I throw my vote in. Firefly really had me--last time I was hooked like that was the first season of X-files.

Ummm, no, I don't watch much TV.

I think Buffy was one of the best shows ever (although I refused to watch it for the first three years or so because I hated the name). Auuuuuggggghhhh! I HATED Buffy. And Angel was almost as bad.

hi5 Buffy and Angel never ever enjoyed.

The best thing I ever saw from these shows was some weird maggot guy in a truly awful costume.

Answering Vic's question, as a fan of Whedon's Firefly: I was not a fan of Buffy or Angel. I saw the prior's pilot and some random sampling of the latter.

The one momenet I enjoyed from the Buffy pilot was Charisma Carpenter asking someone, "What's your damage?" But I'd forgotten hearing the line originally in the film Heathers.

I suffered no debilitation at hearing the name, and was willing to believe a TV show could be better than its mediocre movie namesake. I think that if I had been younger when it was on I would have enjoyed it more. After all, when I was a kid I watched Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers... and that was all just a bunch of stretch pant studs arguing with suits of silver armor.

"Biddy biddy biddy, this is the exact same scene content and hairdresser used in The Love Boat, Buck."

Buffy...: never got into it. The characters didn't work for me, especially Buffy herself. I also dislike pop-vampires. The staking=death is just wrong, and so much about the "mythology" that things like Buffy use is just made up. Plus, my sister loves it, and I have over the years watched just too much for me.

All this talk about Firefly has made me start watching it again. My friend had my copy for about six months and I was starting to get the shakes. We named our daughter after Kaylee.

Lou Agresta named his daughter Kaylee too!!! Congrats Lou!

I own two sets of the series...one for loaning out, one for me, cause I don't even want to be without it for a SECOND!!!

I also own two copies of the movie.

I've bought over fifteen copies of the movie and five of the series...its one of my favorite gifts to people who haven't seen it.

The theme song is sad to me now...Fox did take the sky from us.

In China the fox is a creature of evil, it is associated with deception and is said to have the power of transformation.

That says it all.

Summer Glau... when she kicks ass at the end I just get so pumped I can hardly see straight, and generally piss off whoever I have dragged in front of my TV to watch it for the Nth time.

It's such an inspiring part of the story to see the quiet, seemingly frail River just get up and TOTALLY ROCK the kung fu! What a pity we didn't get more.

Another movie with a different angle on unleashing the animal fighter was The Rundown. When the Rock finally picks up some guns at the end I just go crazy.

After reaching a critical mass of useless information it gets easier and easier to inadvertently spew b*$~#++@.

I had to write a paper about foxes in my Chinese class. IF I remember correctly they are most often depicted as creatures that transform into temtresses, so-called devouring women who exploit men (see Fatal Attraction)... and in recent centuries there have been in increasing number of good foxes in Chinese Lit.

Perhaps when I said evil maybe I was subconsciously projecting my loathing of Fox news onto Chinese Foxes.

And oh yah, Firefly is an awesome show, if anyone hasnt seen and comes in here, can you get any better testimony that Nick Logue?

What I find funny is that much of the Firefly cast has migrated to Stargate.

Jewel Staite - Dr. Jennifer Keller (Atlantis)
Adam Baldwin - Col. Dixon (SG-1)
Morena Baccarin - Adria (SG-1)

Other members have found jobs on other SciFi tv shows:

Summer Glau - (unknown) (The 4400)
Mark Sheppard - (unnamed Link) (Section 2 or whatever that wierd show was called)
Nathan Fillion - The Vigilante (Justice League Unlimited)
Gina Torres - Black Canary (Justice League Unlimited)

"Reavers" from Firefly are excellent 'role models' for fiends - especially demons and slaughterkings (from BoVD).

Adam Baldwin ... Hal Jordan / ... (3 episodes, 2005)
Nathan Fillion ... Gregory Saunders / ... (2 episodes, 2005-2006)

I can reach and include:

Yes, lots of good moments. I like the Batman/Wonder Woman chemestry, as well as the Shareera/John Stewart/Vixen Triangle.

They way they tie Batman Beyond in is nice too.

unfortunately we don't get any of the Bat-gang due to the Bat Embargo. I'd liked to have seen Nightwing.

Oh well, at least I'll get to see most of the Titans (except Jerico *sob*) drawn in that style in the Judas Contract.

I re-watched Firefly on dvd last week (including a couple of episodes I had missed when it was on tv). It made me happy and sad. Why oh why was such a fantastic show axed after one season? When there is so much drivel that lasts so much longer?

I mean, they cancel Firefly after 13 episodes, and renew Survivor for 6 seasons. What's the logic in that. It's complete h@###!&!!.

Unfortunately, the logic is cash. A SF drama life Firefly is expensive to make. To make money, it would have to be VERY successful, and it is unfortunately a niche product. The reason most of these shows get cancelled after a single series is simply that moderate success is not enough to make sense commercially. Buffy was very unusual in how successful it was (and the original movie didn't do much) and even that would probably have been cheaper to make than a full-blown space opera like Firefly.

Compare it with a reality show, which is dirt cheap to make. The proliferation of reality shows is not because they are always terribly successful, but because they are so cheap to make that they don't have to be as successful as the Fireflys of this world to hit the necessary financial targets to get recommissioned for the next series. It's a horrible trend in tv, but money talks.

I'm a little late answering this, but better late than never. Buffy is my fave show of all time. I actually own all 7 season boxed sets and The Complete Series boxed set. Angel the series comes in second and Firefly third. Ironically, my wife ranks the shows in opposite order.

Strangely enough my two favorite characters are Xander and Willow, rather than the Slayer herself. I often tell my friends that I was "Xander" in high school. No one can write high school characters like Joss. I only wish Eliza had gone on to do the Faith series rather than Tru Calling.

It's also really cool to see Joss' footprint in TV shows today. Shows like Heroes, Smallville, and Veronica Mars owe Whedon a huge debt of gratitiude for showing them the way to write decent television.

My fave Seasons of Buffy from best to worst are as follows:
Season 3
Season 5
Season 2
Season 7
Season 6
Season 1
Season 4

Me, watched Buffy, Angel, Firefly; will give anything Joss does a try. Man can write a story and understands important elements of humor.

If you like Joss Whedon's work and you liked Firefily check out Serenity - Those Left Behind.

Its a comic book. Plot by Joss Whedon, script by Brett Matthews and art by Will Conrad.

It is supposed to be a prequel to the movie and covers the time in between the end of the TV show and the start of the movie. I haven't read it yet as I just got it two days ago. However, the art looks great!

I have the hard cover graphic novel edition. I believe it was released as a comic book mini series but I don't know the dates. Probably around the time of Serenity's release.

You should be able to get the graphic novel at any sizeable comic retailer. You can also get it at amazon.com.

Yeah, it was a short series released before the movie. Each issue had 2 different covers with a different main character on it, so collectors would by more than just one copy per issue. :)

I was frustrated cause I missed one issue, but found the graphic novel about a year later.

Another interesting prequel to the movie was a viral ad they released, uncredited and no way of knowing what it was in regards to. If i recall correctly, it was about 5 minutes, and was River looking strung out, being interrogated by an unseen, or partially obscurred guy. Sort of a flashback i guess to her conditioning time. Anyway I haven't seen it in a while, i'll see if i can dig up a link.

I do, in fact I gave my first copy of the series to a friend as way of an apology for breaking his chandelier, didn't stop me buying a replacement and that was before buying the movie rendition.

PS: When I first heard about Firefly I thought it was simply a western set in outer space and didn't think much about it... BUT I did make a point of watching it and found it extraordinary I suppose I shouldn't be surprised given JW also gave us Angel and Buffy but I have to say I don't understand their thinking but are these the same people who produced the pilot of global frequency and then cancelled it only to have the pilot leaked such that rather than acknowledging their mistake given how popular that was they declared it would never be released?

It just feels far too similar to be coincedence.
AND they have the rights for 10 years?
Talk about spiteful!
Aren't they in the business to make money and not play favourites?

No way man. Buffy was awesome. Absolutely no offense meant, just asking a question - did you really watch it? Or, like many people, (me including initially) were you turned off by the name, the association with the movie, some of the schtick, the portrayal of some of the beasties, the fact that "vampire" and "demon" initially seemed synonomous?

I did watch several episodes, and for some reason, I just couldn't stand it. It's wierd, but I can't really put a finger on what I didn't like about the show.

The Buffy seemed a bit "90210" to me and I made the mistake of skipping half of season 1 and 2. Then it got nasty and I was hooked.

Then i tried to rent the series but was having trouble getting it. Maybe oneday I'll get it in a boxed set.

As to Firefly...It annoys the hell out of me that "Coyboy culture" even made it into a scifi where the USA surendered to a Chinese-Indian Imperium becomming the dominant factor in its government.

I loved Firefly for lots of reasons, but one that most people seem to overlook was that they strove to maintain space realism. The entire setting is one star system, and they don't have FTL drives. And there are no sound effects in space. I thought they handled these things brilliantly, and I've never seen that done before.

I miss that show.

Liberty's Edge

Much as I love Firefly Scribe, not sure that I’m in total agreement with you on the realism aspect. Sure, no aliens and no FTL, but you’ve still got things like normalised gravity within ships with no spin or other real explanation, enormously ambitious terraforming projects completed in a reasonably short time period, a huge number of terraformable planets in that one system…

Alright, terraforming and artificial gravity probably fall into the realm of “technically feasible” whilst FTL and aliens are “theoretically possible” at best, but I wouldn’t call it that realistic.

I think there are something in the realm of 20 or 30 terraformed worlds mentioned, and whilst some of them are moons, that’s still an awful lot of planets that can be turned into Earth normal worlds, including gravity, light, heat etc.

It’s probably just me, but something like this with no explanation grates on me more than FTL (which probably just shows how accepted FTL has become in Sci-Fi).

I’m probably being picky, but I’m just saying…

Sovereign Court Contributor

Truth be told it wasn't just what I considered the realism of these things... it was the way that they were handled. It took me a while to figure out that they didn't have FTL, and even a few episodes to really connect with the no sound effects in space. And that was my favourite bit.

I was a little disappointed in Serenity when they had the final space battle inside some kind of gas cloud so that they could throw the sound effects back in. At least they gave that justification, and at least they didn't give a long-winded explanation of that justification, but I preferred the way they did it in the series.

I am curious though if Joss had a justification for artificial gravity. There are ways to do it, and I would have liked to know what he chose, but he didn't do anything that I spotted or recall.

EDIT: As far as the terraformable planets thing goes, I was willing to suspend my disbelief enough to accept that Humans chose that star system to colonize because they already knew it had a plethora of terraformable planets. And you know, our star system has something like 4 or 5, counting Earth itself and moons of some of the bigger planets. A lot of them would be lower gravity, but within reason.
