In a PBP game, that's a GOOD habit.

Everytime I even read the word monologuing, I want to submit a character named SYNDROME

Not actually monologuing ... pre-game exposition :)

Helping Mom:
Long hours seem shorter when you choose them. In this case, it mattered. It mattered that, for whatever reason, Precipice was being rebuilt. The Precipice Quarter fell and fell hard during the quake. Galadryn & Evindyl hadn’t lost their home, situated on the border of Precipice where it becomes Eastgate, but so many families had. The rebuild brought jobs and hope to the neighborhood and the whole city. He was glad to help.

His mother had actually been directly hired to help with the rebuild process. There was an entire Arcane Council which planned magical strategy for what needed to be cast at what time etc. so that the destruction could be erased and the Festival could take place. It was a huge project. Serving in the Guard, Evin wasn’t posted to the Radiant Festival grounds, but there was nothing stopping him from going to Precipice after his shifts, checking the boundaries for them, setting Wyrd to patrol the area after dark, and generally watching over many of the mages while they worked.

He loved the opportunity to support his mother, but also, he relished seeing her in action. Sure, he watched her study all the time. But she never allowed him to adventure with her, and certainly never took him on protection assignments. This created a first-hand experience for him to see her work. It amazed him. He knew he wanted to be like her his whole life, but seeing it was an entirely different thing. As the Council met and executed their plan, the Precipice Quarter really was transformed. The Radiant Festival became a reality after 200 years!

Coming down to little over a week. I'll have an updated submission list up soon.

Free archetype was mentioned early on, but just based on cursory reading that should be used to kind of "theme" a game. What sort of free archetype should we be allowed to use? Just anything that feels like it should fit with the theme of guards/detectives?

That's always been how I have seen it, and that's certainly how it is positioned for the new Strength of Thousands AP. I will admit, for this AP I had planned to use it to develop Evin's runescars, but I'm good with detective stuff too.

AS long as it is thematic to your background I will okay it.

Shadow Lodge

After sifting through archetypes I'm not particularly attached to anything. Jalmeri Heavenseeker seems to be a slight spoiler (and maybe a little too strong?), and Edgewatch Detective is literally tailormade for this AP. Dandy or Vigilante seem like they'd be interesting for my character as a poitical scion, although Vigilante kind of has some problematic implications as a cop. Loremaster might also be interesting for a detective. I was looking at Bastion dedication earlier as an option to make my shield more useful, but I was hoping for some kind of ally protections earlier which is why I didn't factor it into my buildpath at first. Cleric might also be interesting as an interesting exploration of his adopted faith and traditions, but it also might be kind of cheesy.

Just airing my thoughts. Feel free to give suggestions, criticisms or ignore me entirely.

Also, monologue. I blame Chillblame for this. (More of a prologue actually, but whatever)

Prologue:

Portrait

I’m a foreigner in my own city I thought as I paced the cobbles in the spattered rain. I scanned the grotesque display of wealth that surrounded my childhood. The Petals district was extravagant with its beautiful cobblestone streets, magical lamp posts of wrought iron, ostentatious houses and apartments with decorated walls and manicured gardens and lawns. I quickened my stride toward my destination, ignoring the overelaborate trimmings of this place. I composed myself when I could see it coming over the hill at Hippogriff road. I couldn’t read it from there, but I knew what it said.

“FIRST GUARD” And in smaller letters beneath it read, “Absalom Petals District Department office”

I pushed the heavy oaken door open, rain dripping from my cloak as I entered the large foyer. I’ve seen the dwarves carve their own homes, and they would have scoffed at the sheer amount of wasted space. I doffed my cloak and started taking it to the coat closet, but I was obstructed by Mr. Byrne. Byrne was the office’s butler and had thin grey hair, jowls like a turkey and eyes that looked like they could pop out of his wrinkly skull. Byrne had also grown plump in his years of service to the First Guard apparently. His capacity as a butler meant he likely never missed meals and rarely had to perform any grueling or dangerous labor.

“I’ll have that put that away for you sir.” He said with a curt, professional smile, “No sense in having to trouble yourself.” He looked down a hallway at a young boy who probably should have been minding the coat check but was cleaning the wall and clicked his tongue at him. The boy nearly jumped and started to hurry over to Mr. Byrne. I interjected, “No need, I’d prefer to do it myself.” The butler replied adamantly, “Sir! I will not hear about it, this is our duty, you tend to yours.” I sighed, unwilling to argue the point further. I tipped the boy a gold piece quietly with a wink as I handed him the cloak. His eyes went wide. Was that too much? Too little? That was probably the cost of one banana, wasn’t it? I should probably learn how to manage money after today, it’s likely Father isn’t going to take this well.

I start toward the labyrinthine hallways toward my end goal, but Mr. Byrne insists on escorting me. I supposed he took pride in his work, as evidenced by the offense he took when I suggested putting away my own cloak. He was otherwise amicable and helpful iin a way that the old me would never have appreciated, or even noticed. The hallways were richly appointed with a warm cherry mahogany floor, gold trimmings and crown moulding, paintings, ceramics, detailed maps of Golarion and other expensive objects to prove the distinction of the place. The Highstone Masters would have had several words to say about the display here, grotesque being tamest among them!

We arrived at the door appointed with the sign “Capt. Erebus Brightlancer” in gold flowy lettering and blue paint. I was pretty sure that wasn’t his real name, and I was equally sure he made it up himself. Still, he was my captain for the time being, and I needed his help for the moment. Mr. Byrne knocked at the door for me and announced, “Erm, Mr. Javor Durrandon to see you, Captain Brightlancer.” If he felt ridiculous at all saying the name out loud, he was pretty good at hiding it.

After a beat from the other side of the door I heard, “Let him in.” The inside of the Captain’s office was no less ostentatious than the rest of the building. Solid wood desk, books that he’d probably never read lined the shelves, a drink table with several crystal glasses, one of them used even though it was still midmorning. I knew he wasn’t working cases through the night. This wasn’t that sort of department, and the Captain wasn’t that sort of detective.

“Durrandon,” Brightlancer spoke, facing the glass window behind his desk. He was holding a glass in one hand, whose contents I couldn’t see from the angle I was standing. Brightlancer looked like the sort of man you might expect to be in charge of a city guard. Square jaw, thick blonde hair, broad shouldered and muscular, but just aged enough to make him look distinguished. He spoke slowly, but I detected a slight slur in his elocution. He sighed, “What brings you to my office today?”

“Sir, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the First Guard here-”

“Cut that out.” He swatted in my direction with his free hand, “No pleasantries, why are you in my office this early?” He sounded tired. Maybe drunk. Probably both.

I chose my words carefully, “Okay… with the upcoming Radiant Festival the Precipice Quarter is experiencing a revival. There’s been a call for a new unit and I wanted to ask for your recommendation.”

He glanced over his shoulder at me, “Yeah? Why’s that? This job is going to set your career for life. Kid like youse…” he paused to compose himself, “A young man like you would only be here for a feather in your cap. What’s the prestige of going to the Precipice?”

“I’m not here for the prestige.” I nearly growled, “I wanted to help people. I wanted to help the city. That’s why I joined the guard. With all due respect, working at a desk, however nice, wasn’t what I had in mind. And it’s made me realize… that I want- no- I need to progress based on my own merits, not on my Father’s name.”

Brightlancer turned to look at me fully. He had a baffled look about his face as he scrutinized me. I noted his crystal glass was empty. He looked me in the eye for several more moments until he decided, “Do you really believe that?” I nodded. He ambled easily over to the drink table, but didn’t pour anything, then mulled over his next thought and said, “Your father won’t be happy.”

“No. I don’t think so.” I replied. He grinned. I grinned back. But I quickly felt my brow furrow in concern, “You aren’t worried he’ll try to blame you? Retaliate?”

“I’ve been playing the game for a while. I’ve got a favor or two lying about. Other patrons in my corner. He can’t come after me.” He remarked nonchalantly. “I don’t expect anything from you kid, just don’t lose faith.” He poured a drink. Then another and handed it to me.

I smelled the smokey liquid. Dwarven whisky, I noted the oak and hickory. “Janderoff... ‘08? That was a brilliant year! when I was 15...” I trailed off, “Well I enjoyed it. But… perhaps I shouldn’t, I’m still on-”

“Drink.” he grunted. I swirled the brown liquor in my glass as if contemplating it, then did as he bade. Doubtless I shouldn’t have consumed it. Then again, it would have been impolite not to, and Captain Brightlancer proved himself a competent ally after I’d misjudged him as a bit of a cad.

Brightlancer raised his glass in a toast and imbibed the potent spirit, “Congratulations Durrandon. You’re the next recruit for Edgewatch.”

you are welcome

And a prologue can be a monologue

Shadow Lodge

And a pox upon ye! ;)

Fair enough. But it's got some dialogue in there, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't count.

a pox can be tricky ... could accidentally turn you into a smurf

a smurf!!! (shudder)

AHHHHH!!!!! The pox has me in it's thrall!

O no....

Honestly not sure why the whole thing struck me so funny ... but the avatar change was certainly cute.

That does NOT mean that I am advocating for Sm*#rfs to be drafted into the Edgewatch, but it might mean that I would let them get off with a warning if they were misbehaving somewhere in Absalom.

I read that in the voice of the Cave of Wonders.

Looks like everyone that's ready is ready. I guess the investigator still hasn't come back and finished up his character. Not a lot of healers in this pool, but since we're doing free archetypes it might be a bit easier for someone (like meee) to pick up cleric or medic dedication healing.

Probably should have altered my submission to not have so much overlap with the other melees at the table but oh well. I like Javor and I'd be happy to play him, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

This is my first character for 2e, so it will likely be rough, but I would like to give it a go.

Divine Front:
Through your deity's blessing, you gain additional spells that channel either the life force called positive energy or its counterforce, negative energy. When you prepare your spells each day, you can prepare additional heal or harm spells, depending on your deity. The divine font spell your deity provides is listed in the Divine Font entry for your deity; if both are listed, you can choose between heal or harm. Once you choose, you can't change your choice short of an ethical shift or divine intervention.

Harmful Font: You gain additional spell slots each day at your highest level of cleric spell slots. You can prepare only harm spells in these slots, and the number of slots is equal to 1 plus your Charisma modifier.

1st (DC16): 2 + Soothe, Charming Touch
Cantrips (DC15):

Domain Initiate
Your deity bestows a special spell related to their powers. Select one domain—a subject of particular interest to you within your religion—from your deity's list. You gain an initial domain spell for that domain, a spell unique to the domain and not available to other clerics. Each domain's theme and domain spells can be found here.

Domain spells are a type of focus spell. It costs 1 Focus Point to cast a focus spell, and you start with a focus pool of 1 Focus Point. You refill your focus pool during your daily preparations, and you can regain 1 Focus Point by spending 10 minutes using the Refocus activity to pray to your deity or do service toward their causes.

Focus spells are automatically heightened to half your level rounded up. Focus spells don't require spell slots, nor can you cast them using spell slots. Certain feats can give you more focus spells and increase the size of your focus pool, though your focus pool can never hold more than 3 Focus Points. The full rules for focus spells appear here.
Additional Feats Recognize Spell, Domain Initiate
Additional Specials Raised by Belief, Assurance
Background Learned Guard Prodigy

I'll have the background and quirk later today.

Shadow Lodge

@Patrick: Did you use Pathbuilder? Makes character creation much easier, especially if you are new to the system. Unless you are going warpriest, going unarmored will actually give you 1 more AC, but judging by the Domain Initate feat, I might guess that you are running a Cloistered doctrine. Unarmored AC would be Trained, and you would be untrained in Armor. Calculation would be 3 (trained adds 2 + level) + 2 Dex = 15 AC unarmored. Armored AC untrained would be 0 (Untrained, do not add level) + 2 (Dex) = 14 AC.

Looks like you just didn't realize that your proficiency bonus should be +3 instead of +2. Your dagger attack, perception bonus, HP, Saves and skills are missing that part. Am I correct in reading that you didn't put training into Medicine and Religion and you're just using wisdom?

Also in 2e the saves are not based on spell level. You have a general class save DC which is your class' key ability (wisdom) + proficency. So all the DCs for your spells are 17, and any attack rolls you make with spells (for example, Divine Lance) are at +7 as well.

Raised by Belief is a general Background from the Core Rulebook, but since we're using a player's guide, you can just pick one of the ones from there (Learned Guard Prodigy in your case). Can't use both.

Anyway, 2e is quite different from 1st edition Pathfinder, so a lot of this is a lot easier to deal with through the pathbuilder app. I recommend giving it a try.

Liberty's Edge

I expressed interest in the first table but was too busy to assemble a character at the time. I'm still interested, we shall see if I can put something together before the deadline tomorrow.

Last time I was thinking about a tengu Investigator, I'll probably continue with that. Ex-con Token Guard background, probably alchemy methodology. Fulfills the skills/face role, and will be going in to the Marshal dedication for a very support-focused character. If we're doing free archetype, will probably do Medic w/ class feats and Marshal with free archetype feats. Support for daaaaaaays.

Since I can't access that right now, I'll go straight into the character work.

Backstory:
Elisabela had always had an fascination with tragedy. Not that her family had much of that in her; her parents were supported in every way one can. It just happened that those around her have been struck with misfortune. Kids she had known from school either died tragically or have had beloved friends and loved ones meet a similar fate. None of which was her fault, but her proximity was not lost on her. She even sought to solve certain mysteries associated with them, one of which did succeed in discovering the killer.

Once she came on her own, she sought like-minded company. She found that in the church of Naderi, a house fascinated with romances gone awry. Wanting more, she set herself up as a detective, seeking cases to crack as well as delve into the mystery. Eventually, the later work became her primary one and it even earned her a spot in Edgewatch.

Her eccentric nature and deadpan may put off some of her co-workers and her fascination of death and romance may raise some eyebrows. But beneath that dour personality is someone genuinely eager to solve cases.

Quirk:
Elisabela likes to take things with a devil's advocate sort of way that may be off-putting. Also, when she gets into a case, it may affect her ability to stay refreshed.

@Patrickthekid: Couple of things still:

Not a mistake per se, but the math around pf2 assumes that each PC is at least optimized in its key ability. If you go with a +3 in Wisdom, things are going to be pretty hard for you. I'm not sure how true this is in practice, but I'm just going off of what I've heard/read because this is also my first time with 2e.

Naderi's interesting, just wanted to build a character around this lesser known God instead of using a Shelyn or the like? Wow I just noticed she has a Harmful font. Spicy.

Saves look good. Melee bonus looks good. Skills look good. HP looks good (I think I mistakenly said in my last post that you add your level as a bonus). AC is only 14 for some reason, pretty sure it should be 15. Spell DC for your cantrips is the same as for the rest of your spells. Its 16 since your wis is +3 and your proficency bonus is +3 (2+level).

To be clear as well with spell list; your deity only adds its spells to your list, doesn't give you an extra slot to work with.

Acquisitives

It looks like this scenario can use some ranged and a slight skill monkey, less of those have been submitted, so I submitted a Ranger. Full Character is there when you click on the Alias. The quirks and stuff are there if you carefully read the background.

Background Crunch
Max Willard was always the hunter type. Patient and waiting for the animals on hours each day. In fact, that is not only how he provided for his family, but for a few of his friends as well. One day he saw the add for the Monster Hunter's Guild. He bragged to all his friends that he is going to hunt monsters. Max Willard always liked to brag and rumble. Sometimes he would never should shut about hunter stories, the detailed process of skinning an animal and how he set up the traps. In fact he has annoyed all of his friends and family just a little of his talk about hunting and the wilderness. Monsters he thought, he could handle this. Max Willard expected to see nothing more a Bigfoot, or a Jackalope, or the Chupacabra. He also traveled with a group of other hunters, so there was no real danger he thought. The group started off small, the leopards and lions, the not monstrous monsters. A week in, they went off hunting a wolf. They were told this wolf terrorized the town, and Max and his crew were surprised. They thought they would be dealing with packs of regular wolves, dire wolves, or even winter wolves. They ran into one single wolf, and it was a large as everyone said. One wolf versus five of us, well humans are smarter than animals, aren't they? It wasn't an ordinary wolf however, it was a werewolf. Max hid and and shot at it from afar. They killed the werewolf, but three of the men died that day. The fourth one survived, but was bit, and he asked Max to kill him before he could turn the next night. The werewolf turned human when it died. Max's ability to hunt effectively over the next few nights wasn't the same. Even during the day, Max was hesitant to hunt. He could barely provide enough for his family, let alone provide for friends or even charge for strangers. Max kept thinking to himself, what if there are other were creatures and he shot a wererabbit or a were whatever, and he just killed a human. There was also the possibility of something else waiting for him while he hunted. Max does want to get back into hunting though and even hunt down monsters, without being afraid. This is a test for Max to shine and for him to excel at his job once more.
