Documentary on Tubi - "Satanic Panic"

I started gaming at the age of 21 in 1985, so pretty much the height of the Satanic Panic era. I seldom encountered anyone who tried to tell me about "the dangers" of Dungeons and Dragons, but I knew they were out there. One night during a game in my DM's dorm room a copy of the Jack Chick tract, "Dark Dungeons", came sliding under the door and across the floor. Then we heard someone running away down the hall. We never saw who the person was but we all got a pretty big laugh at how ludicrous it was.

This is a brand new documentary on Tubi (a streaming television app) and so far it's been pretty tame, but then again I'm only about 10 minutes in.

Well after the height of it, but late 90s some friends and I were having a game at the outlet to a drainage ditch. From 5 blocks over somesone shouts down the drain

"Hey, what are you doing?

"Playing dungeons and dragons

" Like sacrificing people to satan?

Someone goes to give the standard speach, I stop them, do my "LRR OF OMICRON PERSEI EIGHT! voice "DENNSTABULA PUNCTULABULA QUERCUS ALBA IN QUINHITUM DRACONIS!!"

And hear AHHHHHHHH ahhhhh AHHHHHHHHH ahhhh AHHHHHHHHH

At different volumes, as they ran screaming, towards and away from the drains up the road....

The Satanic Panic didn't really make to this side of the pond. In the 90s whenever I brought up D&D or roleplaying it would garner blank looks from people.

I live in Arkansas, part of the southern USA. I STILL get shocked or condescending looks from people if I mention it. I recently told someone my hobbies included roleplaying games, such as Pathfinder. Her response was, "Well, at least it isn't that evil Dungeons and Dragons game."

Into the 1990s and early 2000s there were still so called "experts" who traveled the school board and church circuits warning teachers and parents of the evils of Dungeons and Dragons. In reality they were just grifters preying on fear and ignorance. I've considered doing the same in the past...LOL It's apparently easy money for little or no effort.

Thought the same, but every time I remember I have standards.
