Oh! Oh! I pointed out the perfect pair of shoes to my wife.
"You just like them because they're 50% off!" she objected.
An hour later, across town, she buys the exact same pair for three times as much. I don't tell her until later.

I really wish I could rename threads ...
I'd call it: If I wasn't convinced that we could have an edition war and fat olivia munn in one place, now I am.
:)
The oddity amongst this whole thing is that I couldn't care less about 4E. Paizo, Green Ronin and Fantasy Flight Games have become the new custodians of my hobby.
IF Paizo ran a contest like this, I suspect they would attempt to appeal the core audience of the hobby - as opposed to what WotC did with theirs, which was appeal to the popularity driven mainstream contests inherent in MySpace and Facebook ratings. It would likely be silly goblins, and big dragons and jokes about Vancian magic.
To me, the tie in products that work, are the ones that recognize the inherent history of geekiness, double-entendre and often self-depecrating humour inherent in the hobby.
It's kind of like finding lawyers who love lawyer jokes.
I find that tie-in products that are more interested in appealing to an inherent need to be popular show a distinct direction that the custodian of D&D is going ... and it's one that doesn't do anything for me.
As a role-player, board gamer, War gamer, and video gamer I'd feel the same way if any of the custodians of the most recognized products in their respective industries decided to turn their marketing efforts into popularity contents.
It appeals to a core demographic that I am no longer a part of.
As I said before, my criticism was not of 4E, it wasn't even a criticism of the shoes themselves; it was the inherent principle of the contest. If I could go back and edit the original post I would to make that more clear. IF the principle of the contest is inherent in the entire design and marketing strategy of WotC in relation to 4E then my criticism still stands ... they have moved on from a gamer like me.
Frankly, that makes me more sad than angry.

I'll continue to hate WotC until they make some more D&D Action Figures! And, dammit, I want a Tomb of Horrors Playset, with Action Punch Four-Armed Gargoyle and Demilich Acerak with Light-up Eyes and Teeth.

WotC combats bad fashion sense among roleplayers and feeds the grognards' secret desire to be young and hip again. A noble aim!
Now stop whining and pretending not to be taken in - when we all know how much you secretly crave a pair - or two. Methinks the ladies doth* protest too much!
*An incorrect plural! Go, get him!
Maybe we could come up with a secret handshake! That would be so cool.
Actually, we DO have one. Ain't it telling when someone blunders into an elite RPG forum (tm), blurts out his ignorance on the matter, and incidentally harps on about differentiating imaginary from genuine(TM) roleplayers and all! Oh the irony.

Some of those minis do look pretty good, especially the Rhemoraz. Most are (for me anyway) meh. I'll probably end up buying a handfull of singles from Miniature Market (no offense Paizo, but they're cheaper).
Still, what I was talking about are the old action figures: The Half-Orc Assassin, Elkhorn the Dwarf, Kelek, Northlord, Strongheart, WARDUKE!!! And a whole host of others.
They should make some of those guys again.

Scott is right. I have repeatively felt like going over to a more pro-4E boards just because when I try to discuss 4E in the 4E section with the intelligent and creative people from the Paizo community someone has to come and berate my choice of game or call me a fanboi because I am do not like 3.x
It is annoying but worse then that is to see their vitriol repeated over and over again by people that have never played the game but just read about it somewhere else. This is the reason I became a "4E Defender" because I was tired of seeing it over and over again and wanted to put some positive experience or examples or arguements or whatever you call it out there to counteract the vitriol. The only reason to "argue" (debate, discussion) on the internet is not to convince your opponent of your words but to convince the readers and bystanders.
As for the Paizo staff. I respect them as creative people and their job is not to moderate the forums. I don't believe they have a position for someone that just moderates the forums. And self-moderation by the community isn't getting done as Scott said unless someone calls someone of their crap. As for the flagging system... Nothing is done about the people that come in and threadcrap and the funny part is that if to many people do flag them then the thread gets a warning that if we don't behave then it will get locked. No warning went out to those responsible just thread-wide so there is little point in using the flagging system unless you just want the thread to get closed.

seekerofshadowlight |

The flagging system is not for thread crapping, it is not for posts you find "wrong" it is for people calling people names, threating and all around being major jerks.
It works fine, just not how you want it. Case in point this thread blew up because a few people could not ignore a few posts. Gods let it go

Patrick Curtin |

While I have been a voice calling for tolerance on this silly edition war since last year, I must say these increasing calls for more moderation are annoying me. I understand you feel like somehow you are under attack because certain folks don't like 4E, but hiring a moderator isn't going to 'fix' this. If anything, a full-time moderator would probably end up just like the Gleemax boards, where people saying nice things about the product are sheltered, and people attacking the product are warned/banned. Think about it for a second, because like it or not, you're in a minority on these boards.
Pathfinder folks, I understand there's still bitterness about the whole edition transition. I have felt it too in the past, but come on.... Try to let the past go. It's as sad as stalking your dumpy ex-girlfriend after you meet Olivia Munn and sweep her off her feet. Let the 4E folks do their thing in peace, they ain't harming anyone. If they bag on Pathfinder directly, by all means bring the blowtorch, but if they are just chatting about their game, then let them be. Of course, this also follows for the '4E Defenders' out there. This forum is going to have negative posts about your game. Be the bigger person and refrain from posting if it's not in the 4E section. Some folks need to vent, and this is pretty small beans compared to what some of the @sshats over on Gleemax say about Paizo.
Paizo has a great forum community where you can talk about ANY game, including 4E, which they didn't have to do. WotC is now a competitor, and it would be perfectly reasonable not to let folks post about competitor's products. As someone pointed out upstream, there is no Pathfinder board on Gleemax. And yes, I understand they still sell 4E products, but that doesn't mean they have to make a forum to let people discuss them.
Once again, editionistas, it's a GAME.. It is not life-or-death, this is a small niche hobby where a few folks come to spend a few hours. Pathfinder folks: YOU WON! You have a great game, it is well supported by 3PP and looks to go on for years. 4E folks: YOU WON! The majority of D&D gamers are in your corner, the 4E books made the bestseller lists in a soft economy, and your game looks to be supported by excellent 3PP and will go on for years.
Now, can we all put on our big-boy pants, stop grousing about what's going on over on the other side, concentrate on enjoying our chosen gaming engine, AND STOP CALLING FOR FULL-TIME MODERATION!!!!!!!!!!

Sebastrd |

If they bag on Pathfinder directly, by all means bring the blowtorch...
Then when folks bag on 4E, don't be surprised to get a similar reaction.
Seriously, if folks don't like 4E, they ought to refrain from posting about it, period. You don't see 4E fans crapping in Pathfinder threads; it's rude and unnecessary for Pathfinder fans to do so in 4E threads. Until folks can muster the self-control to mind their own business, expect this stupid edition war to continue; it could have been over a long time ago.
Note: This post is not necessarily directed at you, Patrick.

seekerofshadowlight |

But this was not a 4e thread. just walk away do not attack a post, as there is a counter attack
that attack brings on a counter-counter attack.
that brings on an assault.
That rally's more support.
they brigs another attack
that makes em start attacking posters
that brings a call for more moderation
that brings yet more attacks
then we get here.

Patrick Curtin |

Note: This post is not necessarily directed at you, Patrick.
That's fine, and I understand what you are saying. I totally understand the anger if someone comes along in the 4E forum and drops a steaming pile of threadcrap about how Wizard's raped their cat and kicked their grandma. By all means, bring the blowtorch then. I have no dog in this fight, I made my descision, I am happy with it and I don't feel the need to post vitriol about the other game.
Wizards is a company. As a company they do what they feel will bring them profit. My opinion, your opinion, Joe in the corner's opinion isn't worth squat. They are operating from a non-fan business paradigm, which has them making descisions based on that, not on fan sensibilities.
And while you say you don't see 4E fans crapping on Pathfinder threads (although they do have some, I have seen it in action, check out the Pathfinder Beta review some driveby troll just crapped down.) This particular thread is in a neutral spot on the forums where people are laughing at a promotion, which quite frankly IMO is silly (but a time-honored tradition in D&D, anyone remember the silly-looking 3E launch shirt you got for preordering the books? I've got mine in storage!)
All I'm asking for is a little maturity from the community and less worrying about what others enjoy. And I will always weigh in against moderators, we don't need a nanny on this board.

Personally, I was amused by the topic. Most shoes don't last that long for me, so it's a moot point.
I have a House Davion keychain by Reaper. Is it a silly idea? No. In fact it's better than the shoes because anyone who knows what it is knows I'm a Battletech player, and what faction I claim.
Are Shoes sillier than a D&D lunchbox? Likely not. Is it aimed primarily at kids (and parents with disposable income)? Likely. Is it the end of the world, not so much.
Edited part, just because I don't want to deal with a certain poster.

They made the Wolf, Falcon, Bear, and Jag, and maybe the Novacat (my other faction) but none of the Homeworld clans.

Blah, the bears mock our ways , the falcons are to rigid and near sighted, the wolves are weak mere pubs fighting over scraps of what little honor they have left and the Novacats are mystics with no real ability to be true warriors.

Which incidentally kind of comes back to my original point.
The best part of product tie-ins are those that help others acknowledge that they are part of the same sub-culture.
Reaper didn't create the keychain for it's mainstream coolness factor, they made it because every Battletech fan in the known universe would likely go ga-ga over it.
WotC, to me, came across as trying to be hip and trendy using the buzzwords of a sub-culture generally not associated with D&D. It just struck me as odd.

Yes, they all do. The problem is always getting the factory to enforce the quality standards requested by the client (WotC).
I'll concede that the visible pieces probably have a QC priority - I'm pretty sure WotC would have been very stern about this. Also the visibles are large and it's easier to put out a large figure with nice detail.
All in all a good move by WotC.

Just ask them to reset the shims and pins when they're making auto body parts. Nothing worse than putting a Chinese-made hood on a car and having a one inch gap on one side, and having the other side rubbing the fender panel...

Some of the stuff made over here is great.
Take the Germans. You put an Germanic dude (we actually have a Korean) at the QC desk with the power to fire managers and workers, and suddenly everything is pat down to the micrometer. And the Audis over here are pretty damn good cars.
Then problem as I see it is a%@&&*$s import from crappy factories just to save a buck, then people blame it on Chinese manufacturing in general.
Anyone who is getting something made in China needs to do their research and choose carefully. Never take the lowest bids or you're guaranteed to get toxic chemicals, sketchy sizing, impurity, short user life... or whatever.

Similar things for us in dealing with India and eastern European programmers in the technology sector. It's all well and fine until you find out that someone wrote 600,000 lines of code and didn't once put a reference or comment in it to tell you what it did.

The fellow at Wizards of the Coast who's in charge of the paint jobs on the DDM figures is named Pete Lee. He's a good guy; when I complained in my LiveJournal about the quality of recent sets, he took the time to answer my concerns. He agreed and explained how he was working on the problem.
The last set was better-looking than the astonishingly crappy ones that came before, and this current set looks pretty good, too. You're paying more for a set, and getting fewer figures, and that means that WotC can spend some more time on the paint jobs. That's probably the right choice.

Geekdom is a sub-culture that is commonly associated with D&D. Geekdom as a sub-culture has a connection to the whole "Popularity Contest" thing as "geeks are commonly represented as unpopular and always wanting to fit in with the 'in-crowds' aka becoming popular."
I had a much better post before but the forums ate it. They won "popularity" contests in Revenge of the Nerds or any other Hollywood movie about "geeks / nerds" usually. So in the end I would say that it does have an association with D&D though the geekdom sub-culture.

I like the sculpting quite a bit however there is still a pretty strong sense that the number of paint steps is particularly limited. I like them for what they are (Cheap plastic mini's for my game) but can't help but wish that they could add a few more paint steps to nearly all the mini's.
I have to wonder is a slightly higher quality product at a slightly higher price might not make them more appealing. It could for me as really WotCs new mini's are fundamentally in competition with the old ones I already own and if they are mainly just going to full a 'cheap plastic mini resembling what your currently fighting' slot at my game table then I can't really see how most of this is much of an improvement on what I already have.
