Great Box for Monsters

5/5

I am so glad to have this box, it had a lot of the monsters needed for a campaign, and it helps to have so many figures on hand for play, at a great price for what you get. Highly recommend, especially for beginners who are just starting to play / build collections.

Included quantity useless for any game

3/5

If you want to use these in your games you need to buy at least 2 of these boxes. Ever ran an encounter with only 2 wolfs or a single werewolf? Because more is not included.

Apart from that there isn't a single colossal nor gargantuan pawn included (yeah I know, price, still sucks) so you'll have to come up with something on your own.

A good start into PF2 pawns

5/5

This package has actually close to 500 pawns, so the individual piece is still really cheap. As a collector, I see new artwork pretty much everywhere. In average I find it a bit better than the artwork of the PF1 Bestiary 1. There are several outstanding pieces (such as excellent and diverse elementals for all sizes), but also a few offenders (don't get me started on the comical looking balor). Very few pieces have an unfortunate scaling, for example the lemure appears really massive, while the quasit is hard to see (yes, the creature is tiny sized, but still...).

If you want to add the pawns to a PF1 collection, the only issue might be the renaming of a few creature types. Most of it is straight-forward ("derro" to "dero"), darkfolk now being called caligni is among the biggest changes. The new artwork means you can easily treat the newcomers as special versions. Given there are actually not that many new monsters, most pawns work for PF1 campaigns, even without porting the new monsters back.

Two of the sheets had very minor material damage, but nothing that would impact the fun. I'd give 4.5 stars if I could - given Paizo's friendly pricing here, I don't mind rounding up to 5 stars. Looking forward to the Bestiary 2 box and all the other upcoming pawns!

Great Value!

5/5

Great product, and no problems with the binding material. I'm a new DM and this is the first pawn box I've purchased. Needless to say, it has been a fantastic addition to my VERY small mini collection. This gives me a great baseline of enemies. It's true that there are not enough duplicates of some things, but there are plenty of alternatives that can fill those roles.

On a side note if you're looking for an organizer for all your pawns check out the Stanley Pro 25 Removable Compartment organizer.
https://imgur.com/a/tWBcd
It's a little crazy just how perfectly everything fit. I had just enough room for all of the cutouts, but not the bases. (Trimming about 1/8 of an inch off of the huge cards was required, but worth it.)

Great but some production flaws

1/5

Picked this up at my local game store excited to pop it open and start organizing. The first few Pawns I handled had the front art just fall right off the cardboard, it was as if there was no glue or binding material of any kind to keep it together. As I punched out more of the pawns I had more and more pawns consistently fall apart leading me to super glue repair many of them. Aside from this problem (which was a major headache for me) You get ALOT of pawns in this box and is a great alternative to miniatures.

What I did not like outside of the production issues I have experienced so far is that small number of some creatures like Orcs and others. But I understand the limitations of this box.

My 1 star review is mainly due to the horrible quality I have experienced of pawns themselves, but outside of that this is a solid 4 star product in my opinion.

I'd also like to know if this will be reprinted.

I'm also curious as to what the future of pawns will be? Are there plans to produce PDF collections for the creatures in the Monster Core? What about future Adventure Paths?

The pawn line has been canceled. I believe the intention was to reprint the Bestiary pawns going forward but that may have changed. I wouldn't bet on any new collections.

Erik Mona made a comment on reddit earlier this month when asked if the new Monster Core book will get a pawn box:

"This is actually very likely. Nothing to announce yet, but unlike the Adventure Path Pawns, the monster boxes have always been very strong sellers."

So hopefully we'll either see Bestiary 1 come out again, see a new set for the remaster, or both (I'd prefer both....).

Hoping for the best, the pawns are super useful.

Pawns are amazing. Rather than killing the line, bump the price by $20 or whatever to cover the increased printing costs.

The problem wasn't increased printing costs, the problem was they didn't sell. Bumping the price up would make them sell even fewer.

The Reddit comment linked just a few posts up includes Erik Mona plainly stating that the bestiary pawn boxes were "very strong sellers."

I would love if, as a compromise, we got the bestiary pawn sets back especially if that also includes pawn sets for stuff like Book of the dead and Rage of elements. Then I can live without the adventure paths... as a more nice to have.

Agreed. Personally, I'd even settle for just have a Monster Core set kept in print.

I own a few adventure path pawn sets that are just way too specific to be useful in most circumstances (Mummy's Mask being the biggest offender).

Compared to the Adventure Path pawns. Bestiaries will likely continue to get pawn sets. Adventure Paths won't.

Hello, just chiming in to add that I am interested in the mainline bestiary pawn boxes!

Paizo seems like such an awesome company, please reprint them! (or the fabled core remaster pawn reprint may be even better?)

I suspect the pawns didn't sell well mostly due to the pandemic limiting in-person groups from transitioning to 2e. With so many new folks getting into PF2E (myself included), I would love if Paizo could both reprint this pawn box as well as make new pawn boxes when the remaster drops. I have all of the battle cards and pawn boxes that are still available. They are amazing for in-person sessions. Thank you!

For anyone following this thread: it is for sale again! The printed edition!
I contacted customer support and this was their reply:

Thank you for reaching out to us.
After reviewing our database, we can confirm that there are a handful of Bestiary Pawn Box (2e) that are available for purchase.
If you wish to purchase the Pawn Box, we highly recommend you retrieve them now before they're sold out again.

I'm super sad, I missed the "restock" that Paizo found in their database by a couple of days (couldn't get the website to cooperate on my mobile browser and it was gone by the time I could log into a PC yesterday). Oh well, hopefully they do reprint this.

Well, for some reason it is AGAIN available... Not sure where they find these boxes. Some forgotten cellar down at the offices?

We are consolidating from 2 warehouses to 1 as we become a 95% remote work company, so yes we are likely for find treasures once thought lost. :)

Does this mean there's a potential for more of this product to become available? I've been scouring the web for one but sadly every place is out of stock.

Sad. I’d love to find the villian or monster box for less than triple digits.

I figured Id see if there is any more information we can get about this, I want to run a physical game and would love to have these. The other 2 pawn bestiaries look sick and I was also looking into 1e pawns cus id love to be able to mess with homebrew for even more monsters to through at a group. (Amazon seems to have some also) If I could also be pointed to some alternatives to use for monsters that would be awesome if its really going to be like mid 2024 or something for fresh pawns. (Legit everywhere that has the first bestiary pawn box is charging like 80 bucks and its super hard to find on top of it.)

If you don't mind me asking, where were you able to find it for $80 that actually has it available? I'm willing to pay that much for it, I just haven't found anyone that has it in stock.

The ones I found sold out of it quickly, Id check back a couple hours later and they were gone. Funny enough its the same with the 1e bestiary boxes. Its like they just dont exist too for resale or anything. It was mostly by looking on places like Ebay though.

Expect fresh pawns in 2024.

Have a sense for what part of the year that will be? I've been playing theater of the imagination-style since second edition was released, but just started running games for an after-school program (with kids who really benefit from having something visual). Would LOVE to be able to pick up a set of standard beasts and monsters -- Bestiary 2, 3, etc. are great, but I'm really looking for the core staples for these kids, whether that is Bestiary 1 or something new that covers the same foundational foes.

Any updates on this? Monster Core is two months out. It would be nice to have some idea of when we might expect the corresponding pawns.
