This looks awesome! I have been thinking for years that cardboard pawns should be available with adventure modules and/or sold separately. Now I get this and the Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection back-to-back.
Paizo: I would absolutely buy pawn sets for my adventure paths, especially if they included all the NPCs listed in the city/town sections. I'd also love generic non-adventury NCP pawns for locations like those depicted on the flip-maps, ie. tavern, inn, cathedral, opera house, etc.

Do you perchance know about the Pathfinder Paper Minis, Jim in OK?

I've seen the paper minis. They are ok, but I don't really like the art because it's really cartoony. I have a few sets, but I would prefer a pre-printed heavy cardstock product. I wouldn't mind PDFs with art more inline with standard Pathfinder products.
I think sets of pawns designed to depict NPCs and special monsters from the Adventure Paths would cross over nicely in sales. Sets of generic setting-based NPC pawns would cross over nicely with the flip maps. For instance: Tavern (bar tender, servers, tavern patrons without weapons), theater (opera singers, stage hands, opera goers in finery), Ship (generic crew, naval officers, pirates, merchants), Cathedral (different ranking "priests" from different religions).

I suppose it is worth saying that I have four of the Paper Minis for Rise of the Runelords. I am currently running a campaign based on Runelords. I like props, so I am pretty stoked about the Anniversary Edition, Pawns, and Face Cards coming out for it. My group is moving pretty slowly, so even though it won't be out until summer, I'll still get plenty of use out of it.

I was literally looking for something like this just last week, since I'm looking to step up from binder-clipped printed coverstock pawns. The clarity of design is much appreciated, and the round bases will work well with the Alea Tools markers my group's started to love.
I'm a bit confused about which subscribers have access to the free PDF with purchase, since it's outside of the subscription model. Is it only these Pathfinder RPG subscribers? Or people with active subscriptions in general?
I'm guessing the former, but it never hurts to ask.

Per the product description, to get the free PDF, you need to:
- Have an active Pathfinder RPG subscription, which must be active at the time the Bestiary Box ships (current estimations are for May 2012)
- Preorder the Bestiary Box
Hope that clears things up!

I just want to know how soon before we start seeing more support for the pawn concept? Perhaps a page of pawns with the bestiary from an AP attached to the back of an AP book for subscribers, or even a twice a year pawn pack for sale to support that years APs. A goblin or kobold warpack of pawns with several pages of differing artwork to flesh out a crew, random undead for that shuffling mob or orcs galore for the horde...we the people want pawns....and you, as a company have always done an amazing job of listening, and answering. So, when do we see the pawns truly take off?

PaladinRS |
My guess is: after the first 2-3 pawn sets hit the market and Pazio sees if sales warrant it.
Well. Sadly, (and no, it is not a flame) Paizo is getting onto the scene a bit late. The current Warhammer Fantasy RPG supplements are releasing really high end card board pawns, and are due out with their own bestiary box which will have 'rub on' style transfers of weapons and accessories. Which is an idea I put out on THESE forums some time ago. I know more than a few GMs I have mentored have adopted the Warhammer RPG Pawns for their own games.
I feel almost honor bound to support this product, since I was one of the more vocal people that asked for it. But I do have some concerns:
1) Will these be dry erase friendly?
2) Will we see pawn support for the existing and future Adventure Paths?
3) I read 'size appropriate bases' in the product description, but want clarification. Does this mean they will be to scale with the Paizo Flip Mats and Map Packs?
4) Will a similar product be offered for Player Characters?
Thanks.

1. It's not part of the design spec, but we haven't actually tried it.
2. Are you aware of this?
3. Yes, the pawns will have the same base size as standard minis (and thus our GameMastery products): 1" diameter=Medium, 2" diameter=Large, etc.
4. I don't think you'll see anything targeted *specifically* at PCs, as good PC minis also work great as NPC minis... but I'll note that our Beginner Box includes male and female pawns for every race/class combo in the BB rules, and we understand the value of having that kind of selection for the range as a whole.

PaladinRS |
1. I really, really wish it had been not just part of the design spec, but one which was actively considered in the design of the pawns. But its fine. Its a small gripe.
2. No. I was not. And damn you for making me like you guys again. I can't tell you what a spanktastic idea I think that is. I am sure not everyone will agree with me, but as a GM, I LOVE when I am prepping an adventure having a physical manifestation of what I am going to throw at the PCs handy. I don't know why. It just helps.
3. Good choice on the scale.
4. I suggest looking into the feasibility of 'custom' PC pawns using 'dry transfer' style art (the old rub-on style decal you used with a pencil. The eighties babies won't get it until they see it, but some of you who predate the internet know what I am talking about). The tech for this is DECADES old and I think its a great alternative to painting miniatures.
My vision is something like this. You get a pawn of a bald humanoid (say an elf). And from a dry transfer sheet, you put a hairstyle on him, an armor set and a weapon. If you are feeling ambitious, include a dry transfer sheet of letters so the name can go at the top. Time investment in making this 'custom pawn' a player can get emotionally invested in: probably fifteen minutes tops. But the value they place on it? Probably alot. Just some food for thought.

Is there any chance that both this set, the Rise of the Runelords set and any future sets could be listed under "Pathfinder® / Pathfinder Miniatures" like the Reaper, WizKids and Pathfinder Paper Minis? That way there is one place to find these. I would never have found either of these except they were mentioned in some forum posts.

Right so even though I have a Pathfinder Compaion subscription ... it wont meet the requirement. :(

You are correct.. but the simplest way to GET the PDF for free is to sign up for a Pathfinder RPG subscription in the beginning of May and then once the box ships, cancel the subscription. You only NEED to have the subscription at the TIME of shipping for this product to get the PDF for free.. so need to be sad sir. Paizo is ok with this and know it happens too.
So while you are subscribed to the Pathfinder Companion line you can be subscribed to this one to and still get what you want. Simple, simple :)

Joana |

Dont you have to have received at least one shipment before you get subscriber discounts/benefits?
For the Pathfinder Advantage discount, anyway, it doesn't apply until your first AP has shipped. Because there are fewer releases in the RPG line, I'm not sure how that works. My guess is that you'd have to start your subscription with Bestiary 3 to get the free PDF, as the next RPG product doesn't ship until June, but I'd double-check with a Paizo staffer to be sure. E-mail Customer Service and ask.

I hope there's an Invisible Stalker pawn, using the artwork from 2E MM.
try just putting this on a pawn base:
http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=220041
:P
Anyway, question: will the PDF be purchaseable even without having anysubscription? If say I decided I want the option of using the art to try and create my own little army of goblins or whatnot, having the PDF could be really handy.

I would be shocked if you can't buy the PDF seperately, it'd be crazy not to sell it on it's own.

... I didn't realize this wasn't part of the subscription until I read the Skull and Shackles box.
Are there any more token boxes that I've missed?
The only one pawn product already released is the Beginner Box. Bestiary Box, Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection, and Skull & Shackles Pawn Collection have been announced but not yet released.

They're not listed under Minis because they're listed under Tokens.

That will probably depend on how well the Bestiary Box does.
That sounds strangely familiar. Like you told me that before. Oh yea..it was with the first set of the plastic mins. And we all have seen how that worked out.
I still say it must be done along with a NPC/PC pack.
I think if Paizo can get behind this idea, and put out good support for their Adventure Paths with these tokens, it will really do well for them.
35 bucks for 300 tokens isn't bad.
PaladinRS |
Just thought I would put a little blurb up as well for the people who are interested:
As far as numbering/marking your creatures who tend to be more numerous (say, a goblin horde), you MAY want to look at picking up some 'rub-on' style font sheets. These are available at any stationary store, come in a variety of font styles and sizes and are very easy to use. They also look VERY professional. I have been using them for other 'pawn/pog' substitutes to good effect while I have waited for a Paizo alternative.

Hi, I don't know if this has been discussed already, however the product description goes like this:
"...Each cardstock pawn slots into a size-appropriate plastic base..."
Now, it's not clear if the bases are included in the box or not, hence my questions:
1) apart from the tokens, will the box contain also bases?
2) if yes, will the bases be differentiated according to the scale (small, medium, large, huge, etc.) of the monster?
3) how many bases will be included in the box?
And, not flaming, just a suggestion, a more clear list in the description of exactly what's in the box would be much appreciated, i.e.
"The box contains:
- 300 tokens (250 unique creatures, 5 ogres, 5 goblins...)
- 25 bases (14 medium sized, 4 large sized, 2 huge sized, 5 small sized...)
- a 4 pages manual with instructions on how to assemble and preserve your tokens."
Just an idea :-)

DjinnJah |

I have this pre-ordered and I am quite excited about it, however this may seem silly but I am concerned about organisation.
I have the beginners box and there aren't that many minis but sometimes it can take a long time to find the mini I need at any given time.
Is there any system for organisation the minis in the box? Or suggestions from folk as to how to organise them myself?

When this product was announced, we didn't have firm answers to any of that. Shortly after we send a product to the printer, we usually update the website descriptions and images to match the final cover and the sell text on the finished product, and I'm pretty sure that update will have the details you seek.
I will answer these, though:

1. Yes.
2. There are 1" bases for both Small and Medium tokens, 2" bases for Large, and 3" bases for Huge. (There's nothing larger than Huge or smaller than Small in the set.)3. I don't know offhand.

OK, I can see where someone from a generation from the 70's might dig this, I remember this being the rage in the day....but I don't miss it, at all. If this idea were to be adopted I can only hope there will still be enough on the pawns that I can simply put my copies of the transfer sheets in the mail and send them to those who want them, as I won't ever be using them. I paint miniatures, I have for most of my life. I like the pawns because they already look like the artwork I'm trying to represent, if I want something custom on the table, I'll paint it. Not dogging the idea, just hoping if it ends up an actual concept on the table that those of us who see no usage for these are remembered.

The numbers, by the way, are printed in colored ovals at the lower right of each token; in cases where there are multiple tokens for the same monster, the oval color will vary so that you can tell them apart. (For example, there are four goblin warriors: one has the number in a purple oval, one has it in an orange oval, one has it in a blue oval, and one has it in a green oval.)

I was born in the 80s and I seem to remember a sheet of letters that you transferred by rubbing.

I would like to see NPC and PC token box next and I would suggest a couple of different colours for the token stands. Black for monsters
Green for Players, Blue for NPC/Allies and Red for NPC/Enemies.
I would also like to see condition effects that can either clip on to the top of the token or slip over the token.
I would also like to see the tokens numbered in some way or something that can be added to the token
I can easily see my self buying multiple boxes of these as long as there are veriety of them and no duplicates. Duplicates are OK for the monsters but not for the NPC/PC.
By suppling everything in token format then PAZIO can supply a suitable carry or storage case.
Again briliant idea, cant wait for the Bestiary box.

I like the idea but it is really LAME.
Release a supplement really similar to the MONSTER COMPENDIUMS from 2nd edition that went in the binders.
All that needs to be on those pages are the pictures of the monster.
No stat blocks or anything.
I am tired of using my Bestiaries and covering up the stat blocks and name to reveal to my players what they are dealing with...
Pictures of monsters is what I desire.
I do not use technology at my table therefore hardcopies are preferred.
Is anything like this in the pipeline...?

There have been requests for something like this in the gamemastery cards product line, but it's always had a somewhat cool reception.
.My preference is for a set of cards with a picture on the front and three increasing DC knowledge checks on the back summarising what PCs might know about a monster.
With regard to the pawns - I'd really like a product similar to the various transparent card-holders one can get for a three ring binder. With pockets for medium, large and huge pawns. One of the biggest problems I can foresee with these pawns is how to store them in an easily accessible way.
