Just announced! Product image and description are not final.

Dark Archive

There are 410 different creatures in the Bestiary, counting every entry (the three different sizes for dragons and all), so this will have to hold more than 375 pawns, especially if low level creatures like goblins receive more than one pawn.
We can subtract all the gargantuan creatures, but still.

Will this have any bases in it, or will they have to be ordered separately? Will probably be my first pawnbox.

If this follows the previous pawn box products, this will most likely have a bag of medium, large and huge bases.

Pawn boxes always come with bases.

Nice! Can't wait to get this one.
I'm addicted to pawns.

The set list has been added!

378 different pawns plus 16 small doubles,
31 medium doublettes, 10 Large extras & 2 HUGE copies for a total of 437 pawns.

...

?

Why is the Deinosuchus (the BIG version of the crocodile) listed as a Dinosaur??

Nice to see some news on this front, but...two skeletons? Two zombies? Two giant rats? It seems like you'd need at least two boxes -- if not four -- to make most common, low-level encounters. This assortment is arguably less useful than the original bestiary box in that respect.

Obviously there is finite space and trade-offs had to be made, but they seem to have emphasized completeness over pure utility...which is not the direction I'd hoped they would take this time around.

I'm not sure how interesting this is for people that use the pawns, but october 2019's Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures Miniatures set contains pre-painted miniature versions of the following pawns:

Small:
#34 multiple versions
#37 multiple versions
#42
#43
#44

Medium:
#135
#136
#137
#158
#159
#160 multiple versions
#173
#174
#191
#193

Large:
#219
#266
#303
#324

HUGE:
#327
#339
#340
#359 two versions
#360

Personally i have 75% of the creatures in this Second Edition Bestiary Box as miniatures and only use pawns if i don't have enough of a creature or a reasonably similiar looking proxy.

If you are looking to make your encounters more memorable, by using miniatures for certain "Boss monsters", Legendary Adventures is a very good set to start, as it contains a large or HUGE miniature in each booster.
You should easily be able to tell if a huge creature is inside by weight alone.
If you re lucky, you might get the rare Adult Blue Dragon, the Allghollthu, three different Giants and Dragon Turtle are all uncommon & a case will get you every miniature in the set. ;-)

I've repeatedly said, I really want to see encounter packs for Pawns based on terrain, typical encounters, low-mid-high levels, etc etc. I'd buy those a lot more often and more frequently than I have ever the AP or Codex packs.

For reference, the 1st edition bestiary pawn box had 256 unique pawns, add in the repeats and you had a total count of 323 pawns.

So, over 100 more total pawns. All for only $5 above 1st edition pawn box prices. That much is fantastic! I’ll have to put some thought into storage... I like to store my pawns in those black and yellow Stanley parts boxes, and I’m not sure I can cram 437 pawns into one of those boxes...

Does this contain new art or is it recycled from previous pawns?

It is based on the all-new art in the new Second Edition Bestiary.

The creatures that are not depicted there SHOULD hopefully get all-new art, but i don't know if they do.

I do like the art on the box.

Decided to match up pawns to monsters in the bestiary. Other than the obvious Gargantuans not being in the pawn box I found these not listed:

Missing:
Ancient Blue Dragon H
Ancient Red Dragon H
Eagle S
War Horse L (2 Generic Horses listed could be used for these or others)
War Pony M
Zombie Plague M May be wrongly listed as Xulgath Plague?

Ancient Red dragons are gargantuan in size, aren't they? I mean, ancient Gold and Silver are gargantuan, as well as Ancient Green... Red dragons are supposed to be the largest of their kind.

Glad to see the Treerazer pawn!

Yes. The size of the ancient Red Dragon has been acknowledged to be an error (in the Bestiary 1 thread iirc). I think the same for the ancient Blue Dragon, but I'm not so sure on that one.

That would make more sense. Huge really doesn't seem big enough for Ancient red and blues.

Was just going based off of what is in my bestiary, and as Seventh Seal said they evidently erratta'd that for the red for sure.

If that is the case, then the outstanding is probably that the listing for Xulgath Plague is likely Zombie Plague and a missing eagle. If all it is missing is an eagle then this is a beyond expectations for what they are delivering.

I noted that there is Horse (2) that can be subbed in for the specific horses listed.

I'd love to see a pawn product devoted to mass numbers of common enemies (in my head it's called Squads & Swarms). A dozen goblins, with pyros, chanters, and wargs. Same with kobolds, skeletons, bandits, soldiers of a couple different factions.

Not sure how strong the audience would be for it, but I'd like to think it would sell as well as the NPC Codex or Heroes & Villains. Certainly, the permissions cost would be low.

We would have also accepted "two copies of Enemy Encounters" as a link. Not sure what I was thinking...

Corrected orge art?

Paizo Employee Creative Director

Yes; the ogre pawns will have art that is on-model for them that keeps them closer to the wide-mouthed, beady-eyed, iconic look designed by Wayne Reynolds back in Hook Mountain Massacre.

Hmm. Maybe it is just me, but I do not notice the difference. (Between the Orges in PF2 Beastry and Hook Mountain Massacre) .

The box looks bigger than the old ones. Is that just the mock-up, or is it actually bigger?

Do we get something inside of it to hold everything neatly instead of the old boxes random pile of pawns?

It's not listed as a Dinosaur in the Bestiary. Interesting weird typo I guess.

It is indeed bigger. Turns out that's what happens if you do a Bestiary with about 100 more monsters...

It's bigger than other sets. It has 24 sheets (compared to 16 for the First Edition Bestiary Box).

I currently have 6 Stanley organizer's I'm using for all my 1st Edition pawns.

I don't know if it's the one you use, but look into the Stanley 25-Removable Compartment Professional Organizer. It has 3 different sized trays, and all of the pawns fit almost perfectly in the respective tray.

Small (doubled up) and Medium fit in the small tray
Medium (doubled up) and Large fit in the medium tray
Large (doubled up) and Huge fit in the large tray.

If I'm looking at the right organizer, it looks like it has 12 small, 10 medium, and 4 large trays. So that would be how many of each size in each tray? Are there pawns larger than Huge?

I think I have all, or almost all, the PF1 pawn sets. How many of these organizers am I going to need? Will six be enough? :-)

I have four organizers of a similar type and they barely contain the contents of the pathfinder iron gods pawn set and the starfinder core, dead suns, pact worlds and alien archives pawn sets, and it isn't doing as good a job of things being easy to sort through as I would like.

So I doubt that six (if I am picturing the right thing) would be sufficient for the entirety of PF1s pawn collections. I'm thinking... 20 ish? depending on how you organize things (I like to sort things by creature types).

One of these bad boys will hold about 4 sets of first edition pawns.

I cut cardboard dividers from other boxes (like Amazon boxes) that are the height of the bestiary boxes (i.e. about two inches) and the length of them (i.e. about ten inches). The mediums and larges fit perfectly. The smalls are just messy because of size. The huge size pawns I do the same thing with but stick in a converse all-stars shoe box, because they're the right height for that.

Here is a second edition item that can be used for us 1st edition players thank you Paizo

Looking forward to picking this up, especially without getting a bunch of extra bases! I'm full up after the first few boxes.

I thought this was going to have bases included?

According to Facebook, no. Could always be a mistake.

Oh Bummer.

Gave away my Pawn collection a few years ago (with the bases). Thanks for the heads up though, will pick up a few sets of bases.

Pretty sure some of us have bags to spare. I know I do!

This product does indeed have bases. Not sure why the FB was confused, but there you have it.
