Play a slime, mimic, demon, nymph, and more with Battlezoo Ancestries: Year of Monsters!

Tuesday, January 24, 2023

Hi everyone, Roll for Combat Director of Game Design Mark Seifter here! 2023 has already been a wild year for Roll for Combat and the entire RPG industry, but it’s also the start of something exciting: the Battlezoo Ancestries: Year of Monsters! With Year of Monsters, you can play a creative monster ancestry each month of 2023, plus receive a final compilation book as a capstone with additional content!

The ancestries are demons, gremlins, intelligent weapons, dungeons expanded (you can get the original dungeon ancestry for free at https://battlezoo.com/), oni, nymphs, doppelgangers, minotaurs, slimes, sthenos, mimics, and sidhe. Each ancestry will receive at least twice as much content as a standard-size ancestry, such as those presented in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook or Pathfinder Lost Omens Ancestry Guide, and some of them have been expanded to add versatile heritages, double-length content, and more surprises!

The Year of Monsters subscription comes with:

  • Thirteen ancestry PDFs—one for each ancestry, and then the expanded Year of Monsters Compilation book at the end of the year.
  • The Foundry VTT module, which will automatically update itself 13 times with the latest ancestries throughout the year.
  • Thirteen ancestry files for import into Pathbuilder 2e.
  • No less than 21 digital assets for each ancestry.
  • A private invitation to join our design team for special design streams, one per month for each ancestry, and have your ideas heard as we incorporate them into an expanded compilation at the end of the year.

In addition to everything listed above, you can get the final compilation book in hardcover at https://battlezoo.com/.

Finally, while we still recommend the full experience with Foundry VTT integration and special design streams where you can join the design team for the ancestries and have us add your ideas, we also want to make Year of Monsters available and affordable to as many people as we can. To that end, we’ve worked with one of the Pathfinder 2e discord moderators, ink, to put out a special club aimed at new players and old who would like just the PDFs and digital assets of Year of Monsters for a lower price: the Battlezoo Digital Monsters Pledge. The more people who pledge, the less expensive the Digital Monsters Pledge will be. Simply fill out the form here to commit to the pledge!

Battlezoo Ancestries: Year of Monsters will allow you to play as a demon, gremlin, intelligent weapon, dungeon, oni, nymph, doppelganger, minotaur, slime, stheno, mimic, and sidhe

Battlezoo Ancestries: Year of Monsters lets you play the monster with a creative monster ancestry each month of 2023, plus a final compilation book as a capstone with additional content!

I’m excited to have you join us for this adventure as we explore what it means to be a monster in a world full of diverse ancestries!

Never realized I wanted to play as a dungeon until now!

I still can't get over how funny it is that all the dungeon pictures look like backgrounds for a character that is conspicuously missing from the foreground.

I'm personally incredibly excited for Intelligent Weapons, Dungeons Revisited, Nymphs, and Mimics!

It all looks lovely. I just wish we could import it into Organized Play! But alas, I can only play a mimic in a home game! Still this is a very tempting array, Mark.

Huzzah for your creativity!

Hmm

I just downloaded and committed to a pledge! Looking forward to trying some out in some home games.

Very cool. I imagine how fun would play being a slime, intelligent weapon or a mimic! kkkkkk

Now I can make an Intelligent Sword summoner being used by a cat girl as Eidolon! kkkkkk

The Slime PDF has come out already, and it looks like loads of fun. You can make yourself composed of different things, do silly grapple stuff, and replicate yourself to a limited degree, among other stuff I'm probably forgetting.

You can play an intelligent weapon that has a cat girl wielder even before you factor in a class. Then go Magus to get closer!

Are you going to get Jason Bulmahn to contribute to the Minotaur ancestry?

Currently Intelligent Weapons are way limited spell-casting capabilities. For this char the Intelligent Weapon ancestry with an Eidolon fits better the concept.

Gonna buy this when our next paycheck comes in. :3

So many options for us!

Also the blog post is accidently dated for last year.

edit: Also does anyone know how long the sale on battlezoo is?

Are these books only available buying the complete set, or will I be able to buy specific ones I want when they release?

Is it / will it be possible to pick up individual ancestries? I am interested in the slime, but not so much in the others.

Let me know if you want me to run Extinction Curse for a Mimic...

:)

I was told that you could make a half-dragon character from one of the books, which one would that be?

That was a project from last year. I believe it simply called Battlezoo beastiary Dragon.

I could be wrong

Battlezoo Ancestries: Dragons. The half-dragon option is Draconic Scion, a versatile heritage, but you can also play a dragon.

I know we at least don't currently have any plans to sell them separately. For one thing, the Foundry module is all one module that auto-updates as each ancestry is added, so there would be complications with splitting things up.

The pdf-only pledge is until some point in the first week of February when Doppelgangers launch.

So the long and short of this is that, since I have no clue how to play this game on a computer and thus don't need Foundry assets, if I pledge I can get the Battlezoo ancestries for a lower price? Neat!

Unfortunate, but makes sense. Dropping a hundred bucks on this is a bit steep for my circumstances but the pdf pledge getting down to fifty looks pretty guaranteed so I'll grab that to sate my mimic-related curiosity.

I was a backer... and the Slimes alone made it worth it. I can't wait to see the next ones.

I'm thinking about buying this with some friends. Could we share the 21 digital assets and Pathbuilder ancesry files or not? I assume the Foundry module generates a unique code per purchase?

While the pdfs and foundry code will be just yours, I think the Pathbuilder files will be freely distributable period, and if I recall the digital assets are for you to use as you need at your table (other than weird things like commercial uses, etc, etc) so if you wanted to use them in a shared environment, I think that would be fine. I can check with Stephen.

Clearly I'm at step 2 of the winning formula:

Step 1: Join Pledge
Step 2: Convince others to join Pledge.
Step 3: Get to Maximum Pledge Size
Step 4: Ask Mark Seifter nicely to allow pledge level purchases early so we can all look at slimes before February.
Step 5: Wait patiently for Feb drop of doppelgangers
Step 6: Turn into Mark Seifter doppelganger
Step 7: ?
Step 8: $Profit$

I'm thinking of an all doppelganger party. Nobody realizes that anyone else is a doppelganger. They think they're being sneaky and infiltrating a group of other races. Wackiness ensues. At one point they try to impersonate each other, and they still have the same party. A impersonates B, B impersonates C, C impersonates D and D impersonates A. Nobody says anything because they don't want to give away that they're impersonating someone else.

Or there's a sword, in a chest, in a dungeon, but all three are PCs. It's like a Turducken party.

For me, the $50 right now is a bit much... I wish I had enough to make the pledge. Looks like it's up to 187 already, so it looks good for all of you that pledged.

It's over 200, so it maxed out for those who are interested!

So, I'm new to Paizo, and some of you showing me around Pathfinder 2e and so on told me about BattleZoo because I mentioned I'm a fan of Pokemon. Y'ALL. You have created "Eldamon" -> BattleZoo/Eldamon :) Now you have somehow figured out these monster ancestries. And that art, ye gods! I'm so stupid happy to put my hard earned money into this gorgeous set of products. Rock on.

I was going to back this initially but was told the compilation would not be forthcoming, so I cancelled my pledge. it looks like this decision has been reversed.

Will the Year of Monster stuff also be released on https://pf2easy.com like the Dragon ancestry was? It's really convenient for sharing with my group.

I bought the package. Quite pleased with the Slime. Especially since I was surprised to see some stuff that is like being Plural.

I think my most anticipated ancestry is the Oni. I always loved them. I suppose it is a bit boring for a favorite next to slimes, mimics, and dungeons, but whatever.

- Use the "sign the pledge" link in the article above.

- Do not close out of the confirmation page when you submit.
- Click the link that you're given.
- You can buy the PDF-only pack from there. (It won't apply the discount until the second page of checkout, so don't worry if it doesn't show initially, but it should show before you hit to submit with payment details filled out.)
