@Adam: I'm going to drop out mate, struggling to get my wacky conceptuality up and running. Will keep an eye on what you have planned down the line.

Cheers

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sorry to see you go. I've got another 5e game in the works that I hope to run after this one. I'll shoot you a PM when I've got that up and running. In the mean time, hope you have fun in whatever games you're in!

Please do chief :)

With UA being a possibility how about Revived rogue? A recently dead person walking around is always funny (Uma Thurman from Kill Bill 2 comes to mind).

On the other hand, I already have DnDBeyond access and hate to deprive someone of that amazing treasure! The more people who have that, the more the 5e community here grows.

@mishima: Revived rogue looks good. Can't wait to see what you come up with that one.

I suspect that Nessis, if selected, would be something of a straight man. At least unless/until he lets loose his yuan-ti characteristics. ;)

Here's my submission but I want to caveat that if you get more than your desired number of players and have to choose, I drop my submission. I want someone to get DnDBeyond if they want/need it.

Obsidian Blackbird McKnight:

Nilelane, N Drow Elf Revived Rogue 5
12.18.14.13.13.11

Brief Personality:
Nilelane is essentially a talking zombie, barely able to mumble words out of her dirt filled throat sticky with blood. She has given up trying to commit suicide so many times the poor girl has taken a certain 'back-seat' approach to the existence she has...things happen but she rarely has much of a reaction. You could excuse someone for thinking she didn't have much brain matter up in that gaping hole stretching through her forehead...but she is no fool. Despite her current macabre condition, she is still grossed out fairly easily.

Memories of her former life are fleeting, sometimes days will pass before she has another...but she is beyond sadness or longing for the past. Her culture has been wholly lost, or at best/worst only vaguely remembered in wierd sadomasochistic flashbacks. Sometimes she believes she is truly in hell.

Her name just seemed right and might not really be it, translating exactly as 'Obsidian Blackbird McKnight' in common.

Brief Background:
It's good Nilelane can't remember how she died, as it was quite gruesome.

During a surface raid, the team of drow commandos she was leading was set upon by a vicious manticore. Although the fight was epic, they never truly had a chance against the wicked monster. Nilelane was one of the first to be mauled, bitten and clawed in a hungry rage at a high altitude...then dropped to a bone snapping death.

The battle cleric brought her back just in time to feel the sting of 8 foot long iron spikes blast through her body, one in particular right between her eyebrows. Again the cleric felt compelled to attempt to save Nilelane, but was herself killed moments before the last syllable of the spell could be uttered.

Nilelane's corpse lay there on the side of the mountain for days, months...when perhaps nothing more but the whisper of a passing wind completed the acolyte's reviving spell...bringing her back again.

Questionnaire
- What does your character look like? What do they wear?
Nilelane looks like a fresh crisp apple that has had its first bite-across her midsection is a large chunk removed in the shape of one set of monstrous teeth marks. Also quite noticable, is a line of holes starts right in the middle of her forehead and proceeds down across the rest of her body, where the manticore's iron spikes shot straight through. Her gait is jangly, haggard, and mysteriously fluid as if she has broken bones because, after all, she does. Her eyes are grey and vapid with apathy.

Death girl wears the same outfit she died in, a drow acolyte's vestments, but it is so torn and decomposed by the mauling and sunlight it resembles little more than dirty leather scraps. The fact that she is drow might be the last thing noticed, given all the grime and dried blood covering her skin.

She used to wear a little bandana to cover the hole in her head, but she stopped caring.

- What is your character's biggest fear?
Nilelane doesn't understand how or why she exists in this state. Her biggest fear is an anxious expectation that she is here for some grand reason that hasn't revealed itself. Cats with man-faces also inexplicably perturb her instincts.

- What is their favorite food?
There is a drow dish which closely resembles Haggis. It consists of Rothe stomach, soaked in salt water for a minimum of 12 hours and then stuffed with a mixture of rothe liver & heart meat, suet and diced mushrooms. It is then baked and served in the form of thick slices. The drow serve this dish either highly spiced or with a tangy sauce, Nilelane prefers the latter...ground fire lichen to be precise.

That was back when she actually needed to eat, of course. These days when she tries it falls out in awkward places.

- Can you or your character cook? How good are you/they?
I can cook meat but little else (I once put ramen in the microwave without water). Nilelane is an amazing cook, she just doesn't remember.

- What do you expect from me as the DM?
Fair arbitration of the rules, not creating new rules on the fly (ie in the middle of my turn) to suit you. Carrying the narrative along when players drag.

- What kinds of humor do you like?
Wordplay especially. Then exagerrated, over the top, impossible things happening. A third type of humor I don't really know the name of, but is exemplified in the movie Funky Forest by Katsuhito Ishii.

hp: 4d8 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 6) = 17

Updated submissions list.
@Atlas2112: Don't sweat the stats for now. I think Vrog made an excellent suggestion about how to arrange things to get them to work. If you want to continue the discussion, then shoot me a PM. While I still think that you could make the first set of rolls work, I'm willing to hear you out on this if you have a compelling reason to go with the second set. Part of the fun is seeing what you get with the rolls, so I'm not even going to consider the point-buy option.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

nice thing about 5e is that it's less "must be this tall to ride the ride", number-wise. You can get by through level 20 with a 16 as your primary stat and still be plenty effective.

Just a reminder, recruitment ends this weekend. If you want in, now's the time to get on the list.

Here's my application. (I tried very hard to use another class than bard, but I didn't manage to make anything else work in my (pigeon) brain... Ok, to be fair, druid could work too, if that's an issue.)

The Pigeon King:

Character Concept: Corso, The Pigeon King, Changeling Bard of Lore (could be Valor)

STR: 11
DEX: 16
CON: 13
INT: 12
WIS: 9
CHA: 15

Personality

Corso is best described as taken by ‘The Imp of the Perverse.’ His life on the streets has given him a unique perspective on life, death, the meaning of both, and the social order. And he has come to the conclusion that neither life nor death mean much, and that the social order needs to be turned on its head.

He loves birds, pigeons in particular, for which he build rookeries on several rooftops across the city. He talks to them as often as he can, and that is how he has learned magic. He has worked hard at training his pigeons to carry messages across the city, but has had much more luck with the young urchins that thinks he is the King of Vagabonds and serve him with great fervor, as long as he pays them.

Corso is easy going and makes friends easily, or so it appears. However, his Changeling nature and his hard upbringing makes it hard for him to be authentic, as that has never meant anything for him, except sure death. His hardwired survival instinct is to seem open, but never let down his guard and never reveal who he truly is.

Background

Born in the street, born an orphan, and born without a face, Corso has a gift for surviving by escaping notice when it serves him. His first ‘mother’ told him he was the son of a pigeon and a rat and that he would rise to rule one and destroy the other, and bring the city to its knees, replacing the richest with the poorest. He decided to believe the fable and turn it into his legend.

Questionnaire
- What does your character look like? What do they wear?
Most days, Corso dresses as a fop, a bravo with an attitude as sharp as his rapier. His hair and looks he grooms to perfection and wears a bright red velvet turncoat over a white silk shirt and cravate, though his attire has seen better days. He hopes to find a new coat soon, as even the young ones have started to comment on the holes and the smell.

When he becomes The Pigeon King, Corso turns his head into that of a pigeon and wears a dark cloak. From afar, he looks a bit like a pale Kenku.

- What is your character's biggest fear?
Being alone and unloved. Being understood? Discovered? He hates rats, and will go through great lengths to be rid of those that cross his path.

- What is your favorite food?
Corso enjoys breads, which he loves to crumble in his fingers and turn, when the bread is hot and fresh, into small balls, which he gulps with abandon. Otherwise, he is happy to peck at whatever looks eatable.

- Can you or your character cook? How good are you/they?
Corso can fake most things, and he can fake a decent meal. His talent is to enliven a dish with subtle additions, with great decor, with elaborate decorations, and turn taste into a secondary concern.

- What do you expect from me as the DM?
To run the project from beginning to end. To be patient when players are off and nudge them on without being judgmental. To play along with players foolishness, letting every impossible become a possible but with a cost.

- What kinds of humor do you like?
I have enjoyed tremendously the style of Chris Perkins in Dice, Camera, Action. Otherwise, I enjoy the ‘humour’ in Fargo and the Simpsons, as well as the Three Musketeers.

Not exactly stellar but not unworkable either... I'll have a ponder.

[edit]Human fighter... Bogdan the Turnip Boy? Flop McFoppington? Yet to be seen.

Assuming full hp for first...
4d10 ⇒ (7, 1, 3, 5) = 16

Wow... could be a short career. That's some shocking HP rolls there for a martial character :D. Reroll the one?

Eureka! A concept I wanted to play for a looooong time that may not normally fit but in this Gonzo game involving a dinner party? Perfect. Standby!

Grand Lodge

I have a D&D guest level account.

I'm pretty sure I can't enter a XgtE class. Just the basic stuff... and I'm not sure that includes bonus level 1 feats.

Apart from spending is there a work around for this situation?

Grand Lodge

Here's the UNCOMPLETED character. I'll finalise if I can find a work around...

Name TBA... maybe Tiara Yoshinaka from an old character

Is this a FR base? Kara-Tur... or Golarion? Minkai. Earth? Japan.

'Straight Man'/'A fish out of water'

The straight man is a stock character in a comedy performance, especially a double act, sketch comedy, or farce. When a comedy partner behaves eccentrically, the straight man is expected to maintain composure. The ability to maintain a serious demeanor in the face of even the most preposterous comedy is crucial to a successful straight man. Whatever direct contribution to the comedy a straight man provides usually comes in the form of deadpan. A straight man with no direct comedic role has historically been known as a stooge. Typically he is expected to feed the funny man lines that he can respond to for laughs, while seeking no acclamation for himself.

I will play the character a lot like Kuroda from the 1971 movie Red Sun, but not so 'heavy'... maybe a little towards Jackie Chans Rush Hour with a heavy dash of literalism.

In such films as Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, Toshiro Mifune played characters who were often comically lacking in manners, but replete with practical wisdom and experience, understated nobility, and, in the case of Yojimbo, unmatched fighting prowess. Sanjuro in particular contrasts this earthy warrior spirit with the useless, sheltered propriety of the court samurai.

- What is their favorite food?
Sushi. Sadly in this part of the world far from home, he can score raw fish but it's just not the same as back home. Particularly with the lack of Soya and Wasabi etc.

- Can you or your character cook? How good are you/they?
Rice and mediocre 'field cookery' are the limits of this guy's ability. Maybe he was Shanghai'ed because they thought he COULD cook something exotic.

- What do you expect from me as the DM?
Really just regular posting and occasional prodding to keep the game moving. The players can make magic happen if everyone just keeps it going.

- What kinds of humor do you like?
Stand up (particularly non politically correct humour) is a fav. of mine. I dig on South Park, Family Guy (American Dad never really made the list for some reason), etc. Sitcoms are cool. I did like TBBT. Buddy action comedies like Rush Hour, Bad Boys etc are good. I love Mel Brooks and Monty Python.

I have Xgte and you’ll have access if selected.

I'll finish him up :)

+1 Longsword is a must. Because it's a katana it can cut through tank armour plus [insert weird arse katana geekery here]...

Unsure on the other uncommon.

Also Vehicles Land (can I trade in for something like Calligraphy tools? He's not a wagons and carriages guy)

I think that'll be fine.

Just a reminder, that there's only one more day before submissions close!

Good luck to all!

Just realised I put 4d4 instead of 4d6. Lol, what a mistake-a to make-a! Trying again:

4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 5) - 3 = 14
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 4) - 4 = 17
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 1) - 1 = 12

In combat he is in his element where all other concerns and considerations are forgotten and he can focus on victory.

-Background
Yattarou is the third son of a minor samurai. He was sworn to the same Daimiyo as his father and brothers. Having little in the way of prospects and being overly sincere he approached his assigned roles (be it guard or in the rare battle as a soldier) with complete sincerity and little self regard. As a result he rose up beyond his brothers stations.

In leading a pack train against lands owned by a Wu-Jen that his Master had declared 'Outlaw' he was teleported to a strange land. Over the course of a year he's made new friends and learned a new language and has NO freaking clue how the hell to get home.

Questionnaire
- What does your character look like? What do they wear?
When not travelling or anticipating trouble or war he wears a kimono (all of which are becoming more and more worn), with katana, wakazashi and Tantō. Otherwise he is dressed in his O-Yori armour. Both unfortunately draw comedic attention from the locals. He tries to be good hearted about it. He is shaven and well groomed... by Japanese standards. Again, creating a culture dissonance.

He stands about 5'8" tall with a whippy muscularity. His head is shaved samurai fashion. It is well tended. He often has a heavy wood ribbed fan Silk fan, much patched, in hand which he uses to fan himself when confused and needing time to think.

- What is your character's biggest fear?
That he will never get home. He is failing at his role being here.
