PaizoCon Online Will Be Scheduled For May 26-31

Not sure if this is a great place to ask this but I'm running out of resources. Is there truly no way, aside from Chromecasting from another device, to run Twitch through a Roku-based smart TV? I'm going nuts trying to figure this out so I can watch PaizoCon while I work from home...

I no longer have Roku and have not tried this, but this website offers some methods to get it up and running.

I actually just remembered I can dust off my old Playstation and run through that... very clunky interface but full HD streaming available! So I'm sorted. Jeez, I'm ridiculously excited to catch all these panels!

The staff are debriefing over PaizoCon Online, but the next shift in focus is to Origins Online/ConCurrent (for Alex & myself) and Gen Con Online for the staff as a whole. So we won't have news on PaizoCon 2020 until we get through Gen Con and probably not until the end of 2020. Of course, I wouldn't expect anything else. I was more thinking about the community discussing what (if any) role they would want an online presence to have during the presumably-offline 2021 con.

For me, I'd love to see online interactive specials for PFS and SFS running parallel to the in-person ones. Probably different actual modules, because I assume trying to link everyone into the same story across multiple platforms would just be insane, but still something to let anyone playing from home feel like they got to be part of something unique.

Would love to continue to see an online component to PaizoCon.

I would also be extremely excited to see an online component to PaizoCon and/or a separate PaizoCon Online, moving forward. The convention really went exceptionally well and I enjoyed it immensely!

I had a great week during PaizoCon 2020, had booked that week off work anyway, won a Starfinder bundle for Fantasy Grounds, and Kingmaker CRPG for PC, enjoyed as many seminars as I could stay awake for, played 6 PSF 2e games and won the gift certificate at the end of the game twice... does anyone know when those gift certificates might be handed out to the winners?

I hope this online convention becomes an annual event in future.

The thing is, if PaizoCon Online would be to continue, I'm not sure how it'd be run. Know Direction put all of their time and energy into running it, alongside Paizo and the Organized Play staff. But those groups can't do that on top of actually running the IRL convention itself. Plus, one of the biggest components for me was the online AMAs, and I know for sure none of the Paizo staff would be able to juggle that on top of constant IRL conversations and panels.

If PaizoCon Online would continue being a thing, I feel like it can't happen at the same time as IRL PaizoCon. It certainly wouldn't be like this year, since everyone Paizo-related would be at the IRL location being busy all weekend. So it'd either need to happen at another time, or it'd need to be WAY scaled back to be able to happen concurrently. And at that point, it would be a different thing, and not a true PaizoCon experience.

Another time might be fine. Sometime in fall or winter maybe?

Hey Guys, it's helpful to tell us what parts of this year's PaizoCon you enjoyed and what parts you feel we could improve upon. But it's not helpful to speculate on how WE might run next year's show without all of the information.

We aren't even a week away from this year's super successful show and have our eyes set on upcoming shows like Origins Online and Gen Con Online, so please give us time to get through the con season before we dive into what next year's PaizoCon will look and feel like.

If you're referring to the sign-in sheets for Organized Play, I don't know that consistency will happen. In-person sign-ins can vary quite a bit as well with GMs using custom sheets or using the generic scenario sign-in and a second sheet for additional info they want.

Different GMs like different bits of information beyond the bare minimum needed for reporting and chronicles. Some may want to know races and a bit of background so they can work that into the story for everyone. (Or maybe the scenario has an encounter with particular relevance for one race, but they don't want to give that away). Some like to know your Perception modifier so they can make a couple of secret rolls. I provide space on my SFS signups for players to put in the boons they are planning on slotting. It's optional, but it gives the players a chance to coordinate. A couple of online GMs I had wanted my Day Job roll on the sign-in rather than doing it at the table. Some GMs have powerful (and expensive) tools at their disposal to automate filling in chronicles - but only if the info is in the order they originally set up.

None of these are particularly chaotic as long as the sign-in sheets are available well before the game and it's explicit what is being asked for.

Realizing that everything had to come together VERY quickly this year, and that a LOT of allowances need to be made for that:

Future online conventions would be more accessible with a much more centralized information/schedule hub. I had to learn how to use discord (where most stuff was happening), sort out twitch channels, search the Warhorn event in finicky ways (since the site wasn't built for that many games), and learn several VTTs to play games, among other tech. All of that was doable, but there was a lot of operating in vacuum where attendees had to figure it out for themselves. An example: the fact that you need to go to one discord channel and use a ?rank command to access a lot of the other channels is very simple - but if you don't know that such a function exists (or what the rank you need is) in the first place it can be a brick wall.

All these external tools exist, so there's no need to reinvent the wheel. But a purpose-built website where all the information is centralized would have been extremely useful. Schedule of events, with links to the app/tool where it is happening, and instructions for anything global you need to do beyond "click this link" to use/attend.

Maybe if you described what about them was inconsistent we could better determine if the issues you experienced are systemic or GM-specific.

For instance, all my GMs were using a different form, but they were all asking for the same basic information so I didn't find it to be a problem.

I'm sure that it is GM-specific. In-person cons always seem to have a standard form for turning in the information to the coordinator(s). It sounded like GM's were left to their own devices on how to collect the information.

I had everything from GMs creating their own tracking form in google sheets that were available before the session ever started to GMs that were scrambling to having us enter the information into roll20.net chat at the very end of the session.

In my experience live cons have a mix of prefilled reporting sheets provided by HQ, the reporting sheet included in the scenario, generic reporting sheets downloaded by the GM, and custom sheets the GM prefers because of large print, additional info, etc. The exact form is less important than the necessary information being present and legible.

Why does the specific form matter? Did they ask for inappropriate information? I guess I just don’t understand why it would be a problem for each GM to use their own form. As long as the event is properly reported and you receive a properly completed chronicle, what’s the problem?

Yeah, I think its probably what partially motivates devs to encourage online reporting being done correctly. Like I don't really care myself for sign up sheets, but I can understand some people getting anxiety, frustration or annoyance for inconsistencies. (I'm myself obsessive about the paper work being correctly in paizo.com so I feel annoyed whenever I can't check the reported session in cons whether the reporters reported correct conditions or not)
