Summon Monster X

Friday, May 15, 2015

We're getting closer and closer to the June release of Dungeons Deep, the latest, greatest set of prepainted plastic Pathfinder Battles miniatures from our friends at WizKids! By my count, we've revealed nearly the entire set so far, but I've been holding off on two figures in particular, waiting for the right time to show them off. Lots of folks have been asking if Dungeons Deep will have any iconic characters, now that we're also releasing those characters in the form of the spectacularly detailed Iconic Heroes Base Sets. The answer, my friends, is a resounding YES, and this set's iconic hero rounds out the ranks of the iconic characters we featured in our second class-centered RPG release, the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player's Guide.

I speak, of course of Balazar the summoner and his beloved "pet," the otherworldly eidolon Padrig!

Let's take a closer look at Balazar, Gnome Summoner.

Balazar's sculpt captures him mid-spell, or perhaps directing the actions of his eidolon from afar. While the sculpt is similar to Balazar's appearance in the just-released Iconic Heroes Set 3, here the colors are somewhat brighter, and if I'm being honest I think I like this version of Balazar just a little bit more than the Iconic Heroes version, which is a bit darker. Balazar is, as I mentioned, the final iconic character of the original 17 to appear as a prepainted miniature in one of the random Pathfinder Battles sets. While the stand-alone Iconic Heroes boxes will delve further into the ranks of iconic heroes from the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Class Guide (and possibly beyond), Balazar is also the last iconic character to show up in the regular Pathfinder Battles line, at least for the next set, which contains none.

So let's take a moment to celebrate our tour through the iconic characters of our first two major hardcover rulebook releases. We knew we'd get to you eventually, little guy! Balazar, Gnome Summoner is a Small, rare figure.

Balazar is just a wee gnome without his best buddy Padrig, who in Dungeons Deep is called simply "Eidolon." The Eidolon represents a class feature with lots of variability, so it's probably fitting that Padrig is a weird snake/chicken hybrid. He'll see plenty of table use for folks playing the Balazar pregenerated character in the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild organized play program, but I'm also hoping he gets use as a generic eidolon figure, or just as a weird monster used to throw off players who think they have every Bestiary memorized.

The sculpt here is a bit meatier than the Padrig figure in Iconic Heroes Set 3. Check out the back view to see Padrig's snake body fading away into clear plastic, taking a cue from his original Wayne Reynolds illustration. The figure twists and turns with some real dynamism, and it's growing on me even more as I sit and look at it now. Yes, he's a weirdo, but he's a fun weirdo. The Eidolon is a rare, Medium figure.

I leave you this week with a look at Balazar and his Eidolon as they face off against the vicious Gargantuan Red Dragon Case Incentive figure from the Dungeons Deep set.

Don't forget to order our most recent Iconic Heroes boxed sets: Iconic Heroes Set 1, Iconic Heroes Set 2, and Iconic Heroes Set 3, all of which are shipping now to paizo.com customers.

Better yet, set up a Pathfinder Battles Ongoing Case Subscription to unlock a whopping 30% discount on Iconic Heroes box purchases (the discount for new subscribers goes into effect only after your first case ships next month). Existing subscribers should also consider ordering the Iconic Heroes sets soon, as they've proven to be very popular and they will not last forever!

There will be no Pathfinder Battles preview blog next week, as we'll all be rolling dice and hanging out with fellow gamers at PaizoCon 2015! I'm going to try to have the entire Dungeons Deep set on display in the Paizo store at the convention, so swing by there to see these awesome figures in person.

I'd also like to remind all PaizoCon attendees that I host an annual Miniatures Trading Afterparty in the hotel bar following the formal close of the show. I'll have a bunch of Pathfinder Battles figures for trade, as well as remnants from my own personal miniatures collection that I'm looking to unload. We've been doing this event for something like 6 years now, and it's always a highlight of the show. Bring any minis (painted preferred, but there's a market in unpainted figures too) you don't want and trade them with other gamers for figures you do. It's awesome, and I'll see you there!

Until then, I remain,

Awesome, i really like Padrig, and the gargantuan red dragon looks vicious!

This has got to be one of my favorite sets so far, there are so many interesting creatures in it, that i am looking forward to.

Question to Eric* Do you still plan to add the Derakni demon in a future set? I remember a post back in Wrath of the Righteous previews where it was said that the Locust Demon accidentally took the place of Derakni demon in that set, and that you planned to include him in a future set.

Would really love to see that creature made it into a set.

Wish a great time to all that can manage to go to PaizoCon, i will eagerly await for Dungeons Deep to release next month.

Cheers!

Sorry but i´m not thrilled about these (to me) obsolete miniatures.

I don´t want to buy the Iconic Heroes 3 Box (which i will) in may and find 2 of the included miniatures a few weeks later looking ALMOST THE SAME in some Dungeons Deep booster!

I imagine it was planned long ago to include these miniatures (to complete the APG characters) in this set of Pathfinder Battles but it would have been better to cut them and replace them with something else.
It probably could´nt be done on time and so we get them twice.

To sell that as a good thing is inappropriate.

I could understand it if they looked different - Imrijka the half-orc inquisitor is a good example as she has a very different pose in her Wrath of the Righteous incarnation than in the Iconic Heroes 3 one - even if a melee weapon would have been better.

Also the pose of the Gargantuan Red Dragon is really bad - it looks as it is attacking something OVER him and that should not be the case.
The Shemhazian Demon is much more massive like a real Gargantuan creature and costs $10 less so why the price increase?

I think i´ll pass on the case.

Most of the other minis from this set look great though.

Now only one Dungeon Dressing is missing.

Have fun at Paizo Con! ;-)

LOL passing on the set because of three minis.

One day, I won't be doing this anymore, and a part of me will be very relieved.

The way I see it, the dragon is rearing back, preparing to breathe fire out over the party. And I really like the two other minis, I'll be feeding the addiction, of that I am sure.

I also find it odd to see Balazar and Padrig in this set and the latest iconics set. I assume, as Marco eluded, the decision was made some time back to include them in this set. Of course its only 2 rares in the set so it doesn't have a great impact. On the plus side both look good - I'm assuming these are paint masters though.

As a counterpoint to one of the comments above I find myself liking that Dragon more and more with each reveal, mind you I loved the promise the digital sculpt held anyway. The pose to me looks like the classic "roaring to the heavens before I swat the annoying little folk". What makes it better for me is the uniformity with the small to huge we got in the evolution pack, a set I wish we could have seen more of - still need the blue, green and black.

Marco is right that leaves only one piece of dungeon decor to be revealed, so with that in mind let me say well done on this set. Take pride in the work Erik, this set is exceptional. Now I just have the impatient run to the actual release.

With PaizoCon around the corner are we liekly to hear any word on the future of the battles line. Obviously the next set is a little way off yet but I'm keen to hear about the next iconics or other planned sets - Evolution? Huge? Themed packs?

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

These are not paint masters, but production figures.

Wow, that is fantastic news. Looks like this set will more than exceed my expectations. That makes Balazar quite impressive then, lot of good detail on a small miniature.

If I may be so bold: When you're done, pal, just give me a call. I'm ready! =7

I know there's no pleasing anyone, but given how confident I am that you share the same collecting bug that we do (one of us, ONE OF US!!!) and have at least as long a list as any of us has of minis we still want to see, I imagine it would be hard to walk away.

So, have we done Gargantuan minis of all the chromatics now? If so, any chance we'll see some Gargantuan Metallics up next? Cause I sure would love to see a Gargantuan Silver and a Gargantuan Gold. ^_~

I said "I think i´ll pass on the case." because i don´t like that dragon enough to pay $50 for it.

I WILL buy one or two bricks like i have been doing since "Heroes and Monsters".

Also i like the Balazar and Padrig minis but not enough to have 2 almost identical versions of them. ;-)

The shipping costs to germany are to high... ;-)

And i don´t want to spend €45 (plus €360 for the case) for a mini i don´t find that great when i can get a Silver Dragon the same size for €30.

I´ll just spend €200 for 2 bricks. ;-)

I Balazar an original summoner or unchained? If he's APG summoner, he and Padrig can definitely take a G. Red Dragon!

If you take into account the shipping delays and whatever voodoo witchcraft is going on over at Wizkids, you'll see these Balazars weren't meant to come out so close to one another. The Iconic Heroes Set #3 was originally announced as a March release. That means that had everything been on time, there would have been a 2+ month gap between each piece, not the much closer 2+ weeks.

Also, @Marco:

How do you figure that Erik promoting the Battles line Balazar is inappropriate? If it's some sort of cash-grab trick as you seem to imply it is, then it's a flawed one. Promoting the Battles case Balazar over the Iconics Hero version indirectly suggests to pass on the Iconics Hero set. And while theoretically more money could be made by going for the Battles case over the Iconics Set, nobody is going to base their decision to plunk down $300+ on a case on the quality (or preference) of one individual miniature.

This isn't Sideshow Collectibles, where they make a billion different variants based on one character or sculpt.

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

For the record, I love this Red Dragon pose. He's grounded (my favorite) but still dynamic in appearance. For my purposes, he's looking up above him at the Ranger archer that has taken high ground. I've never been in a battle with a gargantuan dragon where one of the fighters fails to take the high ground.

Marco does bring up a good point about the $10 increase. That is a 25% increase over the cost of the previous gargantuan piece.

Silver Crusade

Now that we've got the Core and APG Iconics, how about some love for Reiko and Hayato? I'd love to see the Ninja and Samurai get their day in the sun.

Balazar and Padrig look cool, but as a GM I would have rather rounded out the list of UC pregens. Still super excited for the set, and here's hoping for the next one!

Grand Lodge

I don't think there's a pregen version of the summoner for PFS, but I hope they make one so this set can hit the table more often. . Those are some pretty cool minis. I'm really digging this whole battles set and I think its convinced us to get a subscription. Love the dragon and can't wait to see more dungeon decor

So, you're probably building the set list for the December 2016 release ...

Here are a few suggestions ...

Someone with a bastard sword.
Rust Monster (bestiary 238)
A wolf, lion, or cheetah with armor but no saddle to represent an animal companion
An elf with an Elven Curvedblade
The Hunter iconic with it's wolf

Just My Thoughts

My suggestions for new mini:
Monster - Pactmaster

Humanoid - Chelaxian soldier(s)
Grassk Uldeth (I probably botched the spelling; the biggest baddest orc in Belkzen)
A cleric of one of the good or neutral deities (plenty of good illustrations of Calistrians, for instance).

As for not doing this. You just wait until you've completed all the minis I desire, although admittedly this set knocks a few of those off, well a lot really. For the next set let me just say two words - Red Mantis. The artwork from inner sea codex is good, at least I think it was that, the one with the fully dressed female standing in the Crimson mist. Now I'll have to go check. Maybe four more words- small and large Spriggan.

Pulse pounding! I ended up buying the OST which I rarely do. A great action film.

Dungeon's Deep will be my third Pathfinder Battles set. I am really looking forward to it.

I suspect part of what Eric needs is a page number (like you did with the rust monster) because they very, very rarely make minis without their being original artwork (Up until this set, I don't think they had at all, but DD has a few in it).

Giant Mantis from the cover of Reign of Winter: The Snows of Summer
Plant Eidolon on page 25 of Heroes of the Wild
Machine Soldier on page 10 of Trial by Machine (I'm sure it's elsewhere)
Female Monk from Can't remember what book

ANY of the ACG Iconics.
More GIANTS!

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

Yes. We have to have good, legible-to-a-sculptor art reference, which usually means a full-body illustration that is very clear and not too stylistic.

I'd like to see:

1. Bunyip
2. Giant Crab
3. Merrow
4. Froghemoth

I'd like to see some more minion type creatures like:

1. Drow house soldier (monster codex pg. 35)
2. Drow Matron (monster codex pg. 39)
3. Lizard folk Champion mounted on triceratops (monster codex pg. 145)
4. Female orc Scout (monster codex pg. 169)
5. Gorthek (monster codex pg. 172)
6. Vampire seducer (monster codex pg. 239)
7. Death Initiate (NPC codex pg. 209)
8. Bar maid (NPC codex pg. 243)
9. squire (NPC codex pg. 251)

I would also like a generic ghoul or vampire minion in armor, but cant find any good art for either.)

Kyton, Interlocutor p 174 bestiary 3

Yah-thelgaad p 90 valley of the brain collector AP 88
Phantom Armor p 213 Bestiary 4

How about an underdark set with the various creatures who dwell in the sunless world below ground. A couple of drow (not too many though), duergar, svirfneblin, hook horrors, cave fishers, could put more aberrations in there (from the depths of the earth, where the magic is oldest).

Silver Crusade

So are we looking at some thing like Lem, Feiya, Lirianne, Reiko, Hayato, and something else (Feiya's fox?) for Iconics Set #4?

Scarab Sages

It's good to see Balazar and Padrig; the Summoner was one of the more interesting concepts to come out of the APG.

I suspect we won't see multiple sculpts for Padrig at different sizes, but that's understandable for a niche figure, and I can always cobble one or two together in my converting laboratory.

Just so Steve doesn't feel like he gets all the fun. Here are some of the art pieces I think would make great minis and have enough to actually make good art references.

Ilee, distant worlds, page 46. Out there and difficult but very creepy

Baragara, bestiary 3, p34

Kyton interlocutor, bestiary 3, p174

Troll hound, bestiary 3, p274. Sadly I'm not sure the art is that good for sculpting from

Manacielo gremlin, bestiary 4, p144

Sacristan Kyton, bestiary 4, p177

Tooth fairy, bestiary 4, p262. Creepy, and somewhat oddball fey. Great art.

Bugbear tyrant, NPC codex, p27

Fire giant queen, NPC codex, p32

Pugwampi gremlin, bestiary 2, p144. THE single most annoying creature ever.

Qlippoth cythinigot, bestiary 2, p 221. Seriously creepy

Morgh, bestiary, p208. Give is almost transparent purple innards and I think it would be a winner.

Male drider, the inner sea would guide, p61. Perfect reinvention of the drider and a perfect dark echo of the females already out there.

Knight of abendego, the inner sea world guide, p177

Thin man, inner sea bestiary, p52. It's a fey! Creepy too.

Shadow giant, inner sea bestiary, p15. I know we've had a LOT of giants but these just exude evil and cool in equal measure.

Death whisperer, NPC Codex, p158

God Stealer, NPC codex, p207.

Chaos arrow, NPC codex, p 203.

Red mantis assassin, inner sea NPC codex, p 47

Thanks.

To be honest, I would post my suggestions but the list is so long as to be silly.

I will trust you, Erik, to select for us. :-)

Silver Crusade Contributor

Yeah, I also figured it was for Steve only. That said, I suppose offering my opinion can't hurt. ^_^

As before, Lady Andaisin (AP #8, pg. 55)
Red Mantis Assassin, male (based on existing mini)
Red Mantis Assassin, female (Inner Sea NPC Codex, pg. 47)
Red Mantis Commander (AP #39, cover image)
Sabina Merrin (AP #7, pg. 25)
Laori Vaus (AP #9, pg. 19)
Radvir Giovanni (AP #47, pg. 40)
Eccardian Drovenge (AP #30, cover image)
Tetisurah (AP #81, cover image)
Erinyes (Bestiary, pg. 75)
Kyton evangelist (Bestiary, pg. 185)
Vanth psychopomp (AP #47, pg. 88)
Strix (Advanced Race Guide, pg. 200)
Aldori Swordlord (Inner Sea NPC Codex, pg. 4)
Old Ones Cultist (Inner Sea NPC Codex, pg. 41)
Priest of Razmir (Inner Sea World Guide, pg. 161)
Gray Gardener (Inner Sea World Guide, pg. 73)

Each of these is either likely to be relevant multiple times during an Adventure Path, as well as useful outside it; OR, is generally useful; OR fills a relevant niche (such as wielding a specific weapon).

Regarding the Red Mantis, if the paint job can be done simply enough, I'd like to see multiple, similar to the Grey Maidens from Shattered Star or the Lamashtu cultists. Two low-rarity and a rare "commander", ideally.

Thank you for reading this. ^_^

I'll probably give the Dungeon Deep summoner and eidolon to my nephew or a friend and keep the iconic versions for myself. Or, vice versa. Either way, I'm still very excited for both DD and Iconic Heroes 3.

Bestiary 3 has some monsters and art I'd love to see as minis in an upcoming set:

River Drake - A medium flying creature that can terrorize lower level characters. I've used river drakes in two different scenarios with low level PCs and received good feedback both times. They're excellent in random wilderness encounters. I think the mini would look great too, as the art shows the creature with bold, distinct features that would stand out in miniature form. I think there has been 4 drakes so far, all large. A medium would be welcome.

Suli - The fire erupting from the man's forearms in translucent plastic would look spectacular. It would be a useful mini as well, pulling double duty as a player character or as a baddie.

And I know it's an incredible long shot:

Tzitzimitl - Seriously. A flying, 50 foot tall, stone covered skeleton with translucent purple plastic gas and lightning effects would be the most amazing promo yet. I think it would stand a bit taller than the white dragon gargantuan.

Honestly, if you fine people at Paizo put out a line of huge, gargantuan and colossal monster miniatures I'd be all over it. Imagine, linnorms, imperial, primal and outer dragons, bandersnatch, xacarba....

Those are the ones I really wanna see in prepainted plastic.

I want to second the Large and Small spriggans; that would be SO helpful.
And I also can't believe we've never seen a Red Mantis in prepainted plastic yet. That's crazy. My favorite would be Chivane, the sexy elf mantis leader from the cover of the 3rd Serpent's Skull adventure.
And I'll make my regular plea for a shocker lizard, too :-)

That would be great. Paizo has made some of the best looking PPM orcs, but no one has ever made a full-blooded female orc. It would be great to have a couple female orc minis. Not all female orcs are relegated to a breeder role :)
