Hey folks, finally checking in as promised. First off, I want to apologize for dropping off the face of the Earth for the last several weeks. Everything basically snowballed - work/life busyness cut into the free time more than usual, then when I *had* the free time I'd either be tired/unable to focus on writing or had other things seeking my time, and so the longer I went without posting the harder it got to want to sit down and post even though I knew I needed to at least check in with folks if nothing else. I definitely have a better understanding of and sympathy for others who've ghosted games and then later returned to explain how things happened and they fell into a shame/embarrassment cycle mental block about the lack of posting.
It also doesn't help that there was and still is an undercurrent of me just not really feeling Pathfinder in general as of late. Even with 2e simplifying the game in a lot of ways that I actually appreciate and enjoy, it's felt like there's just so much to keep track of and every time I turn around there's another 3 or 4 classes coming out or another big setting book or it's already time for another brand new year of PFS and the usual metaplot to go with it. So I've been in a weird place where I've missed the *people* but not...really missing playing all that much. Which also made me feel guilty, even though I logically know it shouldn't.
All that said, my interest level in hobbies tends to wax and wane over time so my Pathfinder lull isn't likely to be permanent. It's taken me longer than I expected just to try and figure out what I wanted to say in this post but I know you guys have been waiting on Soddy before closing out the current adventure. If you'll bear with me a little bit longer, I'll try and get to that tomorrow/later today (since it's 3am local time as I type this). Also, remind me what you needed from me as campaign admin and I'll get that done as well. After that, I'll try and figure out what I want to do when it comes to playing and our campaign together, if that's okay. Thanks again and I'm sorry for worrying everyone.
Hey folks, I just wanted to pop in and apologize for dropping off the face of the Earth for the last several weeks. All is well on my end, but long story short is that a combination of life being busy + general PbP/Pathfinder burnout threw a big wrench into my having the time or inclination to post - and then the longer I went without posting, the harder it got to make myself check in, even to just drop a courtesy note and officially bow out of the game.
(I used to wonder when others would sometimes talk about falling into a sort of shame/embarrassment spiral in regards to vanishing from games and then hitting a mental block about checking in, but now I definitely get it.)
All that said, I'm sorry if I made anyone worry and I'm sorry to the good GM and other players for taking up your time while you waited for me to check in. Thank you again for the invitation and I hope you all have a fantastic game!
If it helps, I'm definitely looking at an arcane caster of some sort but not a summoner. Under other circumstances the challenge of working within the setting limitations might be fun, but I'm at a point where the less complicated my characters are (in a mechanical sense), the better :)
Right now I'm leaning towards the witch idea, though I need to finish looking at the other occult classes & archetypes before I make my final decision. But to get a move on in *some* way, let's see what lineage we're working with! Out of the remaining options...
d’Honaire
Reniers
Godefroy
Mordenheim
Drakov
1d5 ⇒ 3 --> Godefroy it is!
______________
In the real world, I live in southern Kentucky and work the graveyard shift in a hospital laboratory. I tend to roughly stick to my night hours even on the days I'm not working, since my husband is also a night owl and we don't have any kiddos to worry about.
So it sounds like we've tentatively got...an oracle, a pyrokineticist, a cleric, and maybe a bard type, so far? I've got a couple of old characters whose concepts/backgrounds could be reworked for a game like this:
Desnan warpriest (originally made it to the beginning of Book 4 of CC)
Iomedaean inquisitor (originally made it to early Book 2 of CC)
Witch (originally played in a homebrew Walking Dead of Golarion game)
Summoner (no special ties to old CC/SA games but she and her eidolon have existed across different editions and formats because she's a grump and I have fun playing her)
Still here and still tentatively interested; will noodle over some character ideas now that we have some creation guidelines to work with~
I think I've got my new character built, except for equipment. How much gold/whatever - mindful that we've got ABP rules going - do we have to work with?

I'll look to finish up my character tonight - and regarding your spoiler GM, that sounds like a good enough hook to me :)
^Similar situation; game is mostly done but I'm missing RPG Chronicles info for two players. As soon as I have that, I'll get 'er reported.

Per the email that GMs (hopefully) should have received:
Door Prizes
Paizo has graciously offered up prize vouchers for Gameday, and we will be randomly drawing winners from a pool of all players and GMs for reported games. These vouchers will need to be emailed, so please encourage your players to fill in their emails when signing up so that we can get them their prizes when they win.
We also have a set of boons for our PFS1 players. Each GM and Player of a PFS1 game has a 10% chance to win one of our lovely boons at random. Have everyone at your table roll a d20 and a roll of 1 or 20 wins. Please select the prize won in the dropdown field on the RPGChronicles report (page 2 if you are using RPGChronicles for signups), and make sure they filled in their email addresses so we can send them out.
Sounds good to me! I may not have a lot to say right yet but I'm definitely here and watching :)
I also don't have any glyphs to share yet, unfortunately. There was a period of a year or two where, while I didn't quit PbP entirely or anything, my engagement was low and I basically didn't play or GM anything that wasn't con-related or related to a personal invitation from someone. So if you check my PFS tracker stuff, you'll see that there's a lot of scenarios, quests, and bounties that I've not played (or GMed).
Hellooooo~
As I mentioned to our lovely GM, I have several character options I can bring ranging from 1st to 3rd so I may wait to see what others are bringing before I decide :)
Fun Fact: I haven't played or GMed this before so I'm looking forward to it!
Hmm...let's see. The biggest one is that I did play in a PbP run of Carrion Crown that made it to the beginning of Book 4 before the GM had to shelve it due to RL stuff - that said, that particular game began August 2015 and ended April 2019 so it's been a while since I've actually experienced any of the material.
I played in a PbP Strange Aeons game for a short while but dropped it due to a combination of slow pacing + hitting some PbP burnout and needing to cut back on games. I don't think I even played my character past the first area where the AP starts.
Also briefly played in a PbP run of I6: Castle Ravenloft but dropped it for similar burnout reasons.
And a loooong time ago, my old home group played through the Ravenloft modules 'The Created' and 'Night of the Walking Dead'. There might've been more but I can't remember what they would've been.

^Yes, in some ways I suspect it's actually *easier* (at least in theory) to deal with someone that's engaging in very obvious egregiously bad behavior because there are guidelines on how to handle it. But it's harder to deal with players who seem to often question your judgement as GM, because while I *do* want to be corrected if I actually get something wrong it's tiring to have people go, "Are you sure that's right?" when yes indeed it's right there in the scenario that this is how it happens/works. I've not GMed enough 2E to know if this comes up as much but when GMing 1E I've finally started preemptively saying, "And no, that's not a mistake, there's a reason this happens/they can do that" when there are specific shenanigans or edge cases happening that trump otherwise established rules on how things work.
And the thing is, no one is breaking any rules by posing such questions. In my experience, it's usually not even stated in a rude or confrontational manner. But when you see where other GMs seem to be taken at their word when running the same scenarios and encounters it gets demoralizing and makes me second-guess my own GMing capabilities.

Encouragement from Hmm is what got me to finally give GMing a try back during the later seasons of 1E. I participated in a PbP GM school and each of us ran one of the Phantom Phenomena quests, with the other GMs-in-training + a couple of experienced GMs/PbP VOs sitting as players. It was fun, it was low-stress, and everyone felt free to ask questions without worrying about messing something up.
I continue to GM because it's fun, especially if I happen to really vibe with a particular scenario or module. It's also a nice feeling to give back and run for new players and for the people who've ran games for me. The old race boons from 1E and now the AcP bonus are certainly nice perks but they're not the primary motivator for me.
The most off-putting thing for me as a GM that doesn't involve player issues is the sheer volume of material (new classes, new ancestries, new mechanics, new/expanded lore) to try and keep up with. I buy the material but I largely don't even try to read through it all until I encounter a situation (whether as a player or as a GM) where I need to know something about it or a particular thing piques my interest. It's also why I basically don't engage with the Starfinder system at this time; between PF 1E & 2E, I've got enough to juggle (and even then, I'm slowly phasing out my 1E participation).

Howdy folks! Alex Speidel just posed an interesting series of questions to the Organized Play community on how to recruit & keep GMs. I encourage people to go check it out and share any tips, tricks, information, etc. that might be useful to our organizers and each other! :)

Howdy folks! I was asked to poke my head in and offer a little guidance as regards botting and communication at the table.
When it comes to multi-table specials we ask at this time that table GMs give players a full 24 hours (or close to it) to post their actions before botting them, even if an individual GM might give more (or less) time at a regular table. It's always best to communicate this up front at the start of a game so that your players will know what is expected from them in terms of posting speed and what to expect from you, the GM, if they're unable to post.
When it comes to playing in multi-table specials, we ask that players do their best to communicate any issues they might have with being able to post in a timely manner. Obviously emergencies and other things can come up that leave PbP as the last thing on someone's mind but it's helpful to check in when you can, even if it's to say that something's going on and that you'll need to be botted for <X amount of time>. This is where having botting spoilers can be quite handy - and they can be as basic or elaborate as you like - just so long as your GM has at least some idea of what to do with your character in your absence.
Finally, it's also important to keep in mind that everyone is here to have a good time. Many of the issues and hiccups I've seen at tables here on Paizo have often just been a result of miscommunication and misunderstanding rather than maliciousness or laziness. Hopefully the guidelines I've posted above will help clear things up and get things on track so that everyone can enjoy the rest of the special.
As always, please feel free to send me (or Redelia or numbat if you prefer) a PM if you have any questions or additional concerns and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can.
Cheers,
Lady Ladile, VA - PbP

Scenario support was only sent in by Bigrin today (as today was the deadline) so expect to see it drop closer to the convention start date. Some people may already have a copy of the special from having GMed it previously at another convention.
phaeton_nz wrote: Well it would be impossible to do it in an in-person environment unless you had access to cloning technology but in a pbp forum it could indeed be possible.
I'll go find that GM thread.
True, and I don't blame you for asking! PbP/PbD is sort of an odd beast compared to IRL games and conventions.
As for the GM thread, you should have a link to it in the PM I sent out to my GMs a short while back :)
phaeton_nz wrote: Does running a table of the PFS1 special counts as qualifying for an early signup? Yes, that qualifies you to sign up early for 1 regular table and 1 special table.
phaeton_nz wrote: And is it possible to play on another table in the same special that one is GMing? Unlikely I suspect. It's more likely than you think! You can certainly GM for a special and also play in that same special at a different table :)

In case you haven't already seen/heard the announcement....
Starfinder Second Edition is Coming!
:)
While Starfinder news, it also has relevance to PF2E so go check it out!
Yes, you can submit to run as many tables as you'd like but we always ask folks to keep their own limits in mind and not overdo it.
If you need scenario support for a particular table you need to have it submitted by August 7th. After that, you'll have to provide your own copy.

Given that Pathfinder is a TTRPG I don't think it should be any surprise that a lot of folks want more Pathfinder CRPGs - I'm one of them. That said, I don't blame Paizo a bit for looking to branch their brand out into other video game genres if the pitch is compelling enough! I'll admit up front that I don't know anything about marketing but wouldn't it raise brand awareness with folks who might find the setting cool and want to look into it more?
This particular type of game isn't my style so I'll be giving it a pass but I hope it - and the AV game which I *am* going to try - do well so we keep getting Pathfinder (and hopefully Starfinder) video games in general.

Okay GMs, this is the closing weekend for Outpost. Most of you have already wrapped up your games and reported by now (great job, by the way), but we still have about 30 games still going. Please wrap these up as soon as possible so your players can get ready for the next adventure.
Even if it looks like you won’t finish the gameplay by May 15 we are asking you to go ahead and report your games by the deadline so that we can finish up the admin stuff and close out the convention before Paizocon. Please help us by getting these last few games reported. Thanks again for stepping up to run games. It is greatly appreciated!

The vibe I am getting is that you don't actually want to play society, you just want to use it as an excuse to complain about something. That has been your most consistent interaction with society as a program. Though to be honest, I’m mostly NOT interested in PFS
I’m kind of annoyed that almost all PBPs are PFS, and that there is a “you have to play PFS to earn the right to play in a non-PFS pbp” culture that has formed online Go here instead, then, rather than PFS forums. Adding on to the above, I've *personally* never seen any games dictate that you must have played PFS PbP before being eligible to join a non-PFS PbP game.
What I *have* seen, and recommended myself, is that people who are looking to try PbP for the first time either try a PFS game or a module, because those are generally less of a time commitment than a homebrew or Adventure Path is. That way, if it turns out that PbP format is not to one's liking, it's much easier to bow out of the game with a minimum of fuss for everyone involved.

Hello! John Woodford has already answered most of this but yes, Gameday and Outpost are our two regularly-occurring PbP & PbDiscord conventions. They're run as part of Organized Play and feature games for Pathfinder Society 2E & 1E and Starfinder Society. Outpost typically runs from early March through mid-to-late May and Gameday typically runs from early September through mid-November.
If you're interested in Organized Play, we've got a basic Google Slides setup that contains links to various online lodges, how-to guides, points of contact, and more:
Play-by-Post Lodges
Hope that helps answer some of your questions :)
