Thanks Artur and Nyd, I appreciate it.

@everyone: feel free to change anything (stats, spells, etc.) but I would like you to keep your race/class the same and hopefully even your subclass if possible.

Remember that I care a lot more about the story aspect and a number here and there won't make a difference in my games. I have been known to give out 'cool' bonuses for stuff if I like the description of the execution, the intended results, and/or the RP that comes about because of it.

RL game last night

Tharivol was pleasantly surprised that the tavern became consensus over roughing it in the Standing Stones. He much preferred a bed than the ground any night, a better yet with attentive company.

He stayed out of the way of the discussions figuring that they would finally get to his suggestion to follow the tracks. They always did, and specifically he knew Artur would never relent.

On the return trip, he started to hum a melody that resembled the noises of the battle: the dolgrims grunts, Zdravko's spinning manuevers, Briar's rage, Artur's explosions, Nyd's and Veratash's magic, even though Veratash denies it being magic.

So, when they arrived at the tavern, he broke out his lute and assembled the tune beginning with a long preamble of haunting melody of black herons switching into feverish uptempo battle of the standing stones, with everyone able to hear their theme phrases. When it was mostly done, he began to test out some words to tell the tale, so far.
Lute Performance with advantage: 2d20 + 6 + 1d4 ⇒ (9, 14) + 6 + (1) = 30 21

He could do better. He continued to pick at it and alter the notes and lyrics.

As the group focused on the necklace, she finally spoke up about it "I know this thing, for it is a thing of Dhakaani artifice...a thing of the duur'kala, our culture keepers. Yes, goblincraft. Imagine a sealed missive whose carrier's horse never tires, whose heart never brings him abed with sick whore, never waylaid by bandits from out the shadows on the road...as assured as my voice will reach from me, here and now, to you...standing just there. Such is the function of this thing." she stepped a bit closer to read the runes, but never held out her hand.

"There is the mark of Taruuzh, a name from our oldest sung creation stories. While our big brothers all know how to fold metals from the dawn of time, few save Taruuzh probed the geometry of crystals...they say he rescued a svirfneblin girl from the Khyber, and took her as spearwife. If authentic, this piece is a treasure beyond the banks of Kundarak..." she paces, considering.

"But it carries a danger...or a power, it can send messages as well as recieve, depending on the marks of shadows that project from within. Who has the matching piece? Who might be listening? Who might hear our war cry?"

Is it currently in send or recieve mode?

Between Action 1 and 2:

During the Walk back to town, Artur considered what had happened, and what was going to happen next. He sighed and considered what parts he had on himself and what he could fashion...I guess a rifle? Artur pulled out a slate and began sketching a design as they walked, hardly paying attention to the area around them.

In many ways, it was like the days of his youth back home when he had an idea for a creation: he would sketch and plan nonstop, not even bothering to eat or sleep for days at a time til he would crash.

As the now familiar doors of the Inn came into view, Artur put the finishing touches on his design and sketched a couple of notes.

This he thought should help turn the tide.

Now he would just need to have that talk with Briar. Best not to let these things linger.

Putting away his slate, Artur sighed and then approached Briar, saying "We need to talk."

Action 5:

When Artur came down for breakfast that morning, he was different. He wore his sweater under armor: specifically a mithral breastplate that had a perfect circle missing from the upper breast that appeared to be filled with glass. He had his metal pack on his back, and what appeared to be a rifle slung over one shoulder.

When Sandar voiced his concerns, Artur said "I agree. We need to leave. Returning here again and again insures that they will attack you."

Action 1

Briar watched as Artur moved to her, she nodded and acknowledged his comment.

"Our bodies need food, our minds...solace, our souls...hope..."

She was lost in thought for a moment, then her gaze refocused on Artur.

"You are drawing something? In your book?"

Action 2
Briar squinted at the lump of crystal Veratash proffered.

"I know trees and soil, blood and water, not rocks and enchantments. I know not what makes this, or you, so special that the corrupted ones would be so intent on collecting you both."

She shrugs and looks at Tharivol and Artur, wondering if they would be ale to provide more of an explanation.

Action 3

Though her face remained calm, Briar tapped her foot in time to Tharivol's music, and even nodded her head during the crescendos

"That is quite the talent you have there, mixing together different things to make something new"

After Dravko explains about the necklace

She grinned despite herself when Artur spoke of bedding.

"I am relieved to hear that this is of Hobgoblin make rather than something produced by the abominations. Veratash, if you can think back to where you were, was there a lot magical artifacts? Many things that looked older, unearthed rather than recently made?"

She frowned

"It is probably coincidence, but I recall something recently said of other hobgoblin metal was it?"

She shook her head and looked confused

"You will have to excuse my memory, it shifts and grows foggy sometimes."

Action 4

"Did we want to record a message and send something then? Or perhaps put it in to listening mode and wait to hear what the other necklace wearer says?"

Action 5

It did not take long for Briar tell Kela the tale of the standing stones.

"Kela, I will stay with these folk if you can head back to the other Gatekeepers and spread the word?"

@Nyd: Thanks for the infos. The changes seem fair.

Action 1

Veratash noticed the new look about Artur and thought the man a living legend. While he didn't say anything, his eyes betrayed him showing glee.

Action 2

Veratash remembered his mother telling him he was special. Life taught him otherwise. "I do not know why they chase me. I think it has more to do with the fact that I escaped them than anything else", he said hopeful.

Action 3

Veratash welcomed the night sleep. He took a hot bath before going to bed. He had a larger than average portion of stew. He thought it would take him long to sleep, thinking of the horrors he had witnessed during the day, but the moment his head touched the bed, he wasn't awake anymore. The next morning, he wore a smile and went downstairs ready to leave for what he thought was an adventure.

Action 4

Veratash listened attentively to the talk about the message crystal. Jewelry interested him. He was keeping silent, though. He didn't want to say anything stupid.

Action 5

Veratash seemed ready to leave. Despite the life changing events from the last few days, he seemed eager to go through with finding the cult and ending it. He felt responsible for the other kalashtar of his entourage after all.

Female Shifter Barbarian 5 | AC: 17; Init: +2; Perc: +4 (Passive 14) Darkvision

Action 1

Briar blinked slowly as Artur ignored her question and spoke his mind

"I had already forgotten, I am sorry you were still carrying it... that regret that you lost control of your anger..."

She stared at him across the table

"I am used to speaking bluntly, I do not mean to cause offence with what I will say to you now, I do not talk to many outside the Reaches, outside the forest. Normally I would waste no more words, I gave you my answer yesterday, and so I wonder what makes you feel your ears can hear the same thing differently today?"

She sighed

"It is clear you believe you are right, you first wield your opinion like a blunt club and admonish, then when you do not get what you wanted, then perhaps you now wish to try the sharp sword of clever words to persuade me?"

Her fingernails scrape against the rough wood of the tabletop.

"But we must travel together longer now perhaps, and I will do my part to hear your desire to talk again. So I must trust that your mind is open to what I have to say, otherwise my words are but dust and wind, and we both waste heartbeats we could have put to better use."

She takes a moment to push some of the crockery aside, shifting the utensils and tankards to form a rough outline of the battlefield.

"Yes they had more numbers, more than fivefold. I grant you that they would have found closing with us difficult due to the circle, but they all had bows and we had limited cover, and even more limited means to retaliate. They would have picked us apart if battle had been joined at distance."

She paused and tried to watch Artur's eyes, but aside from the gut feel she got when she knew an animal was about to pounce, or the adrenaline surge of knowing when an opponent was vulnerable to a strike, she knew nothing of reading a man's emotions on his face.

She continued.

"They were advancing, if we had not acted, they would have surrounded us and put us in an even worse position. My strengths lie in fighting close, and I am best used to shock and awe, to draw attention away from others. I sought to break their advance and split their force so it could not all be concentrated on the weakest fighters."

Her eyes flickered to the others in the room.

"I realise you consider this reckless, undisciplined, but we make the best decision we can at any given moment, with the information we have at the time. Unless there is great reason to be inactive and wait, it is better to make a decision within only a few breaths, with an intense, fresh and undelaying spirit."

She visibly forced her shoulders to relax a little, and produced a smile with perhaps a few too many pointed teeth, though her air remained friendly.

"I am willing to work with you to try and co-ordinate tactics in future battles, but be clear what you expect from me, I am a warrior not a soldier"

You don't remember Dhakaani artifacts but you do remember crystals and dragonshards in the 'laboratory'.

You also remember some sort of contraption made out of metal and crystals that would fit over your head. With that on your head, you lost your will and were easily controlled.

You have a faint memory that Dah'mir had an Eberron Dragonshard in his throat but you don't remember a choker. Your memories are vague at best.

Feel free to embellish any of this

I found a blog, Keith Bakers blog, that covers a lot of the changes. The Blog

Some of the notables:

1. Healing works in the Mournland now, sometimes.
2. Doppelgangers are now corrupted Changlings.
3. Quori are aberrations.
4. There are more than just Valenar horses now.

Answering Briar, Veratash said "I don't really remember artifacts per se, but there were a great deal of crystals and dragonshards. My most vivid memory is the aparat I mentioned. They put it on my head. There were dragonshards on it, I remember. While wearing it, I lost my own will and they would command me without much effort."

As Nyd asked him for the shard, he reluctantly handed it over, worried. A few ideas came to his mind. "Do you reckon they're tracking me with this? Maybe they were using the contraption to attack my Quori spirit?" He awaited eagerly for Nyd to concur with him.

Nyd shook his head. "That is part of the reason I wish to examine it. However if the item is unique, there are spells that could track it by that uniqueness alone, even if there is not magic involved."

Nyd pulls out his wand of magic detection and casts detect magic before beginning a study of the crystal, to see if any of his studies will recognize it.

OOC: the crystal is a large eberron dragonshard that has been attuned and used in the casting of spells before thus it 'accepts' the flow of magic more readily. You do not believe that someone is tracking this particular dragonshard.

Artur lets Briar finish then say "I'm not the best speaker, Briar. I can give a good rousing speech on occasion, but I will never be a politician, nor will I have a way with words like Tharivol; just like you, I do not like to mince words either, but I am doing my best to try to understand your point of view and quiet the part of my brain that is screaming that it's selfish." Artur took a deep breath and exhaled hard before continuing with "I understand that you are not a soldier, so when you fight you do not immediately think tactically; with that being said, however, when you ran out of a secure area that we could shoot out of with magic, you made the decision for the rest of us to either: A) follow you out and try and support you, or B) watch you get surrounded and killed."

Artur paused and then continued "Furthermore, Nyd has battlefield control magic, including his disgusting cloud spell, which really stinks by the way, that blocks line of sight; I have a turret that can cover our group in a field that absorbs damage. Veratash is a psychic caster that has some ability to control people's minds. Instead of letting them approach to employ this type of magic most effectively, we were forced to fight in a way that helped our enemies. Allow me to show you what happens when you fight the enemy they way they want you to fight them."

Artur then removed his sweater, revealing two things: first, he was wearing a breastplate made of Mithral, which had a perfect circle over the right breast, underneath which a dragonmark clearly shown. The other thing it revealed was that Artur's left arm was not natural. While the bicep and tricep were one piece of metal, the shoulder and elbow were designed with an odd sort of "cup and ball" design which clearly allowed it the sort of mobility that a regular arm had. It had been sprayed the same color as his natural skin (minus any difference for tanning) but it was obvious to anyone looking at it that it was artificial.

After making sure she saw it, Artur redonned his sweater and said "As you can see, I was lucky."

"I'm not saying don't be yourself; what I am saying is that actions have consequences, and your actions very nearly had consequences for more than just your own life."

Action 1
Briar listened to Artur, the whole way through, and thought for a moment before replying.

"I fear that whilst you have said you are trying to understand my point of view, your attempt has been drowned by the swelling tide of your own thoughts."

She stared at her hands, choosing not to meet his gaze in case she came across as aggressive.

"Just because I am not soldier does not mean I don't think tactically, evidently I didn't come to the same conclusion as you, however I fear that your bias as a military man is blinding you simply because you did not like what I did."

She met his gaze again

"I already explained why I left the circle and have no interest in rehashing that for a third time. What does need to be said is that when I left your 'secure area', I did not make a decision for you and the others. It was your choice, as it was theirs, to follow or not. You could have begun supporting fire from your position, you could have trusted that I might have known what I was doing. You made a decision at that moment based on your assessment of the situation, exactly as I had done, I did not force anything."

Her tone remained carefully calm the whole time, words were punctuated with slight pauses rather than a raised voice.

"You make a valid point about the magical and ranged capability of Nyd and the others. I did not know that at the time, and when the enemy was approaching, no plan was made based upon that, nothing was shared. Pointing out I did not know something that I was not told, that is not just. I can bear it in mind for the future, but do not imply that I was selfish for thinking I was taking the fight away from those who seemed vulnerable."

She took a sip of water, then gestured at Artur's mechanical arm. She spoke softly now, barely audible, warrior to warrior.

Artur:

"I think it is easy to look at a situation with hindsight and pick holes in someone else's decision. I also think perhaps that your own past decisions led to events you regret, and that your heart is in the right place in wanting to prevent others making the same kind of mistakes you did."

She cocked her head to the side, staring through him.

"I have listened to you, I have heard what you have said. I do not agree with your assessment of my actions, and I do not think you have truly accepted my reasons. But that is what it is. We have spoken with each other, words have failed to bridge the gap, and we will now either start earning each other's respect, or not."

She leaned back a little

"If nothing I have said has made any sense to you, if you still look at the fight through no eyes but your own, then I understand. But that then means we cannot share a path together. I can pack my things and head off in the opposite direction to Kela, there are many who need warning and two pairs of feet are faster than one. If you need a guide here in the Reaches then I can ask another Gatekeeper or local to help you."

She's being completely genuine with that offer, every single word of the sentence. From my perspective as a player, please do not let the metagame get in the way of any reply! I am always happy to roll something different when a character's part in the story comes to an end, no matter how that happens!

"As I told you before, thinly beaten sheets of metal would be the best material, as 'wood and herbs' won't stand up to an explorer's lifestyle. The metallic feathers would make a good weapon, too. If you focus on it's strength during the animation ritual, it might be able to fling it's feathers like thrown daggers."

Artur pulled off his utility belt and opened the large pouch in the back that appeared to be full of scraps of metal, screws, bolts, and other pieces of metal. After sifting through for a moment, he produced a dozen or so diamond shaped pieces of thin metal. After comparing them by bouncing them in his hand, Artur finally selected one and returned the rest to the pouch in a careful order. He then took pains to reseal it.

"Let's see if they have a smithy here, shall we?"

Assuming they do:

Artur used the diamond shape as a pattern, tracing out the shape repeatedly on a sheet of metal that he had beaten repeatedly to get it as thin as possible. Once that was completed, Artur had Nyd begin to cut out the shapes while he got to work on the frame of the creature. He used a knife to make fine slices of metal, which he then heated and twisted to make threaded wires, which he used to make the frame.

With the frame assembled, Artur took the "feathers" and used an awl to set a groove in the outer edge of one side, then flipped each feather and repeated the process.

After a few hours of etching the feathers, Artur switched to applying them to the frame. His design quickly started to come together, and it seemed the feathers were designed to interlock with each other, allowing a bit of flexibility while preventing it from falling apart. When all the feathers had been applied to the body, Artur wiped his brow and took a drink of water then said "We'll need something to use for eyes. Do you have any gems?"

Zdravko was clueless about surface flora, having spent most of her life deep underground. But that didn't stop her from trying; zipping here and there, uprooting heirloom vegetables and prized perennials with a determined satisfaction before presenting them to the war machine.

As Artur spun his craft, Zdravko went to her bracelet...a strange chemical substance elongated like a water droplet before hardening and clicking off her wrist with a *snap*. In short order she produced a few fragile gems with the diaphaneity of topaz for inspection. Looking closely, they seemed to scintillate inside with a moving light of their own source. And would explode like a firework if crushed accidentally

And yeah, that dwarf picture was the biggest wtf lol I had reading through it all.

Tharivol watched over those dealing with the body with his longbow in hand at a distance. He wasn't sentimental and had no desire to handle corpses if he didn't have to. So, when Artur heard the noise in the cabin, the dragonmarked elf paralleled the approach to the cabin to circle around back to ensure the cabin didn't hide any more threats.

Action 4:

Artur saw the body and knew what was likely in the house waiting for them. He started to take a step, then faltered and focused on listening. There it was again, the tell-tale sound of boots and wood scraping against wood.

The walk to the cottage was a short one, but Artur unslung his rifle and brought it to his shoulder as he did. When he reached the door, he called out "I know you're in there. Come on out now, nice and calm if you don't want to get shot."

As if to accentuate his point, he flipped off the safety on his rifle, which began to hum ever so quietly with power.

Action 1
Briar nodded at Artur's response.

"Very well, we should be away then."

Action 2
Briar thought of the various plants in the area after Nyd asked his quesion, but Artur's actions in guiding the warforged through a different path to what he was doing made the point moot. Instead she watched with curiosity as the metal contraption took shape.

Action 3
Briar frowned with concern, her hand tightened on the hilt of her glaive

"He is, was, a friend. He has a family here, I hope we are not too late."

She moved to jog up the path but stopped, turning to Artur.

"I intend to go to the cabin and gain entry, if there is a slim chance they are still alive then time could be critical..."

She waited, teeth gritted.

Action 4
She'd nodded approvingly as Artur headed towards the cabin. Her glaive was ready and her ears pricked, she tried to listen to what was happening inside.

Action 1

"Shouldn't we switch to listen mode after sending a message?", Veratash said unsure.

Action 2

As Artur started to smith, Veratash had an idea of himself. He asked the blacksmith for some silver and how much he could pay for that silver. He, then, started crafting a pendant for himself, which could hold the dragonshard, so he wouldn't have to hold it himself.

Jewelcrafting a pendant for the dragonshard. How much should I spend on crafting materials?

Action 3

Veratash saw the body with sadness. "What can we do for them?", meaning how he could help with any burial or similar ritual. Only then did he notice that the others were acting warily and following tracks. He followed trying to not make any noise. "Are you ok?", he asked Briar.

Action 4

Seeing everyone get ready for combat, Veratash made sure his new pendant was on him and crouched near Tharivol. Then Artur made sure they were announced, so he came in closer.

The kalashtar focused on the dragonshard around his neck and opened his mind to complex minds around him. "Show me your minds", he mustered while touching his temples then slowly opened his arms.

Acton 3
Nyd draws his offensive wand.

"Given our recent experiences, we should approach with caution."

Seeing Veratash following him, Tharivol watched where the Kalashtar walked as a veteran takes responsibility for a rookie. Can’t let the kid get himself stupidly killed. He has the best information for the mission. the dragonmarked elf thought.

OOC: you're about 30-35' to the cabin; let's say 30' so there goes your move action.

The cabin is one-story with an attic so no more than 15' and it should be medium difficulty to climb so DC 15.
