Kiri blinks out of view, almost stumbling on a serving tray loaded with dishes, but then remembering it's incorporeal. They glide smoothly though it. Hero point used, confirmed via PM

GM Screen:
Kiri's Stealth (M): 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (8) + 25 = 33 Swift Sneak, Sneak Adept

Kiri's Stealth (M): 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (16) + 25 = 41 Swift Sneak, Sneak Adept

The sound of slaughter above fades as the ghosts relive a more pleasant memory, now that they feel safe from an intruder who is not of their flock.

The priest intones… "Soon, the sun will eclipse. This moment will be the dawn of the Daughter of Chohar…"

Kiri reports what they have seen. The ghosts are incorporeal creatures who linger here.

GM screen:
Wisps's Religion (T): 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36
Chimwemwe's Religion (M): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36

While you are unable to identify exactly what kind of creatures these are, they exhibit traits similar to like troops of incorporeal spirits.

Perhaps there is a way to calm them, or to slip through among as one of them, without fighting them. They seem to have forgotten Kiri was even there, and are enjoying their feast at the moment, reliving a far more pleasant communal memory than their brutal slaughter at the hands of the Old Council.

Esi and chim share a tender farewell. Once again, they must part!

______

En route out of the city, you pass by the gates and a curious thing. One of the Jackal Guards is on gate duty, mottled like a bull frog and his skin is green. His face is stretched wide like a frog's.

He croaks sadly. O, Worknesh won't even give me a day off, let alone sick pay! Said that's what I get for getting tricked by a little rat-faced possum-thing. He scratches furiously. And now I somehow have fleas.

Imagine doing a hundred burpees in Worknesh's pit while you have itches in places you never knew could itch.

The jackal guard standing next to him chuckles. Heh. Every time you stop and scratch, a hundred more burpees… whatever the case, I don't think she really wanted to "help!" — or maybe she did, until you kicked her like that…

Before you go you provide a magical report to Zachva and Zanvi about the status of Mzali. The spiderlings are excited to hear about the progress you have made, and that people who are different can be allowed in the city without being hurt or made to feel unwelcome. They are going to work on a report for school about your efforts — if the Lore Speakers can get a mean sun god to open his city's gates, maybe spiderlings will be more welcome in Nataambu as well!

Enough!

Worknesh steps into the ring. If we continue to disgrace you, we will disgrace ourselves. The Jackal guard only takes up worthy challenges.

She shakes her head. Who knows what they are teaching you at that university, but you are excellent material for accountancy or librarianship.

Gnoll: you should never include allies in friendly fire. If you were in my ranks we'd make you eat a bucket of maggots for pulling a stunt like that.

Anadi: When your voice cracks it sounds like a Chihuahua trying to be a tiger. Try to embrace that "Blazing spider" a little more dearly if you want to actually help your comrades soar to new heights.

Inventor: try inventing some assistive devices better than that athletic armband trinket… perhaps a wheeled carriage for your shield, because your noodle arms clearly can't handle that heavy thing properly.

Finally she looks at Kiri. And you… I don't even know what to say. I don't even know what that was. But I'll never forget it.

Now get out of my sight before I throw up! She shoos you away.

____

On the way out some grinning jackal guards approach you.Gold coins jangle in large sacks they carry. They shove one of them into into your hands. That was hilarious! Some of our buddies bet you'd win, thinking the Maagambya's all high and mighty. Well, we bet them you're just a bunch of thinkers better at penmandhip then swordsmandhip. Thanks for proving us right, no one's better than Worknesh's Jackal Guards! He shoves one of the sacks into your hands. Here… buy yourselves some books or something! BWWWAAAHAHAHHAHA!

There is 5,000 gold in the sack. As you leave, the guards chatter about how Worknesh is very happy. She just loves lecturing people, and the guards think she'll be in a decent mood for days to come thanks to you.

Kiri slashes their target… but their second attack skitters across the shield.

Worknesh blinks and thinks, as she watches the agile cat prance about.

Are they faking it? They must have suspected I can easily see through their pathetic ruses, so there is no way I'd fall for it. Why even try? But they'd like me to think that, wouldn't they? After all Alrinkiri surely knows my own famous tactical acumen, which means it would be foolhardy to even try to trick me in the first place. So I should believe they're truly this clumsy. But, then again maybe that's what they WANT me to think, because they they know I know, and if they know I know then pretending to pretend would be a clever ruse indeed. Then again they've almost bested one of my Jackal Guards, which means they have studied, and in studying they must have learned that jackal guards are dangerous and deadly indeed, showing no mercy. Therefore, they would have put the idea of a combat ruse as far away from their mind as possible — otherwise, they might die. They've fallen for a classic blunder: "never get involved in a water war in Mzali"…

+1 ruse point

Akoril

Jumimo and Akoril discover an old propaganda pamphlet called "Order-072" about a group of special operations soldiers sent by the God-King behind Chelaxian lines to complete the eponymous order: first, exterminate a chelaxian general's administrative staff, and second, retrieve the spy codenamed "Butterfly viper." The documnent contains a training regiment in its appendix about the best way citizens can fight Chelaxians in hand-to-hand combat.

Jumimo and Akoril give it a try, and the noodle-armed scholar knocks the gnoll off his feet!

S: By leaving yourself open, you can take a -1 circumstance penalty to Athletics/acrobatics for the encounter

______
Chim

Chim locates the arthropod Ignaci needs… the Blue Ring Centipede, named for the painful marks that appear around the bite. This preceeds painful swelling followed by numbness. They carefully extract the venom from the creature's forcipules using a capillary tube that Ignaci also happens to have for other experiments that 100% totally do not involve poison-making because that, again, would be strictly against the rules.

After several hours, Ignaci produces a small vial. The peptides in this venom will numb your mind for a short while. Drink it just before the fight. It might even feel a little pleasant. Hmmmm… The alchemist wanders off, lost in thought. S; Stupefies 1.

______
Kiri

Kiri and Onyije spar and trade stories, Onyije gets Kiri so hyped up they can't even see straight! Their core fluctuates irregularly, and a vision rises in their mind's eye: desert dunes trempling as a colossal, mammoth-like thing with a stone castle growing out of its back emits an unearthly trumpeting from its tentacled mouth. It thunders across the dunes, kicking up clouds of sand. Ahead, a black sandstorm glittering with fiendish yellow eyes towers thousands of feet into the air, consuming the blue sky. An electric lash sizzles across their back, and Kiri darts ahead on all fours, heading toward that storm of annihilation. They see other automatons at their side… CS, -2 to attacks for the bout if you get hyped with ancient memories of terrible battles beforehand

______
Wisps

Wisps spends several hours with Anchor, exploring her worst fears. Tripping over Lucky Bones and injuring her, injuring herself, accidentally injuring others, getting found out that she's actually totally incompetent and getting tossed out of the Magaambya…

By the time it's all over Anchor feels better, but Wisps feels a little anxiety too! She keeps looking down to see if there's a banana peel to slip on and that her shoes are tied… CS, Clumsy 2!

Ashasar made an appearance in a 2E special. If you remember he was one of their leaders and apparently now he is "a planar specialist and liaison between the Pathfinder Society and the Concordance of Elements."

Perhaps they will appear in a future scenario, or have in the last season which I have not had time to play any of yet.

Hi there,

The concern is not a "conspiracy"; Drental commented about "Paizo internal people collaborating with contracted people" to vet Foundry modules.

In other words, Paizo people are spending work time fixing issues in one version and not another. That's great, but seems to be creating different branches of content because those changes aren't being broadcast to the community.

Whatever the case here, I do hope Paizo can leverage the effort used to create high quality Foundry modules find a way to keep things in stride for the whole community.

That said, both the PDF and the module should be recognized as legitimate and I don't think either has to somehow prove it. Both are made by Paizo internal people collaborating with contracted people and then published by Paizo.

Sure but one of those things is not like the other.

While each version is legitimate, perhaps Paizo can try to communicate changes from campaign leadership in a way everyone can access.

Ezgara clops over to a stall and haggles with the hapless vendor, babbling and fingering bits of black pudding from the nether recesses of his many wrinkles.

Some of that pudding is even from the ooze he just defeated.

After long minutes the merchant shoves fresh rags and a shiny rune across the counter, gagging and begging him to leave. NOW I buy my +1 Armor rune!

Ezgara's blind eye rolls around as he dashes off to change in an alleyway. Avaricious and stupid! Heee hee! I've only paid full price for these treasures! None are more perspicacious than Ezgara, who leaves pauperized capitalists in his wake. May their children starve!

Beaten down, the ancient div falls at last!

It's easy to destroy the last remaining div.

Investigating the rest of the decrepit theater, you find a Horn of Fog.

It is disturbing how easily a div could infiltrate regular society, and the role the Usij truly play in the world. But for now, the House of Oblivion's plans have been halted.

Word quickly spreads that something dramatic happened at the Riversong Theater, and Valls, Sefalia, and Dhia take advantage of that interest to advertise their upcoming anbarit. After the three recover and complete their work, crowds surge to attend the opening performance that takes place within a few weeks. The artists gratefully acknowledge the player characters at the beginning of the show. The Amity Cycle is an immediate hit, and the performance schedule is extended through the following season.

Word spreads and you have an opportunity to build your own reputations and find several employers looking to hire a group of up-and-coming adventurers. Xavier, given a spark of independence, opts to travel with you if you will have him.

For there is certainly more work to do. Zridi and the cultists had other contacts in the city and there is surely corruption in high places. Perhaps these investigations could lead whoever uncovers them out into the desert to the House of Oblivion itself. Who can say?

Here ends the enmity cycle! Please feel free to post a coda for your character if you like!

Ezgara's mouth hangs open as he stares up at the statue of the Inheritor, muttering his thoughts aloud.

They know nothing, Ezgara whispers. Mortal in Kantaria as a mortal, Iomedae ruled for a year and a day. A year, and then a day. They remember, they remember the time, the act. The tenth righteous act. Do they remember Exemplar? Exemplar, the old dog she found in a back alley? The ugly old mutt she cared for? Exemplar. Kindness to the old ugly broken thing. Not kicking or beating, no, not at all, never. Now, mutt's ghost guards Valor's Fastness.

His blind eye rolls around, landing on the fanatics. These ones, these would kick an old ugly dog. Beat it. Break it. Shall I waste words in an effort to instruct them? Will a friendly ghost guard their tomb for eternity? No, not at all, never. They will be forgotten. Dog-bitten. Flea-bitten.

Words are too precious to be wasted, hence my coy silence!

The old elf giggles to himself, then chokes and coughs on his own drool. It comes out like a bark.

Moralists slouching from alleyways. Rectitude hides in the dark, away from Iomadea’s eyes. Ezgara is more just than weak-minded fanatics. He stands in the light. None like him. None more pious than Ezgara. The light stands his shadow up. Standing it along the ground. Long is his shadow, donkey ears long. All can see. None can see his mind. Wisdom lies in this paradox. Do they see? The storm gathers. Bright light in the black cloud. Illuminate, incinerate. Will they see the light and slouch back to shadow, or are they so eager to splash the lady’s feet with fanatical blood?

As Ezgara mutters his thoughts aloud they take on a hypnotic quality, the folklorist’s shadow magically warps and grows taller and taller and grows long ears.

Tzeniwe and the spiderlings are already in the office; they've been talking to Ot. They turn and smile as you enter.

Congratulations on yesterday's exhibition. Be careful! Now that you have won two of three bouts, they will work even harder. I do hope these MACHA LESHIES, is that what they're called —

Zachva roll his eyes. MECHA!

Zanvi jumps up and down. YA YA MECHA LESHIES!

Yes. Well, whatever the kids are calling them, I hope they can be put to some good use. Perhaps if the city is ever attacked they can help us defend ourselves, but surely that will never happen. I cannot imagine what sort of terrible ginormous creature would require us to deploy these MOOCHA LESHIES.

He waves his hand. I digress. Our Anadi friends are gathered here because they are working on a project in the "Junior Lore Speaker" program, to help Andi become more accepted throughout the city here, and the world outside at large.

We want to be ourselves! says Zanvi.

And we want people to see who we are, not be scared of how we look! says Zachva.

Tzeniwe smiles at her children. And of course, this is also my own thesis. To help my family and my people be accepted everywhere.

Ot continues. We have a mission for you, something related to these efforts but not specifically about Andadi. It has to do with the scholar Izem who so recently fell into our lap — the one you saved from the Mzali warriors hunting him.

You see, while the city of Mzali is a place of great history and culture, its ruler is also xenophobic and seems intent on stymieing the city’s potential. All outsiders who enter the city are put to death. We want to stop this policy.

The Magaambya is not dedicated to revolution, assassination, or liberation of the subjugated. It is a place of learning, teaching, and charity.

The Magaambya can help Mzali and its people using peaceful methods. I propose a diplomatic mission to the city, one that can convince Walkena and his ruling Council of Mwanyisa to open the city to outsiders. With the city open to outside influence, the Magaambya — other groups — can enter the city and improve trade and the overall health of the citizenry. Dialogue can happen, and perhaps change for the better over time, Or at the very least, the opportunity for a seed to take root.

At the very least, if the Magaambya can put a stop to Walkena’s casual slaughter of non-Mwangi people from his draconian laws, it will save dozens, if not hundreds, of lives.

A worthwhile endeavor, no? I would like you to lead a delegation — chosen by yourselves — to achieve this mission. We have acquired one of Walkena's Seals, a medallion that will allow you to move about the city as if you were a citizen, though normally with an escort.

He hands you a sheaf of documents stamped with a golden sub-shaped seal. Here is that seal.

He also hands you a crystal. This crystal can transmit visual messages across long distances, allowing you to communicate with the people who hold its twin. I would like you to use this item to report in to Tzeniwe, Zachva, and Zanvi from time to time to tell them how your effort goes. They will be here safe and sound in Naantambu, but perhaps they can cite your findings in their own work — or offer you advice along the way should you need it! And, should you need outside assistance, Tzeniwe here can escalate as needed.

The task won’t be a simple one. Negotiations may require several weeks or even several months of work. Evil people lead Mzali. Each of them will be on the lookout for an opportunity for you and your delegation to slip up and break one of the city’s laws.

Another complication is the existence of the Bright Lions, a local revolutionary group dedicated to rising up against Walkena and liberating the city from his rule. The Magaambya has no official contact with the Bright Lions, but it’s likely that the group will try to contact your delegation, which might complicate matters. Officially, the Magaambya empathizes with the people of Mzali but is dedicated to a liberation of the city via diplomatic means. As such, the Magaambya forbids the delegation from working with the Bright Lions, no matter how appealing their cause.

You all know about Mzali in general. Spoiler below if you need a refresher.

About Mzali:
Mzali is an ancient temple city, the last remnant of a formerly great empire. Ages ago the Council of Mwanyisa overthrew the old monarchy, a line of sun-kings supposedly descended from the gods, and the empire crumbled under its new rulers. By the time of Aroden’s death and the Age of Lost Omens, the city of Mzali was nearly abandoned. Yet, the discovery of the hidden tomb of Walkena—a mummified child wrapped in the jeweled raiment of a sun-king and buried in a tomb filled with incredible treasures—brought a resurgence of interest to the ruined city, as it happened to coincide with a prophecy about Mzali’s return to greatness. Walkena was put on display and became a local sensation. Crowds flocked to the city to see the child and pay tribute, regarding him as a sign of Mzali’s past glory. As word of the fabulous riches, relics, and lavish parades featuring the jeweled mummy reached the nearby Sargavan colonists, an army of Sargavan soldiers came from Kalabuto to sack the temple-city’s wealth. But as they approached, the child-god Walkena awakened and unleashed his wrath. Walkena summoned fire from the sky to rain down upon the Chelaxian raiders, incinerating them all. This was 100 years ago.

Today, Mzali thrives under the total rulership of the undead Walkena. Its population has steadily grown since Walkena awakened, as Mwangi by the thousands arrived to join the child god’s mission to unite the Expanse and rid the land of colonizers. This new boom and prosperity came with a heavy price. The mummy Walkena is cruel, unfairly favoring his supporters and severely punishing those who question him, those who trade with non-Mwangi, and those who traffic with outsiders without his seal. For these offenders, a quick death would be a merciful reward, compared to Walkena’s punishments. Further complicating life in the temple-city, an insurgent group known as the Bright Lions work in the shadows to return the city to the people by overthrowing Walkena. Rumor holds that the new state of Vidrian, which recently rid itself of a colonist regime, supports the Bright Lions. Walkena’s elite Jackal Guard’s first priority is to break the Bright Lion organization, bring in its leaders, and turn the people of Mzali against them.

Mzali rests along the remote southern banks of the Pasuango River, deep in the southern plains of the Mwangi Expanse. A necropolis as much as a holy city, today’s Mzali rests atop the Mzali of yesteryear, whose burial mounds, ancient crypts, and pyramidal tombs lie just below the foundations of the current surface buildings. The immense city extends deep beneath the earth, with thousands of hidden shrines that contain the only remnants of Mzali history and culture from before Walkena’s priests edited it to fit their own needs. Explorers risk dangers (like the vicious karina birds) to find relics and treasures of lost ages in these subsurface tombs. Perhaps, someday, a way to defeat the powerful mummy-god tyrant Walkena will be among the discoveries returned to the surface.

Ramping back up…

With Abjal defeated, the remaining knights scatter. Jibni the Roper is gone as well… probably for the best.

______

After you're done exploring the area, it's time head back up top — the students are all too eager to escape this terrible prison.

However, Soomdevi and Noxolo linger near an unexplored passage. There's a secret way out, to the petrified forests and bone-dry rivers of the shadowlands. Soomdevi has his lace mask pulled over his face to hide his bloodshot eyes.

I can't go back. Soomdevi says. I need to figure some things out, who I am and why my father sent me on this path. He's… not a good person. Soomdevi grins, showing his vampire fangs. Whatever plans he had, they aren't in anyone's best interests. And I won't be Koride's pawn. Or whatever.

Noxolo shrugs. Ya. I'm like, going with. They'll never find me now. You may recall Noxolo is in the run from her past.

The dancer weaves and bobs in the shadows. Soomedvi pats Blinks on the head; the coal black hound pushes happily against his master's leg.

Take it easy.

They turn and walk down the passage, fading into black.

The creature completes the poem…

These five roads follow unspoken words
too subtle for the ears of mortal birds.
But follow, resolute and brave, find amity
For all of Thuvia's humanity.

The mechanical assistant explains, in verse, that this is the masterpiece Valls was composing, along with two close friends, a gnome who was a mechanic and a composer. They called their piece an "anbarit" and titled it "The Amity Cycle." It was intended to introduce a theme of unity across all Thuvia, which often sees itself as separate city-states.

In the back room are imprisoned artisans of various kinds but none of the ones you seek.

Each has a similar story: they worked in the outdoor market of Lamasara doing simple drawings, reciting poetry, or dancing. Two weeks ago, they were approached by a charming woman named Zridi who flattered them and discussed a project she wanted help with. She paid each artist handsomely for their time and promised greater rewards if they would allow her to become their patron. She told them to go to the Fickle Wind where they would work in comfort and privacy. When they arrived, however, they quickly discovered the arrangement had been a lie. They were brought belowdecks and ambushed by the scrapborn and someone named Seddek. They haven’t seen Zridi since the meetings in the marketplace, but they’re certain she’s involved in their predicament.

During the last 2 weeks, they were put to work on a new kind of production mixing various forms of art called an anbarit. They received pages of instructions as well as a direction in which they were supposed to revise the work, create costumes, or design sets. The artists can all tell that the theme of the original production had to do with peace and unity between the five city-states of Thuvia, while their revisions were supposed to weave in themes of distrust, suspicion, violence, superiority, and fear. Seddek called the "Enmity Cycle."

Seddek had gathered up the pages they produced just yesterday, and since then, the imprisoned artists have languished here. They overheard Seddek mention that he would be headed to “the composer’s house” next.

Addo's eyes go blank. He bleats like a goat. Baaaaa…

Abjal turns to his classmate. Addo you were a lamb for the slaughter all along… I was merely waiting for you to finish chiseling the stone for the ritual.

He uses his reaction to make an arcane gesture, the jagged Ghol-Ghan runes etched into the living stone floor glow crimson. The shadowy ghost of a mad cyclops rises above Addo, whose bleating turns to an animalistic scream as the shadowy creature's claws tear his throat out. Addo's blank mask tumbles to the ground. Hot blood from the dead fetchling fills the channels of the ritual circle.

Abjal laughs. I'll make you watch your students partake in this ritual before you have a go, you weak pathetic Magaambyans.

Doesn't seem like ours have either.

A few tried out but had a difficult time onboarding (school items, downtime), struggled with more prescriptive rules of Org Play (can;t build high level PCs, book ownership, no evil pc's), and felt the scenarios were too strictly structured when compared to AL.

Would it be possible to host these on downloads.paizo.com so we don't have to go through the checkout process?

One click for the PDF sure would be nice, especially for new players.

Once you explore more you notice the town is full of tension. People seem afraid. You hear villagers have been disappearing from the streets.

You find an old woman lingering near the market; she seems to trust you. Father Heveril resides in the Hall of the Watchful Ibex, a decrepit old temple to Erastil. Avoid them spooky knights if you see 'em. They comes and goes, and no one knows how. Like ghosts. An' you be gentle with old Father Heveril. He's old and sad ever since Erastil abandoned him. That must've been, oh, twenty years ago or longer, when I was a young one. Anyway he still keeps to the temple after all those years, to care for all us here in Jula as best he can. At least, when he has the energy. Gets lost in the doldrums he does. The sadness, it cripples him some days. In any case, he's all we got for a healer or spiritual leader in this place. We don't have much. not like we used to.

______

You make your way to a lonely old temple on a hillside. The old doors creak on their hinges.

Inside, you hear a man speaking.

Little one. It does not matter. How many times must I tell you? Sweeping away a few cowebs is pointless when all of Jula is doomed. The shadows here grow too long.

BINJI HELP!

Hmm. Are you a messenger from the gods? Erastil himself? You appeared in a puff of green smoke. A sign?

BINJI HELP!

Is Old Deadeye telling me to start somewhere, even if it's such a small thing as a coweb even in a corner?

BINJI HELP!

No matter. I did what I could, little one. All for naught. It wasn't enough. It never was. It never is. Please, stop sweeping. Let the cowebs cover this place.

BINJI HELP!

I beg you. Go back to the Summerlands. Tell Erastil he has forsaken us too long. We are beyond saving.

BINJI HELP!

The man sighs. You know, this place hasn't been swept in years. I don't even have a broom.

As someone who worked very hard on this for the VO community I would be sad to see it go away forever. So, I will do it myself.

Here is the official VO Handbook made by the VO Taskforce in 2022, with the input of the global community of VOs. This was created by myself, VO Joel Hager, and VO Numbat.

For anyone who is not familiar with this document, it contains the following key sections:

1. Introduction
2. Venture Officer Structure
3. Organizing Local Events
4. Organizing Conventions
5. Reporting & Data Collection
6. Dealing with Crises and Problem

While I am no longer a VO I hope this helps someone out there.

Thank you.
