Flyn focuses up and climbs again with more determination…
Climb: 1d20 + 11 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 8 = 37
Climb: 1d20 + 11 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 11 + 8 = 39
At the top of the wall, Flyn looks down to make sure the ground around the gate is clear of any foes…
Are my other rolls still good? (Per: 39, DD: 53)
Thanks, Colin, but save the fly spell, we might need it later…unless of course, this check fails…
Grandmaster TOZ |
Monkey Fish doesn’t clear in one round, so one more check. Plus getting down the other side!
Grandmaster TOZ |
Flyn clambers up the wall with stealth and guile, surveying the grounds of the lodge from the top before sliding to the earth below. The gate remains closed and unguarded, no Pathfinders in sight nearby. Across the grounds, figures of rotting flesh and skeletal bone stagger about, seemingly aimless. The source is readily apparent, as the Mausoleum doors stand open and more undead mill inside.
The second most obvious trouble is marked by a plume of smoke, as flames are visible in the domed tower windows of Starhall. Several groups of humanoids appear to be rushing between some of the out buildings, carrying satchels and large objects. Some of them appear to be climbing over the wall on the far side. Much less concerning but still noticeable is a lone figure appearing to be working on the door of the Center House, oblivious to the state of the lodge.
With access to the inner mechanics of the gate lock, Flyn is able to work the levers and safeties properly to remove the heavy bars sealing the entrance shut, and the ponderous doors swing open to admit those outside.
Flyndyngylyn |
Flyn looks to the half-Orc guard. ”Send word to VC Petulengro that the gate has been opened and we pressing on..”
After assessing the current situation, he turns to his companions. ”Chaos is everywhere, all at once; I would judge the fire and the undead horde to be most in need of our attention. My gut tells me we should put out the fire first, before it spreads, but I’m open to either one…”
Colin Rosenthal |
Cast Hunter's Blessing (Undead, Urban) on everyone
"Fire, undead, and thieves, huh? Fire is indeed the one that's hardest to recover from. The rest can be deal with by our arrows."
Banon |
"On it, boss!" The junior agent beats feet down the street towards the Wounded Wisp.
Two votes for fire, coming right up!
Grandmaster TOZ |
Quickly coming to the decision that the fires of Starhall are the first priority, the team makes their way across the Grand Lodge with alacrity. While the doors are closed, there are numerous windows sixty feet above the ground open to the air. From one of these billows the smoke cloud that marked the building so starkly.
Flyndyngylyn |
Flyn gives a wry smile as he reaches into a pouch and pulls out a key to unlock and open the door to Starhall, warily entering the building and taking a look around…

Rows of bookcases stand burning, as an ashen skinned humanoid with flaming wings walks among them, touching a flaming longsword to scrolls and tomes. It pauses, gesturing to one shelf, causing one of the tomes to teleport to its hand. It briefly peruses the pages before raising the blade again.

Amiya will share the knowledge spoiler to teammates
"Archon, why are you burning those precious books and tomes?"
Grandmaster TOZ |
The celestial turns and looks at Colin, its voice sounding directly in your minds as it has no mouth. This is the execution of a lawfully signed contract. Do not interfere.
Colin Rosenthal |
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 24
Shirt Reroll: 1d20 + 21 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 21 + 5 = 35 I might need aids, guys
Colin sighs and takes out his Type40 Wayfinder that he pre-ordered from Kickstarter, "This is Venture-Captain Colin Rosenthal speaking." He gestures to the other archer in the team "And that's Venture-Captain Flyndyngylyn."
"Emergency situations have arose in the Grand Lodge that demand your immediate coorperation. The campus has been breached, and the security has been compromised, therefore new task need to be carry out in fulfillment of your contract on the goal of safeguarding the forbidden knowledge in the library: cease your destruction of the tome, and guard the Starhall from enemies of the Society."
"Compensation for the alteration of your contract can be discussed once the situation is under control."
Grandmaster TOZ |
The archon snaps the tome shut in its hand and lowers the blade. The breach of the Pathfinder grounds is the contracted contingency that enacted the summoning spell set by the agreed contract. As Venture Captain, you are authorized to rescind the terms demanding destruction of the hazardous knowledge. Further negotiation would be required to add extended taskings to the contract.
Profession Barrister or Knowledge Planes can also be used for the subsequent check instead of Diplomacy!
Quenly |
You know you could have just asked me to fly over the wall, Flyn Quenly smiles wanly, held aloft on wings of shadow.
I can deal with the fires. Probably.
GM, how large are the fires? Quenly could use a Shadow Conjuration Sleet Storm, or a Shadow Evocation Hydraulic Torrent, to cover a large area and put out fires. Iirc objects don't get saving throws unless they are attended and/or magical.
Grandmaster TOZ |
Looking around, Quenly can see that entire bookcases in the hall are burning, spread out over multiple floors.
Quenly |
Quenly gestures, and creates a cold downpour that douses the flames. 40' radius, not sure how much of the room that covers. Avoid the person of the archon.
Colin, can you conjure water elementals to put out the rest of the fires?
Grandmaster TOZ |
With Quenly's spell and Colin's elementals happily splashing torrents of water over the smaller flames, the hall is quickly drenched, leaving only the haze of smoke over the badly damaged collection of tomes.

Colin negotiated with Hao Jin's release once and dealt with Zarta's mess in Hell, so archon is not the worse that he has to deal with.
Clearly, not the most talkative day also :(
Need more aid....
Flyndyngylyn |
Forgot you mentioned we could use other skills besides Diplomacy for subsequent checks; with a +8 and free inspiration on Knowledge checks, figure this might be worth a shot…
Flyn bows deeply to the archon, and speaks in its native tongue…
”As Venture-Captain Colin has mentioned, if you would agree to stay and defend the Starhall from further mischief, we’d be most appreciative… “

This tasking is outside of the scope of the contract.
Flyn recalls that guarding instead of destroying such texts is counter to the archon's nature, making it a difficult ask.
But possible with a good argument/check!
Colin Rosenthal |
Familiar auto aid with Knowledge
Diplo: 1d20 + 21 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 21 + 8 = 35 "If the enemy can shut down the entire Grand Lodge's defense, retreiving information from burnt books is not entirely out of their reach either. The best way to safeguard those action right now is to prevent the enemies from getting their hand on these tome."
I need aid as well
Thaddeus Treeskipper |
Tad points out that it's hard to know what book to destroy when you are in a hurry. If intruders are prevented from getting near the books, that allows time to think later. (auto aid on diplomacy)
Quenly |
Hazardous knowledge is only hazardous in the wrong hands, and it's the Venture Captains who decide who the 'wrong hands' belong to. The obvious way to discharge your contract is to remove the wrong hands - as directed by the Venture Captains here before you.
Also Auto-Aid Diplomacy.
Grandmaster TOZ |
Much of this knowledge is vile. But there is justice in knowing the enemy and their methods, to better thwart evil schemes. This Unnamed shall stand guard until all threats have been dispatched.
Encounter cleared!
Flyndyngylyn |
Flyn bows in appreciation to the archon and then looks to his companions…
”Good job, my friends; no time to waste, let’s hit the Mausoleum and take care of the undead situation…”
Flyn will take point, heading towards the Mausoleum…and upon arrival, he’ll warily approach to see where all these undead are coming from…

"Well done, Pathfinders." The voice comes from a shimmering image of a woman wearing a rune-inlaid ivory mask, adorned with peacock feathers, blood-red crystalline tears, and silver rings. "Once again you have been called to defend the Grand Lodge and are proving your mettle admirably. I have been monitoring the situation here and in Gallowspire to the best of my ability. I have not been able to locate the rogue member Vahlo, through the influence of his helm, nor have I seen Grandmaster Torch, likely through similar wards. As the only agents available to defend the Lodge, I charge you to stop Vahlo and Grandmaster Torch from causing further damage to the Society."
Flyndyngylyn |
Flyn bows as he recognizes the lady from her distinct mask; he had helped rescue her from Adril Hestram after he went rogue. ”Thank you, m’Lady, we will try our best; t’is good to see you again, it’s been a while. Glad to see you’re aware of the situation…”
While he has no reason to distrust her, with the recent revelations on corruption within the Decemvirate, Flyn tries to get a read on her nonetheless…

"There is probably a source of some great Necromancy energy that's creating these undeads somewhere in the Mausoleum." Colin will fly up and maintain altitude of 20ft.
We have +2/+2 vs undead and +2 initiative from Hunter's Blessing, don't forget
Flyndyngylyn |
Does that stack with Flyn’s ranger favored enemy bonus? I’m thinking it does as it’s a sacred bonus but the FE bonus doesn’t specify what type of bonus (at least not that I saw) so want to make sure…

Favored Enemy (proper) from Ranger is untyped that stack with everything. Hunter's Blessing spell is Sacred bonus. They are different type of bonus so they stack.
Quenly |
I am not opposed to banishing the unliving from our Lodge. Lead the way.
Quenly puts a few spells up before we approach the Mausoleum. Freedom of Movement, Deathwatch, Ward of the Season (Fall), Magic Vestment (shield), Shield of Faith, Bulls Strength, False Life. He's expended 3 Channel the Gift slots on Greater Magic Fang (so Colin still has the spell should it be needed again) - and 1 minute of Many Forms. Henceforth, Quenly wears his Agile +1 Amulet of Mighty Fists.
(Quenly also has Hunter's Blessing if we want to target other creature types and terrains later).

Flyn finds the projected image as inscrutable as ever, but detects nothing obviously amiss to raise suspicion.
"As much as I can be. The future shows me even less than the last momentous event you championed the Society through. You are our best hope to secure the Grand Lodge and avoid entanglements that might hamper the city's defenders in their efforts against the Whispering Tyrant's armies."
Flyndyngylyn |
Flyn nods. ”Aye, m’Lady, we’ll get it done or die in the attempt. Anything else before we press on? Seems we have a date with a horde of undead…”
Grandmaster TOZ |
"I can only offer you this boon. Within the statue of Durvin Gest you will find a hidden cache placed after the last treachery against the Ten. Use it as you see fit. I have faith in your skill and experience, now with the fate of the Pathfinder Society in your hands.” With that pronouncement, the image fades from sight.
