iconics! Dress them in various gear, dress them for adventure, travel, going about town, intrigue, or even clubbing/pub-hopping for the dating sim!

That would be so pro!
