If your mechanics include some sort of 'variable effect' or cosmic 'do-anything' power (such as magic is often depicted, in the comics, able to do whatever the plot calls for in a given issue), Tyroc seems like a suitable individual to have such a power. He's just another version of Zatanna, but instead of speaking a phrase backwards, he goes 'EOOOEOOOEOO!'
His most recent appearances appear to have dropped the random 'shout that sets things on fire' and 'shout that teleports me' for actual sonic manipulations powers.
In the last year, with 'just' sonic powers, he's been shown producing devastating sonic blasts (with even Mon-El calling him a 'heavy hitter,' suggesting that his blasts are on a level with people like Ligntning Lad), using his powers to sonogram a body, and demonstrated super-human hearing.
While he's not flinging electricity or fire, his sonic blast shouldn't require anything special, rules-wise, as it's just a blast. Super-hearing should already be covered for characters like Mon-El or Superboy.
That leaves the sonar trick, which is a variant form of X-Ray Vision, really. He's using sound waves to see inside stuff, instead of X-Rays, but the effect ends up the same, for the most part.
I'd be inclined to toss in a few other tricks, as well, that haven't been shown for Tyroc, but are relatively common 'sonic character' tricks in the comic-books.
Examples;
a hypnotic voice able to mesmerize others or suggest courses of action to them like a low powered version of mind control (Siryn and Songbird, in Marvel, use this technique),
ability to 'match pitch' with the vibrational resonance frequency of something, which would take a few seconds, but cause the object to begin to shake itself to pieces (a much more surgical and powerful version of what Emma Fitzgerald would do to shatter a wineglass, and the same sort of technique used to blow up kidneystones without opening up a patient, or by dolphins to rupture the swim bladders of fish, killing them by 'shouting' at them),
subvocal communication that others can't overhear (superfluous in a world with telepaths or Flight Rings, but still appropriate),
subsonic waves to disrupt the fluids in the inner ear, causing severe disorientation and nausea, as the target feels like they are uncontrollably 'falling in every direction at once,'
I wouldn't use this, just because it copies what another Legionnaire already does, and isn't really 'called-for,' but the same sort of sonic manipulation of vibrational frequency, in comic-book-logic, could be used to walk through walls, either by altering one's own frequency, or that of the wall. (Since that's Tinya's thing, I'd skip it, but included it as an example.)
As a Legionnaire, nonlethal attacks are always handy, and the inner-ear disruption / vertigo-inducement attack (for living foes) and the resonance 'glass shattering' trick (for weapons and robots) would give him a couple of options other than 'generic damaging blast attack.'

I'm in the midst of recollecting them. I have 1-3 right now and am awaiting on my local con to go find more. Between Legionnares and the Invaders comics, I have a good convention planned.

Hi MacBoyce, nice to see you here. I'm a very big supporter of the Legion of Super-Heroes. You may already know this but Valegrim and I have a Legion PBP that is going well and your always welcome to take a peak at it.
I can certainly understand your Mom only allowing one comic, mine was the same way until I could pay for it myself. My brother went for the Justice League, Batman, Superman comics and I picked Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes issue #212, strictly based on the cover. One comic and I was hooked.
So who are you favorite characters and why?
Comic conventions are wonderful, the perfect place to find everything your looking for. I learned to watch the prices though. Some booths sell a comic in very good condition for 50 cents on up to a couple of bucks. The next booth might sell the same issue for 5-10 dollars. Hope you find what your looking for.

I know you directed the question at Mac Boyce but I thought I'd chime in as I just stumbled upon this thread.
I started reading The Legion off and on around the time Matter Eater Lad consumed the Miracle Machine. But it wasn't till the 90's when I really got into them.
My Favorite characters
Dawnstar, I just loved the idea of being an interstellar tracker who could fly unaided through space.
Wildfire, what can I say I like disgruntled heroes
And Element Lad who pulled one of my favorite moves ever in the story arc from the 90's. A great tragic figure.

I have these stories at home but haven't read them yet. Dawnstar is one of the most fan art drawn Legionnaires they are, she's really popular withe artists. I remember when Wildfire introduced her to the other Legionnaires in order to help on a mission. A few of them were rather disgruntled with her in the beginning. I thought the way they drew her was fantastic.

Enjoy those issues in good health, and yes visually you could argue she was almost THE Iconic Legionnaire for the late 70s into the 80's. I was really hoping she might return to a higher level of activity after Geoff John's hard work to bring both Barry and Hal back, sadly it doesn't seem to be.
Now if only they could manage to combine/ tweak Matter Eater Lad with Bouncing Boy to make a somewhat elastic/stretchy hero who could swallow things whole and then digest them.

Now that would be interesting to see a Matter-Eater Lad/Bouncing Boy combo.
I've been designing a Legion role playing game for sometime now and we have a play by post game here on paizo. While working on the game, I go through every issue and pull out every detail in order to get it worked into the game system, though I have a long ways to go on this part of the project. I amass the information and categorize it in order to put it into the proper book when the time comes. I also started a Website for the game a few weeks ago and have just a few things posted there. Little by little, the monster project grows and I'm loving it.

The website is available to all. There is very little posted yet as it is brand new. I've never made a website before so it isn't a very exciting one. Here's the address:
Legion of Super-Heroes Role Playing Game.
My plans are to make it sort of an encyclopedia for Legion fans. Hopefully it will introduce people to the game I'm working on and attract more players. I haven't posted the hard and concrete game engine as I'm being somewhat cautious on that degree, yet at the same time, give vistors enough information to get an idea of what it is like.
I'm also using it as a place to keep track of campaigns, villains, etc. Let me know what you think of The Soul Harveror Greg. Feel free to offer suggestions to improve him.

Good stuff there. I have tended to use the old DC Heroes system from Mayfair Games (now Blood of Heroes from Pulsar). They even did a legion sourcebook with thier stat arrays for many of the Legions members and rogues gallery. Do keep me in mind if you get to a stage where your labor of love is readsy to be opened up to a wider audience.

I'm still looking for PBP playtesters, if your interested. We have a game going on here at Paizo. It's giving the combat system a test run as well as my ability to write up good power descriptions. I have a chair for you if you'd like to roll some dice and roleplay with the best of them.

Knowledge and experience isn't a problem. One of my players is a Marvel fan versus DC, and he gets by just fine. This particular individual is playing Lightning Lad. If your interested in Brainaic 5 I can send you a copy. Should I or do you want to check into some of the other Legionnaires first?
The only other two that are spoken for at the moment are Polar Boy and Wildfire.
You can email me at:

FINALLY some Legion Academy love...but not that much, as Power Boy and Lamprey are patted on the head and basically told that their more powerful versions are already on the team and will not be going anywhere any time soon- have they considered joining the SPs?
Bad writing, and it makes Rokk look like a jerk. Glad to see that Lydda spoke up for them. I'm hoping that most of the people rejected by the Legion in this way(how many DECADES have Power Boy et. al. been in the Academy now?) join the Subs and show the main team the finger.

![]() |

Bad writing, and it makes Rokk look like a jerk.
There's also the fact that Cosmic Boy stepped down as leader, and has no more business telling Power Boy and Lamprey that they aren't going to be Legionnaires than Tellus does. It's just awfully presumptuous of him to speak for the entire team like that.
This is the sort of decision that the Legion traditionally either votes on, or that the leader (who, in this case, is Mon-El) would make in time of emergency (the way that Shadow Lass, Dawnstar and Invisible Jacques were sort of in-battle-promoted).
I don't think that Power Boy and Lamprey deserve to be Legionnaires just for wanting to be Legionnaires, or for waiting patiently all these years, but it's sure not Cos' call to make.
And Takron-Galtos is pretty much a death sentence. It's been destroyed at least twice (most recently by Prime, when he killed 25,000 people breaking the LSV out), and has massacre-breakouts at the drop of a hat. Whether they deserve to be Legionnaires or not, Jed and Tayla (and Berta and Bobb) sure as hell deserve better than to be consigned to certain death the next time a writer wants to break people out of the TiG...

I winced every time Lydda brought up their old relationship in casual conversation. In the middle of an Academy field exercise. With people listening. Good heavens, but that woman needs to work through her personal issues before she gets a reputation.

i think she brought it up because he was being a jerk and needed to be reminded of the decisions he made in the past regarding lost opportunities. That said, it's the 31st century -I am sure consenting adults can bring up such topics in conversation without people getting all prudish.

I winced every time Lydda brought up their old relationship in casual conversation.
I loved it the first time. But she kept hammering it home, and it went from 'Zing!' to 'Awkward. Let it go.'
When she took the opportunity to snipe about waiting too long, and then agreed with him anyway that the kids needed a moment to turn it around, that was just over the top. She agreed with his reasoning, but still took a cheap shot.
I love Lydda, but she was introduced as a stalkeriffic wannabe girlfriend, and now seems to be skirting the edges of becoming an equally scary ex-girlfriend...
Still, this whole thing is clearly being played out for a reason (Paul isn't writing these words for nothing), and, IMO, it's all going to circle back to the mindwipe in Adventure, and Rokk having spent the last several years doubting his own ability to have a stable relationship, due to his messed up recollections of his teenaged years. I'm not in love with that idea (and kinda loathe the whole mindwipe thing and 'it's all Imra's fault' anyway), but it's been foreshadowed a couple of times now.

meh. I think this is going a bit too far in terms of a negative analysis of Lydda. These are kids that she has been training for the past twenty years, she is naturally going to be defensive while still pointing out flaws, although I do think there were some writing errors made in the issue. Rokk isn't a jerk and Lydda isn't a stalker. Still, they are flawed people as ever, so maybe we're both being a bit rough.

Loving the Legion comic for the most part so far, although I take issue with the handling of the academy and the subs to a lesser extent. Am looking forward to finding out who the much purported casualty will be.
Kinda hoping for it to be a red herring. There isn't a Legionnaire I'd want to see dead. (There are a few I'd like to see retired for awhile, to await a writer who is more interested in using them, 'though.)

To whom are you thinking about retirement for Set?

![]() |

To whom are you thinking about retirement for Set?
Brainiac 5 would be my number one choice to retire. In ye olde days, Mon-El, Saturn Girl and / or Invisible Kid were all co-creators of the Legion Flight Rings, and otherwise the 'team scientists,' with Dream Girl also taking on that role in changing Lightning Lasses powers to those of Light Lass, so that she could remain on the team alongside her brother. But now that it's the all-Brainy-retconned-to-have-invented-everything-ever show, he detracts from pretty much the rest of the team. Even whoever the Legion Leader is this week, be it Lightning Lad in the end of the Threeboot, or Cosmic Boy in this latest iteration, Brainy's always there to criticize and offer obvious snippy corrections and make them look bad at their jobs.
He (and Karate Kid) were my top two Legionnaires growing up, but ever since the 'Brainy' who was friends and laughed and smiled and loved Kara died and was replaced by Vril Dox 2.0, King of the Manipulative Mega-Jerks, I've fallen out of love with the character.
At some point, the writing changed from 'totally inspiring notion of a guy whose super-power is being really smart' to 'socially maladjusted twit who tells everyone else how stupid they are.'
After Brainy, a break for the Founders, who tend to get a bit overexposed, would also be neat. Tellus, in particular, would get more exposure if he wasn't the 'back-up telepath,' and Ayla as 'big gun' Lightning Lass changes the male/female dynamic a bit when Garth isn't around. (Since the majority of the zap-throwing powerhouse Legionnaires are male.)
This version of Cosmic Boy is also a bit of a curmudgeon and it's a little bit old. I'd love to see the character revitalized, perhaps exploring his powers by wearing a metal-fiber reinforced uniform (giving him a smidgen of invulnerability) and magnetically accelerating small metal items like a one-man railgun. But instead, he sits in the command chair and kvetches about how much his job sucks. Boring!
I really kinda love almost all the Legionnaires (well, Invisible Jacques has never grown on me, and Quislet is my own personal Comet Queen of annoying, but there's gotta be a few in any group of twenty to thirty people that don't thrill me!), so I'd rather see Brainy written as smart enough to not be a dick to everyone, Garth, Imra and Rokk as competent and confident and compelling, etc. but, since that ain't happening, I'd rather see them take a break and let Gim and Tinya and Shady and Cham and Tellus and some of my other favorites get some time on the center-stage.

I kinda love how he breaks out the snark when asked if there would be more to Wildfire and Dawnstar than their doomed romance business.
[paraphrasing, cause I'm too lazy to look it up] "No, we're gonna keep retelling the same story that's been done for decades, there's nothing new to do with these characters!"

Despite my lurking status, I do still exist. Just finished reading the new Legion Secret Origins and I was reasonably pleased. A simple story thus far which doesn't appear to change any canon. Way to go DC Comics.
Legion Lost, sadly isn't up to par...but may improve.
Star Trek Legion of Super-Heroes seems fine. Interesting idea for a cross over, not disappointed at all.

So all in all...Not Bad as far as I'm concerned.

Like seeing Comet Queen in the comic, as well as Chemical Kid. I have would have preferred Power Boy stay with the Legion, because working with the SP is just so declasse...

Declassed....I don't know maybe the authors will use it as an excuse to develop the SP part of the comic. Legion is like a cast of characters in a movie, with the UP, SP, etc. as supporting actors, their characters/roles need developing.

wow; made a spot check and see the great Eileen; woot
Hi Valgrim, good to hear from you as always. I took the summer off to handle some long time needed personal issues and now with those set aside I would like to turn my attention back to gaming, more specifically pick up where I left off on my game.
When we did the PBP, I underestimated the frustration of new players passing in and out. I ask you as a seasoned PBP gamer, was the amount of traffic we had (number of players who were in an out) normal or was it excessive?
I must say, I made the mistake of letting it get a bit personal, which was my bad. I felt that we did run into some serious problems with having 2 types of players..role players and roll players. Towards the end I thought we finally had a good group going but alas, the scenario did not move forward as needed and I think it killed the campaign.
So how do you feel about round 2?
I just set out a preliminary casting call to see if there was anyone interested in playing. I thought I would spend more time talking to each player and finding out what kind of play they enjoy the most in order to make this better this time around.
Your chair remains empty at the table, let me know if you want to sit down and play. If so, what are you interested in doing for a campaign? As of so far I have 1-2 people showing a little interest, I think they already game together. One of them talked about playing Brainiac 5 so that Legionnaire is temporarily reserved for now.
Your thoughts?
