So here I am again feeling far more comfortable with the system. I currently run this game right now with a pbp and have a homebrew game at my local, so I have decided to run a second to have the two as a sort test of things and to have some more fun with those I didn't pick. Below will be the rules for character creation.

Races: Any from Core or Advanced
Classes Any from Core or Advanced (Other classes and archetypes will be considered in PMs)
Background: Taken from the players guide and can be foundHere. Do be creative in adding to it as well and make the characters feel unique.
Starting Gold: 15GP
Freebies:
Lore: Absalom is given to PCs for free
Choice of either Lore: Detective or Guard
x2 Handcuffs
x1 Slightly Used Baton
x1 Shiny new badge with your name on it.
Flaws or Quirks:Does your character have an addiction, an interesting quirk, some sort of tick? Will be used for RP.

Alignment ways I'd say I prefer those of a more Lawful orientation, but those of a more Evil bent I'll allow, just as long as your character isn't a necromancer trying to become the next bonafide liche.

I'll also work with the background, including adding in a bit of extra bits in the downtime.

Posting:1/ a day during the week, no posting on the weekend Saturday and Sunday.

I'll be accepting 5 applicants and will have a cut off at 11:59PM EST September 30th. Selection will be on 11:59PM October 1st. Good luck detectives.

In THAT case, I will dust off Evindyl!

Very very similar concept, but, I'm going to go with an air-support approach.

Questions (which I may have asked before):
Free Archtype y/n?
Ancestor Paragon y/n?

Really glad to see this post :)

You make this substitution only for the first Strike you make against the creature this round, not any subsequent attacks.
When you make this substitution, you can also add your Intelligence modifier to your attack roll instead of your Strength or Dexterity modifier, provided your Strike uses an agile or finesse melee weapon, an agile or finesse unarmed attack, a ranged weapon (which must be agile or finesse if it’s a melee weapon with the thrown trait), or a sap.
If you’re aware that the creature you choose is the subject of a lead you’re pursuing, you can use this ability as a free action.

Thank you for the submission. To let you know, I am also looking for a backstory write up of some kind and quirks and flaws of the character for a full submission. As well don't forget to pick a background as well from the players guide linked above.

Dotting for interest.

I have been gaming for over 20 years (and I'm currently GMing a 1st edition game on this board), but I've only played a single one-shot of Pathfinder 2E. As such, would you be okay with a newbie to the system applying?

On the topic of backgrounds: can we only take a campaign background, or do we have access to the other backgrounds as well?

Like Tara, I'm not terribly experienced with PF2 but have plenty with other systems. If this is a problem please say as much.

Background:
When she first saw a bird with a broken wing Ingra picked it up carefully and took it to her mother to get it healed. It died en route, which cemented her determination to learn the secrets of healing herself and set a pattern of melancholy thoughts - which she came to enjoy, after a fashion. Ingra's tastes run to dark colours and sad music (yes, she's a goth dwarf.)

Combining her studies with weapons and magic took up pretty much all of Ingra's time growing up. She never did learn to read people or how to interact with them much successfully. She's a sucker for a sob-story and was encouraged to move to this new district guard rather than continue interfering with her colleagues with overly sympathetic reactions, or her academic understanding of laws.

She's also much impressed by displays of dedication, whether to causes, religion or bodybuilding - she worships Kurgess.

Crunch:
Ingra Redhand, NG female dwarf (strong blood) magus 1
Background: learned guard prodigy
Perception +3 (darkvision)

Chain mail flexible, noisy
Wooden shield hardness 5

Handcuffs x2, badge
(14.5/15 spent; 5 sp remaining)

AC 17 (19 w/shield raised), F +7, R +3, W +7
HP 20
Speed 20'

arcane cascade: 1 action after casting spell or spellstrike, +1 damage until encounter ends.
sparkling targe: while in arcane cascade w/shield raised, shield AC applies to magic saves
spellstrike: 2 actions, combine a strike and a spell which takes an attack roll (use melee attack, spell only applies to target struck, any attack roll after at max MAP); requires recharge (1 action or cast a conflux spell) before spellstriking again.
conflux spell: shielding strike, 1 action & 1 focus, combine attack and raise shield or cast shield
Spells: 1) shattering gem*, shockwave, summon construct, restyle 0) shield, message*, prestidigitation*, read aura*, gale blast*, sigil, ray of frost*, detect magic.
strong-blooded dwarf: poison resistance = 1/2 level (min 1), each success or crit success save reduces poison an extra stage.

I'm just as much a noob but I am willing to get my hands dirty into GMing. Background come from the Players Guide, however there is some the book recommends. If you do take one no from the book let me know. 1st party only.

Backstory:
In Rahotep's home nation of Osirion his family were peasants in a village near a small tributary of the Sphinx, growing fruits on some nobles estate. It was a meagre existance, and the work was hard but it paid enough for the bare necessities. However even that was not to last. The tributary suddenly dried up, and the nobles simply moved their plantations somewhere else. This left the farmers working there destitute, starving and desperate - desperate enough to stowaway on a ship from Sothis to Absalom docks.

The city however wasn't much easier on the family. There isn't much farmwork to be done in the city after all. Rehotep's mother and father turned to sleeping on the streets and manual labor, and after a few years, so did Rahotep himself. Sometimes, when the work dried up they went to the gilded temples in the Ascendant Court, only to be either thrown out or given scraps barely enough to feed a child.

Unlike most Aasimar, whose celestial traits appear early on during their life or even at birth, only during Rahotep's teenage years did signs of his heritage appear. Soon after instead of getting thrown out of temples as beggars he and his family were getting invites to live among the clergy of this god and that. They accepted, of course, and Rahotep started studying to become a cleric of Serenrae. The only thing he truly learned during that time however was the depths of corruption around the Starstone Cathedral.

Even so, he kept on working and studying for the good of his family, always keeping his fathers holy symbol of Horus hidden in his robes to remind himself who he is doing this for. Eventually, he managed to earn enough to buy a decent house for his aging parents and quit the clergy to enroll in the guard. His long experience in the gilded halls of the temples and his distaste towards religion quickly led him back to where he spent so much of his life, but this time to deal with the evil and corruption seeped in the district.

I actually was going to go down the Secrets of Magic road also, but then I thought through the flavor being a witch would add, so that's where we are.

I just need to add in the free Lore skills and the gear, then I will be able to adjust his background a little. The witch facet will probably become part of his parents separation.

Also sounds good to me. Just make sure you make an alias or something so I can keep track of things and get to backstories and sheets quicker.

Sorry, neglected to check on AoN where the magus came from - I hadn't meant to challenge your guidelines.

and yes, that last bit is the Flaw/Quirk that GM asked to have included: the character gains nothing but flavor from it :) will have some backstory up shortly

Just realized I wrote the title as Absalom instead of Edgewatch.

LOL and I have been using AoA to abbreviate it, even though I had previously used that for Age of Ashes.

Evin Starr

Backstory:
Galadryn delighted in her son’s early displays of magical power … his father however, did not. As a mother, she adored seeing the boy reach out his hands, to have his toys, his snack, his blanket simply float across the room to him from wherever they were. As a wizard, she knew her son was both powerful and much more Elven than she might have hoped as well. But at a very tender age, Evindyl heard, “Stop this! I know you can control his powers; stop him, or I’m leaving.”

His father left. Evindyl vowed to end that pain though, and he embraced every shred of knowledge he gleaned from his mother, her library, and her magic. Their bond grew year after year, and she expressed overwhelming pride in her son every chance she could. She knew the “scars” could be frightening when they developed, but Evin’s magic delighted him as much as it did his mother. Being the child of 2 half-elven parents was a rare thing; his mother clearly more elven, his father clearly more human, Evin was proud of his heritage in spite of his father’s departure.

The sting came when they discovered the runescars were a “gift” from his father’s lineage: while there had never been casters in that family, not in the traditional sense, their close proximity to the ancient magic of the Runelords allowed many of his father’s forebears to cast a spell or two. Evin being Evin, crushed that his father might never know the real origin of his early powers and be proud of them, looked at his mother and said, “MY runescars will glow more brightly than any runescars in New Thassilon.” His mother smiled, knowing despite the obscurity of his future, he would build power any mage would envy.

What did not occur to Galadryn in the moment, is that her son had just made a pact. In that moment, Evindyl swore arcane fealty to his Runescars, and “Wyrd” arrived in their home shortly thereafter, a shimmering swirling runestone who ‘spoke’ to him. Evin began learning at an extraordinary rate. Although she knew pact power was technically witchcraft, she also knew it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. She watched for those who might harshly judge her son and made it clear that he was as much a mage as she was … just a little different.

The Learned Guard welcomed Evindyl; it was a place where they evaluated magic based on skill, not source, and they relished all of the things Evin (and his familiar) could do. He never looked back. When the time came he was told he would be assigned to the new Edgewatch, and he could barely believe it.

Sounds interesting. I'll run up a character

I'm interested as well. I submitted Erriot Foost in your previous recruitment. I have a new idea for a character though. A sorcerer, most likely human, with the sleepless suns star background. The background needs some extra details. Thank you for running a second table.

I had previously applied for your other recruitment for this same AP but backed out as there was another that I really wanted to get in on and you both had very close recruitment times. I did not get into the other recruitment so I'd like to offer Dario Zuz again.

A good ol' swashbuckler build for your perusal. I put his quirk and backstory into the profile properly now.

Hi all! I've been away from the boards for a long while. I've found some more time to play Pathfinder again but I still haven't given 2e a shot yet.

My favorite class has been monk since I first started playing 3.5 dnd and I'm considering how well it might fit in to this AP.

My first thought was to make a gentle giant type character who can wrassle beasts to the ground, but is otherwise jovial, patient and wise. I was thinking about the Sleepless Suns Stars background, but I also want to keep backgrounds different. I'm also thinking about making him an orc, just because it feels like more fun to play a character who looks big and scary but is actually a big softy. Thinking about Harbor Guard Moonlighter. Grizzled Muckrucker is a more interesting background to me, but it would change the character a lot.

Alternatively, I might want to play a Champion or Fighter with one of those two backgrounds.

I'm just a person and not in any way relevant, but I love the idea. I can't remember if it's in the Player's Guide or what, but there's a whole thing in this AP about non-lethal damage, and martial arts are uniquely suited to subdual versus killing; I think a monk could be brilliant. Not sure if they still get a speed bonus in 2e, but they are well suited to chasing people too.

:)

Thanks! Yeah they get the speed bonus starting at 3rd level. I like having the nonlethal option available and I would probably look for grappling options in the future.

I was thinking about going mountain stance, though which would reduce mobility. I could do wolf or tiger stance instead for better pursuit.

Yea it is automatically assumed unless otherwise you all are for the most part doing non lethal damage. These hits don't receive the normal penalty for attacking as so.

Felix here is Tarondor's submission! I'd love to play!

I'm still learning the system so I might be missing something, but how does your character have so many feats? I didn't think you could get general feats at level 1 as a dwarf, and it seems like you have an extra skill feat (I'm aware Recognize Spell comes with your background)

Shield block comes from the magus specialty (hybrid study) of sparkling targe.

Recognize spell from the background.

But you're right, one too many skill feats. Forensic acumen dies, for now.

Rols joined the Muckruckers sadly corruption and betrayal hide around every corner and every shadow. Having grown up in the wilds and not the city caused some disputes between Rols and those that would give him orders as the large orc had almost no filter to speak of. After several years of minimal head way, Rols was nearly driven to walking away from the city altogether. Thankfully, you found an out: an invitation to transfer to the newly formed Edgewatch. Backstory:

"My name is Javor Durrandon. Six years ago I was left for dead in the wilderness by thugs. I was saved by the dwarves of the Highstone clan who taught me their ways. Now I've returned to Absalom and I can no longer ignore the injustices that happen here. I've joined the City Guard to start my path to saving the city, much to the displeasure of my father."

As the heir to the Durrandon tin fortune, Javor's disappearance and subsequent return had caused quite a stir in the gossippy apartments of the Petal District. Tylan (the Durrandon patriarch) was relieved and angry to find his son not only alive, but in incredible health. He was even more upset when he found out his son wanted to join the guard. Still attempting to salvage that disastrous career move, he set Javor up with the highly First Guard in an administrative position.

Unwilling to exploit his high status above the common folk of the city, Javor moved to a lowly assignment with the newly formed unit of Edgewatch. Furious, his father cut him off from his wealth, which stings a bit, but he's learned to manage without fruit tarts and caviar.

The nobles he used to accompany remember him as a spoiled playboy with a cushy career ahead of him and are shocked at the aescetic monk he has become. Growing his beard and murmuring his odd devotions. Spending time with the peasants and the dwarves. "He's all but become a vagrant," they say. "Oh poor Tylan, his firstborn heir has become a bit touched in the head hasn't he?"

Javor's desire his to fix the rot in the city, starting with himself and now the guard. But a sip of elven vintage here and a taste of jalmerian cocoa there can't be all bad, can it? Just a taste, that's all. And it would be impolite not to drink in the company of fine dwarves. He definitely won't let himself get out of control.

Flaw:
Just a taste: Javor has a bad habit of overindulging that might be open to exploitation after having repressed it for so long.

@Ingra Redhand: I didn't think I should clutter up the joint just to say "ahh I see." SO I waited until I had a character ready to say, Ahh I see. Magus is a really cool looking class. I was thinking it would be cool to run one in this AP to be an intelligence based character who can mix it up in melee.

@Elbowtotheface: Haha, I was thinking of almost making the same character as you (even the same background) but I kept feeling like I was trying to force it narratively. After I saw your orc, I gave up and went a different direction.

I also have a more dex-based Token Ex-Con monk in my back pocket which may fit better as there are a few bruisers in this thread. I also had a Lotus Guard rogue I was working on if that's more interesting. I've been thinking about playing a cleric of Sarenrae which might be interesting opposite Rahotep.

jajajajajaja

I was just about to type the same thing.
Are just general questions okay?
Like I was wondering about money: do they need it to start out, or should we gear up, or what?

Gear up normal starting cash of 15 GP.

Thank you! Will do :)
There was a really cool thing I was debating about getting, like a tagger/tracer sling bullet that lights up the person it hits.
I will totally buy one now, yay

Shadow Lodge

Can I also post my cleric of Sarenrae actually? Or would that be unfair to put up two characters?

I'd say for ease, pick one or the other.

Shadow Lodge

Right, will do. I'll think it over for a bit.

Here is my character, Agatha, an Orc witch
Agatha

Background
Agatha was born into an orc tribe in the cold north. She was the only survivor when her tribe was destroyed by a Frost Giant raid. She fled south, seeking a new life, but found orcs are rarely welcome. She eventually made her way to Absolem. There she slipped in, and made a living as a witch, earning scrapes here and there. She was discovered by the Learned guard, who were a bit impressed by her skills and intelligence. She was recruited into the watch.
However, an Orc was a bad fit to many of the situations she was involved in, so she was reassigned.

Agatha is somewhat taciturn, using few words. She is looking for a place and believes the watch is that place. She considered it her new tribe, in a way. She is quite knowledgeable in matters arcane, occult and matters legal. In her time she is also conversant in the society she lives in.

She keeps a sickle, a last remnant of her tribe, and is covered in tattoos and scars. She looks quite intimidating, but she is oddly kind. Her familiar, Orco, is a monkey who found her. She is not certain who her patron is specifically, but thus far she has had few issues.

Criminals worst nightmare. An Orc with a badge

Happy Friday Team!

Next question GM: anything you could suggest for us that you & Table#1 have learned from experience over the last few weeks? Skills gaps, gear gaps, etc? LOL maybe disparities you would like to avoid on Table #2?

Just thought I would throw that out there.

Have a great day,
Evin

I like to work with my players for anything they'd like to see happen with their backstory to incorporate into the game. What are the life of the officers outside of working the guard. Take it like a little personalization for everyone involved. I also like a lot of flavor in the classes and how a character can solves challenges that come up.

Sometimes I might play it a bit loose and make things a little easier if it feels cool or right (I'm not cruel), but I sure as Hell am not afraid of try to kill my players in a fight or if they make a bad mistake. Combat should be a good challenge, not a slog. As well I champion in this AP ways at times of getting around combats in clever ways.

I am also still fairly new, so if I pick you and I forget a rule or two, just let me know and I can always correct. I am very open to correction. A good example is some of my players are linking the action for me to the srd, which is an easy way of helping out.

Background:
Gilgalad grew up, like many orphans, on the streets of Absalom, however, he had the good fortune of crossing paths with a Sword Knight of Iomedae. A half starved boy, as his mentor retells it, was spied stealing a crust of bread from a merchant at the farmer's market, so incensed was the merchant that, once caught, he began beating the thief bloody. However the young boy, caught red handed, suffered his beating in silence. His mentor stopped the merchant from felling the youth, tossing him silver for the copper's worth of bread that had been stolen.

He questioned the youth, as to why he hadn't fled the beating, or cried out for aid, the youth, through bloodied lips, replied only that he knew it wrong to steal, but the food would fill his belly, and the merchant was just going to discard it by end of day. The Sword Knight then offered to pay the boy a living wage, if he would stable his horse, feed her, care for her, and groom her.

In time Gilgalad grew to a broad shouldered young boy, and would often clean and polish the weapons of the Cathedral, however, he became enamored of one, a curved blade unlike any he had seen before. When he looked on it, it was pitted and rusted, but in his spare time, he would sneak to the armory and care for it, carefully returning it to it's pristine condition. As he did so, he would often recall hearing a voice, lifted in ephemeral song echoing in that darkened chamber.

When asked of his obsession with the blade, he would speak that he knew it had belonged to an elven warrior, a woman as deadly, as beautiful, a warrior, a paladin, devoted to the Inheritor's cause. His peers would laugh off his fanciful tales, and the anointed would remind the boy that to speak false was akin to a lie. And so he kept the presence to himself, listening to it as it spoke in gentle words, urging him towards the blade, asking him to take it up once again, to take it into the light, and let it ring once again against blade and shield.

In time, he began to sneak into the yard at night, to practice forms and patterns he had watched the knights teach their squires. One even, his peers spied him sneaking away, and sought to teach the young lad some manners, and so set upon him with axe handles. Unskilled and unable to defend himself he was bruised and bloodied when they were called to their morning devotions. Asked to identify the culprits, Gilgalad simply said he had received the injuries training. And who, the priests inquired, was the knight who took it upon themselves to train the stable boy? His response was simply, Lyllandra il'Arnyn. The name gave the priests pause, for she had been a paladin of elven descent, who had served the church for decades before her death some hundred years ago.

It soon became apparent that the curved blade that had called to the boy, had been il'Arnyn's blade, returned to the chapel and stored in the vault, abandoned and forgotten. The blade was taken from the boy, and returned to the vault, for there seemed to be some history between the elven knight and the Knight Captain. When the blade was, once again, found in the young man's possession, he was accused of theft, of a relic, no less. He was to be branded and removed from the chapel, he stoically bore the punishment, but as the poker approached his hand, a blade flashed out knocking the instrument from the acolyte's hand. The phantom of il'Arnyn stood aground, defending the boy, claiming him as her own blood, for she had failed her squire, and with that looked the old Knight Captain in the eyes with regret and sorrow. And to pass on, she must complete her duty, and forge the young Gilgalad into the man, she knew, him to be.

Not one to be denied, the Knight Captain informed the young man that such a venture was unseemly to the church, and possibly heretical. Not willing to allow the youth to achieve his destiny within the chapel, he sought out the Sally Guard, there to earn a Knighthood as a member of Absalom's Watch. However, his ambition exceeded his skill, even though aided by the phantom within his blade, he failed to master the horse, perhaps they sensed the ghost's presence and were unnerved by it.

So now, given the opportunity, he has enlisted with the Edgewatch in hopes of earning glory and redemption in acts of charity and kindness for the city that birthed him.

Concept at this point is a LG Half Elf Summoner, with the Devoted Phantom Eidolon. Taking the Sally Gard background, means Gilgalad would start with Shoddy Half Plate, giving him an AC of 13! But, at 2nd level when he picks up Champion Dedication, that will round itself out. As a Half Elf, his Ancestry Feat would be Elven Weapon Familiarity, giving him the Elven Curve Blade, as a simple weapon, so he could use il'Arnyn's sword, not as well as a fighter, but well enough, at the least, and it would increase from Trained to Expert, when Summoner's simple weapon proficiency increases.

So basically, he has a permanent flanking buddy in his Phantom, Lyllandra, and he can use that to his advantage along with his limited spell selection, essentially being elven magicks she has taught him from beyond the veil.

His sheet can be found here.

Let me know if the concept doesn't work, or if there is something mechanically wrong with the build.

Interesting line up. Learned Guard seems to be popular as always. Surprised to see a Sally Guard.

@Daniel Stweart make suure to include a background, quirks/ flaws.

Same goes for all. Really like to work with quirks that players have for their character.

Hey good morning :)

How quirky in that case? Like I would be happy to take Evin's quirk to like the Linus' Blanket level if it would be fun; like, I can see him getting to the far side of almost unhinged if he couldn't interact with his Runescars. Like losing a limb, even if he knows factually they are still there.

To the comical to the serious. Any sort of stereotypical detective or cop trope you can find in fiction is welcome.

A bad habit of self monologuing?

LOL now I want to watch Incredibles ...

:)

It was a dark and stormy night in the big city. I was finishing up some paperwork, with a glass of dwarven whisky to help the process. The chief said my reports were always the most interesting. I'm not certain if that was a compliment.
I looked out the window at the lightning and rain, when I saw a woman walk past. My keen deduction skills lead me to conclude she was tall. This was because I work on the second floor.
Moving over to the window, I started to hear the screams from below. I sighed, shaking my head. Another magical mistake to correct.
This city was getting stranger. This was only the third weirdest thing to happen today. The paperwork on this one was going to be annoying.
