Mirri scoops up one of the goblin bows, a handful of arrows, and that surprisingly well-made leather jacket.

"It's not stylish, but this is good work. Gimme a second."

Mirri will find somewhere out of the way where she can stash the leather jacket to come back for it later.

Stealth to hide it: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 (+1 is from Thief edge b/c we're in a city)
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Ace: 1d6 ⇒ 1 +1 from Thief = 8

That done, she hustles to catch up with the team.

Given that our monk is sprinting there, I am guessing we are taking the direct route.

Mirri is booking it for as fast as her little legs will take her.

If he trusts her enough to have her be his assistant, I think he would trust her enough to let her know the truth of his ancestry. After all, she's bound to see him without his hex up at some point.

Kheyji puts her hands on her hips. "Just tell them the truth! We don't want her junk and they cannot have one of our mammoths. If they want to hang around and try their luck with the burning idiots chasing us, that's their business. But our following is to cross unmolested, and we will defend ourselves if this group attempts otherwise."

Serenrae is a goddess of truth, so Kheyji's preference is straightforward.

Mirri listens with rapt attention as Sheriff Hemlock talks about the lost church. So that’s what happened here, she thinks. It seemed odd to build a cathedral out of the way out here, but I guess it makes sense if they are replacing something they lost.

She guffaws at Cyrdak Drokkus' antics and makes a mental note to check out that play.

As far as the food goes, she is mostly full on pie (mostly), so she is only able to sample the foods rather than feast. Alas, she does not get the chance to try Ameiko's salmon, but she does manage to snatch a cup of the mead, which is quite good.

All in all, she has a pleasant day amongst the crowds and sights in Sandpoint. This. This is why I travel.

When things get chaotic

When the screaming starts, Mirri gets small. She slides under the stage and tries to stay low and quiet. In her experience, the big folk very rarely look down or up when trouble starts, and that's where she makes her living. She peeks out between the boards to see whatever she can, but her focus is on avoiding notice.

The bird perches on the lip of a roof outside a tavern, where a gnome woman with purple, spiky hair emerges, a cup full of something pink in her hand. She takes a sip and starts walking, bouncing along jauntily and humming to herself.

She wears dark brown and black leathers with a katana, of all things, strapped on her back, the grip sticking up over one shoulder.

She smiles at people who pass by. At one point, she sees a group of children, sets down her cup, and pulls out a silver coin.

With a flourish, she makes the coin disappear! Then, she pretends to find it behind a little girl’s ear. She flips it, catches it, palms it, twirls it, and puts on a little show, all with just a coin.

At the end, she flicks the coin in the air towards one of the kids, but it slows and stops before landing! The coin rotates a couple of times and then flies back to the gnome’s hand, where she makes it vanish with a grin.

The children clap, and she flips each one a silver, this time letting the kids catch the coins.

The kids flock her and she laughs, grabbing her cup and going along as they pull her towards a puppet show where a tall looking, bald human stands enjoying the festivities surrounded by yet more kids.

The bird, having already seen the puppets, takes wing and flies on.

Check out savaged.us for a Savage Worlds character builder.

a) What is your concept? Give me a one or two sentence description of your character.

Jason, aka Afterthought, is the failed sidekick of a B-list hero. After a couple of years on the streets with his mentor, fighting the good fight, he was threatened by one too many psychopaths in clown makeup and hung up his tights.

His mentor didn’t survive long enough to stand up on the stage with Champion for the V’Sori betrayal: the old man died in one of the early battles against the Fins.

The day after his mentor died, Afterthought woke up to find a ring hovering above his bed. His mentor’s ring (and source of power) seemed to be calling Afterthought back to the life. To the fight. To the heroics.

Afterthought ignored that call. He kept the ring but hid it, keeping himself far from the fighting, until the V’Sori took Star City. Then, it became survival of the fittest, and he dug out the ring and did what he needed to stay alive.

b) Do you have, or will you pledge to get if selected, access to: The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rule book (AKA SWADE), The Super Powers Companion Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (AKA SPC3), and the Necessary Evil Players guide? I can help if you are not sure where to get these.

Already got em. No problem here.

c) What do you look like? Hair/eye color? Height and Weight? Costume? Think of your mug shot/wanted poster.

Afterthought is exceptionally ordinary. He stands about 5’ 10” at a buck 60. His eyes are brown and his hair is black.

When he is in costume, he wears black combat fatigues, like you could get at any army/navy surplus store. He wears what looks like a paintball mask when he fights. Think Netflix Daredevil in season 1 vs. when he gets the spiffy super suit.

d) What can you do? What separates you from the masses? Brains? Training? Acidic blood? Magic tea cozy?

Afterthought wears a magic ring that enhances his physical abilities. Speed, strength, toughness, the whole lot. He can also heal wounds that should kill normal people. And thanks to his time trying to make it in the big leagues, he's had some training, to boot.

e) What have you done? What separates you from a random survivor? Describe a typical crime. There is a reason you could not be at the welcoming ceremony with Champion. If you are a hero give me an example of your heroism and tell me why you were not incinerated for standing up for Earth?

Make no mistake: Afterthought was trained as a hero, but he sees himself primarily as a survivor.

His most common crime is a protection scheme. In his territory, he collects from the local residents and shops and comes running when someone harasses his people. Of course, for those who don't pay, things can get a little dicey.

f) How familiar are you with Savage Worlds as a system? Note familiarity is NOT required. It is not a highly complex system but it does have its rough points. I and the other players are more than happy to lend a hand.

Very.

g) What have you been doing lately? How have you spent the last two years under V’sori occupation? The campaign starts the players as prisoners of the V’sori invaders. Were you a prisoner? If so what was the V’sori attitude to you? Indifference? Interest & Interrogation? Experimentation? How long were you in captivity? If you remained free how did you manage that? Friends? Luck? Blending in to the general population?

Afterthought has been living in the shadows, stealing whatever he can whenever he can and generally using his training to stay below the radar. He was not captured by the V'sori, because they would not have known to care that he existed.

h) The game is largely set in Star City and you will start there. Is this your home? If so how long have you been active as a meta-human in the City? Do you have family or friends here? If home is somewhere else where is it and is getting there important to you?

Star City is home. Afterthought was active for a couple of years maybe 8 years or so ago, but got out of the game. He's only been back at it since after the V'sori takeover, probably only six to 8 months.

i) What have you seen in the world? Detail a hero or a villain or an ordinary person you have ran into, worked with, fought, or just heard about. Maybe a member of Alpha Squadron you tangled with. Maybe a criminal mastermind you worked for. Maybe a taxi driver or whoever ran the newsstand near your old lair. Make them interesting. Think of yourself as pitching a 1 or 2 issue special series for the Necessary Evil comic book we are all creating.

In the aftermath of the V'sori occupation, Jason has befriended an orphan kid named Damian. Damian is a hard case, eager to fight and way too vocal about it, who squats wherever he can. On occasion, Damian has crashed on Jason's couch, and Jason knows better than to ask too many questions. He finds himself going out of his way to check in on the kid, who has fallen in with a rough crowd. Jason sees a lot of himself in Damian, except Damian is a lot angrier than Jason was at that age. Having your world occupied and your sense of self-realization taken away will do that to you though, Afterthought figures.

j) What is the greatest thing in life? What is your desired end state/goal. Tell me what is important to you.

Afterthought just wants to get back to where he can hang up his costume again and go back to sleeping in on Saturdays and watching cartoons. He is not, at his heart, a complicated man.

k) You are a member of the Omega resistance movement led by Dr. Destroyer (Think Marvel’s Dr. Doom). What do you think about this? Are you a willing member? Blackmailed? Given the choice of joining or being sold out to the V’sori to provide a distraction? Maybe you were part of a cell that was destroyed? Have you met Dr. Destruction?

This is a continual head trip for Jason. Dr. Destruction is one of the scariest people in the world, and suddenly Afterthought is Destruction's errand boy. He has not personally met Dr. Destruction, and is not keen to. He got roped into the Omega movement because one of Dr. Destruction's goons started making a lot of trouble in Jason's territory and threatened to tip off the V'sori if Jason didn't decide to help.

I am away on vacation, but I have Brias' backstory updated. I have his gear mostly selected (I used only about 1/4 of his funds on potions) and will get that punched in on his sheet when I get a free half hour, here.

Okay, Brias' profile is now his character sheet and he should be ready for your consideration, GM. I need to equip him, but I would prefer to hold off on that step until knowing he's in the game and knowing how you would like to handle him brewing his own potions.

I revised his backstory to more tightly integrate with the happenings in the Shudderwood:

Backstory:

Brias was born of a loving union between his father, an orc deserter from Belkzen worn beyond his years, and his mother, a powerful human witch of Kellid descent. The two met in the wilds, as one might expect, and found in each other kindred spirits. Over time, his mother taught his father witchcraft, and the two of them used their magics to survive in seclusion.

Brias was witchborn, inheriting magic on both sides, and it was only a matter of time before he attracted a familiar of his own. He named his new companion simply "Fox," delighting in the simplicity of a name that also described the thing named. Fox was a fox, the fox as far as Brias was concerned, and his young mind was proud of his cleverness. Once Brias matured, he could not bring himself to change the name. And so Fox remained Fox.

Brias yearned to make a difference in the world, and in the Shudderwood, where werewolves prowl the night, no one turns away a healer, so he made his way there. He set himself up in a small hut and treated the humans who came to see him. To avoid the prejudices so prevalent in Ustalav, he made judicious use of the disguise hex to appear as a normal human. Interestingly, he chose a face of Kellid descent, connecting him to his mother and helping him blend in with the other witches who make the wood their home (few though they may be).

Whenever he could, he helped out any non-humans who came his way. Those in the know may have heard of a loosely affiliated network of folks who would help non-humans in need, and Brias came to find himself in the network. Over a couple short years, he helped a lot of people.

Lately, though, the Shudderwood felt more on edge to Brias than usual (if that was even possible). He'd heard rumors through his network of people walking around with the whispering way on their lips, and he knew from his father that could only mean trouble. He took to traveling with his father's old falchion strapped on tight, just in case. Unless the tension broke, and soon, he feared something darker than werewolves might upend the home he worked so hard to build.

I am coming into this only knowing what was in the Carrion Crown Player's Guide and your intro, so if I missed any details, plese let me know and I will revise as needed.

I ended up switching to the Elemental patron, which changed up my prospective spells a bit. If I need to make adjustments to better fit the party before beginning play, I'm happy to.

Thanks!

Great! I look forward to your submissions. :)

Colorfoot, I like the concept, and it fits well with the suspicious and prejudiced culture of Ustalav. I do have one concern that should be addressed. You probably have this in mind already, but if not, I would suggest that you go in with the idea that your orc witch would decide to be honest with the party at the start. Maybe the witch recognizes the party is no ordinary bunch of locals, afraid of their own shadows. Perhaps finding common cause with them would also lend itself towards some trust. Otherwise, I don't expect it would work out if your character decided to deceive them. On a practical level alone, the deception would be short-lived: one of the party members has a really high perception and is very suspicious and wary, so you'd need, like, over +35 in Disguise to reliably keep up the illusion.

No problem, there. I am a firm believer in being above board with other players/characters during character creation. And his hex only keeps him disguised for his level in hours, so I'm pretty sure the group would have figured out the secret very quickly if he had tried to keep it.

Kheyji, seeing the Burning Tusks lay into her friend, growls. "Sister, brighten Hurik's inner fire!"

Rackets aren't archetypes, so you're fine! They're actually called "subclasses", though most people just call them, well, rackets, in the rogue's case.

Basically, an archetype is a set of feats that you can only take after taking a special dedication feat. They're usually totally distinct from the class you have--a barbarian could take the Ritualist archetype, while a wizard could take the Fighter multiclass archetype. Once you take a dedication feat, you have to take two feats in that archetype before trying out any other archetypes.

A subclass is a choice from a set of options a given class gives you. Like, eldritch trickster rogue, wild order druid, illusionist wizard. It's similar to how archetypes worked in PF1, where you pick one and you stick with it for the rest of the run.

For sure; I only ask because the eldritch trickster racket gives a dedication feat.

"You've done well, Little Sister," Kheyji thinks she hears Sister Cinder say. "You are dedicated. But your fire is small. Let us change that."

Sister Cinder's outline holds out a hand, and Kheyji's entire body begins to burn. She can feel the blood flowing through her veins, and it scalds. Her stomach, lungs, heart, all of her insides feel like they have turned to ash. Her skin begins to blister, as it did once when she was young, and the entire world is only pain.

She awakens screaming, waking up the others in her tent. She is drenched in sweat, but not fire.

In the days that follow, though, she finds herself changed. Her inner determination, her anger, burns hotter than before. It's a bit easier to lose control Intimidation skill gained from her choice of bloodline.

And she finds the fire comes easier to her, now. Without meaning to, she conjures it, only now she can hold it in her hand without it burning her.

Second Strike: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 for potentially 1d66 + 3 ⇒ (34) + 3 = 37 bludgeoning. Edit: that would be 1d6 ⇒ 6 +3 damage, much as I would like to do 1d66 damage. :)

Hey! That's Webny's first natural 20 in a fight! If I'm understanding correctly, that should make her first Strike into a critical success (unless this thing has an insanely high AC) and double her 4 bludgeoning damage to 8. She doesn't get a critical specialization effect at level 1, though. Right? Did I miss anything? She has low-light vision, so she shouldn't need to make a flat check to hit, correct?

Oh, and belatedly, I'm sorry to see you folks go. It was fun playing with you and I appreciate everyone's patience with me as I learn the system!

Okay, Webny's number is 2398621-2002. This was the first time I've used Webny in anything, so her starting XP, Rep, and Gold are all whatever complete newbies start with.

For downtime, she'll try to organize a friendly, informal tournament to pass the time and relieve some stress.

Sorry I’m the hold up! Tonight is my Roll 20 game night, so I’ll get on it soon.

Thank you all; it’s much appreciated. As if she knew my heart’s turmoil, Webny went ahead and got a natural 20 on her very next roll. I’ll take it.

Webny steps up to the mural to examine it.

She is surprised to find that some of the line work looks familiar. ”Wait,” she says, ”does that shape look almost like an arena to anyone else? And, look there, that’s a drain. All decent, permanent arenas have them so the workers can more easily clean the floor after battles. In more barbaric times, the drains would even catch the blood of slaughtered combatants.”

She continues to examine the mural and finds more evidence of ritualized violence throughout. ”These guys did not mess around…” she mutters absently as she looks over the images.

Webny approaches as well, curiosity getting the better of her.

I’m having a little trouble keeping my token inside the lines because I do most of my pbp on my iPad and the touch interface is a little awkward , but she’s more or less within the borders of the square where I want her.

Webny follows Rangi up, impressed by her orcish companion's deftness in scaling the tower. She finds it tough to find purchase herself, and is grateful he threw down a rope for the rest of them.

Once up the wall, she attempts to balance on the precarious surface.

And, like Rangi, she observes the tower to see how useful it might be in a fight (or how many fights it may have already seen).

@GM Will do! I was worried that it had taken me too long to post and that I had missed the opportunity to make the athletics roll to climb the tower.

Webny holds her peace during the odd grilling the Decemvirate representatives give and then shoots bewildered looks at her teammates. ”I’ve been in fights less intense than that,” she mumbles. ”That’s not normal, right?”
