Great Box for Monsters

5/5

I am so glad to have this box, it had a lot of the monsters needed for a campaign, and it helps to have so many figures on hand for play, at a great price for what you get. Highly recommend, especially for beginners who are just starting to play / build collections.

Included quantity useless for any game

3/5

If you want to use these in your games you need to buy at least 2 of these boxes. Ever ran an encounter with only 2 wolfs or a single werewolf? Because more is not included.

Apart from that there isn't a single colossal nor gargantuan pawn included (yeah I know, price, still sucks) so you'll have to come up with something on your own.

A good start into PF2 pawns

5/5

This package has actually close to 500 pawns, so the individual piece is still really cheap. As a collector, I see new artwork pretty much everywhere. In average I find it a bit better than the artwork of the PF1 Bestiary 1. There are several outstanding pieces (such as excellent and diverse elementals for all sizes), but also a few offenders (don't get me started on the comical looking balor). Very few pieces have an unfortunate scaling, for example the lemure appears really massive, while the quasit is hard to see (yes, the creature is tiny sized, but still...).

If you want to add the pawns to a PF1 collection, the only issue might be the renaming of a few creature types. Most of it is straight-forward ("derro" to "dero"), darkfolk now being called caligni is among the biggest changes. The new artwork means you can easily treat the newcomers as special versions. Given there are actually not that many new monsters, most pawns work for PF1 campaigns, even without porting the new monsters back.

Two of the sheets had very minor material damage, but nothing that would impact the fun. I'd give 4.5 stars if I could - given Paizo's friendly pricing here, I don't mind rounding up to 5 stars. Looking forward to the Bestiary 2 box and all the other upcoming pawns!

Great Value!

5/5

Great product, and no problems with the binding material. I'm a new DM and this is the first pawn box I've purchased. Needless to say, it has been a fantastic addition to my VERY small mini collection. This gives me a great baseline of enemies. It's true that there are not enough duplicates of some things, but there are plenty of alternatives that can fill those roles.

On a side note if you're looking for an organizer for all your pawns check out the Stanley Pro 25 Removable Compartment organizer.
https://imgur.com/a/tWBcd
It's a little crazy just how perfectly everything fit. I had just enough room for all of the cutouts, but not the bases. (Trimming about 1/8 of an inch off of the huge cards was required, but worth it.)

Great but some production flaws

1/5

Picked this up at my local game store excited to pop it open and start organizing. The first few Pawns I handled had the front art just fall right off the cardboard, it was as if there was no glue or binding material of any kind to keep it together. As I punched out more of the pawns I had more and more pawns consistently fall apart leading me to super glue repair many of them. Aside from this problem (which was a major headache for me) You get ALOT of pawns in this box and is a great alternative to miniatures.

What I did not like outside of the production issues I have experienced so far is that small number of some creatures like Orcs and others. But I understand the limitations of this box.

My 1 star review is mainly due to the horrible quality I have experienced of pawns themselves, but outside of that this is a solid 4 star product in my opinion.

That doesn't include gargantuan either. And the "they" is a 3rd party seller, not Paizo

That's the replacement for this product; it will come in a box instead of a bag and has a few more bases. The paizo.com listing for it should go up soon.

Will it still have a random color medium base?

Yep, these should still include one random color medium base.

How many of these will be duplicates if one owns Bestiary boxes 1-6 already?

Silver Crusade

All of the art is new to my knowledge.

Are there any new creatures compared to 1-6?

Silver Crusade

There's a couple yeah.

Looking at the list in the description, pretty sure we’ve never had an animated broom pawn for one.

This box also features the first appearance of Treerazor in any format. That alone makes it worth getting for tables with plenty of existing pawns.

A Treerazor is a knife that shaves trees. Treerazer is a demon. Just saying. :-)

And yeah, Treerazer being in the box is sufficient justification for getting it. :-)

Outside of the box, which can be bulky, what would be the best way to transport and store these for a game session?

That case looks awesome. I wonder how many cases would be needed to store *all* the PF (1&2) and SF pawns? Six? Ten?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I'm not sure as I haven't bought one (yet), but here's a bit from one of the reviews:

I'm new to pawns, but why are there stats on the pawns? Doesn't that encourage metagaming?

Silver Crusade

Nope, just monster artwork. Think of them as "flat" minatures.

Arkmabat wrote:

Pawns don't have stats on them.

Did you confuse the Bestiary Pawns box with the Bestiary Battle Cards box?
Bestiary Battle cards

This product is pawns, in various sized to emulate the monster size on the battlemap. Nothing but artwork.

Well yeah, that's why I was worried when in the picture above, there's multiple numbers written on the pawns. One number seems to be what number it is in the set though. It just seems oddly distracting.

For example, the 13 on the Deep Gnome Rockwarden must refer to it being 13th in the set?

Yes these are just numers to identify the pawns. They have no game relevance.

Okay, thanks. Do you know if it's printed on both sides?

Yes, pawns usually have the same image on both sides.

Too big, didn't fit into the box. Paizo doesn't do Gargantuan pawns.

Understandable that Paizo doesn't do gargantuan pawns (16 squares on the grid, possibly much larger).

Hasn't Wizkids done some gargantuan critters in the "Battles" line? Seems like a good niche. Expensive, though.

WizKids: They definitely do gargantuan paintable minis. Though, at that size and price, you may want to check the toy isle first. ToySmith's Magic Dragon has an okay paint job and though I haven't measured, should be around the right size for a dragon I'd imagine. If not, you could probably make a base for it at the right size.

Furthermore, we don't offer Gargantuan bases, so we'd have to solve that problem as well.

I have created 3D models that you can print if you have a 3d printer or a friend with one:

I have made colossal and gargantuan bases, I use them with smaller pawns, I made them square instead of round so they fill the entire space correctly also. I also have created medium numbered bases and other misc things for gaming.

Ah, that was you. I was really happy to see them online, and pestered my brother until he printed them for Christmas. Thanks a lot! :)

The Colossal one ended up with 5x5 squares, accidently - not sure whether it was the model or something else.

Anyone else seeing high shipping for this on their pending subscription order? I'm seeing $21 for shipping to Colorado. I know it's 7 lbs, but the other 7 items in the shipment come in at 5 lbs and are $7 to ship! The bestiary pawns are being shipped USPS priority, while the rest is standard postal.

I would guess they have to use a larger box at the higher rate due to the size of the pawn box being bigger.

If you are someone who is sticking to PF1 until P2 is more seasoned, should I get this new set or try and find P1 Bestiary Box. I have been making due with beginner box pawns plus random miniatures and toys. It has been hard to find P1BB on the secondary market for "not hundreds of dollars"

Grand Lodge

You won’t find a cheap copy of the original. It’s out of print. Your best bet is to grab this one, as the pawns are useful for either edition. (You may not like the updated art is all.)

Yes, it is worth picking up for the unique Treerazer pawn which was not available in the previous edition. The rest of the pawns are most likely covered by the original Bestiary Box pawn set. However, those sets are going out of print, so this will be the only way to get more basic monsters to build one's armies for the foreseeable future.

Has anyone gotten their PDF or box yet?

Just like previous pawns, just with the new artwork.

How different is the new art? I have a source on the old box for a reasonable price, but I like the idea of 100 more pawns. I am not sure about the new art though.

Would an average game utilize both P1 BB1 and P2 BB1 in Golarion setting with official source (not homebrew) material, or would it be better to have say P2 BB1 and Enemy Encounters?

I can't seem to find monster codex box anywhere for a reasonable price.

Silver Crusade

The art matches that of the new art in the new Bestiary, so all the monsters are recognizable.

And there’s really no such thing as an “average game” about what you’re asking.

I'd get both boxes -- or maybe 2 of the new box. There aren't enough common critters like zombies, skeleton, dire rats, goblins, kobolds, etc. to run many encounters in either box alone.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hmmm...interesting...mariliths seem to be continually getting more clothes as time goes on...

O.O

YES!!!!

A much more dramatic and active style depiction! Something actually worthy or our greatness! Well done! :D

I have my beastiary box, but one page of the minis was printed upside down. The rounded side is on the bottom of each mini. It was the page containing the gelatinous cube.

If you contact customer support, they might be able to help you with that.

I pre-ordered these at a shop in WA state. What's a rough expected estimate?

Silver Crusade

You'd probably need to get that info from the shop you ordered from.
