Lorenzo is correct, the Cappadocians nominated Mithras for a specific purpose, they knew that the request would be overruled, especially by the Ventrue. Every other Clan selected a member of their own clan.

He certainly didn't punk out, he had Belisarius dead. The Assamite was just able to move so fast and so deadly that Narses was crippled. The part where you specifically feel he was off a bit, was at the end, during the confrontation outside while Narses was incapacitated.
