So, my son's homework assignment was to ask me about a courageous person that he could introduce to his class. I thought about talking about Rosa Parks or Canadian Terry Fox or Ghandhi. I decided on Mother Jones because my son is quite anti-socialist and I wanted to challenge him a bit.
Who would you have picked? Who do you think of as particularly courageous?

And let's not mention that guy's name on this thread. It would really piss me off if I had to use my tunneling proxy to surf Paizo, too.
Hmmm. Does anyone know if Google can index my BB code inside the brackets?
It generally doesn't index spoilered contents, so I would think that would be safe too.

Usually I'd say no, since the bbcode is converted server side. But the name is in the link, created by the bbcode.
For safty's sake in future, you may want to use This or similar, assuming you can.
After reading that page. I have to agree. I may have to go buy his book.

Bishop John Rucyahana or even moreso the Rwandans he helped bring together with the perpetrators of genocide--the specific individuals that had killed their family members--to forgive their atrocities and thereby find a way to move that country forward. Looking the man that killed your wife, mother, or daughter (or all three) in the face and finding a way to move beyond the pain and hatred to true reconciliation...that's courage.

I might go with Cicero because he's not often cited for courage, and was largely considered to be a physical coward, if a great orator and political thinker of his day. When he did on occasion display courage it makes it that much more impressive to read about, knowing what the man had to overcome in order to make a brave gesture.
He harangued against Caesar and Marc Antony quite a lot... provided they were out of town, but had a habit of getting a *lot* less critical when they could lay hands to him. In the end, however, he chose patriotism over personal safety. When Marc Antony's men pulled him from his palanquin they later reported that he pulled his toga from his shoulder and bore his neck to the sword, in a gesture often made by losing gladiators of his day, which was considered the bravest (and last) of defiant gestures they could make.
I find that believable due to the source: his assassins, sent by Antony, who had little enough reason to give Cicero any dignity in death after what he'd both written and said about Antony.
He knew that it was coming, and spoke out to preserve his republic in spite of that. After the deaths of Cato and Scipio there were not many people willing to 'speak truth to power' in the dwindling days of the Republic.

My personal favorite was Harvey Milk. He knew as soon as he took office he would likely be assainated but he did it anyway. That to me is true human courage, knowing it's going to end badly but still fighting for what you think is right.
And in the event of his assassination, he prepared a tape to be played. It included this line:
If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door in the country

Oooh, I misread your initial post.
Wow, Mother Jones is an intersting choice. I read her biography in college. Kind of funny her feelings on Union Management. I've wondered what she'd think of the modern AFL-CIO or Teamsters.

I'm impressed by your idea of challenging your son and think that choosing some one that exemplifies courage but that has a world view contrary to our own is a great idea.

Thanks. Either its good parenting or I'm just screwing with his head. Time will tell.

Don't tell Sebastian ...
The other day on the way to the bus stop, Nerrat told me, "I admire Sebastian. He's got a good sense of humour. But don't tell him that. I don't want to be removed from his favoured enemies list."

Miep Gies, Bep Voskuijl, and the others. I like to think I would have done the same, but I have to admit I'm not sure.
