Great Starter to Pathfinder

5/5

I was highly impressed with the Beginner Box. I know the video said it was a hefty filled box, but wow, it was like a brick! The books were extremely helpful for a beginner and those that are picking up Pathfinder for the first time. I was highly impressed with the pawns. I was not expecting them to be so thick and sturdy. The simple to follow A, B, C, D, etc. was helpful. It was simple, but helpful. It even included a set of dice! The one thing I wished it would have included is 1-2 Medium size bases.
Overall, great product!

The Best GMing Tool I have Found

5/5

This is the most helpful GMing tool I have ever found. The introductory adventure got me (20 y.o. college student) and my party (my parents and younger brothers)very excited to play Pathfinder. The books were excellently designed, with the 12 y.o. being able to create a character in 20 minutes, and after the intro adventure it left me with plenty of tools and made me very excited to create my own adventures!
After 4 sessions with the beginner box I ordered the CRB and Bestiary, and with as attached as the players got to Sandpoint I went ahead and got the Inner Sea World Guide so we could play more in Golarion!
More Pathfinder products (and modern RPG books in general) should have the reading voice the books in this box did. These are the closest to Gary Gygax's 1e AD&D DMG in terms of teaching players how things work in an RPG.

A long-needed intro

5/5

For some reason, I often have trouble wrapping my head around new rule sets to previous games. And despite the "streamlining" that went into Pathfinder, its reliance on miniatures makes it much more complex than other (older) RPG's. This kit does an excellent job of introducing the game mechanics and the default setting, Golarion.

Great start!

5/5

Bought this for my three teenagers to tide them over until I get home from Afghanistan. They took to it right away and sent me enough emails that I know what an excellent product this is! If you're new to Pathfinder, or want a way to introduce Pathfinder to new gamers, this is the product to use.

Great kickstart for young players

4/5

I've been wanting to introduce my 3 nephews (ages 9, 11, and 12) to an RPG for a while. Being partial to Pathfinder, the PRPG:BB was just the tool. Not having GMed any RPG for many, many years, the stripped down ruleset was a boon for *me* as well as the kids.

We played over the course of a weekend family vacation. They absolutely loved it, Saturday night we went through the step-by-step character creation, Sunday we played through the included adventure. I confess that the included adventure was a bit ridiculous, what with the black dragon at first level, but the kids loved it (and there was a TPK at the hands of the goblins so they never saw the Dragon -- despite this they were eager to roll up new characters :-)

My only criticism is that it's not really a stand-alone product once you've completed the included adventure and the few available downloads. The lack of race/class options limits its long-term appeal too. Sure, you can play published Pathfinder modules by converting them, but why bother?

Conclusion: As a teaching tool for first timers and a gateway product to the full PF ruleset, the BB is great.

P.S. My nephews all have copies of the Core rulebook headed their way :-)

I dug up the old thread discussing this product with ~200 posts and did a search for any mention of the D&D Adventure Game. (Released by WOTC 2000 and targeted toward people new to RPGs in general.)

I know that Paizo won't release more information than they already have, but I just wanted to say that I like the ease by which people were introduced to the system. It involved some simplification of the rules (and it only had pregens, and only of the 4 core classes), but it was a good foundation for transitioning to the full 3rd Edition ruleset. For people completely new to RPGs, it held your hand through the GMing process, too.

It would be cool to see that kind of approach for this product, but also with the rules for creating your own characters.

Call me the curmudgeonly devil's advocate, but why is this in the subscription, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the subscription members are not the target demo for a beginner set, or do you have a lot of non-gamer subscribers?

I'm probably going to cancel my sub, not because this isn't a cool product, or isn't a great moment for paizo, but... well I really don't need it (not withstanding the cool art.)

Liberty's Edge

I bought my first Dungeons and Dragons (2nd Edition) boxed set after I bought the player's handbook. I just needed ideas to springboard a free-form campaign, and the beginner levels were perfect for it. When we were done with the adventures in the box, I had to think hard on coming up with a different one. Fun times.

Im 99% positive I will never use it but I will be buying this. Looking forward to it.

Regarding the subscription / import tax topic - isn't there the simple avenue of canceling the RPG Subscription (or putting in on hold) for this one and then restarting it after the Beginner's Box?

Ok, I guess that this would create much work for paizo's customer service but as far as I understand how subscriptions work, it is possible?

I will get this one - I just don't know which way (subscription, local store or amazon germany).

Cleverly they've made it so you do have bug their customer service department to unsubscribe, its not a big deal, I was just putting it on record why I was going to do this, and curious if I wasn't going to be the only one.

I'll wait and see what the s/h to Poland will be like, if it's some silly amount I'll just grab it off Amazon.uk. No biggie.

Yes - and I really don't want to be harsh/mean/whatever - but that is their workload then, not mine/ours :-)

But I think they will cope with it - and we, the "european corner customers", will be happy customers. No problem as far as I am concerned.

80 "Pawns"? What exactly are pawns and will this be something available outside of the box?

Liberty's Edge

I know a bunch of friends and relatives for whom I am going to buy this.

I am extremely pleased that Paizo has produced this. I've been playing Pathfinder with my sons (9 and 6) and their friends. They have nearly trashed my core rulebook, but really the reading level is just too high. I bought the WoTC 3.5 'basic' game, and the new 4.0 boxed set, and they are both just works of misery, not at all the great kinds of products that we are all reminiscing about from our childhoods. Thanks Paizo! If you need a test player, let me know, as I and my group of pre-teens are 'in'!

Are they anything like prawn's? :D

They sound like cut out tokens that fit on a base to be standup tokens.

That would be Wes Schneider and however many interns they can catch. Little suckers breed like rabbits so it also helps to clean up the editorial pit.

Right now, it has a scheduled release date of October. You should be able to start a Pathfinder RPG subscription with this item as your starting subscription item in late August.

Will there be a PDF inclusive of the BB with the sub?

That is an interesting question, because in the past Paizo has refused to offer up digital version of flip maps, and would likely have the same policy about "Pawns" as they do cards (no digital version), so it would be interesting to see if they make an exception for this product.

Actually, Wes doesn't (fortunately!) breed like a rabbit, but otherwise you're spot on with that assessment! ;)

Vic hinted that there most likly will be a PDF of some sort, but not of what it would include. I'm guessing the rulebok/scenario would be in a PDF, and the map/pawns would not.

I can see that. If they don't offer up the Pawns as their own separate package to sell, I hope they at least include those in the PDF so we have some way to get more, or make replacements.

Maps we can buy separately, most of their cards are still in print, so replacements can be bought, but the pawns cannot, unless they do offer them up as a separate product, or at least include them in the PDF. Thats my concern.

Hmmm....pawns?

Wow ... I just saw a little news snippet on what the "pawns" are - what an awful word to use for something so ... AWESOME. I'm going to get this box just for those!

Minis are not pawns, pawns are not minis. The prepainted plastic minis mentioned in that press release are not part of the Beginner Box, they're a separate product.

Yeah I figured that. Though you guys might want to change the press release to be a bit more clear. I can see how from reading it people might think they are coming in the boxed set.

Well, certain libraries in the world attempt to buy one of everything, just for research's sake.

Erik has clarified in a related topic, I'll repost it here:

To clear up a couple of points, the announcement covers a single set of non-random preprinted plastic minis that will be sold as a separate item from the Beginner Box. The minis are designed to be used for the Beginner Box, but are not included in the Beginner Box itself.

I certainly hope that the set is a big success and we do more products with WizKids, but for now we are talking about a single set of non-random minis. I have seen the preliminary sculpts and paint guides and I am blown away by the quality. I think people are going to be very impressed with the quality of these miniatures, and I will be doing everything in my power to ensure that the high standards of the material I have seen so far carries through to the final product.

WizKids has been absolutely great to work with so far and I am confident that the final product will be very impressive.

Yeah I knew, I read it. I was just saying you guys might want to tweak the press release to make it more clear is what I meant. :)

Oh Yeah!!!!!

I was afraid when Wizards dropped the ball with cancelling D&D miniatures that no-one else would pick it up. But once again Paizo picks an awesome product out of a muddy mess, dusts it off and makes it look like a million dollars.

WOOOO ........and might I add HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I had heard about the minis/beginner box, and was going to post that now I'm going to buy it. But it doesn't come with them... so I'm not.

But I am going to buy the separate minis! So... win/win?

Galnörag wrote:

I'm probably going to cancel my sub...

I will probably need to pull the carefully-timed stunt of canceling my subscription just before the Beginner's Box is released and reactivating it afterward. $35 for a product nearly 100% redundant with rules sets I already have, plus "pawns" and a flip-mat? Pass.

I think it's great that there will be a Beginner's Box, but agree with Galnörag that I don't consider myself the target audience for it and question the rationale of an automatic sale.

By an interesting yet meaningless coincidence, my username on another messageboard is Advocatus Diaboli.

If it has the sharp edged pastel colored dice that you have crayon the numbers I'm sold. I suspect it will be a worthy successor to the old red box. Looking forward to this as an entry point for my 12 year old nephew. :)

Just wanted to clarify something ... this isn't going to impact the relationship with Reaper in any way is it?* As in, hopefully this isn't the first steps in a migration from one manufacturer to another?

I really hope not, cause I really like the Reaper minis. Though I'll buy these ones too so my kids have some minis they can be a bit more rough with.

* Yes, yes, I realize you can't divulge internal business developments like that, but just wanted to get the thought out.

This product is not only good for younger gamers wanting to enter the hobby, but adults too - I have a bunch of people I'm getting interested in the PF, some of whom would like more of their own grasp of the rules but are intimidated by the Core Rulebook - they don't know where to begin.

The Core Rulebook by necessity is organized like a reference book, but if the Beginner Box has manuals that "ramp up" people who are new to RPGs that would be awesomesauce. This now gives me something to show them.

I'm excited for what this product means for the growth of the hobby!

Relax! Our relationship with Reaper is just fine! We love them and they love us. We love the minis that they put out for Pathfinder. We just sent Sean Reynolds down to Reapercon last weekend and they are sending folks up to PaizoCon in a few weeks.

We just felt that there was a need for a box of prepainted plastic miniatures to go along with the Beginner Box at the end of the year. WizKids approached us and has the ability to get this done very quickly, MUCH more quickly than Paizo or anybody else could I wager. So we jumped at the chance. Where this goes from here, nobody knows. But we would NEVER replace metal minis with prepainted plastic ones. Best case scenario is that we are able to provide BOTH avenues for people to get the minis that they want. But for right now, this is a one-shot thing with WizKids and we have lots of ongoing plans with Reaper.

There, feel better? :)

Personally, I hope that both product lines sell well and more WizKids prepainted plastic minis will be produced.

My wife likes to paint the metal Reaper stuff - but I hate bugging her to paint stuff I want as a GM, and I suck at paintjobs.

Prepaints work much better for my needs, and while I have a deep collection of D&D minis, there's some Pathfinder stuff that just doesn't have an analog in those sets - ugothols and sinspawn spring to mind. So, here's hoping there's more plastic crack in our future than just the Beginner's Box-related set!
