It has been quite some time since any of these Seekers last saw a missive like this: no matter where in the world or beyond they were, a letter was handed to them by a courier, and it bore the seal of the Decemvirate. The summons requested they go directly to Skyreach immediately.

*

“Greetings, Pathfinders,” says a man wearing a triple-spired helmet as he strides purposefully into the room. The helmet marks him as a member of the Decemvirate, one of the enigmatic leaders of the Pathfinder Society. Until I started prepping these scenarios, I was actually unaware that the Ten each had their own helms and didn’t all look the same; the image in the Character Profiles is that of a specific member of the Decemvirate—this one—rather than what all of the Ten look like. “You are here because you are the finest that the Pathfinder Society has to offer. Time and again, you have been entrusted with tasks of utmost importance, and you have always carried them through to success. I have personally summoned you here with yet another perilous mission—one that requires great discretion. As I am sure you have heard, the nation of Lastwall is reeling beneath the onslaught of an undead invasion, triggered by the release of the Whispering Tyrant from his prison.”

Knowledge (local) 10:
Within the past few months, rumors have spread like wildfire that the Whispering Tyrant has been freed and that the nation of Lastwall has fallen to the lich’s power to the point of a mass evacuation of the country; people have even taken to calling the former bulwark against the Tyrant as the Gravelands.

Knowledge (history) 10:
The Whispering Tyrant is one of the most infamous liches in history.

If you exceed the DC by 10+, open the spoiler below

Spoiler:
Tar-Baphon was an immensely powerful wizard who terrorized Golarion about 3,000 years ago, conquering nations and ruling with an iron and merciless fist. His reign only ended when the god Aroden slew him personally. But death at the hands of a god wasn’t the end of the Whispering Tyrant, who eventually rose again as a lich. Again, he conquered the nearby lands and re-established his rule. After almost a century of crusades against him, heroes were finally able to imprison him within the tower that had been the seat of his power—Gallowspire.

“The majority of our Pathfinder forces have been dispatched to deal with this grave threat, which leaves the Society open to threats from other enemies. These scenarios run chronologically parallel to Siege of Gallowspire, which is what the Decemvirate member is referring to. In particular, I have received word that Grandmaster Torch is once again on the move and working to capitalize on the current crisis. Although Torch’s past is complicated, his wanton disregard for bystanders and increasingly aggressive gambits against the Society have left us no choice:”

The three-flanged Decemvirate member takes a deep breath as he says his next words very slowly and with unwavering seriousness. ”The time has come to kill Grandmaster Torch.” He pauses to let his words sink in.

”We’ve long wondered where he acquired his most damning intelligence, and in the past year we identified his principal contact: a gnome named Eylysia who was once a member of the Pathfinder Society. She is not the same justice-minded visionary that she was in the Society’s early days. It appears that a combination of estrangement, Torch’s influence, and perhaps even the Bleaching have left blood on her hands—a great deal of blood. Together, the two of them are planning one last attack that could destroy the Society as we know it. At this point it’s clear that even in apparent isolation, Eylysia poses an ongoing threat to the Society she once championed.

“Although Torch remains elusive, we have learned that Eylysia has hidden herself away on Mediogalti Island. I have arranged for you to be teleported to Azir, where a ship waits to carry to you to Ilizmagorti, a pirate haven located on Mediogalti Island. Once there, seek out the villa of Stanton Strake. He is a retired pirate captain who once served as a contact for the Pathfinder Society. Strake keeps abreast of Pathfinder news, and I believe he is in communication with Eylysia. Use Strake to discover her whereabouts, then confront her to learn Torch’s location. If she proves unwilling to return to face justice, eliminate her. The Pathfinder Society can no longer afford to have enemies fomenting discord in the shadows.

“A final word of caution, Pathfinders. As you are likely aware, Mediogalti Island is the main stronghold of the Red Mantis assassins. Any Pathfinders discovered on the island are summarily executed. The assassins have considerable resources, both magical and mundane, that they use to ferret out spies. There are few places in Golarion more dangerous for a Pathfinder agent to travel. Be sure to take every precaution to conceal your presence there.

“Now, I’m sure you’ve heard this far too many times during your days with the Society, but are there any questions?”

A tall, lithe tiefling speaks without looking up from his book in the corner. Red Mantis, huh? Sounds interesting. I've always wanted to visit Mediogalti Island. He stops for a moment, turns a page, then speaks again. I'm Zanice. His eyes never deviate from the page.

Suddenly shifting his attitude, acting like an entirely different person, he stands up, looks directly at the group, then draws and presents his sword before speaking in a much more assured tone. I am Nephilim. We will find all enemies of the Pathfinder Society on this cursed island and slay them!

Like a switch, Zanice reverts to himself, averts his gaze from everyone, quickly sheaths his sword and sits back down, reopening his book before mumbling Damn Neph, you lost my page again... He pages through the book until he finds his place and carefully places a small scrap of paper into the book before stopping.

The Whispering Tyrant, one of the most infamous Liches in history, is free, and we go to pursue a vendetta against Torch? He shrugs and looks at the sword, whispering What do you think Neph? Any questions?

He stands straighter again, What can you tell us about Stanton Strake? then takes another moment in whispered consultation with the sword and you can hear them disagreeing They never give us anything worthwhile. Why do we keep asking? He looks up at the Decimvirate member, Do you have anything to aid us on our journey?. Another whispered consultation, You mention magical protections. How powerful are the divinations on the island? Do we think a simple Nondetection spell would be sufficient or do we need something stronger?

”Questions? Oh dear, where to start?”

A tall Taldan man lounges gracefully on the couch, his clothes somehow perfectly disarrayed to match his tossed-back chestnut hair. A crooked smile lights up the room as he continues in a drawling, careless tone.

”I suppose it would make sense to ask just how our dear Grandmaster is capitalizing on the tragedy in Lastwall to begin with. And why must he die now? Have we made amends to Eylysia now that the truth of her unjust exile has come to light? Has anyone even bothered reaching out to her and Torch, or is it simply more convenient to paint them as villains and wipe your hands clean of the matter? How will we recognize our fellow pirate Stanton Strake? How will he know us to be from the Society and not merely cunning assassins come to strike him down? Speaking of which, does the Decemvirate have ideas for avoiding the notice of the lovely inhabitants of Mediogalti Island and their oversized cockroaches? And any words on why they might find such seekers of truth so distasteful?”

Sir Hendric uses his Knight's Pennon of Battle before the briefing, to gain the benefits of Heroism for skill checks.

The knight stands just over six feet tall with broad shoulders, flowing blond hair, and shining blue eyes. His armor is well-polished, and the holy symbol of Iomedae adorns his shield.

Really, RNG? He's only from Vigil with a lifelong goal of redeeming or destroying Arazni.
So great is Sir Hendric's anger at the destruction of his home country that he temporarily forgets all the historical details about the Whispering Tyrant - only that he must be destroyed.

The knight looks angry. "Why am I called here? I should be at Gallowspire. YES I have heard about Lastwall. I know I am but one man, yet I have slain demon lords. I could make a difference. Let us finish this matter with all haste and then I will join our forces in Lastwall. Defend and avenge my home."

He settles down and listens to the briefing.

At Arnaut's questions, Sir Hendric waits for a response and tries to judge if this mysterious figure is lying or being misleading in his claims about Torch's planned attack against the Society.
Sense Motive, Heroism: 1d20 + 29 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 29 + 2 = 45 +7 more if opposing a Bluff. Sir Hendric is predisposed to treat the claim as 'unlikely' given what he knows of Torch.
Even if the masked figure seems to be telling the truth, that does not mean the facts are correct - there could be another figure spreading disinformation about Torch's plans. A certain other master manipulator who got away... Sir Hendric continues to seethe with anger thinking of that one.

A chelaxian man with fine clothing and obviously fiendish features wears a sad look on his face upon hearing the news. He contemplates carefully before adding.

" I don't think I've met most of you before, but I'm Venture Captain Peter Zarr. My friends call me Pete, and I'd like to think that includes most pathfinders I've worked with. I've made a career in the society summoning fiends and angels alike to intervene and ensure that our agents make it out alive. I was there when Torch completely betrayed all of the principles the Shadow Lodge stood for by stabbing a close ally rather than allowing her to testify, after we'd captured her. I understand how dangerous he is, but are we no better if we decide that we should kill him rather than bring him back to Skyreach to face our justice, if no one elses?

Zanice considers Pete carefully. What the Decimvirate member asks is within the law. I've had dealings with Torch in the past. He has always come with his own agenda that he pursues regardless of anyone else's interests or the costs to them. I have some respect for the man, but can see both sides. I have no objection to killing him, but I expect that won't last very long unless we take further measures to prevent his return to life.

”Unless you are comfortable slaughtering every living creature on the island, I would advise against that; the Mantis own Mediogalti, and you never know if the person on the street is a civilian or an assassin.”

Nephilim wrote:
What can you tell us about Stanton Strake?

”He is an informant to the Society.” I’m actually not given that particular question in the mission briefing.

Nephilim wrote:
Do you have anything to aid us on our journey?

”Unfortunately, no. If I give you too much assistance then I risk you all being traced back to the Society. Besides, you’re all Seekers; anything I could give you would be of minimal assistance compared to what you can do yourselves.”

Nephilim wrote:

Counting this as “How can we conceal our presence?”

“The Red Mantis assassins keep a tight control of Ilizmagorti. They have informants everywhere, so using some sort of disguise would be wise. Certainly you should avoid displaying your wayfinders or any other signs of affiliation with the Pathfinder Society. Magical protections against divinations would also be of service, as the Red Mantis assassins have many powerful spellcasters within their ranks. Interpret that as you will.”

Hendric wrote:

”I understand your frustration, but the Society has sent a major force against Gallowspire; if we sent everyone, then we would leave ourselves wide open to an assault from persons like Torch. You are needed here, not there.”

Peter wrote:

”The longer Torch stays alive, the more time he has to escape justice. The Grandmaster has become too much of a hindrance to the Society to continue.”

Arnaut wrote:
Stuff

Okay, Arnaut asked a lot of questions that aren’t written in and others that he implied but did not explicitly state, so I’m going to count his rapid-fire questioning as two written-in questions:

”What else do you know about Eylysia?”

“She is old enough to have witnessed the dedication of the Grand Lodge, and she was directly involved in the deaths of several members of the Ten. She was banished from the Society centuries ago. For many years, Pathfinders sought to track her down, though none found her. Learning information about her has been difficult. She has not been heard from for hundreds of years, and most assumed her dead. In the intervening time, her treachery was almost lost to memory. But recent events have allowed more of the past’s secrets to come to light.”

”What is Torch planning?”

“Other agents have uncovered preliminary plots against several lodges. However, his exact plans have yet evaded us, and we are bolstering security in the meantime.”

Sense Motive 34 (Hendric already made this check):
The Decemvirate member is withholding information.

The “How does Strake recognize us?” thing is mostly hand-waved.

Marta is a rather severe woman, her face unblemished and symmetrical, but just somehow... off enough to not be attractive. Her skin has a metallic sheen and her hair is pure white, not blond. And then there is her stare. Unnerving. Like the sound of two poorly oiled sword blades screeching against each other, or the sight of a swarm of stirges latched on to some poor unfortunate soul.

She is dressed in unassuming clothes except for an extravagant cloak in brilliant red and gold with the emblem of Ragathiel emblazoned on the back. She carries a longspear, a light repeating crossbow that looks barely used, and a backpack with a number of potions and wands and the like dangling from hooks. Aside from an explorer's outfit it does not appear that she is wearing any armor, though she moves with the distinctive smooth motions common to a monk.

Marta begins the briefing with a heroism and heightened awareness spell going. An aura surrounds her and changes nature as she shifts from shadowy tendrils, to white motes, then metallic stars, and finally coruscating worms. By the end of things, barring any magical misdirection, she will know the alignment of each member of the party - a task she always performs when she is teamed up with a new group.

Upon witnessing the schizophrenics personality shifts Marta rubs her forehead. Why do the Pathfinders hire insane people?

That is why travel time matters. Some spells that we might use to ward against divination - like Nondetection, False Future and Mask from Divination - have expensive material components.
I'd rather Greater Teleport if possible; a week-long journey on a boat with potential spies seems riskier than teleporting. We could pose as Aspis agents or wanna-be Red Mantis recruits, so even if they have wards to detect teleportation we are not automatically assumed to be Pathfinders.

Sir Hendric stands. "We should do any discussion of this mission and our preparations within a Mage's Private Sanctum or similar effect. I would not count on the wards of Skyreach, if it concerns Torch. He may still have ways of hearing what is discussed here. Zanice, if you are going to Zarta Dralneen's office, I expect the Paracountess should have a suitable facility. Perhaps we should all go there."

A very well dressed Andoran bard finally slinks out of the corner. A large viola at his side and a large bow across his back are in stark contrast to his otherwise small frame. His voice is smooth, but filled with mild anger towards the Decemvirate (much like arnaut, but he's definitely not hiding it behind kind words.) "I do agree that planning out in the open is a bad idea. People have gotten into weirder places before with simpler magic than that. If any of you have a sanctum, I'd prefer to talk there." He pauses for a moment before eyeing the Decemvirate member suspiciously. "Especially not in front of one of the Ten. I know several shouldn't even be trusted with their own dagger." Jordan refuses to discuss more or say more while still in the presence of one of the Ten.

Once everyone is inside the Private Sanctum, Zanice addresses the group.

It looks like we have two decisions to make.

First, how do we get there? Options are:
* Take the provided ship and the required week,
* Expend a powerful spell for a Greater Teleport. We can't use Teleport as none of us have ever seen the target. It's possible to use a scroll here instead of a spell slot.

Second is how do we disguise or conceal our presence. There are a few options presented:
* Disguise ourselves using powerful magic (Veil)
* Disguise ourselves mundanely (disguise kits/checks)
* Use powerful magic to avoid detection (mind blank - would need to buy a scoll for everyone at 3k each)
* Use lesser magic to avoid detection (nondetection, false future, mask from divination)

Finally is what is our cover story. I don't think anyone has proposed one yet.

Presuming we have the Private Sanctum set up without including the Decemvirate member...

Sir Hendric finally opens up.
"I don't like this at all.
I have been asked in the past to neutralize threats, destroy demons or undead, or generally thwart schemes. Not once have I been ordered to perform an assassination against a mortal man with a right to due process. I have killed many in battle. That is not our task here.
Our so-called superior objected to bringing Torch back alive. And withheld information about Torch's plot.
We are being manipulated.
I will not assassinate Torch. If he is in truth plotting to destroy the Society, I will stop that plot.
I did not want to voice my objections in front of that figure. How do we know they are actually a member of the Decemvirate? And even if they are, how do we know they are in the right? The Society has been betrayed by high figures before.
They could be a Red Mantis operative sending us into a trap, specifically to eliminate several Seekers.
They could be Torch or an ally of his, trying to determine our allegiance.
Expressing resistance to the assignment to his face might have complicated things. We'll see.

Anyway, to be on the safe side I would suggest not exactly following the path laid out for us. Teleport there. Take a different ship. Wind Walk. Get off the ship and Water Walk to shore. I don't know. I may be paranoid, but after that redacted business... well, you can read my report.

As to disguises, I would say we could pose as Aspis operatives setting a trap for Pathfinders. If the Mantis zealots believe that the enemy of their enemy is their friend. I would say both Veil and a lesser magic for protection against other forms of divination. I can buy a scroll if needed.

I am not a skilled liar. I sometimes know when to keep my mouth shut. But if I am forced to answer questions, there could be problems. I can hide my warhorse through magical means, easing the load on the spellcasters if my horse is just a stone figurine."

Marta agrees to the idea of meeting in a scry proof room. Once there she makes her own opinion known.

"My, my, Sir Hendrik. You are a suspicious sort. But I think we all agree that we are no assassination party. Whatever happens, we will no indiscriminately kill anyone." Marta puts particular emphesis on the word indiscriminately Though, in spite of her impassioned words, her face betrays no strong emotion.

Though it does seem to happen a lot in our line of work. A pity.

"Torch HAS been a pain in the backside. I think everyone can agree to that. And his morals are such that I have no qualms about bringing him in."

"As for what to do to infiltrate, personally, I have no way to disguise myself. I am a fair hand at sneaking, but if we are arriving in a ship we really need a disguise and cover story. Not my usual approach to a situation. Ragathiel is not big on subtlety and I am his inquisitor. Surely with the skilled casters we have at our disposal, one of them can fashion a disguise? We still need to come up with a cover story. Any ideas? As distasteful as it is we could pretend to be hiring an assassin, perhaps on Torch himself?"

Marta does enjoy irony above all forms of humor and for the first time you see the glimmer of a smile on her face.

Peter continues in the privacy of his warded sanctum,
There will be no teleporting there today, at least from my magics, as I did not prepare greater teleport this morning. Regarding divination protections, none are foolproof, and we discussed the plans with the Decemvirate member in the open. He had scrying protections from his artifact, but those would not have extended to us. If you'd like, I'll prepare greater teleport tomorrow and we can go first thing in the morning. This sanctum will last 24 hours, so we have that at least. I don't think any of the diviniation protections enumerated will help at this point, and I certainly don't have the spell slots to devote to them if you want me to a competent ally should we end up fighting Red Mantis Assassins. The only spell that'd surely help, if we could retroactively had it up before talking to the member of the ten, is Mind Blank, and that is beyond my abilities. The idea of posing as Aspis agents hunting for Pathfinders seems intriguing, and I don't have any better ideas. As far as teleporting there, I again ask, do we just teleport in and hope that our story is accepted and that they don't detain the high level party of adventurers that just arrived? I still think the ship is far less conspicous and conceals our true level of strength. I think that any level of protections that could be afforded by other non-detection spells could similarly be had from Mage's Private Sanctum, which I could cast each day on our cabin in the ship.

Peter ponders the island, and the history of the two organizations and how the Red Mantis would feel about Aspis Agents showing up, looking for the Grandmaster.

Knowledge:Local: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (15) + 26 = 41

He adds to his earlier statement, " I've been advocating for taking the ship, but if we are going to teleport there, since we know where we're supposed to go we could simply greater teleport to the villa of Stanton Strake, We could enter invisibly, using Invisibility Sphere, and then use Veil to disguise ourselves as we see fit. As a retired pirate captain and once contact of the pathfinder society, I'm not sure how he would feel about Aspis. "

Peter:

"I'm inclined to agree with Peter regarding the ship," Arnaut chimes in lazily. "Flashing into a villa with powerful magic is likely to set off many more alarms and wards than walking off a gangplank - and it could draw undue attention both to ourselves as the travelers and our destination. And I like whoever's idea it was of stating that we are agents of the Consortium looking to purchase information from Torch. It certainly could help explain the presence of such mighty adventurers on the island. I don't suppose anyone has one of the Consortium's little coins we could flash?" He glances about for confirmation.

"As for the treatment of Torch and Eylysia, I doubt we are hearing even the melody in its entirety, let alone the whole symphony. Let's find out more about the situation - and if our dear Decemvirate is unwilling to share that information themselves, then they can hardly complain about where else we may seek it." He winks to emphasize the pun. "So, shall we gather our things and find the ship?"

Arnaut's vote would be for taking the ship. He's pretty confident in his ability to "spin" the truth to avoid hostilities and charm his way through any investigations into the group, especially if we take some of the disguise/illusion/anti-divination measures discussed above. Not enough gold for a scroll of mind blank unfortunately.

"I don't know at all what sort of teleport-detecting wards Mediogalti Island has. Or if Wind Walk or Shadow Walk would be more useful. But I am not a mage.

Well, if we are to take the ship - as we publicly discussed with that Decemvirate member - then I suggest making it believed that we didn't. We assume there are spies reporting our actions, and we use that to our advantage to spread misinformation.
A public argument in Azir. Our entire group using Greater Teleport in a halfway-private location, such that a later investigator with Detect Magic would find the traces but not think it too obvious. Yet, in fact, we will have only teleported a few miles to an unoccupied area. Then, with my casting Carry Companion on my horse, and Pete casting Veil to disguise us, we make our way back to the port and board the ship.
Arnaut, I trust you can manage that sort of deception?"

Other than that, I am a big fan of Marta's idea to use the boon. Don't know if I have any Aspis coins on my old chronicle sheets and am traveling for work so away from most of them. I do have a very expensive Aspis badge on a recent (PbP so therefore on my computer) chronicle sheet, but it is out of my price range.

Sir Hendric is worried that was not actually one of The Ten, but a Red Mantis operative sending us into an ambush. But in the interest of moving this along let's set that possibility aside and take the ship.
"I will have a similar disguise, and be the dumb brute force of our squad. With as little talking as possible."

Alright, so veil to look like Aspis agents and some kind of anti-divination magic cast about a day away from the island. I would like to know specifically what anti-divination stuff is being cast (figure that out in the Discussion thread), but for the sake of not bogging things down too much I’m going to advance things along.

The Seekers make their way to Azir and then to Mediogalti without incident.

*

Following some minor procedures with customs, the Pathfinders finally set foot into Ilizmagorti. The air about the town constantly feels tense; even a casual stroll down the streets earn some curious glances.

Asking around about Strake reveals quite a bit; most of the townsfolk refer to him as the “party guy,” and easily direct you to his villa on the northeast side of town, where he’s apparently “always throwing some kind of shindig.” The townsfolk, however, seem particularly nosy; asking about the “Aspis” agents’ business and Ilizmagorti and why they are looking for Strake and assuming you would answer with your agreed-upon cover story what Strake has to do with Torch and so on. Eventually, the “Aspis” disengage from these conversations and make their way to Strake’s.

*

Four sleek pirate ships have been run aground near the harbor. The ships are laid out in a square and fashioned together with carpentry to form a walled enclosure. An open gate carved through the hull of the foremost ship leads into a pleasant garden, where a party is taking place. A stone villa rests near the back of the compound, protected by the ships’ walls.

Despite what the Pathfinders were told, there doesn’t seem to be anyone at the front gate taking invitations. With a shrug, the Seekers show themselves inside.

The air in Strake’s villa is uneasy, to say the least. Several party-goers seem to avoid yet occasionally glance toward a young, dashing human man sitting at a feasting table out in the garden while he very carefully polishes a single shoe in his hands.

Mingling amid the guests are several other persons of note: a grizzled human man wearing an eyepatch that appears to be one of the servants; a half-elf woman with green-tinted hair talking to a human man wearing extravagant clothing, both hold a glass of wine despite looking like they’ve had a bit too much already; and finally a halfling woman wearing a beautiful blue dress that is juxtaposed by the pirate hat on her head and the cutlass sheathed at her hip.

This first part is a bit of a roleplay encounter. You can talk to any of the people I’ve mentioned (the dashing human, the grizzled human, the half-elf and the extravagant human [you talk to both simultaneously], and the halfling).

What do you do?
