GM Rinaldo |
With Nino on guard, Laiashi moves up the stairs and into the hall. She hears nothing, so she carefully opens the first door.
A feather bed piled high with blankets dominates this well appointed room. Floral wallpaper has been carefully pasted over the black walls of the manor, and carpets cover the floor. A dresser, mirror, desk and armchair complete the illusion of a comfortable apartment on the Material Plane.
A corpse lies on the bed, propped up against the pillows and swaddled in coverlets. The cold air has preserved his body well, and there is little smell. You recognize it from one of the portraits in the manor as Iozif, one of Stepan Boroi's older brothers.
Ushi Goroshi |
"Unfortunate." Ushi murmurs as he joins Laiashi at the top and spies the body. "I doubt his spirit rests peacefully. Beware for another shade when you enter."
Nino the Green |
Nino enters the room and starts looking around.

Patros Therinor |
Patros grabs a flask of holy water from his bandolier and hopes he doesn't have to use it. He looks around the room.

could someone move my token up beside Nino pkease? on phone right now...ty.
GM Rinaldo |
Nino and Patros inspect the bedroom. They note that Iozif's left hand is missing one finger - a whole finger, not just a single knuckle like Lady Anya.
They also find a crude hand-made doll with gray skin and white hair on the floor beneath the bed.
Nino the Green |
Nino takes the doll.
"So brother is dead! OK, shall we move on!" Nino exits the room and heads to the next door.
perception on the door: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
If there is no trap and all party is next to him he will open the door
GM Rinaldo |
Everyone moves up as Nino checks the next door. Hearing nothing and seeing no evidence of a trap, he opens it.
This is a well-appointed bedroom, where carpets and wallpaper cover the otherwise grim substance from which the house is constructed. Every available surface is covered in writing, lines of curly script that wind around the room in great arcs and spirals. The hanged body of Stepan's other brother, Henric, dangles from the ceiling, immobile in the still air.

Suddenly, a malevolent spirit emerges from Henric's body!
Laiashi, Patros, and Nino may act.
On your turn you may attempt a Knowledge (religion) check.
Laiashi |
Her daggers scorching hot in her hands, Laiashi moves into the room, ducking toward the back to get in a more favorable position.
Double move.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Yikes. I'm gonna use my reroll on that.

Nino the Green |
religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
This is an Allip, an incorporeal undead known primarily for its Babble ability which can fascinate everyone that hears it.
Nino drops his greatsword, pulls out his magical sword and steps in flank with Laiashi.
+1 longsword power attack, Furious Focus - flank: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 2 = 29
damage: 2d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 15

damage: 2d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 15
GM Rinaldo |
Nino, that's going to be a hard corner, so you can't 5' step. Do you want to use a move action to get into flank, or 5'step into the room this round, and maneuver again next round?
Laiashi, since you are acting before it, it is flat-footed. You could choose not to make that acrobatics check and risk it having Combat Reflexes for an AoO. Your call on that. If you choose to risk it, you can keep your reroll.
GM Rinaldo |
Nino steps in and swings the magical longsword. It goes through the allip's body, but he can feel the magic of the sword affecting the spirit. Good time for a crit! Half damage, but you can tell that was a good hit.
Patros Therinor |
Patros sneaks into the corner and lashes out with his blade. He then readies to fend off any attacks it might make.
attack: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 221d8 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 3 = 9
GM Rinaldo |
As it turns out, it does not have combat reflexes, so Laiashi is able to move without getting attacked.
Patros, according to your profile, your weapon is not magical, which means it will be ineffective against an incorporeal creature. Did you take Stepan's magic dagger? If so, you can use that, but will need to tell me how that modifies your attack and damage (I'll turns that 2 on the 1d8 into a 1 on 1d4, but I need to know if any of your other modifiers are changed.) Alternately, you can redo your turn if you choose.
GM Rinaldo |
Using Stepan's magic dagger, Patros jabs at the spirit, nicking it slightly. Hit, but half of 2 damage is 1.
The spirit begins muttering, and the sound is both grating and shrill at the same time. It gets into your head and makes it difficult to think.
Everyone needs to make a Will save against a sonic, mind-affecting, compulsion effect.
GM Rinaldo |
Laiashi and Patros find the sounds so irritating that they can't concentrate on anything else! You both have the fascinated condition until further notice.

Ushi Goroshi |
Finding Laiashi out of reach when he steps to the doorway, Ushi reaches around the wall to touch Patros. "May the prophecies protect you from this evil." he intones, before focusing on the undead to recall anything further that might be useful in defeating it.
Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
Protection from Evil to boost Patros' AC and saves.
GM Rinaldo |
See the spoilers from my post when you first saw it - your roll gets you both.
Reading the text of Protection from Evil, I'm going to say the "get a new save" feature does apply here.
Patros new save with +2 morale bonus: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 2 = 12
:-( Sorry, that still fails.
Ushi casts a spell to protect Patros, but the swashbuckler does not break free.
Nino the Green |
Nino strikes again.
+1 longsword power attack, Furious Focus : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
damage: 2d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 15
GM Rinaldo |
Nino swings and once again drags his sword through the spirit's form. The allip pales, but still manages to counterattack.
Incorporeal Touch vs Nino: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 WIS damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
As the allip's ghostly arm reaches into Nino's head, he can feel his wits scrambling, and finds it harder to concentrate.

Ushi Goroshi |
Ushi touches Nino as well, granting him similar protections.
Protection from Evil again. The deflection won't help much, but there's just nothing else Ushi can do with enough effect.
Nino the Green |
Sorry I didn't notice that I am up again! Sorry again!
Nino swings again.
+1 longsword power attack, Furious Focus: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 = 18 finish the fight - +1 against opponents you already injured
damage: 2d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 19
GM Rinaldo |
With one final swing, Nino drags his sword through the spirit, and this time dissipates it.
Combat over!
Patros recovers from the allip's babble in 1 more round, and Laiashi 2 rounds after that.
With Henric's spirit dispatched, you are now (apparently) alone with his corpse.
Nino the Green |
"Guys, I again have that strange feeling! Can someone help me?"
4 WIS damage
Ushi Goroshi |
”No more than I could in the chandlery.” Ushi hisses in disappointment. ”Patros, Laiashi, are you okay?”
Laiashi |
The creature speaks in some sort of harsh, droning babble. It fills Laiashi's ears, somehow growing impossibly loud. The edges of her vision blur, and she finds it impossible to remember what she was doing only a moment ago. She can't move, can't think, can't see, wishing she could drown out the horrible sound-- until it's gone. Her vision clears and she finds that her allies have killed it. She kicks the fading shape of its body, or tries to, although her foot finds no resistance. I hate feeling helpless. "Thanks."
GM Rinaldo |
Once everyone is moving again, a quick search of Henric's quarters turns up a magical ring on his finger, and in an ornate darkwood wardrobe you find a magical longsword, two potions, and a mundane but intricate looking belt of linked gold rings.
Ushi Goroshi |
Ushi takes a few moments to divine the magic within the potions, as well as the weapon and ring. "Should we run into more shades, the longsword will serve us well."
Take 10 for 22 Spellcraft.
GM Rinaldo |
You can't take 10 while concentrating on a spell, so you'll need to roll those (unless you have a way of getting Detect Magic without concentrating?)

"Next room to the south!" Nino opens the door.
GM Rinaldo |
Nino determines that the sword is a +1 longsword and the ring is a ring of sustenance.
You open the next door to find unevenly upholstered furniture filling a large common area, chairs and sofas circled around asymmetrical tables. Multiple doors on both sides of the room lead off to other areas.
Six fetchlings sit here, and they all look at Nino as he opens the door. One of them says, "I thought I heard sounds out there! We have visitors, quick go tell the family!"
At the instruction one of the other fetchlings rises to go down a side hall.
Nino the Green |
"Stop! Don't go, I have a gift for you! Gold and magical items!"
If he does not stops Nino takes out his sling and shoots the fetchling.

Ushi Goroshi |
Ushi peers in around his half-orc companion. ”Hopefully the gift isn’t your blade. It’s unusual to find non-hostile company in such places.” Addressing the seated fetchlings, he continues. ”Before we get anyone else involved, what family are we speaking of?”
GM Rinaldo |
At Nino's call, the younger fetchling stops and looks back. The one who had told him to go says, "The masters of the manor, or course. Nicasor and his family. Who are you? No one new has come here in ... well, I have no idea how long, time is hard to track here."
Laiashi |
"Sorry for the, uh intrusion." Laiashi lowers her daggers but keeps them in hand for now. "Coming this far hasn't been easy. I'm Laiashi, and my friends and I are here to free everyone from this prison. Have you by chance seen a beating heart around here somewhere?"
GM Rinaldo |
The fetchlings look at each other and shrug. "No, not other than what's in everyone's bodies ..."
Ushi Goroshi |
"The mirror has been damaged. That is why you've not had guests in a long while. We are here to correct it. Nicasor appears to have been forgotten, could you tell us of him? We should know how to greet the master of the house." Ushi privately hopes the greeting isn't violent.
GM Rinaldo |
"He's in his room, I was just sending my son to get him when you said to wait. Hold on, we'll just go let him know you're here."
Do you prevent them from going to get Nicasor?
Ushi Goroshi |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
"I see no problem with that. Who else occupies the house? Should we be prepared to meet them?"
