A table. Really?

2/5

Was disappointed to see the set my son bought did not include 3 small/med NPCs or creatures, but instead a table. Yes a table. 5 foot wide table. What no chairs ?

Something applealing and something differnt.

4/5

The idea of a inn setting. where most adventures take place. was long in coming. few of the figure are in some sort of 'action pose'. Nicely done. I never seen one play about getting a bed. Now he plan on building a inn diorama
The nit i would pick is none are sitting down. Now the table are set to accommodate a character standing up. but a table 'and' chairs.
I was also have expecting some sort of canteen band. although a bard was in one set.
'(yes collecting a passed out drunk would be something. but what a better way to spy or gather information.)

one series I would like to see is mounted and unmounted. Hero on his mount or even a druid riding his/her animal companion if need be. Some looking regal other comical. Maybe even a pack mule. or pack horse. unlikely a pack centaur/ guide.
a side bar to this would be fantastical mounts. creatures with a saddle. Elephant dragons. wyverns. etc

The 4th best set - best faces yet!

4/5

GOOD:
The best human faces!
Lots of super-useful NPCs & PCs.
Some good large creatures missing from the Bestiary.
Very useful dressing pieces.
No 1 star minis.
BAD:
The 2 dwarves (the eyes).
Some minis have too dark paint jobs (Kobold Devilspeaker, Dog, Ghouls).
The large Bugbear.

Great set!

5/5

Definitely one of the best sets made so far. Faces have improved. Interesting mix of miniatures. My case had an extra bed and barrel!

My son and I did a full unboxing and review. Check it out here:

Neck-and-neck with Dungeons Deep for best release so far!!!

5/5

Once again, Cat has beat me to the punch with his excellent review. It says all it needs to say about all the necessary things.

Here's a couple thoughts to go along with it:

As quality has steadily improved, so have certain expectations. Keep them in check. For those of you that remember the issues from before, much of that is held in check with this set (and the Dungeons Deep set).

With realistic expectations in mind, none of the figures in my case had BAD faces. There were some with JUST OKAY faces, but none that struck me as Poor. This is a first for me, as I've had at least one straight up BAD face in every previous release. Usually the problem faces are humans and dwarves. The JUST OKAY faces are human and dwarven, but still a slight step up.

Ironically, the worst figures in the set are the two replacements they included for poor pieces in another set (the king, and Feiya the Witch iconic). I didn't include them as part of my official Rusty Dragon Inn star rating.

There was some inconsistency on a couple of the pieces, but the offense was so small for mine I'm not going to take off for it. No miniatures were missing pieces. The bendy weapons, for the most part, were under control.

In-hand miniatures will NEVER match up with digital art for the piece. If you expect it to do so you're never going to be happy. Digital art gives us a good idea of what the piece is striving for, not how it'll look exactly. Digital art also tends to be more colorful, as it doesn't have to take into account shading, washes, etc.

As Cat pointed out, these pieces are for those not willing to paint their own. Could I probably do a better job? No. I'm horrible at painting. Have I seen re-paints of Pathfinder Battles figures that look much better than the official factory release? Sure. Is the person that did the re-paint also painting hundreds of the same pieces at a time? Probably not. The moral of this exercise is to reinforce Cat's point regarding expected quality of the set.

Instead of reviewing each piece here, I'll stick with a short review on each piece in the singles section of The Rusty Dragon Inn. It sounds like Paizo is going to be opening some more boxes and releasing some more of the rare pieces that are out of stock. I'll make sure to review those throughout Sunday (Jan. 24th) for those trying to decide which pieces to purchase.

*BONUS* I got every piece in the set all in one case. This set is so good that I seriously suggest you purchase a case yourself, if it is within your means.

***Special thank you to Paizo for continuing to make sure all the pieces in the set can be obtained with the purchase of a case. True, once in a blue moon this doesn't happen, but your system is set up to do so in most case. It's a far cry from certain competitors, where the purchase of a case doesn't even attempt to net the buyer a full set. I (and I'm guessing most others) buy miniatures to use at our table, not go chasing after each piece like it's a chase piece in an action figure set. So again, thank you.***

How many of each figure do you get, on average, in a case of Rusty Dragon Inn?

How does that break down in a case?

**********Below is my guess**********

[Part 1]
-----Large-----
08 Rare / Large [~1 of each]
24 Uncommon / Large [~3 of each]
32 Total Large per case

[Part 2]
-----Rare-----
08 Rare / Large [~1 of each]
11 Rare / Medium & Small [~1 of Each]

-----Total-----
19 Total Rare per case [~1 of each]
57 Total Uncommon per case [~3 of each]
52 Total Common per case [~4 of each]
128 Total per case

**********Above is my guess**********

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

If you're looking for an official answer... WizKids doesn't share that kind of breakdown. (But I can say that the dungeon dressing is technically its own rarity, which is roughly equivalent to rare in that you will generally get 1–2 of each per case.)

Very cool! Thank you. I will have to revise my spreadsheet, and do some more figuring.

I would really like to see a set with just dungeon furniture in it!

Almost.

You get 20 rares per case:
One of #33-#44 (12 total) and one of each dressing piece plus one additional piece of two different dressings (8 total).
That accounts for 6 of 32 larges and leaves 26 uncommon larges.
There are 8 different large uncommons.
You get 4 of some, 3 of others and 2 of the rest.

That still leaves 82 small and medium minis.

There are 13 different common minis and 19 different uncommons (8 of them large, 11 small and medium).

You should get about 4 of most commons (5 of some, 3 of a few) for about 52 total.

That leaves about 30 uncommon (small and medium) minis.
You should get about 3 of each (2 of some).

20 Rares
56 Uncommons (26 of them large)
52 Commons

So you were pretty close.

Thank you for your help. My logins at work needed to be corrected, so I had to do something to pass the time while I wait, and this puzzle was one such thing I used to pass the time.

Sometimes people become resentful of people that enjoy buying, selling, and trading trading things they find fun, such as game items.

So before I ramble on my goals are to: (a) have fun, (b) break even, (c) obtain miniatures for playing with, and (d) trade miniatures online and at local shops around Chicago, and (e) to gain a variety of miniatures from different sets.

I will need to learn where to trade miniatures. There are local game shops to visit (Games-Plus being a huge and popular local shop), but also I need to find a good webpage or two in order to do some trading.

I enjoy buying, selling, and trading things for fun (resource management, like playing a cleric). My gaming group would like some new miniatures, and I thought that I would have plenty of time to invest in buying some miniatures, sorting them, listing them on eBay, and trading them at local shops. The goal would be to have fun trading, help my friends get some new miniatures, break even so my wife did not take offence, and to see my enemies driven before me. The job seems to be extended, but I am yet exited about selling, and trading some miniatures none-the-less.

I ordered 10 cases, 10 Inns, and 10 Beds. This should be a fun experiment at playing merchant.

I also built an inventory spreadsheet, and researched the apparent popularity of each figure on Miniature Market, Troll & Toad, and Cool Stuff Inc. I need to look at eBay at home at it is blocked at work.

If anyone know more places to look for the trade value of each figure, then please let me know.

This far I have this (likely flawed) list of trade value:

I think perhaps the dragon is overpriced, priced for the long haul, or perhaps there are lots of dragons out there . . . as there are many more of this rare than the other rares.

The barrel is popular, but less popular than the other dungeon dressings . . . I do not understand it . . . perhaps their were more of them made somehow.

---------

Based on how many of the commoner types of miniatures are sold out (even the common miniatures, and I think this is quite telling) there seems to be a hunger for normal people and objects like furniture, and dungeon dressing.

Perhaps a set based around townsfolk, and terrain items (stalls, crates, horse tying post, and whatnot) for the town would be popular.

A blacksmith miniature, and an anvil miniature.

Merchants, some stalls, and a peddler cart.

A huntsman, and hunting dogs . . . different working dogs . . . bullmastiff, german shepherd, dachshund, and bird(s) or prey (perhaps the bird on the huntsmans arm).

The Zombicide dogs sold out fast when they were first introduced, and the $20 set was selling for ~$35 for a while there . . . unpainted. You guys should definitely make some dogs.

Animals to hunt (?) . . . boar, fox, dear, rabbit, moose.

Trees and bushes (trees were / are quite popular from the Heroscape line).

Shepherd, sheep, and sheepdog.

Cow and milkmaid.

Different working people and things they interact with: washbasin, fish drying rack.

A fire, bedroll(s), tent(s)?

A raft.

As I mentioned above the Heroscape Trees were and are quite popular. Encounters around trees are quite common. I can see people wanting lots of trees and bushes of various types.

As I mentioned above the Zombicide dogs were/are quite popular ($20 retail price and were selling on eBay for ~$35 for a while). I think a lack of painted miniature dogs is an incentive to make some.

If the low price of oil is making plastic cheaper, then perhaps now is the time to make and stock up on larger items like trees.

I don't know how cost-effective trees would be given the options that already exist. With trees you need quite a few, and they're big. You simply can't beat the price of something like these trees crafting and hobby stores have them, they look nice, and you can find the sizes and types you want. I just buy a little tacky putty to keep them fixed in place ... quick little forest that looks great!

50 minis + bar + 2 special repaints of fixed sculpts that had messed up faces that resulting in sub-par paint jobs (1/each per case).

The barrels and crates are selling for quite a bit more than one would think as they are part of a set. The trees would be similar, but may cost too much if plastic is expensive.

The miniatures are numbered 1-44.

The bar is the unnumbered 45.
There are 6 unnumbered dressing pieces.
There are repainted King Irovetti and Feiya minis from the "Legends of Golarion" and "Reign of Winter sets.

It looks like single boosters and bricks have sold out!

Only cases remain (likely in limited quantity).

The entire 1. Printing has sold out from wizkids!

There will be a 2. Printing in May.

I got this from one of germany's biggest dealer.

A couple notes:

1. I can confirm that this set is doing well. But even if WizKids has sold out (which I am not able to confirm or deny), that doesn't mean that all of the distributors they sell to have necessarily sold out, so retailers may still be able to buy some.

2. We have talked about the possibility of reprints with WizKids in general terms, but if they have committed to a reprint for this set, I haven't heard it yet. (That doesn't mean it's impossible.)

1. You are most probably right that some distributors have sold out and others have not.

2. My local german dealer has very good connections all over europe, so if he tells me he can't get any more boosters, bricks or cases till the reprint in may, i believe him, as he has been right 90%+ in the past.

The fact that this set sells so good is great. The quality of the faces went up considerably and that seems to have a direct impact on sales.
I feel happy that the future of the line seems to be assured and remains in the capable hands of Eric Mona (and all others involved) who worked hard to ensure this.
Thank you!

Marco,

I have verified with WizKids that they have not announced a reprint of this set. (To give you an idea of how unlikely reprints are with them, in the last six years, they have only reprinted one thing: their Dice Masters launch, where the initial supply was vastly lower than the demand.)

I daresay the guy who said there was a reprint in May was probably referring to the next Wizkids Icons of the Realms set (all minis are pretty much the same, right?)

That'll probably get to Europe around May.

Wizkids has always been very conscious of how reprints will affect new stock, One of the Early DC Heroclix sets sold out in under a month, and had multiple figures going for over $100 each, and was not reprinted, because said reprint run would have come out around the same time as the next Marvel heroclix set. (At least that was the reason the heroclix community was given) I could see something similar here.

I finally got this set. Needed to order it online, as my local shop was unable to get it in stock as their distributor hasn't had any new pathfinder miniatures come in for months. So I;m still out of luck for Iconics 4,5 and 6 :(

Anyway, the figures are great overall. And I'm really happy with the two replacement figures, save for the fact that they are both bug-eyed! It's like the painter went overboard making sure eyes were on these figures. But at least Feiya doesn't have a melted face so if I want repaint the eyes I at least can do so.

I just have to say that I love this set and see why it's popular. I actually think that my favorite miniature is Beaky. He is one of the best looking owlbear miniatures I have seen and I'm glad I got four of him so I can use him in some great encounters.

Already had a fun scenario play out with my husband as we were unpacking the set.

Quivering cube slides up to the bar: "I'll have a human please"
Drunken farmer sitting beside the cube: "If it was that easy, I'd already have a wife!"

Very sad this set had a VERY EXTREMELY short availability run (~ 1 month), with no reprints on the horizon. :( Bad WizKids!

It's still available, Paizo just ordered fewer cases this time around (or didn't restock when they sold out their initial order).

Noble Knight Games have it in stock, for example.

Picked up a brick + one booster yesterday. Fantastic job on all the humanoid figures this time. All the characters were very evocative and fun. I didn't catch any with bendy sword syndrome. All the figures had great details. I was a little bummed in that one of my boxes was a complete dupe of the other (the riding horse, bugbear mystic, dwarf bard, and barrel). But what can you do. I ended up with 3 dwarf bards, two dancing girls, a serving girl, the draft horse, wagon, silver dragon, owlbear/beaky, kobold devilspeaker, kobold trapmaker, farmer, ghoul huntsman, ghoul monarch, two bunyips, vampire spawn, two pious guards, guard, dwarf wizard, aristocrat, riding dog, bugbear tyrant, frost giant ice mage, bugbear flesh glutton, flesh golem, Ranzak, and Cayden Cailen.

Are you guys considering another printing of this so that new subscribers can start with this set?

This is a Wizkids product not a Paizo one, so paizo has no control over if a new printing. Historically, I don't think wizkidz have ever done a second press of a set since they have been owned by NECA .

It's also not yet out of print, it's just that Paizo either reduced the number of cases they ordered this time around or they sold more than usual (or both).

Miniature Market currently have two cases left (for $380), although they've sold out of the bar incentives.

Noble Knight Games only just sold out and they say they've got more on order (although I don't always trust those "more on the way" listings).

Huh? ._. To ensure that boosters packs are bought? I guess it makes sense that could be a problem

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think it was more about inventory management than a strategy for selling boosters. Maintaining a large and ever-expanding catalog of singles is no doubt a lot of effort for probably minimal gain.

Sczarni

As a store, opening a pack gets you about $20-25 worth of minis on average. Setting up product pages for 45 new products takes time costing wages, for not much additional gain over a sealed pack. it also takes additional time fore the warehouse crew to find the correct mini, and additional issues with minis breaking when in the warehouse.

Any chance Paizo will be selling this case again in the future?

Individual minis, maybe, as part of some future set.

I don't think Wizkids has ever resold a minis set.
