Mysteries Under Moonlight | The Paths We Choose

Venture-Captain Sir Canayven Heidmarch has summoned each of you Pathfinders to a meeting in a private residence outside of Korvosa to discuss a hitherto unknown treasure trove hidden in the Vaults of Korvosa 5 years ago by the ex-Pathfinder Sascha Antif-Arah. When you arrive you are led to a room with sparse refreshments, tea, ale, bread, and cheese. You are told the Venture-Captain will be with you once everyone arrives...

Rosie is a sneaky little gnome who looks like a little human girl. She has brown hair done up in pig pails, pale pink eyes, and a skinny little body. She is wearing a sleeveless, short, pink dress, with stretchy yellow shorts peeking out underneath, and comfy shoes on her feet, which are pink with little white rabbits on them. She has a white backpack on, and a purse strapped around her, which has a little brown rabbit peeking out from inside it. Rosie hurries to the fancy house, curious what suckers she'd be teamed up with this time.

Right before heading inside the building, Rosie cracks her knuckles. "Time to get to work!" She's a proud girl, and brave, but when she walks up to the manor she looks nervous, weak, and scared. She looks at her toes as she walks, and crosses her arms across her tummy. She whimpers as she meets the others in the manor, and looks around with big, scared eyes. She lets out a whimper of fright, and hurries over into the corner of the room. She sits in the corner with her back against the wall, and she pulls her rabbit up to her chest. As the others talk she watches her rabbit.

Eventually she squeaks out her name in a shy little voice. "My name is Rosie Tangletop..." She looks at her twitching little rabbit and adds, "And... this is Lily." Then she whimpers again and buries her chin in her rabbits fur. She peeks around the rabbit and watches the others with her odd, wide eyes.

----

When her brothers walk in Rosie grins widely. "Oh, hey, guys!" she exclaims in a loud voice -- very different than a moment ago. "Way to wreck my acting!" she lets out a loud laugh. "Guess there's no point pretending now!"

She hops up to her feet and holds out her hand to the Pathfinders she doesn't know. "I'm Rosie. I find its best if people underestimate me. But, don't be fooled! I'm not as weak as I seem to be! Oh! And if we're out on a mission and I got back to acting like a scared little girl, then treat me like one! Got it?"

She turns back to her brother Jastrokan. She goes to give him a big hug and realizes he's covered in paint. Instead she pats him on the back. "Nice to see ya' pal!"

She runs over to Toban and gives him a big hug. "Look at how big Lily's gotten! Do you see? I've been taking good care of her since you have her to me! We're doing great! Oh! Did I tell you I got a job as a chef at the Wounded Wisp! Neat, huh? They think I'm a kid!" she says with a laugh.

Then she looks she looks at the people she doesn't know. "So? Who are you?"

Jastrokan is a chipper little golden-eyed gnome with a wide, smiling face framed all around by fluffy red hair. He takes great pride in his appearance, and keeps his hair and beard will brushed. He wears a white button up shirt and two vests -- one blue (worn buttoned up) and one orange (worn open). His pants are black and around his neck is a little blue ascot. On his feet are good sturdy walking shoes. He wears a backpack that is bulging with gear, and carries a whole bunch of paint brushes sticking out of his pockets and belt. His fingers are stained by different colours of paint. On one of his arms is a wooden buckler that has been painted with a beautiful picture of a sunset and birds. He also wears a satchel, from which peeks a colourful little songbird.

While he waits for his first mission, Jastrokan paints a picture.

"Hi, everyone! I'm Jastrokan. Jastrokan Tangletop! Adventurer Artist Extraordinaire! And this little beauty," he gestures to his fat, beautiful little songbird, "Is Queen Singsong."

The little bird tweets a chipper tune.

"Nice to see you again, Rosie! I'm glad we get to work together!" He gestures at Rosie and explains to the others, "Rosie is my twin sister."

A strong looking woman with thick brown hair held back by an ancient, red bead headband strides up into the room. She has a fierce smile upon her face and is dressed in a fine chain shirt and a lush, white fur cloak. Around her waist is an elaborate leather belt, tooled in the Ulfen style to display stylized linnorms. A well-made longsword is sheathed at her side, alongside a wand, while her belt pouches clink with the sounds of vials and potions contained within. Her backpack looks quite full.

She offers everyone a smile and an outstretched hand.

"Hail and well met! I am Lovissa, of the line of Halenbane. Daughter of Mergerice, and Granddaughter of Abrenica and Ferdinand! Famous Pathfinders, all!" She shakes hands firmly, and with enthusiasm before continuing. "I am a wanderer at heart, and explorer! A discoverer of history, both epic and small! My deeds are many and my legend is great! You may have heard the songs they sing of me in Absalom's bars. I am the saviour of Janira Gavix, Balenor Forsend, Amara Li, and Iko Tsuneo, Slayer of the Minotaur of the Kortos Caverns, Hero of Diobel, Investigator for the city of Ridonport, as well as it's Hero and Saviour, Victor of the Battle of Arnisant House, and Honoured Patron of Arnisant House Museum! Jatrokan suddenly smiles. He pulls out a bunch of paintings and lines them up like an art exhibit. "I am Jastrokan Tangletop! Artist or thousands of paintings! I especially like to paint things that are very hard to find! These ones are from my last mission. Exotic creatures, ancient ruins, and lost civilizations! I befriended some goblins, and defeated an evil goblin gang, too!"

The paintings he pulled out show scenes from a recent adventure. One is of an elf lady with short hair, falling into a pit trap. Later that same lady is shown stabbing a bugbear with a skinny sword, so she must have survived. Another painting shows Toban negotiating with a bugbear with a pole arm. Another shows Toban being beaten up by that guy and shot in the air from the wounds. Another painting shows Rosie kicking a goblin so hard below the belt that he shoots up into the air in pain. The other painting of Rosie shows her laughing. There's also a painting of a purple-skinned elf man firing a bow, and later that same person set on fire. It looks painful. There's a few paintings of Jastrokan, one where he looks scared, one where he's healing someone, and one where he's painting a magical picture in the air. There's also some pretty paintings of a garden, and another painting of a dirty, wet, room full of pipes, ladders and goblin enemies.

Jastrokan looks very proud as he shows off his paintings. "Do you like art? What kinds of things have you fought?"

A short gnome arrives wearing a leather outfit and a tophat. The gnome has a wildly long black moustache and a large bottom lip. The little gnome carries a wicker basket in his arms. On his back is a fine backpack and a very fine glaive.

“Greetings. I’m Toban Tangletop."

“Jastrokan! Rosie! Hello! Hello!” Toabn is very excited to see his siblings again and gives them a big hug.

“The Wounded Wisp? Nicely done Rosie!” Toban pats Lily on the head. “Oh yes! And her whiskers are getting longer too!”

"That's a mighty fine painting there, Jastrokan."

"Well met, Lovissa. I am Master Chef Toban Tangletop, servant of Shelyn! I too, defeated a terrifying minotaur! I have also foiled the plans of the Aspis Consortium's alchemists by stopping the spread of a dangerous drug. I was with my siblings when we thwarted the goblin gang. "

Seeing Jastrokan's many paintings Toban taps his lip. POP POP POP Looking a little embarrassed he adds, "I'm not sure I remember all of that happening like that..."

And the adventure begins...

The ramshackle tenement outside of Korvosa softly echoes with the sound of light rain as Venture-Captain Sir Canayven Heidmarch begins his briefing. “For this mission you will have to venture into the sewers beneath Korvosa. Sascha Antif-Arah,” he announces, gesturing to a haggard human woman who is past her prime but whose posture expresses confidence and experience, “requires access to a particular vault. The society is going to help her.”

Grand Lodge

Mysteries Under Moonlight | The Paths We Choose

Sascha eyes each Pathfinder in turn then nods to herself with some satisfaction and steps forward gracefully. “Some years ago my friends and I had made quite a name for ourselves around Korvosa, and our adventures earned us a considerable amount of gold. We stashed most of it in one of the Vaults after evicting the cult that had already claimed it.”

Sascha pauses for a moment, smiles, and shakes her head as if recalling particularly amusing details of the raid. “Anyway, I retired from the business after that, started up a shop, and lived peacefully until I got into trouble with the Hellknights.

“I can’t show my face in Korvosa because I don’t fancy spending my retirement in shackles, but I’m willing to cede my share of the loot in that Vault to you. It’s no dragon’s hoard, but it should be more than worth your time. The only thing I want from there is an old locket—nothing magical or worth fencing, but it means a lot to me. Once I have it, I’m getting out of this place and off to somewhere the Order of the Nail has no sway.

“The entrance shouldn’t be too hard to find, assuming you know what to look for,” she remarks as she fishes several folded papers from her haversack. “There’s an old service entrance into the sewers about a quarter mile north of my old shop in Midland; I wrote down directions that should lead you to the vault. There’s a big room inside, and I stashed my share under the flagstones in one of the small chambers nearby.”

She extracts a few more items from her bag and holds them out. “I hope you don’t need these, but you never know. I certainly won’t be using them in my retirement. Good luck to you, Pathfinders.”

The items she gifts to the group include three +1 aberration bane arrows, two antitoxins, a vial of antiplague, and an alkali flask.

Venture-Captain Heidmarch nods and remarks. "Have you any questions for the lady?"

Toban looks at Sascha. "And are there any traps protecting this vault of yours?" While he waits for an answer Toban places down his basket and starts to pull out individually sized, piping hot meat pies, and a freshly baked load of herb bread. He sets out plates, slices the bread, and serves it alongside of the cheeses that are already here. Then he passes out a meat pie and bread to everyone. "Danger requires a hearty meal!"

Sascha nods to the gnome as she accepts a meat pie. "You are correct, it is dangerous indeed. It's been years since I've been there and I recall no traps...but Korvosa’s sewers had lots of blackboil alligators, so I wouldn’t go for a swim unless you really have to. My group ran into some other strange creatures years ago, but our scholar usually identified them for us; I don’t remember what they were.”

She gives the gnome a wink.

Then she turn to little Rosie. "Hail and well met, Rosie of the line of Tangletop, sister to Toban and Jastrokan! Goblin Bane, Dedicated cook, and a woman of many faces! Be proud you are brave and clever enough to seize every advantage you can. History is written by the survivors, after all!" She pats the little rabbit. "And greetings to you, Lily Brown-fur!"

With a grin at the gnomish trio she remarks, "I am proud to be witness to your growing legend!"

When Sascha and Canayven arrive Lovissa greets them both with a firm and hearty handshake. "Hail and well met! I am Lovissa, of the line of Halenbane. With a bow of her head she adds, "I'm honoured to meet you!"

As the group settles in for the meeting, Lovissa takes a seat, leans back in her chair, and rests her feet up onto another empty seat.

At the words Hellknights, Lovissa curls up her lip in distaste. "Hellknights? The same as those in Cheliax? Interesting." After a moment she nods, "Ah, yes. Korvosa was once a Chelish holding. Of course. It's my first visit to Korvosa. I had nearly forgotten its history." she shakes her head for a moment. "What is the charter the Order of the Nail seeks to enforce? If I come upon them I'd like to know what laws not to break in advance."

At the sight of the food, Lovissa breaks out into a grin. She devours her meat pie with enthusiasm, and her fresh bread. "Mmm! Master Chef, indeed! A better meal I have never eaten, my friend. We should work together more often!" She lets out a deep belly laugh, then goes back to her food.

"The Korvosan sewers are that dangerous?! Huh. I'd never thought to seek glory in a sewer before," she shrugs. "I'm ready to meet this challenge head on!"

When she's done eating she reaches across the table and examines the maps. She makes sure she thinks she can find the shop in Midland, and follow the trail to the sewer entrance. If it's confusing she asks for clarity.

The older lady listens to Lovissa's deeds with interest but winces a bit at the question on the Hellknights. "The Order of the Nail is based here at the Citadel in Korvosa; their creed runs, 'Savagery must be quelled in the land, home, and mind.' As for my offense, apparently accidentally stepping onto the streets between Hellknights and a wanted criminal indicates that a completely innocent citizen is an accomplice. I was unjustly convicted, but I’d rather not test the local law enforcement’s patience by trying my luck out there.”

Rushing in after a lot of the conversation has happened everyone sees a rather ordinary individual attempting to cram what appears to be a journal into his backpack hanging over his shoulder while pushing along with a quarterstaff in the other hand driving his steps into the room...without a whole lot of success it appears with getting the journal seated. Another thing that is rather apparent is the bandolier crossing over his shoulder with various potions and vials in place rather than the more commonplace daggers.

Sorry...sorry for being late got caught up doing a little...

Startled by Lovissa's normal greeting.

Umm... Looks up briefly. Right doing a little research, and was think you were there with me for most of my missions so far...well other than that crazy druid ring that we were able to disrupt before they completed that ritual...but been taking a break from the crazyiness lately until Sir Heidmarch told me a break from the library would do me good.

Hearing Toban mention the various fungi and other plants Cerryl appears to feel along the outside of his pack. Hmm...wonder if they would provide anything worthwhile for an experiment...still haven't had much luck finding a better blue...or maybe a yellow.

Snatching up a meat pie and the dessert...before looking at the drying paintings.

Wonder if I can use some of the paints to get a different color...will have to compare notes at some point.

Before pulling back out the journal he had just put away he jots down a few words and then starts to copy the maps into the journal.

Hmm...Hmmm

Conferring together, Toban and Cerryl recall this about Hellknights in general:

The Hellknights are a collection of knightly orders with a unique focus on the promulgation of law. They are interested less in the social goodness and charity typical of paladins, but rather in the foundation and stringent maintenance of order at all costs. In their iron-handed exaction of law—specifically, the laws of their various orders and their home country of Cheliax—Hellknights emulate the organized and effective armies of Hell. They are not concerned with morality or methods, only results.

And of the local Order of the Nail here in Korvosa:

One of the original seven orders of Hellknights, the Order of the Nail concerns itself with quelling "savage" practices and bringing their idea of civilization to the inhabitants of the wild frontier. While they have aided the local government at times, these Hellknights instead pursue their own agenda and follow their own ideals of law and justice.

I will move us forward in the morning. You can still ask questions and talk among each other...and if you can think of any last minute items you might need, you can purchase those now...

Toban tugs on his moustache while Cerryl tries to catch up. "Yes, yes! Welcome! Come on in. Have a meat pie and cupcake. Now, what did you say your name was?" Toban tugs on his moustache some more. "Or did you say?"

"Ah, yes! Welcome Cerryl!"

Toban taps his bottom lip, POP POP POP then rattles off what he knows about Hellknights.

At the sight of Cerryl's journal, Toban taps it with his finger. "Any good recipes in here? I do enjoy trying new things. Mmmm... Yes. I do, indeed!"

Not much of a cook sadly so haven't really documented any recipes for food...have a couple of different formulas for some inks that I have been tinkering with in my downtime.

Probably need to buy some stuff but not sure what would be worthwhile currently and unlike most of my other characters; if Cerryl is using his weapons or needing armor then already in a bad spot.

Since no more questions are asked, Venture-Captain Heidmarch rises and dismisses your party. "Good luck, Pathfinders, you had best be on your way. You will report back here upon completion of your mission. A guide will lead you to the sewer entrance. Explore, report, cooperate!"

Mysteries Under Moonlight | The Paths We Choose

You and your companions are led to the entrance of the sewers...

A rusty, slime-encrusted steel ladder descends into the Korvosan sewers, whose tunnels stretch to the north, east, and south like roads in an underground city. Curtains of fungus and mold hang from the ceilings, which rise roughly ten feet above the tunnels’ walkways, which run along either side of the sewage channels. Occasional dim patches of light filter in from the streets above providing minimal illumination. Despite the sickening smell of decay, the tunnels are free of garbage, waste, and the other byproducts of Korvosan life.

Slide 2

While there are patches of dim light, the party, especially Lovissa and Cerryl, will probably need a light source...the 'water' level in this part of the sewer is relatively shallow, even for gnomes...

Jastrokan enters the sewers and looks around. "Wow! This will surely make a gross, but amazing painting. Look at the light and mold..." He points straight. "I want to go that way." Then he stops, and realizes there is no path that way. He doesn't really want to jump over the canal, either... He thinks some more. "Yup, I still want to go that way."

Very carefully he jumps over the canal, asking Lovissa to help toss him so he doesn't land in the water.

Rosie buys some rubber boots before entering the sewer, so her awesome shoes don’t get dirty. (How much does that cost? Oh! And my brother is saying he wants to do that too, so Jastrokan also buys rubber boots). When she climbs down into the sewer she tries to ignore the smell. It doesn’t work very well, though. She looks around. She decides to follow Jastrokan, so she walks carefully through the water in her rubber boots, and then moves in front of him.

A little concerned that some of the gifted items were antitoxin and plague; Cerryl decides to swing by a shop on the way to the sewers and pick up another set of each.

Sadly apparently while he was buying more potions was when the rest of the group were investing in a set of waterproof boots...which he didn't think about buying.

Hesitating slightly while the gnomes all jump across. Cerryl looks a little dubiously at the water and then his regular shoes.

Well think Imma need to be buying another set of shoes at least after this...and maybe get rid of these clothes also

Jumping across after the gnomes Cerryl is still a ways back and pauses again to cast his own Light at his mirror amulet that he is wearing around his neck. Afterwards just as he starts to continue down the tunnel he stops again when he hears Toban calling out the dead end.

The beast halts upon spying the party, roaring and whipping its toothed tentacles across the walls and ceiling in a most impressive manner. Curiously, it does not attack...
