I figure the man himself will pop up in the forums, but thought I'd give him a boost until he does. This is an example of the concept of "universal archetypes" (something I think he introduced with Rogue (or Super) Genius Games back in the day). I'd love to see more 1e options!

I feel like I should already know the answer to this, but just in case I don't, is the effect of the spell permanent or does the caster have recast it once their spellbook is retrieved? For reference, here's the relevant text of the spell:

EFFECT
Range touch
Target spellbook touched
Duration instantaneous

This spell sends a spellbook into a random but safe location on the Ethereal Plane, where it remains indefinitely. When you cast this spell, the target spellbook dissolves into quickly fading lines of energy and runes that reflect all of the spells stored within. Thereafter, you can retrieve the spellbook by concentrating as a standard action, causing it to reappear in your hands. You cannot cast this spell on another spellbook if you currently have a spellbook in the Ethereal Plane. No other creatures or objects accompany the spellbook you send away, and the duration of any spells currently affecting the spellbook continue normally.

My 3.0 material, for the most part, is stored in some crates on my back porch (enclosed and temperature regulated, thank goodness) but I'm having a super bad chronic pain day and can't move things to get to them. So, I would like to ask for this simple favor; can someone let me know what its benefits are to a player? I'm completely drawing a blank.

Thanks in advance!

Today I announced to my crew of three decades that I can no longer GM for them, or at least not for a very long time. I felt I was coming out of my slump and was getting excited about world-building a Far Eastern-styled campaign or running a module (something brand new to me, basically). But when I got my notes out last night, I fell into a panic attack - sobbing and trembling and shaking so badly that my whole body aches today.

But, for now, my anxiety and panic disorders win. I hope and pray it's not permanent because this is the only hobby and means of socializing that I have left. Mental illnesses like mine also impact simple things like reading, something I was once voracious about, so that's not an option anymore. And so, for a while at least, my dice will sleep until they are summoned again.

I still plan to haunt the boards as much as I ever have, and I would also extend a Facebook invitation to anyone who'd like to join me over there and place bets on how long it takes before I'm sent to the dungeons of Castle Zuckula again (it would take too long to explain all of that nonsense here). My email addie is in my forum profile, so send me a note if you want.

Has anyone converted the Shugenja (divine caster) from either of these sources? They're essentially the same, with a few tweaks made for the Rokugan version.

Thanks.

Has anyone run this adventure? What are your thoughts on it?

I have run a total of ONE module in my 38 years of gaming, "Baba Yaga's Dancing Hut" from a 1e Dragon magazine, but I'm thinking of running my players through it.

From the Archetype's description, "A black blade is always a one-handed slashing weapon, a rapier, or a sword cane. The magus chooses the blade’s type upon gaining the blade, and once chosen, it can’t be changed". I interpret this to mean any type of slashing, one handed blade, such as a khopesh, which normally RAW requires the feat Exotic Weapon Proficiency. Would the Bladebound Magus be able to ignore the necessity of taking the feat?

Thanks in advance!!

I was today years old when I found out that the second season of "The Bad Batch" premiered on January 4th of this new year. I should have my Nerd Card suspended.

I realize going in that a)This may have been addressed before but I couldn't find anything about it and b)This will probably start a fight, which is not my intent in the least. It's just something that crossed my fevered mind the other night.

So, do-able?

Posted by a friend of mine a few minutes ago. I'm having a bad brain day and as such I'm not thinking the clearest. What would something like this mean for sites like d20pfsrd.com?

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?.

I'm going to have to railroad things to get my game off the ground Saturday. I'm not above doing that in very minor cases but this is the event that starts the adventure. Players in a tavern on a cold and stormy night huddled together around mugs of ale, wine, and cider to fend off the winter chill. Sleep-type magic might work for some, but most of that requires a Will Save and more than half of the party are high Will Savin' types so that could be problematic.

I should have given this more thought rather than waiting until the 11th Hour, but real life has hit hard this week and I've been really distracted by the possibility of being homeless in a couple of months.

Anyway, any thoughts on spells, poisons, items, or anything?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

So, I didn't order this. I'm pretty sure I knew about it, but I didn't order it. I have a Mysterious Internet Gaming Benefactor and sometimes things just show up like this.

Anyway, it looks great. I can't wait to dig into it.

I started gaming at the age of 21 in 1985, so pretty much the height of the Satanic Panic era. I seldom encountered anyone who tried to tell me about "the dangers" of Dungeons and Dragons, but I knew they were out there. One night during a game in my DM's dorm room a copy of the Jack Chick tract, "Dark Dungeons", came sliding under the door and across the floor. Then we heard someone running away down the hall. We never saw who the person was but we all got a pretty big laugh at how ludicrous it was.

This is a brand new documentary on Tubi (a streaming television app) and so far it's been pretty tame, but then again I'm only about 10 minutes in.

Satanic Panic

Hi, all. It looks like some of my Covid symptoms are going to be around for a long time to come. I can't focus well tonight and I'm helping someone put together a new character who'll wear heavy armor. My question is does the Armor Check Penalty (-6 in this case) affect the character's Flatfooted Armor Class score?

Thanks for putting up with my diminishing faculties.

...but having COVID twice has given me long C19 symptoms, the worst being extreme fatigue and brain fog. The brain fog is the issue today.

So, a character can't have more ranks in a skill than their current level, correct? What about the extra rank for being Human? And then taking the Favored Class feature extra rank? Let's say this person is wanting to qualify for a prestige class, it doesn't matter which. But one of the requirements says, for example, a character must have 8 ranks in Sleight of Hand to qualify. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, and I swear I used to, wouldn't that make the character reach the 8 required ranks BEFORE making eighth level? If anyone can help a drastically befuddled GM out it would be greatly appreciated. And I'm serious when I ask to explain it like I'm the kid who licks windows in kindergarten.

Here's the text from d20pfsrd.com

"The number of skill ranks you gain when taking a level in one of the base classes is shown on Table: Skill Ranks. Humans gain 1 additional skill rank per class level. Characters who take a level in a favored class have the option of gaining 1 additional skill rank or an additional hit point . If you select a level in a new class, all of its class skills are automatically added to your list of class skills, and you gain a +3 bonus on these skills if you have ranks in them."

I created our setting back in 1990, with adventures taking place in and around a massive, ancient city named Unkhoor. Like a lot of GMs out here I went into a pretty meticulous amount of detail about the people, the history of the city and its home country, and so forth. The most important historical detail was that a thousand years earlier it and most of the continent were under the rule of a race of psionic Humans called the Ransoori and that a legendary figure, a gladiator-slave named Daormeti, led an uprising and overthrew the their corrupt and decadent masters.

I ran games in the setting for over twenty years, then created a new city in another part of the world where players could face new challenges, etc. But in 2017, after the final game of what was called the "Dar-Shalul Campaign", one of my players suggested a campaign set in Unkhoor's past, shortly before and then during the uprising that freed the people under Ransoori rule. I thought it was a good idea, so I got to work on it. It started out sort of wonky, with the players doing a couple of things I didn't expect (as usual) but I went with it like I've always done. But things spun out of control in a hurry. I introduced alternate timelines and parallel worlds where the uprising's results turned out wildly different. And then I started hating the game. I couldn't find a logical way to fix it and I didn't want to just snap my fingers like Q would and fix things, so I ended it and started another campaign in Dar-Shalul with the intention of going back to old fashioned adventuring just for the sake of it in a campaign my players named "Fortune and Glory".

My plan for F&G was to do short story arcs for each character, but it's taken so long with COVID shut downs, some of us having COVID (and in my case twice) so we didn't play for six months. We started back this past April and have played four times. One of the group suggested going back to the prior campaign but I didn't want to because it was too fried and I hated the idea. Then I thought of just rebooting it, starting over at first level, and being more mindful of the things I put into the storyline. I'm actually pretty excited for it and a former player is collaborating with me on the do-over and I think I'm really going to have a good time. It's been a very long time since I ran a mostly urban campaign, so I really want to make sure I don't go overboard with stupid ideas and plots that lead to dead ends.

Sorry if this ran long, but not getting to game and hang out with my group is starting to get to me and I just needed to "think out loud" here. And if anyone has any thoughts or ideas about things they'd like to share or contribute hit me with 'em. I'd love to hear what folks think.

I just watched the series premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the newest Star Trek series (For those who don't know what this one's about it's the adventures of the Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike, who led the crew before James T. Kirk took command). I have to admit I still have a bit of a problem with the updated "21st century idea of what future stuff should look like" (I wish they'd just recreated the original sets from 1965, but that ain't happenin') and some of the Treknology should NOT exist at this point in Star Trek canon, but I still really, really enjoyed it. Much more than "Discovery" or even "Picard" because it actually FELT like Star Trek to me; kinda cheesy, kinda preachy in all the best ways the original series was. I think I'm going to like this.

I never really thought about it before but I was looking up a rule on something else last night and wandered down a rabbit hole. I was looking over the rules for magic items that use a spell trigger to work and those require that the user have that particular spell on their class's list. But items that use a command word don't seem to have that particular requirement. So, it has me wondering can anyone use a wand, regardless of class, as long as they know the command word? I may be misinterpreting something (which is likely) but having that avenue available for everyone in the party would help my guys out a lot.

Ebay had one but I missed the auction by several weeks and Noble Knight Games hasn't had one in stock in quite a while. Can anyone point me in the direction where I might find it?

Thanks!!

ZZ Top has been the same three guys since they first formed in 1969, one of only a tiny handful of legacy rock bands that never had a lineup change. Today their bassist, Dusty Hill, passed away at the age of 72, though I haven't come across any details yet.

Today is the 11th anniversary of the passing of Ronnie James Dio, a person whose music had more impact on me than just about any other heavy rock artist.

Long Live Dio. Long Live Rock and Roll.

There is a sort of heavy metal revival going on called The New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal. If you listened to metal in the first half of the 1980s you know most of it was cheesy, over the top, loud, often badly recorded, and just plain fun. The New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal is a movement to recapture the feel and sound of the "old days". Lots of the early heavy metal was based around fantasy themes. It leaves me misty-eyed and wistful for my old muscle car, the kick-ass stereo I had in it, the clothes, the girls...sigh...

Which brings me to this. There is a band called Gygax whose albums are all Dungeons and Dragons themed. They're everything you could hope for in a retro-metal band. Here is a link to their music on Bandcamp.

Eddie Van Halen died today, losing a long-fought battle with throat cancer.

What a tragic, awful loss.

Grant Imahara, of "Mythbusters" and "Star Trek Continues" has died at the age of 49.

If you've never watched Star Trek Continues, it's a fan made web series featuring 11 full length episodes that fill in some of the adventures the original Enterprise crew might have had if the series had lasted longer. It's an astounding tribute and work of love. Grant portrayed Sulu and did an outstanding job. I recommend folks check it out. Grant was terrific.

So I found this.. I also found it surprising that Starfinder was outselling Pathfinder 2e.

I'm asking these here because I'll get a quicker response than in the 3rd Party thread.

I have a friend who is wanting to learn to run Pulp Cthulhu and Deadlands but isn't sure what books she'll need. Do either of them use the Savage Worlds mechanic or will she need a different core rulebook for each of them? I'm not familiar with these games so I can't answer her questions. Thanks, everyone!

So I'm putting together the BBEG for my Halloween game. I'm adding the Implacable Stalker template to a Fighter 2/Rogue 3. The template is obviously based on the characters Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, but I can't remember if they had any specific vulnerabilities to anything. Anyone remember?

I posted this already but for some reason, it didn't show up, so if you see it twice ignore the first post.

One of my players asked me if the Acting skill could be used in place of Bluff because the two can be seen as trying to accomplish similar ends; to influence a listener's emotions or reactions.

What are your thoughts on this? I'm still trying to formulate mine.

One of my players wants to play an SoP Armiger in my game. My concern is will allowing him to play it, using the Spheres of Power system, clash with my regular PF1e game? He's a scrupulously honest player so I don't think he's trying to game me but I just wonder if anyone else has had just a class or two from SoP in their regular games and what the outcome was.

I recently saw an Antipaladin archetype someone had put together for an Antipaladin that specialized in spreading disease. It might have been in this forum. If anyone can point me to it I'd be grateful.

1) Remove a bullet from my wounded shoulder, then drop it into a tin cup. Maybe cauterize it with a hot poker.

2) I need a volunteer to die in my arms. I’ll go to your funeral, scheduled on a rainy day, of course. Go into self-imposed seclusion and grow a long beard.

3) Be coaxed out of self-imposed retirement for “one last job”.

I was looking at the rules for Piecemeal Armor for arms and discovered that among the light armors there is no armor bonus for choosing to wear them and plate arm pieces only offer a +1 bonus. So what's the use of choosing the lighter type armors? Looks?

Piecemeal Armor

I'm running a game this weekend where the players are caught up in a war between time-traveling NPCs and a time-traveling race, the Time Flayers (3PP from the Tome of Horrors Complete, published by Necromancer Games). One of the abilities of the Time Flayers is Temporal Displacement. The first part of the ability is below:

As a melee touch attack, a time flayer can send a creature a few seconds into the future. A DC 19 Fortitude save negates. The save is Constitution-based.

The affected creature returns to the Material Plane 1d4 rounds later. So what advantage to the Time Flayer does this represent? Is the Flayer able to prepare an attack on the person sent out of the Material Plane and jump his butt immediately upon their return?

Thanks in advance.

So I'm looking at putting together an adventure where the PCs encounter a Celestial, who for whatever reason, can't be with his love, the (opposite) of what he is. She loves him in turn and laments that they can't be together. But I'm not sure what creature she would be.

So let me get this right. Something falls from the sky over the rural heartland. Family adopts the baby found inside the alien spacecraft. The boy grows up and learns he has superpowers. Ok. So it's Superboy. But wait, this is Superboy if he was evil! How clever!

Brightburn

Would it have to be a wintry season for this creature to appear? Because I've got a pretty good adventure in mind but it's mid-spring in the campaign setting. I don't want to just jump ahead to the following winter, either.

So, whattaya think?

I could use some wisdom from all the sages here. I've got the following pieces of a game that I need to string together but can't seem to do so. I've tossed out three or four versions of my own ideas and can't seem to come to something useful. Here's what I have:

1. 4 1st level PCs, 1 2nd level PC

2. A just-robbed caravan

3. They follow the bandits' trail

4. They find a crumbling manor house in the woods

5. Inside is a dollhouse in perfect condition

6. Perfect tiny porcelain dolls of various creatures

7. If characters stay in the house until sunrise they turn into dolls

8. How to keep them in the manor house so the threat of such might occur

9. How do they get out of the manor house before sunrise

10. Would also like to throw in a beastie or two to keep things interesting.

Thanks in advance!

I've asked this question before but I can't find the thread, so here I go again. Can someone patiently explain to me how the Dread rules work again? I can't seem to make sense of them, and the sad thing is I know the answer is right in front of me and I just can't see it.

So thanks for your time and consideration!

Has anyone used this in your games? How did they work out? Were they easier to use or harder?
