Rurat leads the way through the undisturbed jungle, his massive frame easily pushing through the foliage of the game trail. Flyn notices a few old tracks left among the brush that appear to be from a Small sized humanoid.

After perhaps twenty minutes, an eerie mist settles heavy on the ground, as the lush jungle gives way to a desolate killing field. Enormous bones from countless creatures litter the barren field. A sulfuric stench rises from pits of a bubbly, black substance. On the far side of the clearing looms a stone structure—a bleak, gray shadow in a tomb of emerald trees.

"This is where we will find our prey." Rurat rumbles in a low tone.

Quenly calls his dragon close to him, to ensure that the creature's senses warn him and his allies of approaching unseen enemies. Quenly then warps the shadow-stuff around him, causing the ground to ripple, and dome of earth to surround the kobold-pathfinders.

Quenly casts a Shadow Evocation to mimic Tiny Hut around the pathfinders. He'll telepathically call them close if they're separated, but a 20' radius hemisphere should be plenty of area. The hut will allow the party to see out and attack out, but we can't be seen whilst inside and the hut is opaque from the outside. Party members (except Quenly) can come and go from the hut as they please.

The elven sage then bolsters his own defences with further spells. Shield of Faith, Displacement, Bulls Strength.

"Hide if you must. I will go to draw them out." Rurat steps into the open, air walking to stand above the party.

Quenly takes the AC and attack boost from Blessing of Fervour.

"We will hunt the hunters" Quenly replies.

The elf gestures. Pockets of shadow across the plain expand, then recede, leaving behind 1d3 ⇒ 2 small, vaguely humanoid creatures seemingly composed of the substance of the ground itself. The elementals begin to search for the unseen prey...

Quenly casts Tenebrous Shadow Conjuration mimicking Summon Monster III, creating 2 shadowstuff Small Earth Elementals. The elementals have 60' Tremorsense and the Summoning compels them to attack enemies - so either they detect enemies already and will fight (even if they don't do any damage) or they'll help pinpoint the enemy at least.

The shadows cover Quenly completely, and he vanishes from view.

Quickened Vanish.

Claw on Quenly: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40

As Quenly begins his spell, a shimmer splits the air, a massive pale mantis claw cleaving through space to strike out and into the elf, tearing hard at his defenses! The claw attempts to latch onto him, but finds no purchase thanks to the wards in place. As swiftly as it appeared, the claw retracts into nothingness, the tear in the air dissipating in an instant.

I think that's just one round of buffing then. Since deciding against Tiny Hut, Quenly's choices would be Blessing of Fervour, and a Quickened Shield of Faith. Then his "round 1" casting would be as above, the Summon followed by a Quickened Vanish after he got hit. Does that work out? Then I might suggest a Holy Smite or a Flame Strike for Tad?

Quenly recognizes these to be some variant of deadly mantis, which are rare enough without being further unique. Sacred to the faith of Achaekek as a blessing from the dark god, they are given sacrifices of humanoid prisoners and livestock as a holy duty. On top of the commonality of being mindless insects (vermin creature type) they have an ability to toss captured prey after grappling and rending with multiple claws. Whatever else they are capable of, Quenly is unsure, as these mantis are markedly different with pale white carapaces and two extra claws on top of their usual pair.

Grab and rend along with a standard action throw once prey is grappled. Quenly can make a Knowledge Planes check to figure out the mechanics of their attack.

Based on the party's inability to detect the massive insects, Quenly knows that they were not just invisible. The only other option that would allow hidden predators to hunt prey on the Material plane would be that the mantis are able to cross between the Material and Ethereal planes.

Flyn steps back and peels off cold iron specifically at the visible mantis claw holding his amphibious friend…

Assuming since the claw grabbed Tad, that the claw remains visible; if that’s wrong, just count my first attack/damage as a readied action

Tad delays until Flyn takes his shots, the multiple arrows causing the claw to spasm and release the grippli!

Tad lets out a pitiful noise between a squeak and a sigh as the attack connects, and then a sigh of relief when he is released. He makes a mental note to thank Flyn later.

Tad casts a spell, and is wreathed in a protective layer of flame (fire shield)

Tad defensively defends himself! Rurat turns on the new threat, stabbing and slamming his massive weapons into it!

Quenly attempts to finish off the ghost mantis. He opens his mouth, and a blast of crackling lightning strikes the gigantic monster!

Can't fail the DC to defensively cast Shadow Evocation Dragon's Breath.

lightning damage: 12d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 3, 6, 1, 5, 5) = 51

Will DC23 to recognise as Shadow spell for 20% damage; and Reflex DC23 for half damage.

Quenly, now visible again, retreats under a casting of Grace.

Mindless critters are not immune to Shadow illusions iirc

If the ghost mantis survives Quenly's blast, the elf commands his conjured dragon to follow up...

Fluttering forwards to keep Quenly's allies out of danger, the little dragon unleashes its own breath weapon.

(Flying) 5' step, then 30' cone breath weapon - this keeps Tad and Rurat out of the AoE.

acid damage: 6d8 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 5, 3, 8) = 33

Will DC22 to recognise the dragon as a Shadow for 20% damage; Ref DC22 for half damage.

Reflex Saves: 2d20 ⇒ (8, 9) = 17

The mantis shrugs off the dragons breath weapon as electricity crackles along its carapace! The xill cease their transfer to the ethereal, moving to engage!

The swarming outsiders attempt to inject paralysis into the massive insect, but only one manages it, the bite only a minor irritant.

The mantis falls to Flyn's arrows! As the silence falls and stretches onward, the xill cross over to the ethereal plane, reporting back to confirm there are no further lurking monsters.

"The hunt is done. Your safe passage is now guaranteed." Rurat pronounces, before pointing his spear at the stone temple on the far end of the killing field. "Eylysia lairs within the temple there. Our business is now done." With a nod of his wide head, Rurat marches back into the jungle to his herd.

Flyn mimics Tad as he also bows to the Saurian as the huge creature nods farewell…

The Elf then nods to his friends and starts towards the temple, moving quietly and warily, in addition to checking for any other tracks that might lead there…

Taking 10:
Stealth: 10 + 32 = 42
Perception: 10 + 29 = 39
Survival (Tracking): 10 + 28 = 38

Flyn spies a number of humanoid bones strewn about the battlefield, partially obscured among the larger dinosaur bones. Some of the remains appear to have weapons and armor nearby, most ripped and torn from the claws and mandibles that pulled them from the unfortunate prey. The temple looms ahead, an ugly gray shadow on the edge of the wasteland.
