"Yeah, that woman was a major dick. Seriously. If that's the norm, I will rethink my plans. I hope that she's an outlier."
”Yeah, I know, right?” Vanyan agrees with Vinas agreeing with him that that lady was a total dick. ”Sorry, *Wank*, in our enlightened times, anyone can be a dick. And don’t get me wrong. Even halflings can be dicks. Male gnomes, female gnomes, everyone...they can all be dicks. Total dicks. I agree they have the right to be a dick if they want, but I don’t have to like it. And I’ll call a dick a ‘dick’ when I think they are being a dick,” Vanyan explains as best he can to the Ulfen yokel.
”I’m not saying your suspicions are wrong, *Wank*, but only that it might not be the case. She just might be a dick by nature and not because of the situation. I dunno. Let’s go see Veena.”
Atium of Varg
Atium laughs heartily.
Yes, Twink. You bring up good points. I need to broaden my thinking. You'd be a good teacher.
Atium chuckles again as the sheer volume of dick references.
Veena, Veena? What kind of accomplishments did she do?
Realizing that he just assumed Veena was a female name, he speaks up.
Wait, Wait, Wait. Before I make a *Wank* mistake I just got educated on, I'll bet any one of you 2 gold pieces that Veena's actually a guy. Any takers?

Tall and lanky, Veena Heliu eschews the military uniforms and armor common among Vigil’s leaders in favor of ornate robes with faint dragon-scale patterns that accent her hair. She wears several wands on a sash around her waist. She speaks about the value of impromptu and unexpected tactics on the battlefield—a subject that disturbs traditionalist audience members.
Aishe gets the sense that Veena takes great pride in her position as leader of the Battlemage Academy and favors admirers. Flattery seems like the way to go.

"Greetings! I am Teseenarin. My friends and I have traveled from the town of Rosler's Coffer, which has been destroyed, most likely by a weapon of great magical power. We also encountered a magical item of great power that poisoned the air around the town. We fear that the same weapon may be used here. Someone of your obviously astute magical prowess and knowledge undoubtedly would be interested in such a possible event and perhaps could even offer up a defense."

Atium walks up with the rest of the group and sees that Veena is actually a woman. He really should have gone with his instincts and not some Twink mind-whammy. It cost him 4 gold as he pulls out two gold in each hand and gives them to the two companions that actually made a bet with him.
Well, I pay my bets.

Veena seems deep in thought as she hears the story and thinks out loud. "Magical devastation of that scale would have had to have some warning or sign before hand." She patiently—and a bit pedantically explains. "Perhaps the often overlooked illusionary magic?" She sees the seriousness in Tessenarin's face as Vanyan backs him up. "Perhaps, perhaps...please investigate this further if you will and let me know what you find. I will need more information if we are to defend against an unknown weapon."
Tessenarin
"Thank you very much. We will return, I assure you."
He then moves the group away from Veena.
"It seems we have not met with much success thus far. Most refuse to believe us without proof. It seems everyone says "Come back when you have proof. I suppose it was to be expected. Our tale must seem fantastical to them. The only option I believe we have now is to head to this waystation we were pointed to find this Doeswen person. Vinas, do you agree? Would you like to lead the way?
Vanyan Kaleseder
Vanyan takes his 2 gold from Atium, biting each of them in turn to ensure their authenticity.
”Easiest money I ever made, *Wank*,” Vanyan jangles his winnings in one hand, wondering how to spend his free money. It’s a relative lot of money, good for a full night of drinking and food, or a visit to a decent Calistrian temple.
He ponders even as the thanks Veena for the help.
”Say Master Veena, did you want any of the book or research we recovered from the site? Even the diary of those that created it? Would that be helpful?”
Atium of Varg
Our tale must seem fantastical to them.
Well, the bartender at the Ulfen Inn last night believed our story about going to the land of the dead.
Atium probably not fully understanding that she *didn't* believe Atium last night and was being sarcastic. Hey, didn't some of those worldbreakers have magic books that had power words in them?
He looks a bit closer and squints. This lady might just be a world breaker herself!
The people flock around her in this city, do they not know that she'll do magics that will burn their straw cottages and turn their cows inside out?
Atium backs away, feeling a level of panic rising.

She grabs the thick book. "Sure, it will take me a little bit to go over this. Come back with more if you can."
Aishe Danior
Aishe is uneasy handing over their hard earned loot - though he understands the reason. He wonders if they'll ever see that book again - she seemed a little grabby. He wonders if any of these so-called fine folk might be in league with the enemy. Time will tell.
"Sure Tess, let's head over to learn what we can from Doeswen." he agrees and starts heading over with the others.

Many fortified way stations guard the highways and waterways of Lastwall, beacons of civilization that bring order to the wilderness. Ranton Gandry has directed you to one such fortification, the Northgate Road way station, situated at a natural choke point within a series of winding canyons. The
station consists of a watch tower constructed atop a bluff and a 30-foot-high fortified wall built across the road. The wall includes a large gate with a lowered portcullis, where guards question travelers.
An imposing brick wall 30 feet tall blocks passage through this canyon. Three corpses hang from ropes tied to the wall’s crenelations, twisting slowly and staining the wall a gruesome red. Beneath the dangling corpses, a portcullis gate 20 feet high and 15 feet wide stands closed. A whitewashed stone building looms on a bluff to the east.
The central corpse isn’t actually dead, as his feeble kicks barely distinguish him from the swaying of the two genuine corpses on either side.

Vanyan's stomach growls.

He draws a potion as he moves, quaffing it at the base of the wall. He then climbs it, nimbly as a spider (Potion of Spider Climb) until he gets level with the dying man. Holding the rope, he draws his dagger and cuts him free, lowing him to the ground so as not to kill him with the fall.
Leaving him to the healers in the party, he climbs back up carefully and peaks over the crenelations trying to see what might be seen in the courtyard. He keeps low so as to try and stay out of sight.

Vanyan's stomach grumbles loudly as he grows hungry. Seeing the carnage Aishe quickly chugs a potion that allows him to stick to the walls like a spider. He quickly reaches the rampart and cuts the man free, slowly lowering him down below to the others as he remains in hiding.
A large winch stands at the western edge of this parapet walk that Aishe clings to the side of, opposite stairs leading down into a whitewashed building. Carved crenellations resembling roaring lions line the walk.
Aishe peers around the crenellation as he hears a bit of noise. He can see three wights up here with him, hunched over the bodies of four dead knights. The wights are searching the bodies and preparing nooses to hang them like the other three knights.

Aishe, doing the math on his fingers thinks, That leaves three for me. At my best, I could never defeat that many. He sinks sadly down, I need Vizzini Vanyan to plan. I have no gift for strategy.
He climbs back down head first, moving fast, back to the group before he gives a whispered report, ”There are three wights on the walls, about to toss over three more dead knights. Maybe more in the courtyard, maybe not. I didn't see.”
He thinks a moment, and draws another flask, ”I can go invisibly back over the wall and open the gate, but be ready for battle.”
He waits for a better idea before quaffing the invisibility potion and heading back out, and over the wall.

Tessenarin's concern very much on his mind, he shrugs hoping the gate isn't too hard to open - at least enough to let in the others.
Aishe takes out a potion of invisibility and hesitates, "I'm not sure you should take this on an empty stomach. You should've eaten something before we left." he digs in his pack briefly and comes up with some lint-free jerky and hands it over with the potion.
When Vanyan is ready, Aishe will climb the battlements once again, careful to avoid the wights as best he can before climbing back down into the courtyard. He looks for the winch mechanism for the portcullis.

Vanyan knows a thing or two about wights. Mainly that their touch alone is enough to drain a person of their vitality. Energy level drain They also have a vulnerability to being resurrected.
Quaffing a couple potions Vanyan and Aishe quickly make it back above. A large winch stands at the western edge of this parapet walk.Right next to the green wight
Meanwhile down below Tessenarin uses the wand on the wounded man to stop him from dying. His eyes slowly open in fear as he scurries back on the ground on all fours. "What happened? Who are you?"

Aishe raised the gate enough for you to pass underneath before hooking it in place. Still underneath the walkway the trio of dead guards come swinging down.
