A Major Contribution to the Game

5/5

The third bestiary of monsters for Pathfinder is chock-full of cool stuff. A few major themes for the book can be extracted: creatures from myth and literature (like sasquatches and valkyries), creatures with an Asian theme perfect for adventuring in Tian-Xia (such as kami and jiang-shi vampires), and the just plain really weird (like yithians and zoogs). As always with reviews of books like this, there's no way I can go through the hundreds of monsters individually, but I can say the writing and artwork is top-notch. Some particular things to note:

* The book has five new playable races: catfolk, ratfolk, suli, vanara, and vishkanya. There's always a demand for anthromorphic races like catfolk, and ratfolk later become prominent (under the name ysoki) in Starfinder. Suli don't do much for me and vishkanya are a race I've never seen played. But I do have to shout out to the monkey-like vanara, since a vanaran PC features prominently in my Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign!

* Several of the attempts from Misfit Monsters Redeemed to make goofy old monsters cool again are reprinted here, such as adherers and wolves-in-sheep's-clothing.

* Man, vulnudaemons are creepy.

* Love the artwork for animal lords--very Black Panther.

*The book introduces several new categories (sub-types) of monster: asuras (very cool concept I've never seen used), behemoths (creatures of divine vengeance on entire nations or worlds; a neat story idea), clockworks (a classic), demodands (titanspawn who hate the gods), divs (corrupted genies who strive for the ruin of all things made by mortals), imperial dragons (wingless, serpent-like dragons of Asian legend), kami (fixed-location nature spirits), kytons (creepy devils from the Plane of Shadows!), leshy (plant-like sentients), linnorms (cruel wingless dragons with a death curse), oni (evil spirits given form--the opposite of kami), rakshasa (drawn from Indian myth), sphinxes (with an interesting write-up), and thriaes (female bee-like seers). There's a real contribution to the richness of the game here, as all of these categories can then serve as the basis for rules-coherent variants introduced in later books.

All in all, Bestiary 3 is an excellent book and a smart purchase for a GM.

Another great addition to the Bestiary products

5/5

Reading through Bestiary 1 and 2, I was hoping that there will be even more eastern themed monsters. This Bestiary delivers just what I wanted! A must buy! Also, Flumph!!!

Best of the Bestiary

5/5

Bestiary 3 review is up on my blog.

This is probably my favorite of the Bestiaries so far, the content covers many iconic monsters from editions past, and stuff from the Adventure Paths. With great Asian flair for the Tian Xia world guide that is coming up, as well as many incredible monsters that have never graced the pages of a monster guide but are very welcome.

A great addition!

5/5

Although I'm generally opposed to the concept of core book "sequels," the content in 'Bestiary 3' is top notch. Whereas it took me some time to realize the usefulness of the monsters presented in 'Bestiary 2' (extraplanar/dimensional encounters rarely play a role in my campaigns), I immediately recognized many of the creatures in 'Bestiary 3' as either "iconic" or interesting variations on an established monster class.

As is to be expected, this book is well laid out and the illustrations are (mostly) top notch - Paizo rarely disappoints here! The Pathfinder Campaign Setting is still missing a few iconic monsters (mostly due to WotC's draconic licensing practices), but this volume (and the two which preceded it) gives GMs a huge variety of creatures to populate their encounters.

If I could make any suggestions for future 'Bestiary' volumes, the first would be to expand upon the lore provided - I realize it would likely halve the number of creatures included per book, but a two page spread (even for "simple" creatures like oozes) might help a GM find a place for a given creature within his campaign setting. Also, better illustrating a creature's size (perhaps even graphically) would be useful - general size classifications only go so far, and being able to see a silhouette of a given entry next to a human-sized creature would give both GMs and players a clear understanding of exactly how big a monster is (this was employed beautifully in an old FASA publication for Shadowrun: 'Paranormal Animals of North America' by Nigel Findley). Again, these are just suggestions on ways to improve an otherwise outstanding collection of Bestiaries. Keep up the good work!

Dodging the law of sequels

5/5

An excellent monster book, strong mythological presence (from various cultures). Probably even better than Bestiary 2. And it has the flumph! (this is a good thing, well its worth a page) If you're looking for a monster book for some critters outside of the real core you would well to pick this up.

Gotta respect the fez. Fezes are cool.

So what monsters from the bonus bestiary got new art?

What classes are the playable races?

Normal Kangaroo? Are you serious??!! :p

Why not use the prehistoric 3 meters high kangaroo called Procoptodon? That is actually a kangaroo I would fear as it towers over any human.

Speaking about dinosaurs (and the likes) and prehistoric mammals, for the next bestiary these would be welcome:

Gorgonid / Tanystropheus / Daeodon the killer boar-thing / Beardog or Amphicyon / Stygimoloch / Arthropleura / Quetzalcoatlus / Basilosaurus

Cool!

Actually i'm suprised Paizo didn't use the Gorgonopsid yet, it was made famous by the Primeval series!

Daeodon is in the first Bestiary (page 36, under dire boar... I lost the fight to replace "dire animals" with real-world megafauna names, so the next best thing was to include those names WITH the dire version)

Quetzalcoatlus is in Pathfinder #37.

And as mentioned above, Basilosaurus is in Bestiary 3.

The others are cool possibilities; I'm gonna make sure more megafauna and dinosaurs and their ilk show up in bestiaries and now and then in other products, but I can't do all of them all at one. It's sometimes weirdly/annoyingly difficult to convince some people that such creatures deserve to be statted up as monsters...

Well if they don't want them as monsters just give them some monstrous properties like Scutosaurus being able to earth-glide and Gorgonopsid being some vampire-pet :P

especially when they are quite useful as mounts for Monsters especially giants and/or to add a certain flavor to the world

I for example use Dire wolly Rhinos (just the advanced and Giant template added as a Standin for the Elasmotherium) as Stanard mounts for Ogres, oger magi, Ettins, Frost giants and minotaurs for those who are in my campain nobles /and or knights
(rhino means in this world these beasts our rhino they refer as Dwarf rhinos)

My fingers been hovering over the add to cart button for weeks now.

Golem jokes aside. Can someone skip the foreplay and post the full list already. Or link it. Don't want to waste time homebrewing any monsters for my own campaign, only to find Paizo's already done a much better job. (No Bestiary 2, I'm not still mad at you...)

Just answer me this at least, o fortunate few, what are the dinosaurs in the book? Do we get a Spinosaurus?

A full list would be nice but I have a feeling by the time it is posted I might already have this book.

Eric Braddock's the artist. If I've understood correctly(please correct me if I'm wrong guys), F. Wesley Schneider came up with the concept and Adam Daigle did development for it.

Nephilim are apparently frequently persecuted by humans. Man, humans sure picked one hell of a race to try and bully, especially with that Mortal Challenge going on.

The old Nixie art is back, but it's a solid piece. I really do like that the unusual features for many of these fey races have been played up rather than just making them look like humans with some seaweed or leaves thrown on.

Norns as fey. Like. That thread-snipping ability certainly makes them a being adventurers should respect. Great candidate for use in a First World/fey-oriented game as an important but neutral NPC or setpiece, like Planescape's Lady of Pain.

Nuckelavee, another fey. I hope those that wrote off fey as having no range beyond "fairies and sunflowers" have gotten the memo by now. This thing would look at home in a medieval Silent Hill.

Nue are every nightmare about tiger attacks in India dialed up to eleven. Think "The Ghost and the Darkness" if the lions were also Dracula. Genuinely unsettling face too.

Lots of oni. I thought making the Ogre Mage an Oni was a good move back in the first Bestiary, and it certainly helped explain why it was so different from the usual Ogre norm. Cool origins explaining how they're disembodied spirits that become a specific type of oni depending on the kind of creature they possess. They also seem to be basically the thugs of the cosmos, which is pretty refreshing in itself. They're petty bandits. Supernaturally powerful, but still petty bandits and thugs.

Most of the oni featured here are the Yai, oni born from giants, all sharing similar visual cues. There's also the Kuwa, oni in human flesh with really crazy "I DO COCAINE!" eyes. There's also a spirit oni option that could make for good servants for evil spellcasters and provides that oni-mask imagery.

Pale Stranger has an awesome design. People can harp about a gunslinger's place in a fantasy setting all they want, but this is cool and I want it in my fantasy. Deadlands fans might get a kick out of it too. :) Real High Plains Drifter potential here too with the rare variant Strangers. A really nice addition to the Revenant theme, though they work quite differently and become a lot less potentially sympathetic once their job is done.

Next page has Parasite, Rot Gru...NO NO NO. Skip. Next is Parasite, Giant Rot G...NO I've heard the stories, NO. And then there's Ezren with a big one on him and it's Lumpy the Cook in Peter Jackson's King Kong all over again and NO. Do not want to deal with maggots and maggot-related body horror right now.

Next page is Penanggalen: lady's head with bloody organs and innards trailing underneath. This honestly bothers me less than the previous page. It's a template, and is presented as both an alternate vampire and a lich, particularly fitting for witches, which is really interesting. Like the Manananggal, they have an alternate form which hides their undead nature completely during daylight, and a horrific means of shedding that disguise when their work hours are over. Also, what they spawn is a nasty surprise all on its own. Now that is going to be a horrifying experience for some parties.

Peri - I did a double take when I first saw this page. I was wondering if Paizo had Luis Royo doing art for them for a moment, and I don't mean that as a knock on the actual artist, Maichol Quinto. Very cool, and the flaming peacock wings really make me want to use these as Sarenrae-related beings. Funny enough, looking at their flavor reveals that they're all about trying to earn redemption, considering they're possibly the descendants of fallen angels. Using these for sure now.

Phantom Fungus is all like D

Plasma Ooze is scary. The magnetic pulse concept added to an ooze is frightening all on its own, but then its shooting plasma at multiple targets too. Certain immunities will steal its thunder of course, but if one is looking for an alien threat to depopulate an area...

Popobala is a powerful "sower of discontent" type that also has a serious game in a straight up fight. Also looks really familiar. Suddenly remembering a lot of videogame demons from the NES days sporting that single-eye look.

Pukwudgies are going to catch a lot of players off guard. Players are going to see them and think they're playing by fey rules. Then their poison takes effect on some poor NPC villagers... The hints are there in the art but it's still a bit of a curve ball. And there's those tiny skulls again!

The Rakshasas have long gotten a flavor boost from Pathfinder, and they get more here. Love this idea of a perverted reincarnation cycle. Their caste system, both for themselves and how they see others properly fitting into it, is also explained here.

It should also be noted that here and elsewhere Pathfinder has been really good about being consistant with the backwards hands. It doesn't sound like much, but it's an effective, unsettling visual cue.

It should also be noted that for a bunch of beings that EAT PEOPLE, they're all really well dressed. Seriously, Dandasuka's pimpin'.

Dandasukas are the comical-at-first-glance minor minion types. They stop being overly funny either when they start taking bites out of their victims or when you notice that large groups of them are called "murders".

Maharajas are still as scary as they were when they first debuted, and are portrayed as perfectly willing to abuse their "respawn system" in a fight.

The art for the Marai really induces a "HOLY CRAP" reaction. GM's will probably want to stockpile some dice color-code by energy types if they're planning on using more than one of these at a time. Seriously, they're the anthropomorphic personifications of beam spam. They're not certainly lethal if you bust them out, but they'll definitely get a reaction once they show how large and varied an barrage they can produce.

Raktavarda are still great spy creatures, and an interesting familiar option as well.

Tatakas look to be great for heading up rakshasa cults. They really do look like blasphemous corruptions of something that should be divine. Probably my favorite of the new rakshasas, and it actually leaves me hoping we get a good, divine blue-skinned Hindu-themed semi-contortionist, martial artist-themed outsider as well. Multiple arms optional? Fancy headgear absolutely required.

Seriously, between all the Rakshasas and Asuras, and the possible celestials that can be mined from India....Vudra/Jalmeray AP. WANT.

Also, between the new Rakshasas and Cult of the Ebon Destroyers, you guys should probably consider making Carolina Eade your default go-to artist for anything Vudra. :)

Work's up again, hope to actually finish this soon.

Sold. no scratch that, SUPER SOLD! I have been wanting that devil for the longest time, it always felt so wrong that the devils the supposed master tempters didn't have their own succubus stated up to path standard. I can't recall exactly how the old one worked to be certain if its different, but what I recall offhand about the new version is that they can whip out a contract even in the middle of combat(seriously, it's measured in rounds, so this could lead to situations where the odds are horribly against the PCs, party members dying all around, and one guy is presented with a horrible choice). Standard contract offers either three easily perverted wishes or a devil servant bound for rest of the signer's life. IIRC, breaking the contract works the same way.

Yeah, these guys are really good at putting hte devil back into devils. :)

I just image google searched "mobogo" for sh's and giggles; and Kim Kardashian's face came up. Why is she everywhere?
I think she's a hobogo.

Shadow Lodge

awesome so want to see that in front of me I have been planning to use one with my party for the longest time but have been holding out in the hopes that they would get reprinted somewhere and updated (was sad when kingmaker didn't update the mobogo when they did the ecology of the boggard). Now though I am sooooo psyched now all I have to do is pick the right time for my smooth talking contractor to make an appearance. Ohh also have to ask what are the vishkanya like? Did they change from the race builder example or are they pretty much the same? Also what are their weapon proficiency's that they get? I have a player that is running a ninja one and we have been waiting for this book to find out what weapons she gets to use.

Not sure if this has been gone over, but I'll add this in as a teaser since it's something I'm very interested in :

Playable Races

#1 : Catfolk
Pretty much a typical vision of catfolk (LOVE the artwork by the way, it's of a sneaky female catfolk who comes across as both tawdry and mischievous). Bonuses to Dex & Cha, penalties to Wis. Low light, some ability to use cat luck to avoid failures once per day, boosted speed when they move in a straight line, and bonuses to perception stealth and survival. Like I said, nothing radical, but a solid take on catfolk.

#2 : Ratfolk
No jokes about these two not getting along. :) The artwork makes them look smaller than they are, thanks to them riding a medium sized rat. They're small sized with darkvision, and they like tinkering with things (kind of like tinker gnomes), so they get bonuses on Alchemy, Perception, and UMD. They get bonuses dealing with rats too. :) Finally, they're really good at swarming enemies, they can share their spaces with other ratfolk and flank when doing so. Like most small races, they have strength penalties, and bonuses to Dex and Int. They make great rogues or arcane casters.

#3 : Suli
These are basically elementally touched humans (kind of similar to Aasimar and Tieflings, but with genie blood). They get bonuses to strength and charisma, but aren't very smart. They make good spontaneous casters obviously. They get bonuses on face skills, being good at diplomacy and sense motive. They also get resistance to all four elements (granted, not very strong resistance). They get lowlight too. Finally, once per day, they coat their arms in one type of elemental energy for a short time (duration goes up with their level). Any unarmed strikes or weapon attacks gain that elemental damage. So not a bad choice for Monk either, other than the cha not helping that class. Artwork is pretty decent, although I'd have preferred if they went with something other than fire, fire's done to death.

#4 : Vanara
Basically sentient monkey men. They get bonuses to dex and wis, but penalties to cha. So good choice for a druid or cleric. They get a climb speed, duh, which is always nice. They also get lowlight. No big surprise that a monkey race would get bonuses on acrobatics and stealth. Probably the best thing about the race is the tail. You can't use it for weapons, but you can use it to retrieve things on you as a swift action. So no need to take your hands off weapons to drink a potion. :)

#5 : Vishkanya
Ok, here we continue the animal motiff with snake/reptile race. Honestly I think it's more snake than anything else. Very fine small scales make up the skin (and the artwork is very nice, evokes a very strong Hindu feel to me, maybe with some Asian undertones). They get bonuses to dex and cha, but penalties to wis. They get lowlight, and a bonus on perception. They are also considered very twisty types (as you'd expect from snakes), so they get bonuses on Escape Artist and Stealth checks (you can insert your favorite joke about flexibility and pole dancers here). They get a scaling bonus on saves against poison (which is probably one of the niftiest things to have given how nasty poison is in PF). As if that weren't enough goodies, they never poison themselves with poison. And, as if that weren't enough wholesome poison goodness, they can use their own saliva and blood to poison their weapons (number of times per day based on Con). They're body fluids are toxic to other creatures (make sure you have protection if you date one!). Oh, they get a racial proficiency with a couple of weapons (you can probably guess which ones), but most people never use them. All in all, this is probably the most overpowered of the new races, rest are fairly balanced. But this one is like a poison TWF rogue's wet dream.

Remember that these races are not designed to be used as player characters, so balancing them against the standard PC races has probably never been a design issue.

I know it says "<race> as characters" but that in not intended to imply "player character". That information is necessary to create a member of that race at all, because you can't have a catfolk, for example, without a character class, just as you can't have a human without a character class, since these races do not have any racial hit dice.

In short, having a paragraph called "<race> as characters" does not mean "This is a race for player characters".

Yes for Ahuizotl. No for Ravid, IIRC it's right next with Etherealsomethings in "too lame, won't even try" category at Paizo.

I agree its appearance is boring, ugly and pathetic, but its special ability to animate objects and create living objects is unique and awesome.

I always used Ravids as heavenly blue Rage Drakes instead of the lumpy looking hand-worm they are suppose to be.

If I were paizo I would copy their unique ability to another monster, as there are animated objects, so why not a positive-energy monster that creates such objects into armies?

However i'm not sure the Poltergeist can animate objects already, but only one object at the time isn't enough to match the Ravids power to animate an entire room full of objects.

Have you ever tried running an entire room of animated objects as a GM? With every of them having different stats? Which you have to make up beforehand? I did, and it's not fun. :)

That's a shame, so every extremly unique ability can't be writen into the game?

Spawning monsters and animating objects is all too difficult to do? What about undead that summon other undead? Shouldn't those be difficult aswel? And as GM you can make your own levels, so having the ravid animate only 2 or 3 objects is also an option you have and having a spawning monsters spawning only 5 minions is another one.

It's not impossible, it just boggles down the game horribly. It's a different thing to have an outsider who can summon one specific type of other outsider, and it's a different thing to have something that can generate IIRC 5 different statblocks - and let's not forget that in PF, animated objects are customizable, making it even more complicated.

Sure, very complicated fights are fine - but usually as BBEG encounters. Ravid is hardly one.

Well if they are too lame, maybe i'll see them in Misfit Monsters redeemed 2 one day. :D

OK, serious question coming:

Caulborn - lots of changes here from how they were presented in City of Strangers - stats, looks, description, artwork... I think they look cooler than in CoS, but I'm curious if it's a deliberate change or a result of "geee, the artwork is different, gotta adjust the monster around it".

Never said they were.

Having said that, none of them are as powerful as Aasimar/Tieflings (Witht he possible exception of the Suni). So they will not unbalance your game either.

Catfolk. Caroline Eade knocked it out of the park with this one. I have to admit when I first heard about this race I was worried that it would go too far in either the "furry" direction or anime-catgirl-hey-she-has-cat-ears-done direction. Just gonna say Thundercats fans are going to be really happy.(now if only there were a playable pony race)

I feel your pain.

I'd play an Earth Pony Monk with the Marid Style and ice-based Qinggong powers! Her name would be Winter Mint! With a snowflake cutie mark! :)

I'd play an Unicorn Bladebound Kensai dressed as a Lin Kuei with a wakisaki and a focus on stealth, telekinesis and teletransportation powers. His name would be Wasabi and his cutie mark, a hood, but I would call him My Little Assasin!

Darn no claw attacks for the catfolk, but I still want play one.

Ravids are not lame but the animate object power should be limited as not to create an enemy more powerful then it's self.

The Vanara is a race I would like to play as a monk.

So what monsters from the bonus bestairy got new artwork?

Just the Allip I believe.

No new art for these creatures. They have replaced two of them with art from other products. The Faerie Dragon uses art from an AP and the Allip uses art from Undead Revisited. All of the others are the same as the Bonus Bestiary (sometimes flipped). While there is also some art reused from other products, overall there is ton of all-new art and the product overall looks fantastic. My kids are dying to see it in all of its physical glory.

What CR and powers does the boogeyman have and does he really look like a clown?

What type, CR, abilities does the Kappa have?

I don't suppose someone would be kind enough to finally post a complete list of the monsters from the Bestiary 3? Pretty please??

And, if it's not too much trouble, please include the monster category (I don't mean 'Type', although I won't complain if that was included...) as in "Kuwa (oni)" for those monsters where it's not obvious what they are based on their name alone, e.g. "Faerie Dragon" is fine as is, but "Marai" by itself is not particularly informative... ("Marai (rakshasa)", on the other hand, is.)

Oh, and thank you Mikaze for your posts! So far, they're the closest to what I've requested above. (Are your posts a complete listing as you go through the book, or have you been leaving out those entries that had no impact on you on your first look?)

Please and thank you. m(_ _)m
