This is a long overdue review-

I should start by saying that I’m glad I was given a 1st printing of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook as a gift. Because now, after seeing it in action for nearly 2 years, I would not have purchased it. I currently both play and run Pathfinder RPG games, because that is what my fellow gamers play these days (which I suppose speaks positively for the system), and it is decent enough. I enjoy game time with the Pathfinder system, I suppose, however nothing stands out as particularly new, exciting, or innovative. All in all it is a relatively minor rehash of an existing system. I really wanted to be a heavy supporter of Pathfinder just like most of my friends, after all it is what the cool cats are playing these days, but I’m still having trouble finding merit in that cause. After playing the beta version and with the hype surrounding it, I assumed that the little annoying problems in D&D v.3.5 would’ve finally been either streamlined and improved or logically evolved into its own game, but instead I received an enormous book to slog through for rules that only rarely improve upon the base material and often changes it for seemingly no good reason.

I’m not going to go into great detail on a lot of the lesser issues I have with the system, many I understand are personal preference more than anything, but there are a few glaring problems I need to mention.

The binding I particularly would like to discuss; it is quite possibly the worst bound book I’ve ever read. Not only can it not stand up to abuse as most hard cover books can, but after a few weeks of light usage the binding began to fail. It is only through extremely careful handling that it is amazingly in 1 piece, mostly at any rate. Its heavy, nearly 600 page count doesn’t help with that issue either. The other hard cover books for Pathfinder I possess, well, they haven’t fared much better. I want to note, however, that despite being of very poor physical quality, I consider the appearance (especially the artwork, which is wonderful compared to most RPG products) to be significantly improved over its predecessor. Again, I have a 1st printing of the book and do not know if the quality has improved in any later copies.

Luckily, the PRD is free online where it belongs (see binding and quality problems above). That, in itself, speaks greatly for the game. I fully support Pathfinder being free and readily accessible to all who want to play it.

The book is extremely difficult to navigate for new and old RPG players alike. While most in my group are used to the rules, when we need to find something specific we often have to cross reference several different pages each holding incomplete tables or summaries, which cuts into game time. Again the PRD has a search function that can help, which is amazingly useful, but only when you are near an internet accessible computer. We’ve attempted to teach a couple of newer players the system as well, but they’ve struggled with the layout, and it is frustrating to teach, while they much more quickly adapt to other games.

There have been quite a few positive changes to D&D v.3.5 along with the negative with the advent of the Pathfinder RPG, although most feel like a series of specific and relatively minor houserules. I unfortunately have to say that I do not recommend purchasing this book. It simply isn’t worth a $50 investment in my honest opinion. It is a solid game, but not only does it not stand out amidst a crowd, but you can get the rules for free online. But if you find a used copy a bit cheaper at a local gaming shop, you won’t be disappointed. Paizo publishes many great products, and I’ll eventually get around to reviewing each one that I have, but I can’t say that the Core Rulebook is one of them. Pathfinder brings with it a wealth of amazingly flavorful supplemental material, a vibrant campaign setting, and excellent modules and adventure paths.

years of high fantasy gaming in one book

Playtest Review
Three of the six players in my group didn’t try RPGs until last year and two started with Pathfinder. They have no experience with D&D 3.5 and with it being out of print that makes some sense. This review, therefore, doesn't refer to 3.5, but instead looks at how the Core Rulebook works on its own merits.

The Pathfinder Core Rulebook was extensively playtested openly with both and Alpha and a Beta version. Multiple successful adventure paths and modules provide examples that the system works and works well.

Even so, how does the Pathfinder Core Rulebook work for a brand new group, half of who are brand new to RPGs? What is it like for the GM and players? Here’s what the Core Rulebook promises:

“The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is a tabletop fantasy game in which the players take on the roles of heroes who form a group (or party) to set out on dangerous adventures. Helping them tell this story is the Game Master (or GM), who decides what threats the player characters (or PCs) face and what sorts of rewards they earn for succeeding at their quest. Think of it as a cooperative storytelling game, where the players play the protagonists and the Game Master acts as the narrator, controlling the rest of the world.”

Does the Core Rulebook deliver on this promise? Do players, especially those recruited specifically to experience RPGs for the first time, feel like they are in a shared fantasy story enjoying directing the exploits of daring heroes they create and play?

Without a doubt, yes. The class based system gives a new player a hook on which to grab to get started and provides experienced players a familiar starting point. The classes are single names which do a good job of conjuring up what the player will have his character doing—a fighter fights for example and a wizard casts spells. New players grasp these concepts with no problems.

Character creation not only gives a new player a great start with a class, but it gets them thinking outside of combat when skills are chosen. Skills are easy to pick, with each character class getting a set number (set by class plus a bonus number for a high Intelligence). A character who takes one of the listed class skills gets a +3 bonus. Easy to grasp and gives each player an idea of the larger scope of abilities his or her character has and whether he or she trained mainly in class or pursued broader knowledge but at the expense of greater skill.

Race also goes beyond simple combat and game abilities. Each race has a half page of explanation and story ideas and a half page of rules. A player can get a good handle on how an average member of a race plays without getting buried in detail.

For the Game Master, chapters 12-15 provide everything needed to build worlds and adventures except for monsters. Campaign building advice, helpful rules for determining the challenge of an encounter and the right rewards, guidelines for creating NPCs, and detailed descriptions of magic items will be used over and over again by a GM.

This book is a toolbox containing all the key elements a player and a GM need to build characters, go on adventures, and enjoy a long campaign. While additional books like the Advanced Player’s Guide and the GameMastery Guide enhance and build on this material, they aren’t needed to play. A player only needs this book and the GM only needs it and the Bestiary to play in high fantasy campaigns for years.

The Core Rulebook does not provide a sample adventure or setting, it simply provides the guidelines for a GM to create their own works. A GM who wants to do less world and adventure building has many sourcebooks and modules to choose from but won’t find a premade world or adventure in this book.

The editing is tight, the layout is easy to follow, the art is great, and the story vignettes paint a picture of dangerous adventure undertaken by brave heroes.

If you need to start a new group or recruit new players, this book will help you start a new campaign and keep it going. If you want a decade or more of high fantasy gaming in a campaign built by you and your players with the option to add more material as you see fit, this book fits the bill.

As a bonus, you get high production values, extensively playtested rules, and a proven track record of adventures and worlds successfully built using these rules.

After playing pathfinder weekly for the last five months or so i'm seriously disappointed. I really enjoy the class/cross class skill system (you have 3 ranks in all class skills, and after that its 1 point regardless of class or cross class) They took Search and rolled it with spot/listen for perception nerfing one of the only nice utility skills for wizards though. Also lets talk about grappling, as far as the rules go I can grapple THROUGH A WALL or i can TRIP A GHOST. This was something that wasn't even broke in 3.5 and they took it and made it completely retarded. Did this even get playtested by competent players?

Have been using the Pathfinder core rule book for some time now and I think it is an excellent piece of work. Classes across the board have been given more variety, Streamlined skills, Improved core races, the list of improvments go on and on.

Is the product perfect? No but any complaints I have are very minor cracks covering a solid core so I would readily recomend this product to anyone.

hmmm....

2/5

High review results for this book (average 4.7 out of 5) and so much praise. Indeed, the book does bridge certain problems like condensing the skills to give characters more choice to spread skills around. The rage powers for the barbarian class was another nice and welcome addition. Good ideas by the creators.

However, then there is the problem with certain base classes which get too much too quickly. One example of this was the rogue. Rogue talents every two levels on top of the rogues broad class skill list and skill points per level. Each is as strong as a feat on top of everything else the class gives; evasion, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, etc.

The fighter who now gets the knights ability to move normally in medium/heavy armor. Sorcerer bloodlines giving them more oomph. Especially the one about being destined for greatness. Seen a player play one with that bloodline. Very bad choices made in game. Power crazy and got screwed horribly partway through the campaign. The list goes on.

While it is the impression of more power to the players, this makes classes which are relatively unchanged weaker. Hardly a uniformity of power across classes.

Npc classes were also surprising. Commoners were d6, experts and aristocrats d8, warriors d10. Seeing that commoners are literally thse who engage in the least combat, the upgraded hit die felt odd. Warriors are pretty much thugs and militia with training but not the specialized training of the fighter. Sure, they don't get the bonus feats but the fact that their hit die was equal with the fighter made little sense.

Some new feats were equally mind boggling. Cleave which now allowed you to attack an adjacent foe as long as you hit the previous one. Almost strong enough to replace whirlwind attack which actually had a feat tree attached to it.

Acrobatic steps and nimble moves which let you move through 20 feet of difficult terrain as if it were normal. This felt like it was just grabbing the mantle of the swashbuckler and drunken master since its one of the signature abilities of their class.

Arcane strike which lets a spellcaster makes his weapon magical as a swift action. No limit on the number of times they can do it per day. Trying to get around the problem of obtaining a magical weapon regardless of whether its through buying or adventuring. Too convenient.

The most laughable one was master craftsmen which lets you craft magic items in the sense of +1 to +(whatever) magical items. Really? So the blacksmith who has no exposure to or knowledge of the arcane pulls mystical energy from OUT OF NOWHERE and imbues the normal axe with magical power. Huge gap in logic there.

The list goes on. Too many imbalancing feats. All in all, some nice ideas but think i'll stick with 3.5 primarily for classes, rules and feats.

I had a dig around online, instead, and several places (including Amazon UK) have it for £37.99, so that seems to be the guide price. This means the cheapest way to purchase it is to order it from Amazon US! I may have to wait a week or two for it to arrive, but I've still got quite a way to go on my 3.5E Age of Worms campaign, so that's fine by me...

If shipping rates to Europe would not be that high (no fault of Paizo) I, as well as my friend would gladly have ordered directly from Paizo. Unfortunately the shipping cost is almost exactly the same as the book itself. Even ordering 3 or 4, the cost for the shipment is in no relation to the price of the book itself (cost for shipping being 2 bucks below the price of the book itself).

We kindly ask your understanding that (in this case) we, as well as othes, rather opt for ordering the book with Amazon (free shipment) or any local Gaming store (shipment being something around 5$ for a total weight of up to 20lbs (at least in Germany)).

Again, we understand that the cost for shipping is figured by the shipping company, not by Paizo.

We do hope that you folks at Paizo will find some comfort in knowing that we are ordering the PF-RPG, even though it will not be directly from Paizo themselves. We are sure that you folks will forgive us that tiny bit of selfishness. (please just ensure that retailers like Amazon (Europe and other Countries) and our local stores receive their shares of the book on time (Perfect would be the same time as do shops in the US)).

Yours truly, on behalf of all Pathfinder-Fans overseas of the US, (being sure that you will sell lots of the Rules to lots of residentd of any country outside of the US)

3.5 vs PFRPG Question:

Will older books (i.e. PF Gazetter) containing feats/traits/spells etc. that were written for 3.5 rules be updated in the Core Rulebook?
I raised a specific question in another thread and didn't get much feedback. Example - The war college feat in the gazetteer uses the x4 bonus skill points at 1st level for a fighter that takes this feat. Will Paizo be publishing a conversion document or will it be updated in the Core rule Book?

It has been said a few places, usually by James, that they will be doing free PDFs for things that need "updated" in that manner :)

I cannot figure out how to start a thread for a new question even when there are directions on the page. Anywho...

Has anyone else noticed that Animate Objects is no longer a wizard/sorcerer spell? I'm looking at the Beta Web Enhancement. Call me crazy, but this seems like a definitive arcane spell.

We will probably do a little conversion PDF for stuff, especially the Campaign Setting. But it may take a little bit, as there are lots of other fish to fry in the immediate short term.

Not in 3.5 it isn't; Pathfinder didn't change a thing in that regard.

Just ordered my scut copy from Amazon.ca. My "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH IT! EVEN IF YOU DID WASH YOUR HANDS!" copy I was planning to get from a FLGS or (maybe) through subscription depending on what gets announced at PaizoCon. FLGS might be hard decision: one has poorer service but regularly carries Pathfinder stuff, other has great service but is somewhat oblivious to anything non-Warhammer. Not sure which I should support.

I like big books, and I can not lie...

dances... badly...

So preview banquet notes: lets share the goodness, took 4 pages of notes and I saw someone with a camera so there may be a video coming.

The pdf is 578 pages including covers.

Jason says the rulebook is considered a weapon in 30 states, I beleive him :P, it's the second largest RPG book I've ever seen

Races: Favored classes are picked by player, humans and half elves get two.
half elves, half orcs, humans get +2 to an ability score to reflect human heritage.

Classes, rage points are gone in favor of a duration as indicated previously.
Cleric domains now include the spells from 3.5 and also offer a few powers.
Fireball is in the fire domain
Domains, schools, bloodlines are in the classes chapter

Paladin has heavy changes, detect evil is immediate, no waiting 3 rounds, smite evil lasts until opponent is dead, 2X damage to fiends, dragons, and undead, Ignore DR, Bonus to AC vs smited critter.
Paladins gain "Mercies" which allow them to remove conditions as part of lay on hands, lay on hands now handled with 1d6/2 lvls.
Pally CL is level -3

Skills
Perception is no longer broken down by sense so much, intended to simplify.
Concentration checks are now CL+relevant ability score, I think the DC was mentioned as 20.

page 2 coming soon

Feats, the feat table is 4 pages, I'd guesstimate there are twice as many as in 3.5 core. lots of fighter only/high level feats such as vital strike which i believe was in the beta.

Medium and Heavy armor got better by +1 across the board as an incentive to use it. Mithral armor requires proficiency in regular armor of that type.

Combat, there is a combat defense Class BAB + Str + Dex + anything that gives an armor bonus to AC

Magic: spells are much cheeper to write into spellbook

100 pages of spells, darkness/light spells have been clairified 4 levels of darkness : Darkness/Dim Light/Light/Bright Light. spells modify the light area by one or more steps.

Assassins can kill people and they stay dead.
Shadowdancer will be changed extensively and will be perviewed in Kobold Quarterly #10.

Game mastering tips section includes exp chards and the wealth by level chart on p 399 to make it easy to find.

Environment: underwater combat has been revised a bit to clear up the chart (tail not bludgeoning)

Magic items:
Few changes, physical enhancement items are all belts, mental enhancements are all hats.

You make a craft check when you make an item if you fail your effort is wasted, if you fail badly you get a cursed item, each cursed item is listed as what the item may have been intended to be, before it got messed up.

it was also strongly indicated (by a pdf related accident) that monks may have full BAB progression (and a commensurate insane number of attacks with flurry)

That's it for the notes on the RPG core book. Hope to see many more of you at PaizoCon next year.

The way to get a free PDF is to subscribe to the RPG line. Subscriptions will be available later in the week. If you've preordered and you subscribe, we'll essentially convert your first preorder copy into your subscriber copy.

OK, I guess I will just wait to see what happens later this week, since I guess your saying that being a Pathfinder and Map subscriber isn't the same as being a "RPG subsciriber".

It's the same reason you don't get a free PDF with a preorder of a Companion, Chronicles, or Modules product as an Adventure Path subscriber. You only get a pdf of the products that you purchase as part of a subscription. Your subscription will trump your preorder, and you'll get the book and pdf when it ships in August.

okay maybe not actually kiss....would a big hearty handshake and smile be sufficient?

Plus I would still like to know if I could pick up my copy at Gen Con, and get some signatures!

Yes to the first. As for the second, you can certainly buy a copy there and get it signed, but right no there's no way to for you to pick up a preorder or subscription copy at Gen Con. (We know folks want it, but it's really not easy to do.) If that changes, we'll let you know.

OK, Thanks Vic!

Why not still charge the shipping option but allow people to pick up their books at GenCon? Require that the indicate prior to GenCon - say prior to 1-Aug - that they plan to pick up the book at GenCon. That way you know how many to bring as well as can create a list of those picking up the book. If for some reason they didn't pick it up, you've still collected the shipping fee to cover sending it to them.

It's a bit of work, but is certainly doable. (I picked up my copy of Ptolus at GenCon a couple of years ago. If Monte can manage it, I'm sure that Paizo can!)

Eric in another thread that there are more than several hundred preorders. I would imagine thousands... it maybe like Vic said that it might be hard to organise.

I agree, for the folks at Gencon, it would be nice.

I understand. However, as they are selling the book at GenCon, they are shipping them to Indy anyway. It doesn't seem to be that hard to have a list of those that plan to pick them up there with them as well.

Just some thoughts.

The Exchange

Every already sold book that they bring to GenCon is one un-sold book they have to leave in the warehouse. I don't know if that has anything to do with their decision, I mean being Paizo they are pretty good about treating their customers right. However, given the size and weight of the tome, I would be suprised if it was not at least a consideration. I mean they only have X amount of floor space at the show, and a few hundred pre-orders would consume a good part of that in what amounts to temparary storage.

Yep agreed - it will be some logistics work!

It's my understanding that purchasing it at the Paizo booth will not entitle anyone to a discount on the PDF or include the PDF. (Please correct me if I am wrong.)

So, then you have people who have pre-ordered or now belong to the new subscription who faithfully subscribe, but are not able to obtain the book at a convention where it is first unveiled ;-)

Just trying to please everyone.

For myself: If I can get the book there as part of a subscription, then I will subscribe. Otherwise, it's ~$18 cheaper at Amazon. No PDF that way, but $18 is $18!

Actually, you're just trying to please yourself. I mean that's OK, but let's call a spade a spade.

For the record, I agree it would be great if those going to GenCon could pick up their pre-orders/subscriptions there, but if Paizo says they can't do it, must people badger them on the subject? I'm sure if they can figure out a way to bring the books and not create a bunch of logistical nightmares, they will change their minds and let folks know.

Picking up preorders or subscription copies at Gen Con would require a significant rewrite to our order processing system. It's really not even close to as easy as just making a list.

We will consider it, just like we did last year.

Well, in my case, I can afford to buy another copy if I decide having one to get signatures in is that important to me. Signatures is the real reason I would like the book at GenCon, otherwise having it mailed to my home is the far more convenient option. Plus I want the PDF, since I do a LOT of on line gaming, and being able to copy/paste stuff if I ever play PF is a very nice convenience.

If I've a friend going to Origins, I'll put getting one signed on his shopping list.

(Last time I tried this, I jsut asked him to pick up a signed copy of The Anubis Murders, he forgot. Must write things down it's bad when we both have Attention Deficit- Squirrel!)

The book won't be out at Origins. Did you mean GenCon?

Why wait!?

For a mere $1,004, TSCBooks claims to be able to send you a copy right away! (Amazon.com, used.)

Seems like somebody needs to get in trouble for something.

I can only hope this will be the first thing I ever order from Paizo.
