I...dont want to know what box I opened up. But yay on the thermometer, Woran! It's labour day and a public holiday today, so I went for a swim, baked a tuna pizza and was generally afk. Also prepared my tau kwa and lotus root ration for Thursday, but don't have enough lotus roots for Friday. But thought I'd just snack around in the health fiesta on Friday evening anyway. Other then my breakfast, Thursday and Friday lunch and dinner is like all veg products!

It turns out you don't have to work in retail nor construction to see the depths of human stupidity; you just have to be nearby.
The sewer work on our street is proceeding apace. Now that they're actually laying the line, at both ends of the street they have a bunch of cones and a big sign that says, "Local Traffic Only". Sure enough, yesterday at lunch I had to run an errand and one end of the block was completely blocked and I had to exit in the other direction. It was kind of expected.
So yeah, maybe you don't speak English. Maybe you're illiterate. But seeing all the construction equipment on the street and the orange cones blocking the street so you have to slowly, narrowly squeeze in should really be telling you something.
Yet at least twice a day a car comes up the street, gets blocked by the construction equipment, and starts honking maniacally at them.
I agree with Captain Yesterday on this one: Not only would I not move the equipment from in front of them, I'd pull in some massive piece of machinery behind them and just leave them there, honking away, for at least 20 minutes...

And it begins...
Even though Impus Major isn't "dating" Underage Girl, she climbs all over him every time she's over, which is almost every day. It's 100% typical behavior for her; she's a very physical person, and she climbs all over everyone.
So Gossip Girl and Emo Guy have decided that they're dating, they've started promoting that rumor at school, and they're telling her ex (one of Impus Major's best friends) that she dumped him so she could be with Impus Major, and they're telling Impus Major he's mad at him.
Classic high school gossip mongering. Gods how glad I am I avoided it all by being appallingly unpopular. At least everybody hated me, and I didn't have to worry about who did and who didn't.
Impus Major is weathering it well so far, insisting he'll live by his own personal code of honor. But when that includes allowing a girl in whom you don't have any interest to climb all over you every day, people are going to make assumptions...
(And yes, he told her he wasn't interested at the moment, but she still does it, and he doesn't stop her, so whatever...)

He's all over it. As I keep saying, he's a 30-year-old in an 18-year-old's body. He just wanted to report to me what was happening, check in to make sure he was making the right decisions, and go deal with it.
My #1 issue with him is that he's still letting Underage Girl crawl all over him. Yes, it's pleasant. But at a certain point you have to ask two fundamental questions:
(1) Is the pleasantness worth the grief?
(2) When you never end up having feelings for her anyway, will the pain you cause her then be worth the happiness you're giving her now?
I'll have to go over those two with him tonight.

So about the whole school popularity thing. I went to a smallish rural school, my graduating class was less than 30 people. I started out very unpopular but in my area that meant that people picked a lot of fights with you. After about a half dozen fights I devoted a lot of time into getting everyone at least neutral to me. Popular enough to not have to defend myself but still unpopular enough that no one wanted to start drama either. Also something I noted after talking to people that went to larger schools is that with less than 100 people in the school you got to know everyone pretty well, even if you didn’t want to and it pays off to get along.
Oh and hello all! I hope you don’t mind me joining in on conversations. I only migrated to this section of the forum a day or 2 ago. Is this just kind of an off topic thread or is there a specific set of topics that it should be kept to?

Welcome, strange tentacle beast.
The only things we try to stay away from, with varying degrees of success, are politics, religion, and sports. We're really good at staying away from sports. We're kinda so-so on staying out of politics. Spoiler tag it if you must let the fingers (do you have fingers?) fly anyway.
It's a home away from home to vent, chat about anything, and honestly, to the degree that you can given geographical, species, and planar limitations, make new friends. Some of us know each other outside of the lighted box, some of us have at least met once or twice, and some of us are engaged to each other.

I'll go into more detail some other time, 'cause I'm actually doing work I find somewhat interesting and enjoyable, but our class was roughly 200 people.
In my freshman and sophomore years, I could not walk down the hall without people throwing ice, marbles, pebbles, or crayons at me. No idea why those were their weapons of choice, what whatevs. I had a guy in my history class pull out a knife and carve up my shirt while the teacher was lecturing. I turned around and giggled at him. He never came near me again.
In my junior year, everyone got tired of failing to get a rise out of me, so they left me alone.
In my senior year, I let the football team shave my head and suddenly I was the coolest guy on campus, and everyone wanted to be my friend. And I refused, because they were all jerks. Which just made me cooler.
I never got in a fight at school mainly because I never fought back; in 7th grade one of the toughs punched me in the head as hard as he could. I said, "Hey, stop that!"
The fact that I could take such a punch and only be mildly annoyed convinced them that beating me up would be far too much work, so they left me alone.

Yeah, the last fight I was in in high school actually gave me a rep boost that helped when I decided to try and fit in. The Varsity football star quarterback decided to push me around and I decided to fight back. I almost had him choked out and then 3 of his friends pulled me off of him and held me down then when the guy got up he punched me square in the face. His class ring cut me pretty bad and blood sprayed all over the place but I shrugged it off and just gave him the look of death until teachers got there.
The next day everyone wanted to check out the stitches and apparently no one could believe that I just took it. Luckily the guy was a senior (I was a freshman) and he left me alone the rest of the year and I never had to deal with him again. I think I legitimately scared the crap out of the guy.

Wow. The more I look back on high school, the more I think I had the ideal experience. I wasn't popular or unpopular. In a class of about 400, everybody knew who I was, but I was just the right amount of offbeat that while I didn't really fit in with any group, nobody really bothered to exclude or target me, and I could get by with getting along with most people fairly well. It probably would've sucked a lot more if I'd been less an introvert, but...shrug
To this day, I have no idea how I managed to hit that sweet spot.

I was a small, scrawny nerd in a tiny, highly rural town (just over 5000 pop, my graduating class was around 120) in south Texas who didn't like sports, drinking, hunting, or farm/ranch stuff. I was about as un-masculine as you can be without being actively feminine and in Texas that makes you fresh meat.
Add depression, an extremely visible emotional reaction to pretty much everything, a very low tolerance for pain, and extremely conservative religious parents that prohibited almost all the things most kids my age found fun and a "just don't react and they'll stop" approach to their kid being bullied (nevermind that not reacting was not easy for me, and my particular bullies were not the type to quit even when I managed), and I was basically the ideal target.

Yeah, I’m sorry man. I share a number of those traits with you but I had a size advantage. I’m 6’1 and over 200 lbs. Which also probably contributed to people wanting to stop picking on me after I started fighting back. Fighting back actually works when you usually win.
While I still had to work for acceptance pretty hard, people seemed to prefer me being peaceable over me always being on edge.![](/WebObjects/Frameworks/Ajax.framework/WebServerResources/wait30.gif)

I had a great high school experience.
Freshman year (1990) I just moved to a new town, two hundred miles away, I had long hair, and we were poor so I already had a lot of flannel shirts and ripped pants.
Couple that with my outgoing personality and I was friends pretty much with everyone.
I'm pretty sure you can still ask people in Monroe if they remember me and you'll find someone that does.
Of course the trick is, no one knew me by my real name, as I had a penchant for nicknames *gasp!*

I suspect because I was bullied so much by my brothers growing up I wasn't afraid of high school.
It helped that my dad was always telling me to stand up for myself against them (usually after mom yelled at me for instigating them).

My mom was the one always saying "just don't react and they'll leave you alone" which as stated didnt work.
Dad was always saying things like "man up" or "toughen up" and generally not being helpful or sympathetic. And at the same time telling me not to fight back because two wrongs don't make a right.
Neither of them really did anything to actually help, and certainly never took it to the school to put an end to it. Parents who did that kind of thing were pretty disdained where I grew up as meddlesome overprotective nannies/ninnies.

I've mentioned it before, but the difference between growing up in the 1970s and the 2000s in this area is staggering:
1970s: My friend and I got jumped on the way home by a couple of bullies. I dumped the one off of me and ran. My friend got beat up. We reported it. None of our parents bothered coming to the meeting. The bullies' parents did, and insisted that, "Our little angels would never have done something like that." The principal believed them, and it got dropped.
From then on, my friend got beat up, picked on, and dumped into thorn bushes a lot. Because I'd been strong enough to throw off my attacker, I was left alone.
2000s: Impus Minor reported he was being bullied. We went in and met with the other parents. They believed him, apologized to him and us, and the bullying stopped cold, without the kids having to fight it out.
And yeah, my father was no great help. "If you are in a situation so bad that you need to fight, then you'd better d**ned well kill the other guy. Because if you're not fighting for your life, then you shouldn't be fighting. Nothing you own is worth fighting over."
And he was serious. If I was ever in a fight, he expected me to kill my opponent.
My dad was kind of weird.

Bullying was starting to be seen as serious but it wasn’t quite there yet and again I went to a school out in the sticks so things caught on even slower there. My mom wasn’t super helpful for anti-bully advice but as much as I dislike him, my stepfather was completely fine with me defending myself. But he is also a red blooded marine.

I never got into fights in highschool, other then a few close friends I mostly didn’t get along well with others. I think its harder to get into fights in Asia and not get into trouble then in the States. I don’t approve of violence and my first instinct would be to try to get away and report to a teacher rather then fight back(because down here, whoever who started the fight – it doesn’t matter, both of you get into trouble). I also am genuinely afraid of hurting people should I really get into one. I’d probably just aim to get that guy doubled up, or knocked down, then I’d run off.
You see, I am clumsy. Relatively higher strength and crap dex do not make a good combination…I’ve bent spoons, broken stuff without meaning to.
Honestly if my kids did get into a fight, as long as they didn’t start it, I’d just recommend they report to a teacher next time, but hitting back in self defense is not a crime.

And since I hit puberty early it meant I was taller and bigger then other kids in school, at least till high school.

In the U.S. most schools have a zero tolerance rule for fighting, there is no self defense, both parties get in equal trouble. Even my school had that policy. Sadly that didn’t stop people much and going to adults just made it worse later. Call it a personal flaw but I’m not that abhorred by violence and just taking it lying down wasn’t helping me. So I fought back until they realized it wouldn’t work well for them then I extended an olive branch by showing that I could be a pretty decent guy if they would accept me for who I was.
Things were also pretty complicated as far as my school’s functioning. It was a school in a poor rural area on a Native American reservation. For many reasons I won’t go into the drop out rate was significantly higher than average. With the No Child Left Behind governmental regulations that came out about that time and how the 2 interacted, things got messy. It boiled down to the school having to graduate anyone who showed up or the government would shut the school down. They were extremely reluctant to expel people so kids could get away with a lot and get no more than a stern talking to.
But I should probably let this conversation go. It’s probably depressing for some.

Graduated 2003 here, can confirm, things seemed to take a turn for the better fairly shortly after I got out of the system.

As Ray said, many places in the US in the 90s and early 00s had what was called "zero tolerance policies" which basically made it yes, hitting back in self defense was a punishable offense, just as much as starting the fight. This was the main reason I was told so often to not fight back - because the rules said so, and thus fighting back was as wrong as starting the fight in the first place.
And again as Ray said, the bullies typically either didn't care about getting in trouble or, as NH said, had ways to get out of trouble despite the zero-tolerance rule. Meaning the only person, more often than not, who actually gets punished for bullying incidents was the victim, either because they get bullied and did nothing and the bullies never got punished, or because they fought back and got hit with the ZTP and the bullies managed to wiggle out of trouble.
I can speak from experience as to both results, having lived through them.

Also signed up for a 5k fun run for charity . The fun part of the equation will be that I will already be running 5k in the morning so that makes 10k distance total covered. Again I don't forsee it as a problem since I have run 10k straight before.

I was the weird kid, so I got bullied a lot. I punched quite a few people trough high school. This had the benefit that I did not get bullied by boys. No one wanted to be the guy that got beaten up by a girl. They might have been taller and stronger, but I always went for the eyes, and they would always reflexively protect those.
I never got in trouble for fighting however. I was a model straight A student. Always polite to teachers. Always did my homework. So no teacher actually wanted to punish me.

Bullying for me was only a junior high school thing- not counting elementary school because kids are idiots in general. I was one of three black kids in my town in the middle of nowhere in rural suburban pa. I dont think I have to draw you a map for how that went. When we moved back to ny, I was the second or third or first smartest kid in my junior high in a very, very bad neighborhood. Again, no need to draw a map.
My high school was the hippiest of the hippy schools(see my earlier comments on why I hate the Beatles), and I never had any trouble there and made my lifelong friends there.
Disturbingly, there was a fatal stabbing not far from my high school last week. This is bizzare in the extreme for the area, and everyone is on high alert, even people who dont live there. At least one suspect has been found, confidence is very high that he will lead police to anyone else involved, as he turned himself in with the help of his parents.
