Ushi Goroshi |
Not certain if the beast will be blinded much longer, Ushi attempts to force further radiance into the room, careful not to catch his allies in the burst.
Concentration DC22: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 BAH!
As his spell fails to take effect, he maneuvers around to the door, preparing to enter the fray.
Patros Therinor |
Patros shirts over a stride and carries on with his offensive. He strikes then readies to fend off any attack.
5ft step, attack, then parry/riposte...on phone...can someone move me please?
attack: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 2 = 311d8 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 3 = 15

GM Rinaldo |
Oh, I forgot to add in the +3 circumstance bonus from the (mumble mumble) and the other +2 from the, y'know, that other thing.
Wouldn't you know, he has immunity to (mumble mumble)! Too bad!
GM Rinaldo |
Ushi tries to force more light into the chamber, but his mind is still reeling from the effort the first one took.
While Laiashi can't quite penetrate the Heart's tough hide, Nino and Patros fare better, each scoring a solid hit.
Atamin Ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Heart Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 3) = 17
Atamin repeats his shadow fire spell, again scorching the heart's exterior.
As its new wounds start to bind up, the Heart lashes out blindly, trying to stop the attack.
Who gets the bite attack? 1-Laiashi, 2-Patros,3-Nino: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Bite vs Patros: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 50% miss chance, 01-50 hits: 1d100 ⇒ 52 Saved from a crit threat!
Tentacle vs Nino: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Tentacle vs Laiashi: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
If this were 2nd edition, I'd be giving Ushi a Hero Point for the Burst of Radiance, that blindness has been a game changer this time around!

Ushi Goroshi |
Looking to Atamin, Ushi nods quickly. ”Keep the fire on it as long as you can. Good fortune to us all.” Then he turns through the doorway, drawing his knife as he approaches to harry the Heart.
Aid Another to Laiashi’s Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 17

Nino continues with his attacks.

Dagger 2 vs blind flailer, flat-footed, flanking: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 2 = 15

Ugh, the dice roller is not my friend this game. In case Ushi's Aid Another puts me over the edge, it takes an additional2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 sneak attack and -2 to attack rolls.
GM Rinaldo |
Ugh, no kidding. Double digits would really be a help on your attack rolls, Laiashi. :-(
Patros and Laiashi continue to scratch ineffectively against the creature's tough hide. Nino seems to be the only one who can consistently wound it with physical weapons. Thankfully, when Nino hits, he hits hard, and with a mighty blow, he tears a huge gash in its side, and the thing falls limp.
Immediately the gash begins to close again, and you can see that your victory will be short lived without the final piece of the puzzle.
"Quickly, administer the poison!" Atamin shouts, holding his hands ready for another blast of shadow-fire.
Heart is unconscious but regnerating. Atamin has a readied action to cast his spell again. Everyone is up!
Nino the Green |
Nino continues to attack.
mwk greatsword power attack, Furious Focus- flank: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 14
finish the fight - +1 against opponents you already injured
damage: 2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 + 3 = 17
"Laiashi! Now!"
Ushi Goroshi |
Ushi takes a moment to find a weak point to jab his dagger in. ”We’ll keep it subdued, apply the poison to your dagger!”
CdG Damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 = 8
Laiashi |
Finally provided with an opportunity to contribute, Laiashi plunges the shard down into the creature.
Coup de grace + bane: 2d4 + 10 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 10 + (3, 1) + 2 = 21
Sneak Attack damage if applicable: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12
If that results in some kind of obvious "monster-is-dead-now" effect:
Laiashi smiles apologetically at Atamin. "I... wasn't entirely truthful with you earlier. Our secret was a weapon, and it is fragile. But given our encounter with Nicasor, I couldn't be sure of your intentions. The poison I showed you earlier was a ruse. This is the real weapon." She holds up the black shard.
GM Rinaldo |
As the creature slumps down, Nino slams it again, while Patros and Ushi make more deliberate attacks on its exposed innards. Laiashi then pushes the mirror shard deep into its wound. Everyone waits for a few seconds, and sees that where the wounds had previously been closing up, they now lie still.
Atamin says to Laiashi, "Well, I suppose trust is earned, after all. Thank you for telling me."
Suddenly, your vision blurs. You quickly realize the walls and floor are trembling. As you pick yourselves up to move, your feet slide in the floor, as if it were made of mud.
The effect is a combination of a moderate earthquake with a mud pit, although the floor seems to be liquifying fairly quickly. What do you do?
Laiashi |
Laiashi pulls her feet out of the floor. "That would be this prison collapsing," she says, looking quickly around. She hops up onto the monster's body. "Any idea where to go now?" she asks nobody in particular.
Ushi Goroshi |
"We must need to leave the same way we came in." Ushi suggests, working to move through the muck towards the breach in the wall.
GM Rinaldo |
Out in the hallway, you hear shouts of concern, and the distinct sound of a child screaming in fear.
Atamin steps out into the hallway and says, "To the mirror, then? I will make sure the family is making their way."
GM Rinaldo |
With some effort, you get out of the Heart's chamber, leaving its strange corpse behind.
As you cross the short distance across the "dining room", things become even more disconcerting. The walls and floor of the dining room buckle and warp, and become sharp, as if covered in caltrops. You are forced to move slowly to avoid tripping and cutting yourselves, and you hear Atamin shouting instructions to the family to go down the stairs.
Reaching the door into the hallway, Nino looks out and sees Atamin ushering fetchlings to the stairs. Suddenly, the hallway between you and him winks out of existence ... an empty void filling the fifteen feet between you. Your only way out now is to go around the long way.
Going to pause in the narrative to let you respond in character, and let me know if you are doing anything in particular as you race around to get out.
Nino the Green |
Nino follows others. When they exit the room he turns to the west.
GM Rinaldo |
You begin running around the building, making a quick check for any living people left behind. It seems everyone is out, though you choose not to check on the animated furniture in the west side.
As you round the corner into the northern hallway, you are overcome by vertigo briefly as gravity ceases to function. Kicking off of the walls, you swim down the hall to the basement stairs.
Back in the basement, gravity reasserts itself, and you are able to run to the mirror room. You see that while you were running around the manor, Atamin seems to have evacuated everyone to the real world. As you approach the mirror, you look through to see a small crowd of fetchlings huddled together around Atamin's daughter, Manar. You see Atamin off to one side, watching as Nicasor stands over Baron Stepan, sword raised to strike.
The action is on slide 8, in the basement of the real manor. I used a cloud icon to represent Manar and the fetchlings; they will not get involved, but their square is impassible. Atamin has a red outline, Nicasor as a blue outline.
Do you plan to run through and start fighting, or do you want to attempt to negotiate? If you are done talking and are ready for combat, I'll roll initiative. If you want to try to resolve things peacefully, tell me what you are going to do and say.
Nino the Green |
Nino runs to attack Nicasor.
"I knew it! You will pay for this!"
GM Rinaldo |
Ushi: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Patros: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Nino: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Hmmm ...
24 Atamin
18 Ushi
17 Nicasor
12 Laiashi
07 Patros
05 Nino
There isn't really a surprise round, because you can see each other through the mirror. That said, Atamin is not doing anything at the moment, and Nicasor is yelling at the Baron before killing him, so I'm going to adjust the iniative as such: Atamin is effectively on delay. Ushi delays to let Nino lead. Nicasor monologues. Laiashi and Patros delay for Nino. In the end, Nicasor loses Round 1, Nino goes first, then Atamin might do something, then everyone else:

Nino is up! Moving through the mirror counts as difficult terrain (as you have to step through it somewhat carefully), but you are all adjacent to it. No 5' steps, but your first 10' of movement put you in the mirror's square. I will allow someone to stand in the mirror's square, but doing so gives you the Squeezing condition because you have less room to maneuver than usual.
GM Rinaldo |
That works! Ushi casts Bless before Nino steps through.

"Leave that man!" Before Nino steps through the mirror he casts Shield of fate on himself.
GM Rinaldo |
Nino casts a spell and steps into the room, positioning himself in the corner by Nicasor.
Atamin says quietly, "That's my brother, making friend and influencing people wherever he goes." He has a hand on his sword, but otherwise does nothing,
Atamin continues to delay, Patros and Laiashi may go.
Patros Therinor |
Patros darts in, looking to drop Nicasor before he harms the cowering man.

Patros darts in and stabs at Nicasor, but the Shae easily dodges the attack.
Laiashi is up!
Laiashi |
I'm going to assume I still have a dagger in one hand and the shard in the other, given that the last thing I did before things went haywire was to display the shard and discuss it.
Laiashi moves closer to Nicasor and stabs out.
Dagger vs Nicasor: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Atamin continues to stay out of the conflict, so Ushi is up!
Ushi Goroshi |
Very much wanting out of the mirror, Ushi raises his shield and makes for the door.
Total Defense and move.
Nino the Green |
Nino starts attacking Nicasor.
mwk greatsword power attack, Furious Focus: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
damage: 2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 5) + 6 + 3 = 15
GM Rinaldo |
Ushi moves in carefully, stepping away from the action. Atamin nods at him as he goes past, not attempting to stop or attack him.
Nicasor turns to face the others, ignoring the cringing baron. "Well, I had hoped that the Heart would take care of you for me, but no mind. My swords are more than a match for any three of you." He then attacks Nino.
Nicasor is wielding a longsword and a shortsword. He has Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Two-Weapon Defense, and Double Slice.
Primary attack, longsword: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 Confirm crit?: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15 Not confirmed. Damage (S): 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Damage (cold): 1d6 ⇒ 4

Iterative attack, shortsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Damage (S): 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Damage (cold): 1d6 ⇒ 6
That's 33 slashing and 14 cold damage to Nino for a total of 47. Nino is unconscious and dying at -8hp.
With a flurry of blades, Nicasor takes down Nino and turns to face Patros and Laiashi.

Everyone else is up!
Laiashi |
Seeing Nino drop so quickly, Laishi adopts a more defensive stance as she drops the shard and pulls out another dagger.
Move action to draw, standard action to stab. Didn't think I would ever actually use this feat, but...

EDIT: Forgot Ushi's bless, which cancels out the penalty.
Patros Therinor |
Patros slashes at the foul being that just cut down Nino.

GM Rinaldo |
Patros, remind me please how you are doing the intimidate and what the effect is? I'm not seeing it on your profile and can't remember.
Also, let me know what your current AC is, in case it is different from what is on your tag line.
GM Rinaldo |
You still didn't say *which* deed, but I think you mean "Intimidating Swordplay" that lets you demoralize as a swift action.
Ushi casts a spell to help Patros as the swashbuckler attacks along with Laiashi. Both discover that fighting a Shae is even harder than expected, as its form is indistinct and blurry.
Just to make things worse, Shae have the Amorphous trait (immune to both precision damage and critical hits) *and* a permanent Blur.
Laiashi 20% miss chance, 01-20 misses: 1d100 ⇒ 58 Hit!
Patros 20% miss chance, 01-20 misses: 1d100 ⇒ 20 Miss :-(
Patros' sword appears to pass through Nicasor, though Laiashi's dagger strikes true.
Nicasor takes 6 damage.
