Chapter 4: "The Midnight Isles"
by Greg A. Vaughan and James Jacobs

After an audience with the Crusader Queen, the heroes journey to a fortress that straddles the boundary between this world and the demon-haunted realm of the Abyss. There, they must face powerful agents of the architects of the Worldwound and put a stop to the production of the powerful elixirs being used to grant demons mythic power. Beyond the fortress lies the Abyssal realm of the Midnight Isles, lair of the succubus queen Nocticula—and the source of the crystals used to create the mystical elixirs. Can the heroes navigate the intrigues of the Midnight Isles to strike a critical blow for the forces of good? And can they avoid losing their souls to darkness in the process?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path and includes:

  • "The Midnight Isles,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 12th-level characters with 5 mythic tiers, by James Jacobs and Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A look into the vast horror of the Abyss and an exploration of its many corrupted realms, by Mike Shel.
  • An overview of Nocticula’s realm of the Midnight Isles in a gazetteer of her capital city, by James Jacobs.
  • A demonic siege in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Robin D. Laws.
  • Four new monsters, by Amanda Hamon and James Jacobs.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Lacks that mythic feel

3/5

Read my full review on Of Dice and Pen.

The Midnight Isles is the first adventure in Wrath of the Righteous to lose that mythic quality and feel like just another adventure. It’s a decent adventure, sure, but it doesn’t stand out the way the other instalments in this adventure path have. In part, this is because planar adventures already have many of the qualities that make an adventure feel “mythic” and so, in order to make them stand out even more, they have to have something more than other planar adventures have—and I really don’t think this one does. In part, it’s also due to the fact that this adventure feels rather “done before”. It bears a lot of similarities to some earlier Paizo adventures, particularly parts of the Savage Tide adventure path. Of course, to a certain extent, all adventures reuse common patterns and tropes, but this one seems to do so to a greater extent. In his foreword, James Jacobs explains that the reason there are two authors on this adventure is because he and Greg A. Vaughan helped each other out due to both of them have very busy and tight schedules. It’s therefore not surprising, I suppose, that in order get it completed, they had to rely on reusing tried-and-true tropes. But alas, tried-and-true does not make for a mythic feel. The result is a planar adventure that seems rather ordinary when compared to the adventures that have led up to it.

That is indeed ...

Spoiler:
...Arueshalae, the redeemed succubus who becomes the last of the 8 recurring allied NPCs in this adventure path!

WOW! (And I never thought I'd say this about a succubus - she is BEAUTIFUL) heh heh although that likely has a lot to do with Wayne Reynolds artwork. :)

I'm hopeful with such a rendering that Arueshalae will have a miniature to represent her in the Wrath of the Righteous set. (Although I understand that there are a lot of other miniatures (and at least one other succubi to do)).

WotR is DEFINITELY on my APs to GM "docket" ... first I must finish RotR, then it's on to Reign of Winter, then Jade Regent, then Shattered Star, ... so likely "Wrath of the Righteous" after that line-up. (Although my line up has already changed once) ... ;)

Cool. Also didn't know I needed a spoiler on my post, thanks for adding it.

For some reason, the name "midnight isles" evokes a mental image of huge barren chunks of rock hanging in a black void, maybe with castles built on them. For that reason, the forest where the cover image battle goes on really surprised me...

do we know how exactly the isles look like? 0_0

Nice to see Greg's streak continue :)

Liberty's Edge

Any chance that the cover image will be available as a separate piece of art? This is the first time I've actually been inspired to want to own an illustration of a succubus. Most artists take the lazy way out and tart them up like some nightmare domme, but THIS image actually makes her look attractive and tempting, not just sleazy.

New monsters from James Jacobs? Wanna bet he statted out Noticula?

It's rather surprising to see James Jacobs doing the gazetteer here too... He's never indicated any sort of like of demons in the past...

I know, right!? I was surprised he wanted to write those bits. ;)

Ha.

And a redeemed, Desna-worshiping succubus? Madness. James probably had nothing to do with any of that at all :)

Not only was James involved, but James squared!

His idea though. :)

Looking forward to taking down Nocticula once and for all. Any deity who (deliberately) counts rapists among her followers is asking for a huge beat-down.

I thought that was her brother (and occasional lover), Socothbenoth.

Him too.

But under her "Worshipers" entry in Lords of Chaos, it lists "assassins, drow, rapists, shadow-using creatures, succubi, whores".

Paizo Employee Creative Director

Nocticula...

Spoiler:
...isn't really on the "chopping block" in this adventure path though... so you might need to save that bit of righteousness for another day... or perhaps wait to see how the AP ends up, even! There might be some... surprises.

The two demon lords that this adventure expects MIGHT get killed are Baphomet and Deskari... although even then, those deaths aren't 100% required for a successful ending to the plot.

James Jacobs wrote:
Nocticula... ** spoiler omitted **

But she does get stats at some point, doesn't she?

I'm surprised that:
Deskari and Baphomet can live and you can still end the story on a good note. I guess if you close the Worldwound, it really doesn't matter if they're still around. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure the righteous demon-smiting murderhobo PCs will not let them walk.

The Exchange

James Jacobs wrote:
Nocticula... ** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
And of course actually killing the demon lords requires winning a fight against them twice, and they can easily just look to avoid the PCs after loosing round 1, so there's no real reason for the demon lords to die completely in this AP.

But we must smite them most mightily lest the virility of righteous murderhobos otherwise remains forever ... "incomplete".

Anyone know what those spiky dudes are on the cover? Don't look like any demons I'm familiar with, but do look pretty bad a$$!

They're shadow demons, one of the more common denizens of the Midnight Isles.

Just to be clear, Nocticula's stats ARE in this book, right? If they are, it's going to be fun if (When?) the party paladin decides to go Lawful Stupid and track her down! Can we say 'dead paladin', anyone? ;)

I don't particularly any Paladin would be stupid enough to challenge a demon lord in her own domain. Unless the player really wants to play a new character, that is. But you'd have to be a worshipper of a Lawful Good suicide friendly deity to even think about that.

He should probably not even be able to find her - this is her domain, and the game is played by her rules. She should be able to kill any foolish paladin 17 different ways by the time that paladin could find her.

Not only are her stats in this book...

Spoiler:
... but her appearance and interaction with the PCs is a SIGNIFICANT part of the adventure.

Mwahahaha! Thank you, Mr. Jacobs!

I'd imagine that if you try to attack her, it's pretty much a "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies" moment, right?

I know I would get a little upset if somebody attacked me in my own home. :D

That's what I tell my group aaalll the time: you're the trespassers. Of course people get upset when you break into their homes and steal their stuff. Tsts.

I notice a lot of love for the succubus in paizo products. They appear quite often as significant enemies. What's with all the love for succubi? I ask because I find them ultimately rather boring as an example of demon kind. May work as an NPCS though ;)

I suspect the answer is that the creative director loves demons, especially the more subtle ones.

Lust is everybody's favourite sin.

Just my luck....I can't wait for Part 4 as it sounds so much interesting from the teaser in Demon's Heresy and it is going to be late.....

This is one of the few succubi drawings in which the succubus is fully clothed.

I used to love Succubi and Incubus, but now they are just as overused as Cuddle Vampires, Sexy Werewolves and Endless Zombies.

Yep same here. I'm pretty certain the overuse is largely in my head, but they feel as if have appeared in so many modules now as key villains. That said so far there's been two I think in WotR, but I suspect many, many more will appear in this module since its related to Nocticula. I can certainly understand if Mr Jacobs loves demons in the game, I happen to think they make a great enemy, useable across all levels and incredible varied. It's part of the reason I so wanted to run this AP (the other being the mythic rules)

Yes, my righteous murder hobos have bribed me with much to ensure their virility is sated by the deaths of at least TWO demon lords...

Such bribes included two dozen chocolate chunk cookies so stuffed with chocolate that they must have used crowbars to get the chocolate truffle filling inside, a steak dinner at the Texas Roadhouse, and a hardbound copy of the Fifth Edition Shadowrun rulebook...

Yup...those two demon lords are going DOWN!

Looks at the January schedule...

Wow, I'm suddenly much less regretful about cancelling my Campaign Setting subscription. It's going to suck enough budgeting for the 3 APs in a span of a few weeks.

It should read Dec 25th now, unless my Apple Products have become possessed.......wait a minute.

Waitaminute....you mean part 4, 5, and 6 are all being squeezed into January.

What are they, TAZY?

Well, it will be a nice New Year if that's the case....

My bad. The Midnight Isles is listed as a January release under the product schedule, but looks like it'll be available to purchase for non-subscribers on 12/25. So not in January I guess? Still, just looking at January (assuming it hasn't been fixed yet) makes my wallet cry.

We've pushed out our estimates on how long the next subscription shipping will take, taking into account the holidays, which is why it's displaying in January. As always, shipping dates for our subscriptions are very much subject to change.

It got pushed back a day
