The Abomination Vaults Comes to 5E!

A Complete Campaign with Dungeons—and Dragons!

I’m Ron Lundeen, the development manager responsible for the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path. At Paizo, we have a lot of confidence in our adventures. We’ve been crafting phenomenal campaigns for many years, and the Pathfinder Second Edition rules have only helped us make more. The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path has been one of our best campaigns, and our fans love it. But a lot more gamers all over the world play the newest edition of the world’s oldest RPG, and we wanted to show them how great Paizo’s Adventure Paths can be, too.

Once we realized what a hit we had in the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path, we started a Pathfinder Second Edition compilation and a 5E conversion at roughly the same time. James Jacobs, Vanessa Hoskins, and Stephen Radney-MacFarland had done phenomenal work creating the three individual Adventure Path volumes. The story, maps, and art were already in place. So while I was compiling the Pathfinder Second Edition version, I brought in David N. Ross, a 5E expert, to convert the entire campaign from its 1st-level beginning all the way to its 11th-level conclusion. This conversion is a rules overhaul from the ground up. We streamlined all the combat encounters, adjusted all the treasure, adjusted all the XP awards, and loaded the book with tons of 5E stat blocks.

This isn’t the first time we’ve adapted one of our adventures to a different game’s rules. It’s not even the first time we’ve adapted one of our campaigns to the 5E rules: that would be the Kingmaker Adventure Path. But while the Kingmaker 5E rules cover an extensive bestiary of monsters and NPCs, the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path gives you a complete 5E campaign in a single book! This hardcover is the only thing you need to run this campaign at your gaming table—from a complete gazetteer of the town of Otari to every one of the ten dungeon levels beneath the eerie Gauntlight lighthouse. There are doors to be kicked down, loot to be plundered, side quests to fulfill, people to help, and even a few dragons to fight.

One of the things I loved about putting this book together was all the extra art we could include. Pathfinder Second Edition players already know what grothluts, gogiteths, and shulns are. We have those monsters illustrated in our Pathfinder Bestiary. But 5E players don’t know what they are, so I packed in a lot of our art to show them off.

Of course, all these new critters need 5E stats, and the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path provides them. This hardcover is a great 5E resource, even if only as a great big book of new monster and NPC stats. Shulns for everyone!

But the key, as always, is the story. Despite the differences in rules, the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path is still the tale of the sleepy coastal town of Otari, the Gauntlight’s dread light, and the spiteful ghost who lurks deep underground. Heroes must explore the dungeon, solve its mysteries, and help the helpless. That’s a story I love telling in any rules system.

Being the forever Pathfinder GM for my group, this 5e conversion may be the first chance I get to actually play in Golarion when our group's 5e DM runs this at the conclusion of our current campaign. Well done Paizo!

Liberty's Edge

I can't seem to find it listed as a product for sale. Same with the Kingmaker 5E. Are these available for sale on Paizo's website?

Looking forward to bringing the good new of PF2e to 5e players. Superior adventure writing in a familiar system to pique their curiosity and get them to consider another system--then the superior rule design keeps them hooked!

The Kingmaker hardcover has suffered some severe delays, and is not out yet. According to the most recent information provided to backers, it should be releasing in September.

This is a really cool endeavor. I hope it brings more people over to check out 2e, but in top of that, I hope it brings Paizo a share of that 5e revenue.

There's not enough content for that. Maybe if they decide to regularly publish 5E content, but two items are currently not enough.

Correct. Paizo has not pledged to produce more 5e content.

I will buy literally anything Paizo puts out if it includes Golarion + 5e. I've already converted Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne for my own tables, and we're just a few sessions away from the climax of Curse of the Crimson Throne! Then I'm on to converting Shattered Star and then Return of the Runelords.

After all those four, I'm taking a vacation from DMing for a bit (that's totally a lie, I'm already thinking about what to run after Return of the Runelords, and its still a toss up in my mind).

Thank you for your enthusiasm. What I expect will happen is that Paizo will evaluate how sales of this and the 5e Bestiary goes and then evaluate next steps. Personal testimonies on the forums will be less persuasive than sales data. I think we are more interested in showing 5e players the quality of our adventures as evidence that, when combined with the deep character customization of Pathfinder, you will ultimately have a better experience if you play them natively. We are less interested in creating a parallel product line. But time will tell.

I don’t think that’s appropriate for the forums here.

Some people like Cookies and Cream, others like Rocky Road, some hate ice cream all together and eat pie. There's plenty of options for the gamers of the world to eat their dessert of choice.

It's completely appropriate if that's being argued as a reason to convert APs.

I'm in the middle of converting RotRL to 5e... in FVTT. It's ... interesting. If "Abomination Vaults" were instead RotRL, 5e or not, I'd get it. If it were RotRL in 5e, I'd get it to port to FVTT. RotRL in 5e FOR FVTT would put me out of work entirely. I'd prefer working my normal day-job anyway. I just want to enjoy the RotRL adventure, and having my players on Vancouver Island, PNW, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico, FVTT is simply a requirement for us.

So... yeah. I'm not sure what the planned program is for "5e + FVTT" development is. I'm excited to *see* Abomination Vaults... one version for 5e, one version for FVTT... but that isn't where I am at the moment.

https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?391603-Rise-of-The-Runelords-(Ro tRL)-Converted-to-D-amp-D-5e-(WIP) is what I have to book 3 of RotRL, so ... I *really* would prefer to keep my day job that actually pays. :(

I know it's an unpopular opinion on these boards, but I'd love to see this back-converted to PF1. Literally no one I know plays PF2 - everyone either kept playing PF1, switched to 5E, or found some other game to occupy their time. I still have multiple active PF1 games going, and my grognard players have no interest in switching, but I am always looking for good new content. It's in short supply these days without doing a lot of converting. (At least we have the whole Kingmaker AP to do still... someday...)

I don't know about unprofitable, but 1e still seems to be fairly popular.

Popular =/= profitable.

AD&D 1e and 2e are still very popular with vibrant communities and lots of players enjoying them. But WotC isn't producing any new content for these editions, because they aren't protifable. Most of the people who play these eds have what they describe as a "lifetime of content" on their shelves and aren't into buying new stuff. The same holds for PF1, the latter PF1 books frequently barely broke even or brought a loss because of oversaturation.

Can we have some assurances that the release will actually happen?

Post in another thread says product was delayed even before OGL issues. I wouldn't hold your breath for this one.

Given that everything looks that this book would have to be published under OGL 1.1 and thus giving Wizards all the rights to all the stuff within... I can't really see this ever coming out.

"Content already released under 1.0a will also remain unaffected."

Considering this clarifications that the tower-dwellers of the shoreline gave on their platform, anything that is published under the old OGL (that is prior to the release of 2.0) will be safe.

If I understand it correctly, all that's really needed is to release this before 2.0 rolls over.

I'm assuming so... I mean... sure, Paizo will not die if this project is shelved considering the numbers they just pulled over the last month, clearing 8 months worth of books, but it would hurt them in the eyes of a potential new playerbase, and leave a lot of fans quite bitter if they don't release it. If it contains no references to D&D's copyrighted material, it can be released using Creative Commons without even touching the OGL (even if it remains unchanged).

Yes, during the OGL kerfuffle, everyone would have understood Paizo choosing not to go forward with this project.

But, now that WotC has backed down about de-authorizing the OGL, the risk is the same as before (or better, as it would help bridge players over from D&D).
