Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

I know that everyone has spelled out their trigger's elsewhere. If you don't mind please put them here on the 1st discussion page. That way I'll have an easy place to look to refer back to.

Because this is a horror game in Pathfinder there will be violence, gore, and disturbing situations. If I accidentally cross a line and you are uncomfortable with a situation please let me know and I will dial it back to an acceptable level.

I always welcome constructive criticism.

Agreed, thanks for agreeing to GM for us.

As for Hard Nos, my big one is rape. If other players want to have that in their backstories that’s fine, but I’m not comfortable with it happening to my character. I would be okay with creepy innuendo or even threats, so long as it was coming from someone clearly villainous and never progressed further than that.

I’m also not comfortable with explicit violence happening to children. Implied past and/or “off-screen” violence is okay, again so long as it was done by someone villainous.

Gory violence is fine, so long as it’s not happening to children.

My hard-no:

Altered Appearance - specifically, death-reincarnation. I visualize the action, making it actually immersion-breaking to have to keep self-correcting how I see my character's own no-longer-human hand gripping her weapon. It killed the fun. Under the same GM, I had a Druid use a Wish to become a fairy (to befriend the fairy she rescued). Alteration can be fun, if by choice. Not fun if it's a look I don't want.

Forced Attraction to Men - VV's not into guys. I have no problem, as a player, with a male NPC being attracted to VV. She will turn down any advances. Likewise, if VV flirts with a female NPC, it doesn't necessarily need to go beyond accepting the compliment about her dress or whatever. VV may hope for romance, but all I want is good RP.

In-Fighting - disagreements are fine; disrespect is not. I'm not worried about this group crossing the line, but I just wanted to give my original hard-no list.

If I were to list five instead of three, the other two would echo Saiya's hard-nos: rape and explicit violence against children. Her specifics on both of those work for me.

Thanks for taking over, I am looking forward to this continuing. Particular thanks to Saiya for organising new recruitment thread and to our new DM!

My hard no's are probably the same as the others have listed/will list.

Great! I'll get a gameplay post up in a few hours. I did PM Erisa but I haven't heard anything back yet.

At the top of the campaign I have a link to the current map. I wasn't sure which images you wanted me to use for your map tokens. So I grabbed both your profile image and cropped your inspirational images and put them on slide 3. If you have a preference just delete the one you don't want me to use, or let me know.

On that same slide I also have a best guess standard marching order for 1 by 1, 2 by 2, and 3 by 3, feel free to rearrange the order as you see fit. So when we get into combat I'll use that as a guide for how to place you on the combat map. If you have a preferred watch order there is a text box for that as well.

Also at the top of the campaign page is a link to a treasure sheet a friend of mine made for me. I still need to personalize it for the group. If you want to use that for treasure tracking it's available, but if you have another system you want to use that works too. If we use the sheet above I'll generally put the things you find on the party page and then you can move them to you personal page as you claim gear. The sheet can figure your encumbrance if you enter your carry weights on your page. I'm not requiring you to track encumbrance but if you want to you can.

Both links to the map and treasure are in my byline as well. You'll note that you're table A, if you click table 1's links there could be spoilers lurking. So just keep that in mind.

I like having my own artwork on your map, so cartoon VV please. I can't believe how similar the other inspirational pics are to the Paizo avatars.

Your bloodrager player gave a good review of your Table 1 game... but yeah. Spoilers. Better I not click that (again).

I'll update my stats soon. Likely, 20-12-10-14-6-10, meaning my add'l 7 AP will go to +2 DEX, +3 WIS, and +2 CHA.

Looking forward to continuing soon! (...and waking up soon? -ish??)

Lol, well I'm glad Alzidog thinks well of that game. It's had some rough patches, he's the only original member of that group and I'm the 3rd GM.

The funny part is I had no idea who he was or the he knew you when I PM'd him a couple days ago. I accidentally clicked into a game he's GM'ing, which has red text. I just PM'd him to ask how he changed the color*, and he asked me if I was in your game. Apparently, he saw you on the recruitment thread and recognized the name "Vermilion Vixen."

*If the first word of your campaign name is "Red" or "Green," you get red or green text!

Speaking of her being seemingly famous... ((to be continued via PM))

Thanks a lot for the map and treasure tracker! We hadn't had a party treasure spreadsheet before, (hadn't run into all that much treasure tbh, and Saiya just grabbed most of it), so that looks fine. I did change up the marching order a bit. Jassminder's an archer, and despite being squishy Saiya (currently) is a melee combatant, so I swapped our positions.

Worth noting: when an hour passes, VV will be conscious. (Made my wake-up roll in the original gameplay thread.) I assume I'm at 1 HP, unless I get a full rest.

Here's the condition I believe you're referring to, stable, you're still negative HP but you are conscious and disabled. But the good news is you'll be dreaming soon.

@Delmoth: one thing I think I have missed is any conversation about PC builds. Do you want us to rebuild as a 20-point buy or are you ok with tge system the previous DM was using?

Changes:

AP
• Now: Delmoth raised the build from 63 to 70, so you can add 7 AP.
When Leveling Up: We add 1 AP instead of 2.

HP
• Now: Use the normal Pathfinder HD for your class (if you weren't already).
When Leveling Up: We don't roll; we add half HD + 1 (a.k.a. average rounded up).

We're also going to be using automatic bonus progression except you won't receive mental or physical prowess at the indicated levels. The ability point progression should be smoother and more in line with standard pathfinder rules but should also allow you a lot more flexibility. I never liked not being able to have a score lower than 5.

ABP is different in reality than how I imagined it. (I always thought it was like Lv.2: +1, Lv.4: +2, etc.)

Is it possible to upgrade masterwork items up to +5, so the ABP weapon/armor bonuses become flexible weapon/armor qualities? 'Cause that would be awesome!

Loved the Rooftopolis reference in the dream!

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

A weapon doesn't even need to be masterwork for you to attune to it and give it an enhancement bonus. But yes at level 17 when you attune with one weapon you make it a +5 weapon. I like it because I hate handing out amulets of natural armor or cloaks of protection over and over. With your neck slot free you can wear the much more situational Swarmbane clasp, for example, without worrying about your AC suffering.

My question was more like, could we (if we find the money and means) upgrade a masterwork to a +1? And then, could we use the +1 from ABP to add a +1 quality?

So example: I have +1 boots and +1 armor because I paid the friendly-but-shrewd spellcrafter NPC to upgrade those items. Then I use my ABP to change the armor from +1 to +2, and I make the stiletto heels +1 Keen.

Is that possible with the ABP system?

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

No. So you'll never see an item with a straight magical +X enhancement bonus. The magical weapons and armor you acquire can however have special qualities. So in your example above you have masterwork boots (which still provide +1 to hit), you could get those enchanted with keen. Then when you go to attune with your boots you can choose to allot enhancement bonus to use those special qualities.

So say V.V. is level 14, she can attune weapons up to +3 and has keen boots. When she attunes she can choose to attune at a +3 weapon and not use keen or to make +2 keen boots. It works similarly for armor. If you have a special quality that's enhancement bonus is over what you can provide, you can still use it if you attune to that weapon, it just uses up all your enhancement bonus. So if you had vorpal boots at 14th level you can attune to it but you wouldn't gain any enhancement bonus.

Just a quick heads-up, I'm out of town this weekend (bad timing I know, with this game having just restarted). Bot me as required.

Does your draw-as-part-of-a-move-action houserule apply to Martial Flexibility? If so, I will wait untilI actually see an enemy before using it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

Any move action so yes you could draw a weapon as a part of activating Martial Flexibility.

Oh! That will be very helpful if that means I could:

MOVE: pick up barrel / MF: throw anything
STANDARD: throw the barrel!

...but I take it I cannot walk and use MF as a single move action. (Which is fine, since that's the normal rule. I used MF before entering the room because I assume this to be the case.)

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

Right in the above example you'd only be able to take a 5ft step.

The reason I have this rule in place is because my IRL groups always played this way so I'm going to forget the real way to do it when writing enemy actions.

That makes sense. If picking up an object from the ground counts as drawing an improv weapon, I'll take advantage. Else, no worries—I got my ass-kicking boots!

@DM Delmoth - I know that people play and DM paladins in different ways; I am experimenting in this game with playing a paladin who is somewhat sociopathic - or at least, somewhat devoid of empathy. I posted the rationale in the other game but it's repeated below.

If you think this is going to cause problems (falling, usw) then please let me know. Happy to discuss via PM so as not to derail this thread with yet another paladin/alignment "moment"

Also, our previous DM wanted to use the Forgotten Realms deities rather than the Golarion ones. If you prefer, I'm happy to switch back to using the Golarion deities, especially since a paladin's choice of deity is much less significant than it is for clerics.

sociopathic paladin? What fresh hell is this?:
At first glance, paladins would seem to destroy most of the common horror tropes: they're literally fearless (from level 3), they have kick-ass Will saves and immunity to some enchantments (from level 7).

But what does it mean to be literally fearless? What have you lost, that you're so resistant to some of the most basic human emotions? That's a question I want to explore with Jassminder.

She may not be terrified by the more obvious things (dead bodies? Yeah, I've seen a few. Made a few myself, even) but she struggles to deal with emotions, both hers and other peoples'. Anyone showing a deep, real, powerful emotional response is likely to make her uncomfortable*; and anyone who shows signs of emotionally investing in her is likely to freak her out: don't they know she can't return that investment in kind? What's their angle?

And if they're sincere in their emotional attachment, then so much the more confusing. After all, what kind of weirdo would get emotionally involved with her?

*unless it's anger. It's fair to say that she's got anger sorted

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

I caught on pretty quick what you were trying to do when I started going through the gameplay thread. Needless to say I would have brought it up before taking on the game if I thought it was going to be a problem. There is one or two hurdles we'll have to work out but it won't even be in this book. I appreciate the concept and I'm glad for this exploration of 'what does it mean to be fearless.'

Immunity to fear isn't going to be an issue mechanically, when the rest of the party is fleeing in terror they'll be glad someone can keep a cool head and hold the line. You should be able to maintain a paladin's code but sometimes that will be the hard way. It won't be a show stopper especially for Jassminder.

As far as deities are concerned I'm good either way. I'll leave it up to you. I'm only familiar with FR deities in passing but I'll look things up as needed.

I was just ready to post, but before I commit to my move, can VV feasibly kick the silhouetted "doctor" through the sheet? Or trip the doc by sweep-kicking under the sheet?

I like it for the drama, but going round and throwing the valve wheel is fine too.

_____

EDIT - Oh! Can Mage Hand open the curtain? (Or Open/Close Door, if anyone has that catrip?)

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

All of those things can be done. V.V. can charge and since a trip can be done in place of a melee attack she can trip at the end of a charge. Since we're contemplating combat actions I'll get initiative up.

Okay, went with a trip from under the curtain and I reeeeally hope the creature tries to get up! The AoO kick will really hurt!

I updated my profile to show remaining uses of Martial Flex and my Pugnacious Trait's 1/day use of using my weapon as if it's larger (reach, damage, and Samy allowed me to include size bonus for break DC). I will shorten Martial Flexibility to "Flex" instead of "MF" because, not only do I not like having MF on my display, but "Flex" sounds funny in a clean way—like V.V. flexes her muscles in a super-heroic pose, and suddenly she can grapple or battle-cry.

I almost used Flex to gain TWF, but realized my DEX is too low. (Brawler gets TWF @ Lv.2 regardless of DEX, but I believe to use it at Lv.1, she would need DEX 15 like any other non-monk.)

Improved Trip is probably unnecessary with Saiya there, since I have Dirty Fight (meaning I can trip/grapple a flanked enemy without provoking AoO). However, I honestly don't know when an outnumbered enemy is officially flanked. (I mean aside from houserules of a specific GM.)

F Fetchling Investigator (Questioner) 5 | HP 31/33 | AC: 20 (T: 15, FF: 16) (+1 vs Traps) | Saves: F:+3, R:+9 (+1 vs Traps), W:+5 | BAB: +3, CMB: +3, CMD: 17 | Perception +8 + 1d6 (+2 to find traps) | Init +4
More Info:
Spells (1st) 4/5, (2nd) 1/3 | Inspiration Pool 6/6 | Resistances: Cold/Electricity 5, Poison 4 | Shadow Blending (50% miss chance in dim light)

Unless our GM houserules otherwise, I don't believe Saiya was helping flank. We'd need to be on opposite sides of the enemy for a flanking bonus to apply.

No need for a ruling. As noted in ooc-blue at the top of my post, I used Martial Flex so I now have Improved Trip for 10 rounds (cancelling Throw Anything).

Is there a good way for Jass to hit the doc while it's prone? I hate to keep tripping Oathsday out from under arrows, but I even more hate getting stabbed.

Would shooting from atop the table negate the prone penalty? Or does Jass have a melee weapon, which she could draw and use next round thanks to the move-and-draw houserule?

Given the Lv.1 HP, I'd rather miss with my kick than miss with my AoO trip—at least if that keeps me from taking damage.

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

As I explained in gameplay the AoO is rather useless if it's used as a trip because she is still prone when you take the AoO. As far as I know there is no way to negate the prone penalty, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a way. If someone jumped on the table and shot her while prone I'd say you get a higher ground bonus to attack, which is a +1.

Oh, I get it. So kick first, then trip.

I take the roll-reversal to mean I landed the 9 damage, but the doc hit me too. Or does a successful AoO prevent the doc's attack?

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

Right kick first, trip second. The kick hits with a 19 (and a -4 penalty to AC) does the damage you rolled. And then a wiff with the trip action on your turn. On the plus side Jassminder doesn't have to worry Dr. Doppelganger getting a bonus to AC.

Question...

While enlarged, can I safely use my move action to step back 10 ft?

My thinking: if the enemy attacks me, I get an AoO.

Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

The 5ft step rules don't change with size so you could safely move 5ft away. However you could 5ft away and still attack because you'd have a larger natural reach.

If you wanted to move more than 5ft you could use a full round action to withdraw. But then the only other thing you could do would be a swift action.

I 5ft-stepped back on the map (assuming the curtain isn’t an issue—if it is, just move me 5ft right), but I think the enemy can just as easily 5ft-step forward for the take-down. With 5HP, only a really low attack roll can save me and the dagger will inflict at least 5 damage. That said, if I can make use of that size bonus, I will.

I adjusted AC from 14 to 12, and HP from 11 to 5.

I wish growing in a space that occupies an enemy would provoke AoO (in the being-enlarged person’s favor), but it seems that only works if you grow in a space with an object in it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Reign of Winter Map Carrion Hill Map

I think I may have misunderstood the question, sorry if that's the case. In any case you can 5ft step back because you could have done so on your turn and it wouldn't have changed anyone else's actions so that's fine. The curtain won't interfere once you're enlarged so don't worry about it.

In any case you're not enlarged yet. Enlarge person has a 1 round cast time so it will take effect at the beginning of Miyuki's turn. That's good news because you'll have a better AC and if you delay until after Miyuki you'll be able to attack with better damage. I took the liberty of resizing your token back down for now.

That's super-helpful, actually. Thanks. (Oh, and missing V.V. also helped.)

So I posted, but noted my action is delayed so Miyuki's effect enlarges V.V. before she attacks. Also, since Trip messes things up for Jass, I went with a bleed attack.
