My personal preference is to play in Keegan's game but I'd also be happy to play in Primemover003's campaign.

Dark Archive

Keegan, please take a look at Ritual Markings from Dragon No. 340

Spoiler:
for goods and services equivalent to 200 gp, gain +1 to Diplomacy when dealing with the appropriate tribe or setting; for 400 gp, get +1 to Intimidate and Diplomacy when dealing with appropriate tribe or culture, -1 to Diplomacy but +2 to Intimidate, when dealing with those outside the appropriate tribe or culture; for 2,000 gp, get +3 to Intimidate and +1 to Diplomacy when dealing with appropriate tribe or culture, -2 to Diplomacy but +4 to Intimidate, when dealing with those outside the appropriate tribe or culture.

That seems fine to me. Are you going to be part of a tribe or will this be something you've done to yourself or maybe gone to a particular Dabus tattoo artist in Sigil and had it done?

BTW, just got Manual of the Planes in the post, so I'll review the bariaur in there for anyone playing with me and interested in the race and take a look at what updates it contains. There are a couple of faction prestige classes to look at, too.

The tattoo artist in Sigil sounds nice. :D

A few new races and some Planar Substitution Levels for the main phb classes as well.

The Planar Handbook version is fine for my campaign, Mothman. Some of the planar substitution levels are pretty good (I like the paladin's smite evil outsider instead of turn undead, fer instance). The book as a whole is fair at best, but there's a few redeeming things about it.

Since I think post Faction War Sigil looks a lot more boring than pre Faction War Sigil, I'm going to set my game before the Faction War but after the events of Great Modron March/Dead Gods and Savage Tide. Sigil works better with the 'philosophers with clubs' aspect and I liked the division of power in the Second Edition product. I like the "all truths are equal" slant that emerges from having every perspective in one place, forced to coexist (if not peacefully). That doesn't mean post Faction War prestige classes like The Sons of Mercy won't be available; they'll just be part of their original faction (for example, The Mercykillers).

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, the book is slightly underwhelming, but it’s got just enough good stuff to be worth the money (particularly if you got it cheap!).

Cool re the Bariaur.

Hmmm … I’ve been writing my character background and motives based on a post Faction War setting, with a crucial event centering around the abandonment and destruction of the Hall of Records … but, I think I can change things easily enough and the key points should still work.

Actually, I agree with you, Sigil is much cooler pre Faction War – I think you probably made the right call, particularly if a decent chunk of your campaign is planned to be based around Sigil.

I would love to be part of a planescape game if primover003 is still looking for peoples. I played the old torment game an loved it.

I'm very new to play by post so peps would have to bear with me a bit. Also, is there a source book currently available I could use if picked to help build a character suitable for the setting and is there a deadline for said character?

I'll take up any of the slack James has if any are interested. 6 players sounds about right and I'm thinking 3rd level 32 point buy. I usually allow most things from the Core, Complete, PHBII, Races of, and FR. I don't have a lot of Eberron resources but if you have the info I'll look at it.

Count me in, PM003.

Are you open to classes from the Tome of Magic or Heroes of Horror? Do you have access to those books as well?

I do have both those fine resources... What were you looking at Shadowcaster, Dread Necromancer??? Darker character concepts will work in my game as easily as more goodly ones. I'm quite used to a rather mercenary outlook from my everyday gaming group.

I too would rather play pre-FW than after. One of these days I'm gonna come up with my Great Upheaval campaign!

Balefire is an awesome setting too. I actually have a Balefire campaign bible sitting sround waiting to be cracked open too. Tome of Magic is a fantastic book for the flavor of the Plane of Shadow alone. I mean what is better than a city full of drow, humans, 1/2 drow, vampires, gloamings, glouras, shadar-kai, mongelfolk, shades, etc, etc. That is a very cool city that I can't wait to tackle.

Ok so far I have:
-Kruelaid
-Mynis More
-Twice Born

Like James I'll look for some input from you into what style of games you like (as we've never played before). I'll tell you I was raised up on classical fantasy and sword and sorcery (Tolkien, Lewis, Moorecock, Lieber, Howard). I like to evoke the tone and feel of a setting and was always drawn to the non-typical campaign settings like spelljammer, planescape, ravenloft, and dark sun (yes I like psionics).

Planescape however is the gem of my collection. Whether it was the Cant or the Froudian artwork by Tony D the minute I picked up the original boxed set I was in love with it. The Eternal Boundary, Well of Worlds, Hellbound, and Dead Gods are my favorite of the PS modules... My Factols Manifesto is falling apart I read it so often!

primemover003,

I'm pretty open as far as game styles go and your reading list is what I grew up... okay I read them all by age 14. My grasp of the rules on the other hand isn't as good as the rest of you because I've come back to D&D a year ago, after a 20 year hiatus. I am a power-gamer at heart but don't have the savvy yet to do it with 3.5. But don't worry. Gaming in general, LOTS of experience.

I own the core books, RC, SC, and XPH. I have ToM on order, but it won't be here soon enough to make a character. I would be interested in playing a psi. I have only read ABOUT Planescape, I don't know much of the cant, so lets see what I can find out on the net.

And... just FYI, I have no problem with my character getting 'lost', my feelings don't get hurt very easily.

Not to worry you'll catch on quickly! Besides the only real folk who speak Cant are Cagers. PS is more about the Tone and Feel of the setting. Belief is power is one core concept, the others are the Unity of Rings, the Rule of Three, and the Center of the Multiverse. You'll get tastes of these in any good PS game.

I'm open to any Psionic characters. Psions, Wilders, PsyWars, Ardents make especially good PS characters as they're so tied to their philosophy. Gives me a good excuse to throw in Illithid and Githyanki!

I'm thinking rogue/wilder. When you start a thread I'll post something.

Liberty's Edge

I think I'm gonna back out. I have three allready, it's kinda hard to juggle; and I'm gonna start something maybe in a couple months; I need to figure out what I want to run. Depends on how hectic life is, if I can run one.

I really am sorry dude. I'm getting Multiple Personality Disorder as it is...;)

I think I have a really fun idea for a psion! Let me mull it over a bit and round out the concept some. I should have a working outline soon.

Right now, I'm leaning towards making an elven shadowcaster, but I still need to take a bit more time to figure out the mechanics of that class and see how much I actually like it. How quickly do you expect characters/concepts to be drafted? I'm kinda busy right now, but should (hopefully) be able to have a draft ready sometime next week...

As far as campaign style is concerned, I like stories that emphasize character development and roleplaying. I'm more interested in atmosphere and interesting situations, than I am in "killing things." The chant does set Planescape apart from other settings, but too much of it can be a tad... grating....

If you could post a general idea of the campaign theme (i.e., what will we be trying to accomplish), that might help me decide on a class and race...

Thanks!

If that's the case then I think I'm gonna provide the beef for this party. Are we 4th level?

That having been said, like any gamer, I do like my share of action/combat, as well... just not a hack and slash player or power gamer.

Quick update for my game-

I found a copy of Tome of Magic for cheap on Amazon, so Mothman, if you've still got your heart set on a binder, I'll take a look at the rules and get back to you.

Players so far for me, as far as I see it (correct me if I'm wrong):
-Radavel - Half-orc Druidic Avenger
-Arctaris - Aasimar Rogue
-Mothman- Bariaur Fighter/Wizard (or Binder?)
-mwbeeler- Elan Paladin? Something else? Still into it?
-Patrick Curtin- Modron?
-One slot open

I've got the plot forming, so once I've got an outline and some mechanical/description stuff down, I'll get the character generation specs up (kinda want that to be the last step).

If you're already pretty solid on concept answer some or all of the following questions for your character:
-What does he/she/it believe?
-What is the most valuable thing to this character (may be a material possession, may be something more abstract)?
-Where are they from (Prime or Planar? Where on the Prime Material, where in the Planes?)
-Are they part of a faction? If so, why did they join? Did they pass a test? Fill out an application form?
-Where did your character learn their profession? Where did they get their gear?
-If you're a Prime, how did you get onto the Great Wheel and subsequently, to the city of Sigil? What were your first impressions and how have you adjusted?
-Do you have any enemies or rivals?

So, you know, just a few little questions. Nothing too profound.

James Keegan wrote:

I'm still here, just wanted to give you some space while you worked on the campaign.

Okee doke, no problem.

ToM is easily one of the best (perhaps the best book WotC has published.

Keegan, answers to your questions under me profile in spoiler.

Works for me. I don't have weapons of legacy, but I like you guys having your own signature item that you become invested in. I plan on figuring out a way for you guys to improve on existing equipment rather than constantly swapping new stuff, so your most valued item will have staying power. As far as regional feats from Greyhawk, I'll take a look.

From what I've read so far it IS a very good book ... but don't buy it on my account. A binder works for me, but I don't have my heart set on it by any means - I just threw it out there without realising you'd already vetoed the ToM. As far as I'm concerned, restricting things to Core, SRD and "Planescape stuff" is probably a pretty wise idea.

As far as settling on class I might see what others come up with, but most likely if I dont go binder I will go wizard.

Liberty's Edge

Nice background questions by the way ... I'd give you the short answer now, but it'd probably be prettier if I spent some time writing out the more involved answers ... get back to you Mondayish...

Hey James,

I threw my lot in with PM003 and I'd loke give yours a go too, but I'm also working on setting up a pbp myself so I don't want to jump in on my alternate ticket, yet. Have you asked YeuxandI? Anyway, you're still planning, so there's no hurry. Let me know when you find out if she wants in and I'll decide whether or not to do both.

Mufflephrump.

Mothman-I'll take a look at the binder, regardless. I had been meaning to pick up the Tome of Magic, and since the price was right, might as well have been now. If it's not all that complicated, I figure I'll allow it. Vestiges fit pretty well with Planescape, due to the dead husks of deities floating around in the astral plane.

Kruelaid, I'll keep you around as an alternate for the time being, since I haven't heard from her about it. Feel free to throw out character concepts.

Beeler, liking the paladin. Looking forward to hearing more. Have you thought about whether or not he's considered going for a faction? Could be an interesting twist to have a Doomguard or Anarchist paladin.

Maybe if I have time at some point I'll start drawing your characters based on your descriptions.

The Exchange

James/Primemover

I have read this thread and got a touch confused. All I know is that I'd like to play.

I am in two games and just started running another but at the same time one other has died (with mwbeeler) and another is on the operating table and it doesn't look good.

I can get a character together quite quickly, once I know there's a slot free. However my experience of Planescape needs improvement, played Torment, and run a few diorama Sigil games at cons.

Cheers

Hi! I'm here! Am I too late?

Not too late, I do have a slot open since Heathansson backed out. Primemover003 is also doing a game, so I'm not too worried about leaving bashers like French Wolf out, since there will be another game.

I'm still getting everything figured out, but I'm going to try and strike a balance between being a character driven campaign and an epic, Planes-spanning action campaign. So, any character ideas are welcome; I want to get concept/background worked out for all the PCs before we do mechanics. We're starting in Sigil, the city of Doors. It's a city sitting inside this ring that rotates over a giant spire in the Outlands, ruled by the inscrutable and silent Lady of Pain. Sigil is the safest and most dangerous place on the Planes. It sits in the neutral ground of the Outlands and deities (called "Powers" by Sigil natives) are barred from entrance. However, everything from Eladrin, Devils, Demons and Devas to Tieflings, Aasimar and Primes (natives of the Prime Material Plane) all have to coexist...peacefully or otherwise, due to the otherwise completely open nature of the city. Fifteen factions dedicated to various philosophies hold sway throughout the city; forming alliances, nursing grudges, forming plots and seeking recruits.

I'll answer any further questions anyone has while I'm still working things out.

French Wolf,

primover003 has announced that he wants to start a game and has mucho experience with planescape, although it is regrettable to miss out on a game by the very twisted Mr. Keegan.

Of course anyone interested in planescape must be troubled and confused.... So I'm still waiting on pm003 to brew it up and create a post.

If that doesn't go through, a little bird told me there are some other pbps being cooked up, but they haven't been posted yet.

Very nice, lots to work with. I've got the plot forming and the beginnings are gettin' hammered out. Looks like a lot of free thinkers up here, no lawful bashers in the bunch yet (though there's still folks thinking about their characters, and that's not to mean they should feel discouraged from playing an orderly type). I plan on doing drawings of everyone's character when I have time (and a computer I can scan stuff on). Just for fun.

The first appearance was in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, I think. It's also in the two Greyhawk Background Feat articles in Dragons 315 and 319.
