Yeah, that's enough. It had 2 HP left. :P

Kvit throws three balls of pure force at the leech, and after the third bolt hits, the leech, fat with Lough's blood, explodes in a cloud of dried (and not-dried) blood. The necrotic blood lands on you and still tries to suck away your energy!

Everyone, make a DC 21 Reflex save! Cherry Berry, you get a +2 bonus from cover.

Critical success:
You wipe away the blood fast enough and nothing happens.

Success:
You wipe away the blood, but some of it still manages to drain your energy. You take 2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8 negative damage.

Failure:
You take a faceful of blood and it feasts on your lifeforce. You take 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 4) = 9 negative damage

Critical failure:
You accidentally inhale some of the blood-mist. You take 6d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 5, 3, 3) = 26 negative damage and you're Enfeebled 2 for 1 hour.

Cherry Berry manages to take cover in time and only get partially coated in blood. You're all feeling pretty bad from this fight (some more than others), but you managed to survive.

I'll re-do the flavour text again of the room.
A large metal table fitted with leather straps and iron bands sits in the center of this room. A strange contraption that seems to be part spyglass and part mechanical drill sits near the head of the table. A sparkling black gemstone glitters in a metal framework built into this machine’s side.

DC 20 Occultism or Religion:
This device aids in the casting of the create undead ritual. The drilling device penetrates the skull of a restrained victim, while the scope focuses the ritual's necromantic energies. Using this machine gives a +2 on a check to cast create undead.

The gemstone seems like the focus point (and powering force) of this device and can be pried loose relatively easily. It is worth 25 gp.

"You cannot die!"

Through blood-shadowed eyes, beneath the din of the nothing sound waiting beyond, a shrill voice boasts in celebration, for a reason our paranoid hero knows not. For as it is, as far back as he can remember, the only person he can remember was his uncle, caring for him, teaching him how to be a lumberjack, living in their small cottage together. As far back as he can remember, that was the first person to show him care. And yet.

"What do you mean? Do I know you?"

"That depends on what you mean by cannot. There is also could not, will not, and would not. One needn't know the words one chooses to speak for them to be spoken. Would not you agree?"

Something in this voice was familiar... if only he could place his tongue on it. Instead "You spin your words and avoid my question" an accusation!

"Saddled with two questions, I chose. But as you press me, let me answer your question with a question: Do you know me?"

Something about the way it was phrased, pronounced, sent a shiver up his spine. Lough searched his memory within his memory. Where had he heard that voice before? Not anytime recently: Certainly not in the Gauntlight Dungeon. But neither around the town of Otari. No. If it were so, it would have to be from further back. But when?... "Can you sing?" surprising even himself with the strange question, but worse, the eerie response:

"Can I sing? Or do you mean could I sing, will I sing, or would I sing?" though the voice was disembodied, he could "feel" it curl into a smile.

"Would you sing?"

And it did - the song was thus...:

Nuair a thosaíonn an solas céimnithe
Agus titeann scáthanna trasna na farraige saor in aisce
Réalta geal amháin sa spéir tráthnóna
Treoraíonn solas do ghrá mé ar mo bhealach

...in so stirring his first real eye open, then his second and third, and awakens our hero, back from a death that should have been permanent, that he shouldn't have been able to survive, and life, it's barest cling, shone back onto his face, that he grabs Kvit by one clawed-hand, and whispers into his ear "I cannot die!"...

Back in Otari (Explicit Content):

Lough’s heart was never the same.

After the ventricles inside the central cavity had been drained of all vitality, irrepairable damage was sustained on the inside, as necrotic tissues, having well and truly died for even a few moments, saw their “spark” dampen in the aftermath of resucitation by a whole order of magnitude, the cascading effect across our paranoid hero’s nervous system accutely malignant in it’s stagnanation.

And the effect was profound.

Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, stiffness of joints, atrophy of movement, lethargy, inattention, and to top it off, irritibility. Like a man aged well before his time, Lough finds himself being short with his new friends - even the mitflits! - his outbursts (normally within a tolerable range) unfairly targeting those closest to him, resulting in his further alienation from his fellow townfolk, and consequently - coupled with the lasting damage to his physical body - resulting in his vacation from his lumber job being made permanent. But it wasn’t just this - for upon returning from the yard - newly fired - the news that his uncle had been involved in a tragic accident came by within the hour, flooring an already fragile man into a deep depression, who withdrawing into his cottage, locked himself in for what looked to be the long haul. Until…

”Feeling sorry for oneself?” the voice was back.

”Leave me alone. I hate you”

”You hate us, and by extension, hate yourself!”

”Yes”

”Well. That won’t do. Listen to us. Go fetch the body. You know where it is buried?”

A pause. ”I do”

”We will wait here. Go now”

Despite the irony of the command, it was dark out, and the town was asleep, and Lough knew where the cadavers were kept, and so, he creeped into the night, stalked across town, snuck into the mortuary, grabbed his uncle’s body - both pieces - and slunk back to his cottage - the sheer adrenaline pulsing through his partially-necrotic body with an alacrity proportional to the scandal of the heist - dumping it onto the kitchen table, the smell of rigor mortis quickly saturating the air.

”Good. Now cut open the chest. Do it now”

Retracting his slagged claw, a simple incision is made, and peeling back the soft cold flesh, exposing the ribcage, a view into the inside of his uncle’s torso, strangely, having seen so much gore since heading into the Gauntlight, does not cause Lough’s stomach to churn. Quite the opposite: His nerves calm as a windless sea after a vast storm.

”Okay. Now what?”

”Go fetch the spare parts. Do it now”

”What spare parts?”

”Those piles of junk. You carried them back to town, but were unable to sell them. Go fetch those”

And Lough obeyed. And none did see him for a month, for nor did he emerge from his cottage, and nor did any have the nerve to tresspass more than knocking and waiting at most twenty minutes before turning around. Not even his friends…

Until one day - Today! - with his vigor looking quite returned - our orphaned human(oid) hero, as non-chalantly as a casual salutation at the local pub, walks back up to join his friends, smiling good-naturedly, and whence there had been a strong right arm, now in it’s stead, a silvery metallic contraption reassembled from that familiar pile of junk, recast into a bionic appendage with a strange piston locomotion, merging at the shoulder with a weld of sterling to scorched flesh, fully healed and scarred over, with a surprising limber mobility that betrays the illusion of life!

”Sorry I was gone. I feel better now”

After returning to town, Kvit spends a lot of time in the Dawnflower Library. Looking through scrolls, learning new languages, and attempting to learn new methods to make his illusions more believable.

He also sends off several letters to cousins and uncles and one aunt back near Absalom. Some of the letters are normal family updates. While some are inquiries and requests to find certain formulas and crafting plans for a Staff of Fire.

Kka opens the last door in the second level and finds another staircase down. You decide to head back to Boss Skrawng and upon entering his "throne room," you see a servant holding a bucket on his head, standing 10 feet away from Boss Skrawng, while he is trying to throw rocks in the bucket. Looking at the poor servant's bruised face, it looks like he isn't very successful. Boss Skrwang stands on top of his throne as he sees you enter and says, "Ah, my heroes! Have you secured our lair- I mean, glorious living quarters? My underlings reported two mushroom-eyes fleeing the ruins a while ago. It's a shame you didn't slaughter them all, but since you've returned in one piece, I take it all went well?"

Kka can't help nodding in agreement to Boss Skrwang's comment about it being a shame they hadn't slaughtered all the morlocks. She looks at her colleagues as she replies. "Yeah, well. Appaarently some of us haave a thing about finishing off the enemy after they've surrendered. Nobody's perfect, I guess." While the rest keep talking with Boss Skrawg, Kka collects Tanji's wrapped body from where she'd left it. She begrudgingly thanks the mitflits for taking care of it while Kka and company were busy dealing with killer dolls and giant vampiric leeches.

With the help of her craftier colleagues, she fashions a makeshift sled litter for the body. After a long tiring trek dragging the litter all the way to Otari, Kka finally makes it back to the Crook's Nook exhausted. With a final effort, she places Tanji's body on a table and slumps into one of the chairs. Yinyasmera comes out of her office and pats Kka affectionately on the shoulder as she looks down at her dead henchwoman. "Gorul, Shad, and Ziskilly told me what happened. I knew you'd bring Tanji back if it was the last thing you did."

"I very nearly didn't maake it back, Yin. That plaace is swarming with naasties and there were a few times there when things got real ugly." Kka sighs. "We'll haave to go baack again after we recover a bit. There's something real baad going on down there and what haappened at the graveyaard is only the beginning. If we don't root out whatever evil is stirring under the Gauntlight, I think Otari will be in big trouble soon."

After a day of rest, Kka gets back to her training with Yinyasmera and her Osprey Club colleagues. She works hard at learning how to get out of the way of attacks aimed at her, and her skill at dodging strikes slowly improves. When not working her day job as a waitress at the Crook's Nook, she's often seen reducing her 100ft dash times in the fallow fields outside of town. At night, she sneaks into the Dawnflower Library, and buries her beak in medical books trying to figure out how to patch people up faster after a fight.

One day, as she's wiping down a table at the Crook's Nook, she catches the familiar outline of Lough come through the door in her peripheral vision. It felt like weeks since she'd last seen the changeling and she was oddly pleased to know he was still around. "Heeey, big maan! How's it haang..." Kka is momentarily at a loss for words when she spots his shiny new arm, but soon recovers. "Whaat the frick, Lough! Whaat the heck haappened to your arm?" She gives his new appendage a closer look, and recognizing some of the bits from the morlock junk pile, squints skeptically. "Is thaat thing just for show or does it actually work?"

As Kka considers how she might go about disabling a Borbo-powered murder arm if Lough were to lose control of it, she hears the bone-chilling hiss and looks up to see a Giant Undead Leech of Doom rearing over them. "Oh nooo. Not again!" She takes a step back and reaches for her shortsword, but only finds the dirty rag she'd tucked into her belt. "Bugger!"

Giving the creature one of her patented glares-of-death, she says, "Out, OUT! We don't serve your kind in here!" But knowing the futility of such an act launches herself on the beast and tries to stab it with her beak.

Instead of tasting some nasty undead flesh, she finds herself flat on her face on the floor besides Lough. "Whaat the frick!" She quickly jumps to her feet. "Whaat's going on here!"

Perception (Disbelieve Illusion): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

"Heeeey! Thaat's not real. It's just a trick." She then remembers hearing Kvit's voice just before the attack. She narrows her eyes suspiciously. "Kvit? You better put your toys away before someone gets hurt."

The "leech" vanishes in a puff of multi-colored smoke as Kvit begins to chuckle. He walks up to them grinning. (An unusual sight for the normally serious wizard)

"Oh mymymy. Giyozara, did you see their faces?! I feel like that made the week of studying worth it."

He sits down at a table, clearly pleased with the spell's performance. "I found that one in an old book on Xanderghul. The book mentioned that one key to believable illusions is to know your audience. The cat is not afraid of the mouse."

Embarrassed, Lough just gives Kvit a look...

...then makes an excuse "I knew it wasn't real" "Oh but did you..." "please leave me alone" "as you wish for now" mouthing the words silently as he converses with the other voices before noticing that he is being observed once more "Um, excuse me, like I said, I knew it was an illusion..." "it did look real though" "not that you can tell the difference" "I said begone!" his metal fist suddenly raising into the air - Lough changes the subject.

"Turns out old Borbo is an excellent Power Source - just though I'd give it a little test if we are going back in there" doing his best to save a little face...

Kvit's off-handed comment makes Kka pause for a moment. "Would I really? Why am I not so sure? Why aren't I afraid of death anymore? Why? What happened to me down there? Why can't I remember?" She thinks hard trying to grasp at a faint memory of something, but it is just out of reach.

Kvit's touch pops her out of her introspection. "Whaat?" She looks down at her blurred outline. "Wow! Thaat's sooo cool!" She waves her hand in front of her face staring at it as if in a trance. "Not sure whaat it's good for, but it sure is a neat effect."

Kka replies to Giyozara. "I don't care about Absaalom; Absaalom can take care of itself. But Otaari is a different matter. If we don't look out for it, nobody will. It may not be the greatest plaace on Golarion, but it's my home now and I'd raather it wasn't wiped off the map by some evil ghost b!+¢# and her spooky lighthouse."

Kvit's whiskers droop slightly at Kka. "Well, uh, it should make it harder for anyone try and hit you?"

He looks over to Cherry again. "Of course. Bureaucracy exists in every organization. They won't act until it's turned into a wide scale catastrophe, if at all." He sighs, then stands and slams his paw on the expertly cleaned table.

"That means it's still up to us! Are we ready to head back down?"

Slides Loot sheet

After taking a week off of adventuring, you decide to head back to the lighthouse. Once you're near the entrance, you feel an almost imperceptible vibration of magic in the air, like the air right before a thunderstorm, but subtler. After a few Detect Magics, you determine that the Gauntlight is slowly gathering power again. You have no idea when it's "full" again, but you definitely get the impression it'll be bad once it does.

Near the front door are several bags with notes tied to them, all addressed to "The Mitflit King Lough". The first reads a follows (in Undercommon):
"Thank you for the spiky stones. If we encounter the bear again, we'll throw them at its face and hope it'll choke on them. Also, we found several mushroom-eyes who said they've been exiled from their lair. They're not as bad when they're not trying to kill us, and one even made a replacement arm for Gigix. It even has a built-in catapult!"

The second note reads:
"Mission successful! Gigix almost got eaten again, but then he stuffed the spiky stones down the bear's throat, and it cried out in pain. We felt sorry for it, so now Degra has a new pet. If it wants to eat us again, we simply show it the spiky stones and it whimpers and does as it's told.
We also noticed you didn't pick up yesterday's mushrooms, we hope King Lough is still okay."

The third note:
"We're getting quite worried about King Lough. Have we displeased you, King Lough? We're very sorry if we did. We shall double our mushroom gathering."

The fourth bag is considerably bigger. Its note reads:
"One of the mushroom-eyes suggested King Lough abandoned us, but that's not true! We stabbed him to death and fed him to Bernard. The other mushroom-eyes kept quiet after that.
PS: Bernard is Degra's bear."

Bag number five:
"We are tired, but we shall not sleep until we have pleased King Lough."

Bag number six, written in a sloppy hand:
"Tired. Bernard is fluffy and Degra keeps sneaking naps on his back, and we don't dare to wake her. Bernard keeps shooting us foul looks and licks his lips as he does."
The sack also contains some rocks, bits of tree bark, some dead bugs, and some teeth.

The seventh bag is mostly empty, and the note says the following, in a different handwriting this time:
"Hi, this is Degra! I normally don't write, but my friends all fell unconscious a while ago, and I have to babysit them. Sorry we didn't gather many mushrooms again, but I see Narlak is facedown in a puddle again, so I have to stop writing now and save him."

Bernard, the perfect name for a bear.

Kka rolls her eyes as the mitflit story unfolds. "Sheesh! Messing with morlocks and bears? It's amazing there's any of them left alive. Kvit translates the Undercommon as accurately as possible.

"As annoying as they are, it seems a little useful to have a scout force to let us know what's been going on. I'd almost say they're starting to grow on me. As long as I just interact with them via these notes."

Kvit seems ready to face new horrors below.

Sneakers scurries around, seemingly in a better mood than he was when they had left before. "Hey boss, let's get to it. I don't like being up here with those mitthings. They give me the creeps and they probably want to eat me."

Kvit digs around for a few vials. "Here Kka, two more vials of poison. Hope they'll be useful."

Kka looks at all the expectant faces. "I guess thaat's decided then. First Lough deals with the mitflits and then we head down the same stairs the morlocks tried before being sent paacking. Sounds like we'll be dealing with a whole bunch of ghouls down there. I hope they're a friendly bunch or things could get ugly <Ark ark>."

I went back to the post where Graulgust describes what they found on the next floor down and it seems that the first cross-shaped room we run into contains He Who We Do Not Speak Of, who appears to be (morlock?) exile. The next octagonal room to its North is filled with mist and tentacles. The big round room to the south of the main hallway is a reading room and the bigger room to the Northeast is a ruined part of the library where ghouls are repairing part of the floor. Both rooms and the hallway all apparently contain ghouls.

According to this post the ghouls are a big group of undead librarians that call themselves the Cult of the Canker who are trying to revive someone through foul necromancy. I guess our job is to ruin those plans, hopefully before they revive that someone, though I doubt we'll be that lucky.
