Greetings, fellow seeker of adventure!

I am Sheila Heidmarch; Venture Captain of the newest Pathfinder Society lodge - and the only such lodge in Varisia at this time. You have come to my attention as someone who possesses a certain amount of skills and interests that make you an excellent addition to a highly specialized team I'm putting together for a matter of grave import, not only to the Society, but to Varisia as a whole. Please report an hour before noon to Heidmarch Manor- you will be compensated for your visit, but that reward will pale in the light of the riches that await you should we come to an agreement on my proposition to you. I look forward to meeting you soon!

- Sheila Heidmarch

This note has been left behind on your desk, handed off to you by a messenger, or even found in your bag while unpacking for the evening. Will you respond?

Hello Pathfinders!!

I am excited and looking forward to running my first Pathfinder campaign in person, and with those who apply online through this forum. I have been a long time D&D 3rd edition player and DM, but have recently joined a new group that plays Pathfinder and I have offered to DM for them.

- I am seeking 4 Pathfinders for this new venture.
- Since I am new I am looking to use the Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Advanced Class Guide since I have those books in my collection when it comes to Classes and Races.
- For stats I will be using the Point Buy system, 20 points seems like a good amount to have fun with but not get overly crazy. And let's start off with Max Gold for your class seems like it should be enough to get going.
- Be sure to read the Shattered Star Player's Guide before creation. I will be allowing you to pick out a Campaign Trait and a Pathfinder Society Trait from within.
- Also, keep in mind the Goals of the Society: Explore, Report, and Cooperate section of the Player's Guide when creating a character.
- I will be using the Fame and Prestige Point system within the Player's Guide, so that should add some extra fun.

That seems to be about it from what I can see. If there is anything I am overlooking, be sure to ask.

Thanks for stopping by!

Dotting

Just to make sure, you mean you'll be running this in live sessions? Roll20 or similar?

That is confusing, I'm sorry about that.

I will be doing this campaign with my in-person group, but also will be doing a play-by-post group on the forums here. I wish I could edit that line.

Also, I've noticed other recruitments have a deadline. If we have enough Pathfinders come Saturday night I would love to get things kicked off Sunday.

Welcome to the boards "Currently DMing" I was waiting to see the answer to SodiumTelluride's question before I got too terribly excited :)

So Saturday night deadline. A couple of quick questions:

Are you taking the first four character/players who apply? Or selecting from the players who have entered Ideas by Saturday. Or only from the players who have presented full characters by Saturday?

How much background do you want?

Do you have any posting expectations for players or know how often you plan on posting?

Do you want actual pathfinder society characters for organized play with PFS ID #'s or just 'pathfinder' like characters who will work with the 'Venture Captain' in the game.

Will you be accepting: archetypes, spells or gear from outside of the prescribed: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Advanced Class Guide.

Will you be using a map system or will this be 'theater of the mind'?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, Robert, apparently I was wrong in saying "That seems to be about it from what I can see." Onto the answers!

Are you taking the first four character/players who apply? Or selecting from the players who have entered Ideas by Saturday. Or only from the players who have presented full characters by Saturday?

I will select from the players who have submitted ideas by Saturday evening. That should give me time to go through them and select the party.

How much background do you want?

I would like to have characters that are more than just stats on a piece of digital paper. But, I am also okay with a solid concept and have it come to life through the game.

Do you have any posting expectations for players or know how often you plan on posting?

I have not done a play by post game, but I have been part of online forums since the 90s. I am doing a read through of a Shattered Star that is on the boards to help me get a good idea of how this is done. I think that If people were able to post once a day that would be good, that is what I am able to do.

Do you want actual pathfinder society characters for organized play with PFS ID #'s or just 'pathfinder' like characters who will work with the 'Venture Captain' in the game.

I saw the Pathfinder Society organized play section on here, but this is just for fun. I do not know anything about what that really is.

Will you be accepting: archetypes, spells or gear from outside of the prescribed: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Advanced Class Guide.

I think that I would like to stick with those three books that I do own. I only say this because I come from D&D 3rd Edition and I know how cheeky things can get with the years of splat books and magazine articles. This will also help things to not become overwhelming for me as a new transplant to the system. Maybe once we get going and I get a hang of things I would allow retraining of feats and spells and such. Do they do that in Pathfinder?

Will you be using a map system or will this be 'theater of the mind'?

I have purchased the PDF Interact Map Pack from Paizo and was planning on using those maps. I am fairly competent with photo editing software and could add in tokens for the PCs/NPCs/Baddies. Though, just like at the table, not everything needs the grid and "theater of the mind" would work.

Thank you for the questions, hope that clarifies things for you and others. If you or anyone else have any questions feel free to ask!

Thanks!

Howdy!

I started to play this AP with a GM whose style I really enjoy, but I ended up dropping because my wife went into the hospital for a triple-procedure open-heart surgery. For several months, these boards ceased to exist for me. Playing games just isn't that important, by comparison.

Looking back at the campaign, it appears the campaign as a whole failed shortly afterwards, which is really, really sad.

Obviously, I need to redo the mechanics of Estel for your build instructions. Easily done. Just takes time without the software. <grin>

With how common player loss is, though, I would strongly recommend selecting more like 6 or 7 characters for the starting set, probably doubling up on anything critical to getting through the storyline. Certainly not my call, though. Just a suggestion.

I'll post again after completing the rebuild.

Edit:

Hmmmmm . . .. Will be even slower, but will probably be much easier to dig the books out in order to comply with your source limits than trying to do so online.

Normally, I use the Archives of Nethys for rules text, as they are the official host of the Pathfinder SRD. I frequently double-check on PFSRD20, though, because they do a MUCH better job of including errata and other rulings with the rules, but they have none of the setting descriptive terms anywhere in the site.

Neither site does a simple exclusion down to specific book sets, though. <shrug> Thus, pulling the books down should be better.

hey Estel, if it will help any, the books themselves are still listed on the old Pathfiinder Reference Document.

I will be building a human brawler, duel archetypes, Mutagenic Mauler and Wild Child

Looking back at Estel, there's basically no part of the build that won't have to be replaced. That's actually kind of impressive. Heck, he was even built with the Elephant in the Room Feat Tax elimination rules. Yeah, just a complete rebuild from the ground up. <shrug>

I would like to submit my character from an old Shattered Star game that sadly died out.

Always interested in getting into Shattered star.

Here's my character Line Tallaksdottor. A Ulfen Oracle of Lore. Who really didn't fit in at home in the Linnorm Kings. So she jumped at the chance to be an exchange agent in Varisia.

Exchange Agent (Linguistics) Although you're a relative newcomer to Magnimar, you're not some naive stranger. You've been sent by the Pathfinder Society lodge in your home country to learn more about Varisia by experiencing the frontier firsthand. After arriving, you reported to the Magnimar lodge and placed your expertise at the venture-captain's disposal. To represent your experience in distant lands, choose a country other than Varisia as your homeland and gain one of the languages spoken in that country as a bonus language (see The Inner Sea World Guide). Additionally, choose one of the following skills: Handle Animal, Knowledge (geography), Linguistics, or Survival. You gain a +1 trait bonus on checks made with this skill and it is always a class skill for you.

Language Humans begin play speaking Common. Humans with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

Lore Keeper (Ex) Instead of encyclopedic knowledge, you learn most of your information through tales, songs, and poems. You may use your Charisma modifier instead of your Intelligence modifier on all Knowledge checks.

Lore Mysteries You draw upon the divine mystery of Lore to grant your spells and powers.

Orisons You can prepare a number of orisons, or 0-level spells. These spells are cast like any other spells, but they are not expended when used and may be used again.

Seeker You are always on the lookout for reward and danger. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Perception checks, and Perception is always a class skill for you.

Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.

Tongues In times of stress or unease, you speak in tongues. Whenever you are in combat, you can only speak and understand one selected language. This does not interfere with spellcasting, but it does apply to spells that are language dependent.

Tongues ~ Aklo You gain Aklo as a bonus language.

Fluff:

Line looks a normal Ulfen woman. Tall, deep, braided red hair and piercing blue eyes. Sadly her habit of falling into daydreams when seeing old items. Getting lost in any book she could lay her hands on. And worst speaking in a dark, alien tongue when upset always marked her as different.

She soaked up as much as she could she could from studying at the feet of Skalds, signed up with the Pathfinders as soon as she could
and accepted to offer to transfer to Varisia without hesitation.

Any problems or questions let me know.

DBH - Looking over the crunch I see the Campaign trait of Exchange Agent, but I do not see a Pathfinder Society trait from the Player's Guide. I will give the character another look over, but I believe it looks good. Thanks!

Krystal Popescu - There are a few things with your character that I am not seeing in the books. I see your Ex-Sczarni Campaign Trait, You have one that is called Seeker and That isn't a Society one from the Player's Guide. I also am not seeing the Unchained archetype or alternate class feature in any of the books, and that might be where the Deft Maneuvers is coming from.

Robert Henry - Sounds interesting, looked up the Mutagenic Mauler and Wild Child and they seem like they will be fun to play.

Estel - Hope all is well with your wife and the recovery. I also agree that real life is more important than games. If something ever comes up if you are chosen please let me know. I would like to read some of the DM style of the one you enjoyed. Could you share a link to that game? Finally... I am sorry for the complete rebuild, but maybe with what has been submitted something else might strike you the right way?

SodiumTelluride here, submitting my half-elf cleric Ellie Dewblossom. Ellie has been chosen by Cayden Cailean, god of bravery, but is not especially brave herself. So she uses a polearm weapon to put herself on the front line while also keeping a safe distance.

I like my characters to develop over time, so my plan is to have her get more tanky and protective. Mechanically, have her either crossclass or maybe prestige into something like Holy Vindicator.

Grabbing my Shattered Star players guide now!

I missed the Pathfinder society feat. Line took Greater Adept of the society as her PSF thanks. I'll get her character sheet updated.

"Currently DMing," I must apologize, this is Robert Henry's character Iradiel. I had originally said I was going to play a human brawler with the Mutagenic Mauler/Wild Child archetypes. I had played one in part of an AP and it was a fun character. But I have went with Iradyiel instead.

Since were only taking four players I felt the front-liner should offer more than just being a bruiser. So Iradyiel is a half-elf switch-hitting Ranger with the Skirmisher archetype. He took the 'Exchange agent' AP trait for linguistics to help with communication.

I still need to finish purchasing 'camping' gear and decide what country he's from and work that into a background. Please let me know if I can answer any question.

Interest.

Well, we're a few years past that surgery at this point. Things have settled out pretty well. I remembered the wrong surgery. As per my apology post, this was her full knee replacement, which my posting history suggests was 13 months ago. She had some recovery problems based on not doing her exercises, but she's gotten past those.

The good news is there's nothing more on the horizon . . ..

The GM whose style I have enjoyed is Jack (last name unknown), who uses the handle "AllenDM". He uses quite a few more alternate rules than I normally like, and can get a little directive about PC behavior now and again (though I have learned with reason), just to make sure that you don't think I think he's practically perfect in every way. He does a great deal of emotive, descriptive text about the environment and people with whom you interact. His custom maps include reference images to help you see things in your mind's eye more clearly. The longest-lived (and slow-moving) game I've played with him is here. As one of the original players in a 3-year-old game, I'm only recently advanced to 2nd level. If I can enjoy the presentation, I don't need break-neck speed.

Estel Cestdelo wrote:

LOL, When you said "Quiet a few alternate rules" I thought "wait a minute I know that guy!" In a World of Xoth game with him. His descriptions, which I believe are 'home brew' not an 'AP' are done quite well.

As for the speed of the game, it moves slow enough that I have to recheck the 'house rules' a lot. Hopefully in this game, with an AP and a normal rule set, speed won't effect the quality of play. Though I prefer games that post at least once a day or faster.

If I were to describe the things I look for the most it a GM it's consistence and communication. What makes it worse is I like to ask a lot of questions.

And rebuilt.

Submissions are awfully Rogue heavy, though, aren't they? <sigh>

Sorry. My last campaign was using different rules. I changed her up. I just need a new trait.

I'm conjuring up a dwarf druid with the monument scholar and beast of the society traits. I would like your permission to take the Ruins Domain.

Estel Cestdelo wrote:

You're right. I didn't realize Estel and Krystal were rogue characters when I rolled up Yennavor. I'm happy to pull a switcheroo and create an arcane caster. It's been a while since I've played one and I have some character ideas that might be fun.

Meetings are heavy today but in addition to Yennavor's backstory I'll pull up some casters and link to them in comments here for consideration. I'm excited for an opportunity to dig into Shattered Star so I'm happy to fill whatever slot is helpful to the party.

Okay, due to multiple rogue submissions, here is an alternate character I could play instead of a rogue. Backstories incoming, I'll be typing as I prepare dinner.

No need to apologize Currently DMing RL has to take precedent, and we can all appreciate having a bad day to the loss of a good friend. Heck, I'd understand a bad year!

No problem! I'll go for the cave subdomain from APG.

Honestly I admire this. I've seen a lot of GM's do exactly what you're describing-- allow one exception, then three, then suddenly lots of people want either rules exceptions or new subsystems used. I like your approach, it's consistent.

Rosalyn Vanderale, human wizard (evoker) 1

Background:
Rosalyn Vanderale is the eldest daughter of Mivonis Vanderale, head of the noble family that controls much of Magnimar's trade. She's the apple of her widowed father's eye, despite her total disinterest in trade. Instead, Rosalyn craves knowledge. Her father steered her curiosity toward magic at a young age, figuring that a wizard in the family would be useful in the future. Rosalyn happily went along with this plan. Magic is fascinating, after all! But she didn't want to be limited by the abjuration and divination focused curriculum at Magnimar's school of magic, the Stone of the Seers. Instead she asked her father to send her to the Twilight Academy in Galduria, a small town not far from Magnimar. He agreed, and Rosalyn spent several years learning the ways of magic there. She decided to specialize in evocation, having discovered a particular talent for the school. While at the Academy she learned about Irez, Lady of Inscribed Wonder, the empyreal lord of scribes, spells, and runes. Given the importance of mystic runes in ancient Thassilonian magic, Irez sounded like a good patron deity. Veneration of the empyreal lords is much more common in Magnimar than elsewhere in Avistan, so Rosalyn sees nothing unusual in her choice.

As Rosalyn's graduation date approached, school gossip turned toward the Pathfinders. There was a new Pathfinder lodge in Magnimar! How exciting! And the venture-captain, Sheila Heidmarch, was looking for prospective Pathfinders. Now Rosalyn knew what she was going to do when she was finished with her basic schooling. She had always loved the Pathfinder Chronicles and dreamed of becoming one, but thought she would have to travel to faraway lands in order to find a Pathfinder lodge. Now she could be a Pathfinder without having to move permanently to a foreign country!

Mivonis was less thrilled when his daughter came home chattering about becoming a Pathfinder. That's such a dangerous profession, surely Rosalyn would prefer something safer? Nope. In the end he gave in and gave her his blessing, as long as she promised to never go exploring alone. That was an easy promise to make. Rosalyn isn't stupid, she knows that a young wizard is terribly vulnerable by herself. She was planning to approach Lady Heidmarch and ask to be a Pathfinder, but apparently the Magnimaran rumor mill was working overtime, because the venture-captain sent her a letter first. How convenient!

Appearance:
Rosalyn is a slender, brown haired human woman with light tan skin and dark eyes. Her mixed heritage is obvious from her skin tone (a mix of Varisian brown and Chelaxian pale) and her sharply defined features (very Chelaxian). She usually wears her wavy, shoulder length hair down, though if she's traveling she'll pull it back in a low ponytail. Neither pretty nor homely, Rosalyn blends into a crowd.

For everyday wear the evoker prefers comfortable, sturdy shirts and trousers in shades of muted purple and blue, with a matching cloak if the weather is cool. Being a member of the Vanderale family, though, there are times when a nice dress is necessary to uphold family standards. She carries a dagger on her belt, with a light crossbow and quiver of bolts on her back and a staff in hand. Rosalyn usually wears a carved wooden medallion depicting a fan of parchment strips inscribed with runes.

Her familiar is a cat named Marius. He has a short, silky black coat with a white patch on his chest. Marius is a very large, sleekly muscular cat, about twenty pounds.

Picture

Personality:
The thirst for knowledge has driven Rosalyn all her life. About magic, about the mysterious monuments of Magnimar, ancient Thassilon, the planes, Varisian history, her fellow nobles... it really doesn't matter what kind of information she finds, Rosalyn wants it all. She's an optimist and a risk taker, delighting in the rush of discovery and danger. Having grown up among the machinations of nobility, she tends to hide her heritage until she gets an idea of how someone will react, and she's always watching to see what any given person wants from her. Rosalyn would rather be judged on her own merits. Someone familiar with the habits of Magnimaran nobility can easily identify her upper crust accent, though.

Stats incoming.

Okay, stat block is in my profile! Except for gear and familiar stats. I figure I can do that if I get selected.

I'm starting to like the idea of my Arcanist character now more than my rogue. Either way, here are some backstory bits for each.

Yennavor (Rogue) brief backstory:

A child of Magnimar's Dockway district, Yennavor has discovered people with heavy coinpurse come swarming if you have antiques with interesting stories attached available for trade.
Acquiring those antiques can sometimes be a bit tricky. Sure, there's loads of stuff to be snatched from various places right here in Magnimar, but that also means someone might come looking for it. Last thing I need is to find out an acquisition was originally intended for delivery to some Alabaster whodiehoo with coin enough to learn my hands are red. Nah, seems like a much better opportunity to look outside of Magnimar or join up with a Pathfinder crew to snag a few trinkets from some forgotten temple or whatever. Maybe even hit the jackpot with some amazing pile of coins somewhere... or, at least get paid to visit some interesting places, introduce them to a new shell game or card trick...

Adrol (Arcanist) brief backstory:

Adrol's father, Cerviel, is the son of a Mordant Spire emissary to Magnimar. He currently holds a position as a magic professor at The Stone of the Seers and occasionally holds lectures at The Museum of Ages.
His Mother, Nithanlara, is a local seamstress and clothing designer who has gained some moderate fame among the recently wealthy citizens now populating Naos where her shop is currently located.
Adrol is the youngest of four children (two twin sisters and one brother). Adrol idolized his much older brother but spent much of his youth in the care of his twin sisters who have earned a reputation as troublemakers, always looking for an opportunity to pull a prank... or in recent occasions, a heist (but that's another story).
Inspired of some work his father was doing related to the history of Magnimar monuments, their history and the magics they posess, Adrol became very interested himself and has become familiar with many, if not most, of the local monuments and the boons associated with each.
Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Adrol has to decided to dip his toes in the adventure life by becoming a Pathfinder.

The real world has to take precedence. Period.

Nobody here's going to be upset about you needing time to address that kind of loss.

If you are still looking I would like to put this on in the hat.

Please see my zen archer for consideration

background:
Yesult was uncharacteristically born in Cheliax as an aasimir and his family being poor hold sold him into slavery at a young age. His master Marlaneus purchased him and entered him into a local monestary. Yesult excelled at bow and became a zen archer. Marlaneus came from a rich family who eventually moved to Magnimar and when the letter arrived although he was called "servant" he still served the family. Marlaneus didn't want to take any risk himself but wanted glory for his family name so would use magic to watch his servant adventure in their name thus sending Yesult to the pathfinder lodge to adventure while being magically watched from a far for the glory and amusement of his "family."

Alabaster outcast(with the above twist)and honored fist for traits.

Rosalyn Are you still looking to take Greater Adept of the Society and Monument Scholar? I put them on the list but I did not see any traits on the profile.

Quonx too Still taking characters through the end of today(Saturday). I will begin going through the list tonight and finalize it tomorrow and we can get things kicked off.

Edelsmirge I did not go and look for Yesult. I see that he is Aasimir and it is not an available race. Please see the books allowed in my recruitment post. Once adjusted, please put a link to the character in the submission.

I think this is the smallest applicant group I've seen for an AP run on here. Does this AP have a reputation I don't know about, or do you think the limited build options kept people away?

Alright, the block is complete now.

I think limitations on the build is one part. But also the fact that I am not only new to the PBP format and to the Pathfinder system, but not 3.5, is another bigger part.

I do appreciate those who are taking a gamble on me. I am excited for this journey and where it will take us. I have seen some past PBP APs on here that are like 5+ years, and the thought of that is exciting!

Curious questions, I'm sure the limitation on build narrowed it a little. As possibly your experience did. But we all start out somewhere right?

In six years I've been in many AP's only one has made to the end. It was that GM's first AP on the boards and she pushed it through in less than two years. So anything can happen.

Either way, thanks for running the game. We players appreciate it.

I had not posted a background, personality or appearance for this iteration of Iradiel so I thought I should do so.

Anyway, today is the last day. Good luck and good gaming all.

Background:

Iradyiel was born and raised in the capital city of Tamran in Nirmathas. His parents Iandoli and Kyras Madras, are half elven pathfinders who met adventuring and were Married. When they learned they were expecting their first child, his older brother Elathras, they returning to his fathers home in Tamran.

Both of Iradyiel’s parents were members of the Ashfall lodge where he and his siblings spent a lot of time. Iradyiels older brother Elathras was two years older than he. Three years after Iradyiel was born, his parents had twin girl Maddela and Raddela. Then three more years their last child, a boy named Eldlen. Who the other four saw as a little spoiled.

Elathras and Iradyiel grew up close. Elathras being the driven older brother and Iradyiel the light hearted younger sibling. Iradyiel followed Elathras into the Nirmathi rangers and then into the pathfinders. His parents, concerned that he was just following his older brothers dreams arranged for him to be sent on a 'young pathfinder exchange' to Magnimar. Elathras for his part was excited to see a new place and experience life on his own was too happy to go.

personality:

Iradyiel appears to have a carefree and relaxed personality. Having grown up in his brother's shadow, he seems quiet and willing to follow more outgoing folks. He makes friends easily and is quick with a joke but still able to share his opinion. Though a bit of a legacy behind his parents and brother the pathfinders have found him curious and cooperative.

On the Myers Briggs scale Iradyiel is an Adventurer

appearance:

Iradyiel is clearly a young half elf, at twenty two he still does not need to shave. While having grown to his full height of six foot, he looks like he can still use a few pounds. He has the green eyes and straight brown hair, which he wears long, of both his parents. His high cheekbones, narrow nose, angled chin and elongated ears emphasize his elvish heritage more than any of his siblings.

Knowing his travels would take him into unfriendly area's to a member of the Nirmathi rangers he downplayed his appearance by wearing foriegn gear. His traveling clothes were mostly tans and browns, instead of green. he wore a taldan breastplate instead of light armor. Carrying a falchion forgoing carrying a longbow knowing he could purchase one in Magnimar.

Ack, I can't believe I forgot my traits! (Actually that's a lie. I can totally believe I forgot my traits.) They're on my profile now.

I think limitations on character build discourage some people. Personally, I see it as a challenge. And I'm always happy to support new DMs! Finding a DM is the hardest part of starting a game.

Here is the profile for my character. Khyron 'Kuno' Aendar a Druid with the Cave Druid archetype and the Night Subdomain.

Background:
Kuno was born from the Dwarven community of Magnimar. All of his life he has been fascinated byt the various monuments. He would try all manner of foolishness to activate their magic and receive a boon. It was usually in the dead of night that he would do this. Over time, he developed an affinity for the dark and the creatures of the night. Shadows and crevices are as much a part of the natural world as fields and forests, after all, and being a Dwarf, the tunnels and caves of the world are his inheritance.

Personality and Appearance:

He is dark of hair and beard and his face is stark, resting in an expression of sternness. A loner and an introvert, Kuno is ill-practiced at social discourse. Those who get to know him and earn his trust will find a deep reservoir of warmth and loyalty. He can also be somewhat morbid without realizing how far his sensibilities are from those of other people even other Dwarves.

Camris here, with my entry.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Iradyiel Masdras That is very cool. I decided to go through it and it seems that I am a Campaigner: ENFP-A / ENFP-T. I'll have to read through and see what that actually means.

I have collected the list of completed characters below. These are all the ones that have been submitted by Saturday. I am going to go through them and select our party today. I appreciate everyone who put forward a character. I'll be on a little bit later today with my selection.
