A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–4 (Subtiers 1–2 and 3–4).

The powerful nation of Cheliax has posted a public bounty that would richly reward the first team of explorers to chart a viable route across the Menador Mountains, linking the nations of Isger and Molthune (all to bypass the economic powerhouse of Druma, which has recently imposed higher taxes on key goods crossing its borders). Yet the Menador Mountains are an imposing obstacle, replete with steep slopes, snowy peaks, and territorial orcs. Even so, there are no finer explorers than the Pathfinders, and the Society has dispatched a team to collect the prize. Are the PCs ready to not only explore the foreboding mountains but also to compete with the rival teams and local inhabitants?

Great travel and exploration scenario

4/5

Ran this for a party of five level 1 characters and everybody had a great time, even though they fell short of meeting the faction goal.

We had to skip the optional encounter for time, unfortunately.

GMs only!:
The travel and exploration part was a lot of fun. The roleplaying encounter and the skill challenges were a little weird to run, though. It's not exactly clear if you are supposed to inform your players of the options they have, which turns these encounters into "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure"-style railroads, or if the players are supposed to come up with these actions themselves, which would require some VERY specific ideas about wilderness travel and exploration. I ended up doing a mix of both, where I would let them try to come up with the ideas themselves but filled in the blanks when they did not think of something.

A lot of fun!

5/5

I have now run and played this one, and it was fun from both sides of the screen.

It is nice to see scenarios that aren't designed for players to just be murder hobos. Being good people, investigating, and all was fun!

Another surprise was that the optional encounter was well worth running. Love it!

My players loved it as well!

Thank you, Tineke!

3/5

pretty good by itself, REALLY good as a repeatable. of course all the fights need a little more scaling. bad guys need more hp still. combats are still over in like 2 turns, much too soon.

Edit down 2 stars for removing repeatable.

Great choice for new players and returning ones

5/5

I have run this 4+ times and right now it is absolutely in my top 3 of scenarios I would choose to give new players a taste of PFS2.

It does a lot of things right and while it is caught in a bit of a weird place as far as the adjustments based on tier and number of players are concerned, that will apply to a lot of season 1 scenarios.

Of course, I also have some complaints (I would have preferred another map for the last encounter, and some things likely should scale a bit differently, and the name of that one NPC...) but it is a damn solid scenario.

Thanks to the solid mix of challenges and experiences (physical challenges, RP, and fluffy things) this is a great introduction to what org play scenarios can be, and IMHO a great example of what a PFS scenario should be.
I am looking forward to a follow up featuring some of the NPCs involved.

Great!!!

5/5

This is a wonderful man-vs-nature scenario. The tests were interesting, challenging, and could be approached in any number of ways. Good opportunities for innovation in combat, too.

Maps Question:
It looks like the Pathfinder Flip-Mat: Falls & Rapids was initially available physically earlier this month but now shows as unavailable. It's in my sidecart as a physical order. I'm assuming I will not be getting it?

That's an error on the title page. 1-05 is not a repeatable scenario, but 1-06 will be. Sorry about that!

The artwork on pg 2 seems to be wrong. It matches the artwork from #01-04, and makes more sense on that one.

Not only on the title page. I just reported a session of this adventure and it was listed as repeatable there, too.

Am I missing something? I can only find 9 treasure bundles in the adventure:

Tresure Bundle locations:

1 from the ravens nests
3 from the orcs
1 in the cave entrance
1 in the bedroom
1 from the ogre's gear
2 from his victim's bodies

And then again, the four lesser elixir of life you find don't count as treasure at all. Am I correct in assuming that those represent the missing bundle?

Also, I found a weird mismatch in the stats of one NPC:

NPC mismatch in stats:

The ogre has listed an ogre hook in his items in low tier. The weapon he uses, though, is a battle axe, which can not be found in his items.
In high tier, he uses a greataxe, which is correctly listed in his items. The picture shows him using a hook, though. So, which information is correct?

Last and probably least: The adventure has at one point listed a 7 player adjustment. Since the actual adjustment is not dependent on the number of players anymore, but on challenge points instead, how can that ever come into effect? The CP list doesn't mention any 7 player adjustment, so it will never be used, will it?

Oh, and about those adjustments: there are certain checks in the adventure that have an effect, if a number of checks equal or greater than the number of players are successes. Does that refer to the actual number of players at the table or to the number of players the challenge points tell you to adjust the adventure to?

Actual number of players. This should smooth out overall as we transition fully over to using CP scaling in sidebars (as long as that continues to be the preferred methodology.

Hi

Any news on when this is releasing to subscribers who haven't had it yet. Disappointing to have to wait beyond release date to get subscription copies.

Thanks

You should have it by now. Since you don't, you should start a thread in the Customer Service forum asking the Paizo folks to fix this for you, or call them on Monday if you prefer.

I'll answer in a spoiler as well.

treasure bundles:

In my final draft, the bedroom had two treasure bundeles. While the optional encounter gives loot, they do not count towards the treasure bundles, so as not to penalise players that skip it, while helping those parties that face a very challenging encounter.

So, I will go with how your final draft was ment and just add the missing bundle there. Thanks. And thanks for a really good adventure :)

So I just started reading through this scenario to run it this coming Friday, and so far it sounds fun. I don't want to sound like I'm knit-picking, but I think it's important. Not that it's significant, but there's something should be addressed and corrected.

Spoiler:
In the box from Calisro Benarry, the scenario calls for Cold Weather Gear. In the Core Rulebook, there is no Cold Weather Gear, just Winter Clothing under Clothing.

Especially here at the beginning we need to strive to use the 2E terms. I've asked forgiveness from my players many, many times for using 1E terms. They tell me not to worry about it, but I should. I'll admit, it's been challenging converting over from 1E to 2E and using new terminology for so many things. But, while we may know what we're talking about, new players who haven't played 1E won't know what to look for. And the PDF search feature will only turn up the correct phrase, not automatically convert from 1E to 2E.

If I find any more, I'll post them here. If I should follow a different protocol, please message me directly.

Thank you!

Question about a reward on the chronicle.

Spoiler:

The GM said the scenario grants 1 extra Horizon Hunters fame instead of the 2 granted by other factions so far. Is that a typo?

That is how some of the scenarios were handled in Starfinder Society. Not saying it is the same since it is a seperate system. It is not explained as clearly as in the Starfinder Scenarios.

Spoiler:
You still get the 4 to your primary, but the scenario just says 1 extra for Horizon Hunters

A nitpick for wiki purposes: is Jasper Caperinas a typo for Jasper Caperina?

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yes, that appears to be a typo on my part. It was defenitely ment to be Caperina, the family appearing in the Siege of Absalom special of PFS.

Shouldn't there be some kind of bonus for having Forager in the section where you see whether the PCs can forge for food?

Ran it today as a non-PFS game. It's a damn fine scenario and although it's linear, you'll never feel it. Great encounters, engaging challenges, good "let's chart this route" feel, excellent NPCs. Two thumbs up!

Grand Archive

Aw why would you take repeatable off of this. This is an amazing "this is the spirit of Pathfinder society" scenario, both inside game lore and outside of the game. This scenario is more the definition of Pathfinder Society than even Absalom Initiation. Initiation is kinda meh. This had actually decent stuff. It's not like yall care about society play anyway. Repeatable are the only thing saving you at the moment and that's barely working as is.

How difficult would this be to run in an online game?

In my experience, the only difficulty in running any scenario online is getting the maps for the online platform you're using. Actually running it is really no different than running in person.

I just noticed the B, C, and D encounter maps are in the PDF upside down lol

If the Treeline map is hurting your brain to look at it, just flip it 180 degrees!

Yes, this makes so much sense now. It just didn't jive before.

A question that I have to anyone, is for the Travel Checks, where exactly to do them, it's not very clear.
