This is an excellent miniature. I love the insect wings. I haven't run the Wrath of the Righteous adventure path so I haven't used this miniature at all but it is still a cool piece to have. If you are running the adventure path, it is a must have.

Deskari - The Giant Insect Demon Lord YOU Deserve!

5/5

This is a really nice mini. It has a lot of detail and a lot of love put into it. The mini has a nice presence about it. He is a very unique mini, but should you need some kind of insect-like monstrosity, then this mini is well worth it.

High Quality- A great buy

5/5

The sculpt is really great quality. The pain is well done. A truly fearsome addition to my Minis set. Having each leg as an anchor point really helps to stabilize the mini on the stand, and the space underneath allows for space sharing by smaller minis

Awe-Inspiring!

5/5

Deskari looks great! The paint quality is great and he was in perfect condition in the box.

I am very happy to get gargantuan figures that are not dragons.

I suddenly want to purchase a case so I can get my hands on this guy. We don't even use maps (well, not often), I just want to horrify my players with it.

Looks like there's a typo in the description though.

Did I miss this mini somewhere? I have not seen a picture of it yet.

Click the mini thumbnail of the box to zoom, and you can see a photo of the mini printed on the side.

Ahh, thank you.

Yes, it does look very good. Will be nice to see that sitting next to my other gargantuans.

Fixed!

I just hope that the wings and any other body parts are one piece. None of the dragon wings or tails are a good fit. Those were such poor quality. Making them one piece like the wotc dragons would have made them much better. The Rune Giant was great though.

I have just glued them and it has worked fine.

Actually the Wings of the Dragons were MEANT to be glued. It just takes a small dab of super glue and it was a solid piece. The Dragons are good and the quality of the paint jobs on them superb. So while you might think them sub-par I vote for a multi-piece figure once again if it is of the same quality of the dragons!! :)

I can see where PFF64 is coming from, though. The wings and tail on both of my Blue Dragons fit relatively well. It was only one wing (I believe the left?) that didn’t fit as tight as I would have liked. However, all the pieces fit quite well, so there was no indication to say that “these need to be glued”.

But when I got my Skeletal Dragons, they were the exact opposite. Neither of the wings fit well at all. One I could pseudo-fit into the socket, but it took a lot of guiding to get it in, although when picking up the dragon, it just ended up falling out. I was pretty frustrated to say the least.

So yes, I’ll glue all the pieces in from now on, but I will admit I would rather we received them in one piece. Yes, I know they can’t make a single mold for these kind of sculpts (and love the sculpts!), but I would prefer that they put the pieces together before shipping them out instead of trying to use the one size fits all box for all their gargantuans.

Grand Lodge

Hobbun,
With the Blue dragon there was plenty of material to work with and they could make the connections on the wings more stout as the saying goes. But on the dracolich one they had less to work with because of the type of dragon it is. The bone type of design with the dragon leaves for less material to work with and therefor the connection is not quite as good. But with super glue it is just as good as if it was a solid piece. If for some reason it does come out (which it should not) there you can just give it a little bit of a re-glue.

I actually like the dragons over the ones from WotC. The ones from WotC seemed a little bit on the hefty side with little to no detail as far as the paint job or even the sculpt itself. I like the WotC dragons do not get me wrong... but in comparison to the Pathfinder Dragons.. not even a close comparison. I would buy the Pathfinder Dragons Hands Down!!! :)

I have no special knowledge of the process, but I'd wager that there are lots of good reasons for shipping the wings detached. The biggest one is fragility - It's better to ship something disassembled than have to send lots of replacements for ones damaged in shipping - Particularly when this is a case incentive, which gives people good reasons to fraudulently want a second one.

Another is shipping cost - If you ship with wings assembled, and the box is now twice as wide and twice as deep, you can only fit a quarter as many of them on a pallet, which increases your freight cost, both from China and into distribution.

There are two things I liked about the WotC dragons compared to the PFB ones. One, they came in one piece, and two, they were bigger. Where the PFB dragon sculpts are worlds better than the WotC ones, they are just a bit too small on what I have experienced to be a Gargantuan dragon in the games I have played. I picture a gargantuan more along the lines of the black or white dragons from WotC.

That said, the sculpts are much, much better with PFB. The detail is astounding on the dragons, and with some rare exceptions, the whole PFB line in general. And where I prefer the dragons came in one piece, Ross brings up some really excellent points on why they don’t do so. Either way, I have every intention of continuing to buy the gargantuans, unless the quality lessens, which I doubt it will.

I just looked and there is no mention of glue being needed on the package. If they expect the wings to snap on then they should snap on. Glue is never mentioned. Making them one piece fixes this. The tail is another problem that would also be fixed if the figure was one piece. Mine went on fine but it was not a great fit. I guess this problem does have one benefit to me. It saves me money since I won't buy anymore figures that have wings and tails that are not attached.

I reserved this at one of my local game shops, I can't wait for December. This will be my Christmas present for myself!

Then you're probably out for a lot of these big minis, unfortunately, because they will often be shipped in multiple pieces. This reduces the cost of both the product itself and of shipping (because the box is smaller), and it makes the figures more durable and less likely to break in shipping.

The figures are not supposed to require glue. Sometimes a joint doesn't fit perfectly, and you may need/want to glue it together to make it fit. That's far preferable, at least to me, to charging $50 per figure and replacing a third of them due to breakage.

If losing your business on these large figures is the price to pay for that, I think we're going to have to live with it.

I did not expect anything to change. Paizo has become too large to listen to product problems. I just wanted to say why I am disappointed in not being able to buy any of the gargantuan figures. I would not have any problem with the multiple pieces if they were a better fit. It should be obvious that there is a problem if everybody listed above has to glue the pieces to make them stay on.

I don't think it's fair to say that Paizo is too big to listen to product problems. You've got the direct ear of one of the company's senior executives addressing your specific gripe directly on a public messageboard.

In many, many cases when our customers have issues with something we produce we move heaven and earth to address them specifically. For example, when the Pathfinder Battles line started, many customers were dissatisfied with the packaging so we worked with WizKids to address that issue specifically.

I can assure you that we will do everything we can to make sure that the pieces of larger miniatures fit together well. The wings on the last two dragons have been tricky, but I have them fully assembled in my office with no use of glue, and lots of folks are likewise using them without a "permanent" solution.

There were, to my knowledge, no problems with the multi-part Rune Giant, and really I haven't heard too many complaints about the fit of the Gargantuan Blue in Shattered Star, either.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any problems after assembling multiple production-run copies of the Gargantuan Green Dragon from Legends of Golarion, either.

It's not that we don't listen, it's that we cannot solve every single issue to the satisfaction of every single customer in every single instance.

And I'm with Curmudgeonly and Erik ... I also haven't had any issues with my (2) Rune Giants, nor my (1) Gargantuan Blue Dragon (pieces fit together, and no use of glue).

The Rune Giant was perfect. Everything was great with that. I took another look at the picture of Deskari and maybe I was wrong. From what I can see the figure either has no wings or they are very small. I will just give the figures another chance and buy it when it comes out.

Grand Lodge

Eric,
Whenever I see a mini that comes in a "meant to be assembled" state. I tend to want to put them together like I would any of the metal miniatures (minus the pins of course) :)

So I do use glue and think it a part of owning minis at times. While the wings and such might not need glue necessarily, it certainly does not hurt them in my opinion then :)

It is just me :)
Though I have to admit my Gargantuan Blue does not have any glue on it at the moment ( my daughter put it away some where in a container in the garage and I can't find it at the moment hehe) Time for some major fall cleaning of my garage! :)

I'm glad to hear that. It's a little pathetic, but I'm hopeless at any crafty stuff. I have one Skeletal dragon with no glue but it doesnt hold up to any handling. The other has gluey fingerprints all over it. :(

None of the other figures I've got have needed any glue and I'm glad to hear that's the aim, even if there'll be the odd exception here and there.

Steve, I would suggest Locktite Gel consistencey super glue It has the hold of super glue, but is a gel form instead of liquid, so 1) it is easier to place where you want it and 2) it is easier to see where it is to wipe off any excess

Yes, for miniatures I almost always use the gels rather than straight-up superglue.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely try that next time glue is required.

The Gels also seem to dry faster and fills gaps near the seam of the glued parts and even blend it so it looks more natural to the figure too.At least a little bit :)

The gel super glue works really well with minis, in my experience.

Personally I rather the lower price and glue if needed. I also think paizo are damned good at listening to their customer base - they certainly don't come across as too big headed to listen. SO far I've had no issue with any of the gargantuans - I have several of each and have had zero breakages and zero need to glue. Even the skeletals that I thought may need it, the wings seem to stay in just fine.

If I can ask 2 quick questions. Will Deskari have shading/washes - the box pic seems to lack them? On a larger figure this makes a real difference.
Are the swarm wings transparent? The swarm effect looks quite impressive.

This may be one I pass on. A little TOO unique for my purposes.

Maybe if you were colossal. I could use another colossal sized mini. I just don't have room in my campaign for a gargantuan insect demonlord...thing.

Orcus is just collecting dust on my shelf. Do you really want that for yourself?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

i dont own any prepaints yet but this will probably be the series that i throw some money at.

For those upset about the sizing issues let me educate a few on plastics manufacturing. First off im a process engineer in injection molding with over 15 years in the industry and have produced parts for GM, Ford, Honda, whirlpool, ohio art and many others so i know my plastics. Im not trying to be snarky, im just trying to give you a basic idea how the industry works in the real world.

These plastics parts are getting spat out of a machine by the thousands an hour. in order to guarantee that every part is a perfect fit your talking about paying workers to sort and spec gauge every single part coming out. So instead of paying 1 operator to bulk pack 4-6 different parts running on 4-6 different machines, your talking about putting about 5 people on ONE machine gauging every peace that comes out. Now also consider that SOME if not all figures are made right here in the USA. Average operator pay can range from $10-$15 per hour and will require experienced operators trained as Quality control to achieve that kind of quality, meaning no temps so those workers have health insurance that is paid as well. And this is only about 10% of the picture so you can see how the cost could easily spiral out of control.

Your asking for higher quality standards than automotive parts and even medical equipment get- for a toy, something that just isn't feasible without pushing this figure into 200+ dollar range. Running plastic parts at such an efficient cost/ tight profit margin your naturally going to have some parts that warp, shrink, and even partially fill out- its just the way plastics are. Give Paizo and us hard working Americans still molding in the USA, and not china, a bit of wiggle room. You would be surprised how much engineering, investment, quality, and man hours already goes into those prepainted little toys.

If you get loose fitting peaces and really dont want to glue them together here's a good cheap solution for plastic minis. Purchase a small can of polyurethane gloss/varnish (about 3$). i use minwax as its easy to find. Get the brush on kind not the spray. Give the part to be inserted a coat and let dry. This should effectively shim up the seating and allow for a tight fit. If its still loose you can apply multiple coats. superglue will actually melt the plastic and the fumes can cause white-out around the fitting if too much is used, not to mention fingerprints if you get it stuck to your finger. you can even apply the gloss to the whole figure to protect it or give it a glossy look if you like the look. you can get the polyurethane in varying degrees of glossiness, i prefer a matte finish.

cheers,

Polyurethane is an excellent idea that I hadn't heard or thought of before.

Thanks for the tip, as well as the information, Runeblade.

You have to wait until the next set ships (or thereabouts)before you can buy the previous sets premium figure without buying a whole case.

OK I'm confused here.
So if I read the product description it says I have to buy 400$ worth of figurines I don't want to be able to purchase Deskari???

Am I reading this right?

Grand Lodge

Only for the incentive period, then any remaining minis are opened to general purchase.

If you just want Deskari, ask your local game store if they are ordering a case and would be willing to order it for you.

The Rune Giant is not sold out yet this long after its run.

Yeah, when the next set of minis comes out in May, the remaining Deskaris will go on sale individually in the Paizo store. Different retailers handle sales of the incentive figure differently, so you may well be able to get one somewhere other than Paizo.com before then.

Amazon and e-bay always have plenty available to buy at good prices without buying cases. All the stores around me also sell them.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, I was at work so I didn't have long to talk, but my FLGS just told me that even though they ordered a case and a promo box for me that Wizkids diverted all their promos somewhere else? Is there a shortage of these promo figures? Or is there just delays because of the massive snow delays in delivery?

I received mine in my order and the local FLGS here has one out on display. So if Wizkids diverted it was not all of them.

Mine showed up last week at our GS, picked it up Saturday. I will say it's crazy detailed. All over it, plenty of things to see new each time you look at it or grab it and point to different parts.

But dang! This is one ugly monster. Totally what I'd expect for a demon lord of locusts. Normally I display my big gargantuans. But this guy, I'm not so certain I can look at him up on a shelf like I can the giant or a dragon. So he will live in his box until I need him.

However, I'm still very glad I got him. Ugliness aside.

@Erik Mona: You guys definitely made one detailed and awesomely ugly bad guy here. Great job!
