Made it back to Spain in one piece. Now back to the game. Kka already made a failed RK on the ghouls earlier, but if the GM is allowing free do-overs :), then here goes

Activity: Recall Knowledge (Religion +7) - SECRET

Kka is a little surprised by how swiftly some of the ghouls react to Lough's attack. "For undead they're pretty quick off the maark." With a quick boost of confidence from Cherry, Kka goes into action.

Green and Pink have acted, so Kka doesn't get Surprise Attack against them. Blue is not so lucky.

Using her innate speed, she charges into the room, slides past the unmoving Lough and places herself between the ghoul that Lough damaged and the one that just paralyzed him. If nothing else, she hopes to take the heat off Lough until he can shake himself loose of the paralysis. "Not so faast boys. I've got a little friend here thaat wants a word with you first." She then swings her sword around and slashes at the ghouls.

Action 3 (◆): Strike (+1 Shortsword) with Thief Racket, Surprise/Sneak Attack and MAP1 vs Flat-Footed Blue, or most likely Green, if Blue went down after that first strike.

Shortsword Attack: 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 - 4 = 21 vs Flat-Footed

Kka:
You know a lot about these things. Ghouls are individually pretty weak, but they have powerful debilitating effects. Their claws and bite attack can paralyse, and their bites can inflict ghoul fever (which basically does damage and kills you outright if it goes on for too long). They can eat the flesh of the dead to regain HP, and they have an ability to move without provoking Reactions.
All in all, not too powerful, but they have some tricks up their sleeves.

In short order, she has his open wounds all patched up, but she tut-tuts at the sight of the infected bite. She racks her brains for the details of the progression of ghoul fever.

Activity: Recall Knowledge (Medicine +9) - SECRET

"Sorry Lough, I caan't fix this ghoul fever so easily. I caan try and help you fight it off, but it's going to taake a while. We'll have to go baack to Otari to do it right." She looks him in the eyes to try and gauge whether the first stage of the disease is having any negative effects on the man. "How are you feeling? Is the ghoul fever messing you up in any waay yet?"

I've been reviewing the rules for Afflictions (an example being a disease) and Treat Disease. Basically, you get an initial save to see if you catch the disease. If you fail (as Lough did), then you go to stage 1. A disease progresses through stages, with each stage having a (usually negative) effect and a duration. At the start of a stage, the afflicted suffers the effect; at the end of a stage's duration, the afflicted gets to roll another saving throw. Depending on the result, the afflicted will move to a different stage (crit success=stage-2, success=stage-1, failure=stage+1, crit fail=stage+2). Medics can spend 8 hours doing the downtime activity Treat Disease to try and give bonuses to the afflicted on their next end-of-stage saving throw. Curing a disease outright requires the successful casting of a Remove Disease spell. If Lough can't shrug the fever off on his own, then we may need to buy a 30gp scroll and have Cherry try to cast it to counteract the disease.

Spoiler:
2d20 ⇒ (10, 15) = 25

Both Kka and Cherry Berry know that the first day you're infected, you're fine. Diseases have a "dormant" state (incubation period) where you have contracted the disease, but don't show symptoms yet. After roughly 24 hours, you start showing symptoms of being sick.
For all intents, let's just say you know as soon as you wake up tomorrow, so you're not a ticking time bomb while in a dungeon.

If the patient doesn't recover on their own, ghoul fever could be lethal within a week. While you're sick, you take some negative damage each day, and you slowly resist being healed. Near the end of the diseased's life, they might resist healing altogether.

Also, while the check is technically not secret, characters don't know whether they succeeded at resisting the disease or not, because of that incubation period. Though obviously it's best to treat everyone bitten by a ghoul to treat them as if they had failed.

The wound itself looks pretty much like any other wound, except that a bit of rotten saliva has touched (and potentially crept into) it. There's no necrotisation just yet or something like that.

With Kvit's Antiplague and Cherry/Kka's Treat Disease, Lough could get as much as a +6 bonus on his next saving throw.

Kka then looks down the side hallway to check on Giyozara. She'd seen one of the ghouls head down there after the sorcerer but hadn't heard anything more. Giyozara maxed out the attack roll (20) and the damage roll (6,6) for at least 32hp of damage. Not bad for a Gnome/Sylph Sorcerer. I may have to add Gouging Claw to my Jayma's repertoire.

She then has a look around the hallway and the Reading Room looking for anything the ghouls may have tried to hide. In particular, she's looking for the books listed on the scrap of paper they found in Azrinae's rooms upstairs: What The Worm Knows, Grave Feasts, and Secrets of the Skull.

Yeah, Gauging Claw is pretty nice if you want to be up close and personal. Definitely not for every build, but I like it on my Eldritch Trickster Rogue. You can only do one attack a turn, but it scales nicely. Just need to make sure you actually hit. :P

Kka looks around the room for valuable books. It takes a while, as there are many, many bookshelves in this huge room, but you can't find those specific books, nor do you find the portrait of a handsome drow.

As you all look around, a thought pops into your heads: some of you might be familiar with Morlibint's book shop. Morlibint is a bit of an oddball (you simply know him as "Morlibint," you have no idea if that's his first, name, last name, or a nickname), but he runs a good shop, and he might pay well if you bring him some of these books. He sells mostly fiction books, but textbooks such as these always sell well in certain circles. Sadly, you have no idea at the moment which books he might be on the lookout for.
If you visit his place, he can give you a list of titles, publishers, and themes to look out for. If you can locate them on this level (meaning rolling a Perception check to find them), there's a nice bit of extra money to be made. It's not a super amount, but it's basically free money you can make during downtime.

As you're wandering around the big library, you see the green trail of words starting to dim. Looks like whatever is powering this is slowly running out of juice.

"That's a good idea Kvit," Cherry says, before tuning and looking at Lough. "Make sure you take medicine when Kvit gives it to you, Lough. We might want to give it to you for a few days even if you seem to get better, just in case."

"Hmm, I hope the light powering down doesn't mean something is powering up." Cherry sighs. "While it did lead us in to danger, do we want to start following it again?"

Ah, made a small mistake. The big round room to the south has its own flavour text, along with its own set of ghouls, which would've joined the fight. That seems a bit overkill, so we just skip those, but the contents of the room might be interesting.

This chamber’s smooth stone walls glisten with moisture despite the air being dry and somewhat stuffy. Several low divans are arranged in a circle and interspersed with low tables stacked with a few books and rotting morsels of decayed flesh. A twisting ribbon of pale blue light stretches between the bare floor at the room’s center and the ceiling above, its points of contact sending creepers of what looks like infected tissue out in a distorted spiral for a few feet.

Cherry Berry notices a secret door in the western side of the circular room.

Gritting his teeth, Lough obeys with reluctance.

"Follow the Light!"

"Shutup!" looking now at Giyozara, whom it appears he just yelled at (not true), Lough hangs his head, and follows the budding sorcerer.

Kvit sees the green light fading and sighs. "Lough's right, we need to keep moving or we'll lose this thing again. It was already acting strange, it might be running out of power or something else. I don't know. Let's move as quickly and smartly as we can.

I can summon the leech to go in first if that'll help.

Kka patched up Lough of everything except his ghoul fever, so he should be up to full HP at least.

Kka waits for Lough to go through the Repair Storage door when he suddenly decides to follow the green trail to the Restricted Collection. She follows after him. "Uh, where you going big maan? Thaat room's full of ghouls. You sure you're up to dealing with more ghouls?" Kka's never felt the need to chase after the green light, especially as it had a tendency to lead them into rooms full of nasties, but she wasn't about to let Lough go in there by himself.

She runs ahead and checks the door before Lough takes his position.

When Giyozara calls him off, Kka is at a loss. "So which is it? The Repair Storage or the Restricted Collection?"

I'm going to need some kind of tie breaker or direction to go in, as the party is now kinda divided on where to go.

Kka gets a little frustrated as the group mills around indecisively. "Look, guys; why don't we just deal with the ghouls in the Restricted Collection first? That waay we get the drop on them instead of them waandering in here and surprising us." She looks at the ghoul corpses around them. "After all, if they're anything like this sorry bunch, taaking them out shouldn't be a big deal."

The leech reappears and makes some very convincing gurgle noises.

Kvit conjures up the evil leech and Lough opens up the door to the Restricted Collection.

Rows of bookshelves run the length of this room, although in places they’ve been damaged or tipped over. The books that once sat on the ruined shelves appear to have been relocated to other shelves. Several doors lead out from this room, but the double door to the north is the most impressive: it’s made of stone, carved with a strange feminine shape rising from the ghost‑laced mists of a cemetery of emptied graves.

In the room, four ghouls are attempting to bring order in what seems to have been relatively recent chaos. They're heaping books together and trying to fix broken bookshelves, which is stymied by the rotten planks giving way as soon as pressure is put on them.

One ghoul in the back is wearing blue robes and has bits of rotten meat dangling around her neck, overseeing the effort. As soon as the door opens, the construction ghouls drop whatever they're doing and retreat back to guard the double door to the north. The overseer looks your way and says, "Visitors! What a surprise! I gather from the commotion earlier that you disagree with our methods? Worry not, we're reasonable people... Well, you know what I mean. We're not looking for a fight, I promise. Come, let's all visit High Priestess Nhakazarin, she can explain everything and you'll be on your merry way."

I've made a token for the leech. It's in a blue circle, so you know it's a friendly, not an enemy.

Kka looks past Lough into the room and spots the ghouls. In a lowered voice so that only her companions can hear, she says, "Looks like Graulgust was true to his word, though I really don't like the look of that taalkative ghoul boss. I'm guessing she'll be a tougher nut to craack than the others."

Turning her attention to the overseer, Kka calls out, "Look, lady; we didn't just faall off the turnip truck, so you can drop the whole caan we all get along? act. We're here to put an end to whatever evil shh...stuff you guys are up to, so let's just get on with it, eh? We're busy people."

Kka curses under her breath as the head ghoul gets the drop on them. She'd been hoping to act first and catch it flat-footed. "Oh well, nothing for it." She dodges past the groaning Lough and sidles up to the nearest (Green) ghoul underling. The ghoul is still a little stunned by the sudden turn of events and Kka takes full advantage of this fact to carefully aim her sword strike for maximum damage. She doesn't wait to see what effect her slice has on the creature before quickly ducking past the still groaning Lough and flattening herself against the wall next to the entrance. "We'll be too exposed if we taake them on in that room. Let's draaw them out into the main hallway where spaace is tighter and we have the advantage."
