Chapter 5: "Rasputin Must Die!"
by Brandon Hodge

Worlds at War
The search for the Queen of Witches finally ends when the Dancing Hut travels to Baba Yaga’s homeland of Russia on the planet Earth. The year is 1918, and the First World War rages throughout Europe. The heroes find themselves in the wilds of Siberia, where they must face Russian soldiers armed with twentieth-century technology to infiltrate an ancient monastery and rescue Baba Yaga from her estranged son, Grigori Rasputin. Can the heroes kill the “Mad Monk”—who has already cheated death once before—and free Baba Yaga, or will they fall before the horrors of modern war?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Reign of Winter Adventure Path and includes:

  • “Rasputin Must Die!”, a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 13th-level characters, by Brandon Hodge.
  • A look into the cultural climate of Russia in the midst of revolution, along with rules for her weapons of war, by Adam Daigle and Brandon Hodge.
  • Revelations on Szuriel, the Horseman of War, and her brutal quest for souls, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Spiders versus sentient dolls in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Kevin Andrew Murphy.
  • Four new monsters, by Adam Daigle, Brandon Hodge, and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Player review.

I had been looking forward to this one simply on account of the title. I have to say that the story elements and the setting were top notch. Where we all found it lost points was just how overpowered we found most of the fights. Even for experienced players we found them too difficult for the levels.

Absolutely amazing!

5/5

Everything about this book - from Brandon Hodge's introduction to the back-matter to the inside-cover items - was a joy and a pleasure to read!

This is, by far, my favorite book/module/scenario/AP to have read and GM'd - slightly edging out "The Flesh Collector" PFS scenario, even!

My players were having so much fun with this book that I purposefully dragged out RP and certain sections of it so the book took us longer than any of the others, and they loved every minute of it.

Bravo!

Two words : Must-Buy

5/5

It is simply amazing.
There are several 'look so mad' things, but,
actually all of them are perfectly harmonized without way over the line.
Rasputin must Die! is definetly top of the adventure path line.
Highly recommend!

,One of the best adventures I have ever read

5/5

Brandon Hodge was definitely the best choice for this adventure. He expertly handled historical content and mixed the fantasy with real world elements in a way that enhanced the story. I love this adventure and he it gives me hope for seeing more boundary pushing content from Brandon and from Paizo as a whole.

Amazing adventure

5/5

I admit when this was first announced I was at best sceptical of the entire idea however having read and Dm'd it I can say I have never been happier to be completly wrong about a product before. Ths is an incredible adventure path instalment and I cant recomend it enough.

Ok I need to know three things if it can be answered.

Spoiler:
1. What firearms are stated?
2. A short description describing the oracle abilities along with the final revelation.
3. A short description of the fighter archetype.

Spoiler:

1.) Nagant revolver and rifle; LMG; HMG; 2 artillery
2.) A superbly defined Mystery built around "spiritualism" - final revelation is on the order of "awesome" as the Life Oracle - catch is, if you get wasted, you become a ghost...
3.) Trench Warfare Fighter - armor training is cashiered for taking cover et al, well suited to its name.

Oh god that picture on page 62. Just that one painting of Lirianne, grinning like a maniac as she cuts loose with a Maxim on full auto from the back of a tachanka (with Alain driving, but who cares about him?), just that painting is worth the price of the whole book. :D

Okay I can answer you on the Occult mystery

Occult:

basically it is a lot of powers that help with or utilize spirits in some way or help with seances. All the bonus spells are either things that you could use in a seance to help spook the people, travel the spirit realm, or divine the future. You get some overlaps like brain drain but you also get stuff like soul shroud that lets you rebound damage back at targets but all in all it's mostly built around that core concept. The capstone gives you immunity to death effects, exhaustion, fatigue, nausea effects,
negative levels, and sickened effects as well as true see and astral projection 1/day as spell-likes. Finally if you die you are reborn as a ghost.

I usually have to wait until the end of the week to get my volume, but that wasn't the case. I got it today and I've read through most of it.

I've been anticipating this issue like a giddy schoolgirl since the day I heard about it and I have to say I dreaded the prospect that it wouldn't live up to it's monumental hype. I was similarly excited about the Carrion Crown AP and found it to be a big letdown with an utterly uninspiring final villain.

That said, this issue didn't just meet my expectations, it completely blew me away with how good it is. Brandon Hodge has gone out of his way to write a story that does justice to the Mad Monk's legend and incorporates so many early 20th century references and details that it is just insane. He has managed to pack tons of what has been discussed in this thread into the volume while simultaneously managing to avoid making it feel padded or otherwise existing only to function as fan service.
This could easily have turned into a very stale grind of fighting off endless waves of mustard gas scented Russian soldiers, or a complete clusterf*** of mismatched monsters tossed in for the sake diversity. But Mr. Hodge has been very careful to selectively pick only a very narrow band of monstrous opponents that fit into and accent the Russian mysticism of this issue.

The rest of the issue is also very well written, I particularly liked the article on the Horseman of War. A very apt choice considering the backdrop of the issue.

I truly pity the empty soulless husks that criticized the concept from the first moment it appeared and refused to give it a chance. If you can't appreciate the awesomeness of what this issue is then you have truly hardened your heart and soul to pure joy.

I didn't mean for this post to end up sounding like a review, but there you have it. This is one of the absolute best adventure path issues ever written, and certainly my new favorite.

So question on the prices of the firearms. Are their prices the 10% of base value(since it's guns everywhere) or is it just the normal price before to take 10% of it?

Folks, I'm blown away by the response and the enthusiasm for this chapter so far. I normally only get to watch this anticipation from afar when it is heaped on Chapter 1s for APs (as I'm more of a late-chapter/finale guy), but after putting everything I had into this one, I'm super-stoked to see the swelling excitement and kind words. Thank you. I hope it turns out for your home groups as fun and creepy as I intended. I think the stars just really aligned for all involved on this one!

This is some damn good stuff.

As for the Mad Monk - Rasputin's bad-ass enough to be the final boss of an AP. And he's showing up in the 5th chapter. PCs that take him lightly are in for a world of hurt.

Sir you might have just very well created the biggest problem with my gaming group since.

1.) Once I show the history buffs and veterans in my group what coming they WILL be wanting to play this NOW

and

2.) They will not want to wait to get here. Hell I'm having a hard time comprehending how I can wait to get to this book.

In short, well done sir.

P.S. It also helps throwing daemons into the equation. One of my most favorite evil outsiders and here they are in what might be my favorite ap book thus far. Feel impressed you just might have beat paizo's birthday gift to me 2 years ago of Wake of the Watcher.

Most excellent. I plan on using the groundwork for this adventure to run one of my own at some point, only taking place in a more fictional Europe in WWI with the PCs travelling in a magic wardrobe and fighting alongside British troops and inspiring a soldier they'll befriend along the way with their tales of wonder and excitement.

A soldier whose name is Second Lieutenant Clive Staples Lewis.
