"As best we can tell, we are heading toward the shard of greed. We believe it to be in the Crow. It seems other people with the shard of pride have been drawn here to find it but have failed. We have opened a pair of 'paradox gates' that have to lead us deeper into the Crow then any other previous groups."
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
Natalya nods slowly, "That is strange magic indeed. How many shards are there? I should speak to Venture Captain Heidelmark to be sure, but I will help you. These shards are dangerous. We should stop them."
She speaks fairly shortly, in stark contrast to Von Dai. It's clear that common is not her first language.
Von-Dai Cress |
"There's also the fact that I don't think we have access to the magic we would need to protect ourselves. The ancient Thassilonians were some of the most powerful wizards to ever live, and if the Shattered Star consists of seven shards, and each of these shards is potent in its own right, the power used to forge such an artifact likely means the curse of each shard is beyond our abilities. The good news is that the curse is likely tied in some way to to the related sin. In this case, the curse will likely encourage the bearer to accumulate wealth by any means necessary, and to hoard such wealth. It may also make them incredibly selfish, but that is hardly a unique attitude amongst Pathfinders."
Von-Dai thinks a moment, frowning, then looks at Natalya and Zeltyieli and says, "Given the nature of the curse, how would your gods feel if you were forced to act on it?"
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
"The Dawnbringer believes in forgiveness. If I fell, then she would forgive me if my... sorrow was real." Natalya replies. "I hope she would give me the strength to resist it though."
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Zeltyieli shrugs, "The Immaculate Joy is a little less prescriptive than many other deities... And, given that it would be magical compulsion, I would think he'd be pretty understanding...". He then starts to chuckle, "..though, maybe a little less so were I to be overcome by sloth."
Erond Niroden |
"Old deadeye hates nothing more than giving ones self over to death but he cares about the hunt and protection of communities. I think as long as I were to not fall and I was pursuing the safety of others my conscience would be clear."
Von-Dai Cress |
In answer to Sevrus’s question, Von-Dai said, ”As near as we can tell, possession of the Shard seems to trigger the curse. Based on Natalya’s description, anyway. She said she picked it up, and suddenly felt she couldn’t be under someone else’s authority any more, and needed to set out on her own. The curse took effect instantly - separating it from her without violence took some careful words and quick thinking.”
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Zeltyieli nods at Von-dai's statement, "Does it need to touch skin? Would we be protected with gloves or wrapping it in a cloak? Assuming, of course, we can win it away from its current owner."
Von-Dai Cress |
”The effects of the Shard of Pride and its slotted Ioun stone work even from within the handy haversack Venture-Captain Heidmarch gave us. I don’t think gloves or wrapping it in a cloak will help.”

The team of Pathfinders travel to the doc, get in their boat and begin the long row out to the Crow. Once there the group secures the boat and retraces their steps through the labyrinthian corridors. Fades murals of Thassilon adorn the walls of this ransacked fortress. They enter in formation on the east side first-floor travel up to the fourth floor and back down to the west side of the first floor where they find the remains of two dead amoebas and a bloodstain on the floor.
From this location, there are three paths (NE), a narrow crack to the southeast and a stairway down toward the northwest.
Where would you like to resume investigating? First two votes decide.
Von-Dai Cress |
"Let's start by looking to the northeast, clear that room, and then see about securing the rest of this floor before we descend to the next level."
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Zeltyieli nods, "Seems reasonable. Just remember that I can look through walls, if it would help."
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
Natalya nods and looks to Marcus for a cue. "Who goes next? I do not want to get in your way..."
Shield or Hammer?

I will take a stealth check from Sevrus, please.
On slide 2 if everyone can make sure their tokens are in the general marching order (you can change them anytime) and that all initiatives and perceptions are up to date.
GM_Grandlounge |
Everyone hears the sound of agitated chittering bats.
Von-Dai: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Darjiah: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Erond: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Sevrus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Zeltiyeli: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Natalya: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Bats: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Erond and Darjiah's rolls are more place holders I think you 5 will be fine. Darjiah is welcome to jump in whenever.

Von-Dai looks at the swarm in consternation - he hadn't particularly planned for swarms. Still, he could do something. Casting a spell, he hurled two bolts of force at it.
Magic Missile: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
Natalya hovers, looking uncertain.
"What must I do?" She asks, clearly not sure how to fight a horde of tiny vermin!
GM_Grandlounge |
Servus a 5ft to the right gets you out of the bats. I have moved you
Servus moves forward and attacks but there is too much chaos and she can't seem to hit enough of the bats to disperse the swarm.
Marcus's readied action went off but they are seeming ineffective against so many diminutive creatures.
Von-Dai's Nature Check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
The magic missle would target a single bat so it would do little to disrupt the swarm (I will let you retcon casting the spell).
A swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target Spells such as Disintegrate), with the exception of mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms) if the swarm has an Intelligence score and a hive mind. A swarm takes half again as much Damage (+50%) from Spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash Weapons and many Evocation Spells.
Swarms made up of Diminutive or Fine creatures are susceptible to high winds, such as those created by a Gust of Wind spell. For purposes of determining the effects of wind on a swarm, treat the swarm as a Creature of the same size as its constituent creatures. A swarm rendered unconscious by means of Nonlethal Damage becomes disorganized and dispersed, and does not reform until its Hit Points exceed its Nonlethal Damage.
Von-Dai Cress |
As he prepares to cast a spell, Von-Dai pauses, realizing that his magic missiles would do no good against its numbers. He does, however, have some alchemical items he'd forgotten about. Pulling out an alchemist's fire, he called out, "Everyone, duck!" and threw it at the swarm. "If you have alchemical cocktails, use them!"
Alchemist's Fire, into melee, vs touch: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 11
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Damage is +50%, since it's an area attack. 1 Splash damage to all creatures adjacent.
GM_Grandlounge |
Von has the right idea but the bats dip and dive (I am assuming you were aiming at the back left square to avoid splashing allies).
1d8 ⇒ 6
The flask flies a little farther than intended. It cracks upon hitting the wall spraying alchemist fire in a slight mist toward the bats before tumbling into the water. The bats take 1 damage.

1d8 ⇒ 4
Two flasks fly through the air, with Marcus's flying wide but without any friendly fire. Zeltyieli's hits a dozen bats. This attack causes the bats to become frantic and go after Marcus and Natalya.

Sorry, when did Zeltyieli get caught in the swarm?
Zeltyieli reaches down to his belt then sighs, Only had one of those..., then sees the wounds his companions have taken. At least I can help with that, he thinks, and places a hand against his holy symbol, filling himself with power, feeling it rise within him, filling his lungs and legs until they burn like he'd just run several miles... and then he releases it, mentally slamming a wall between the power and the bats...
Channel (Selective): 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10 Should stop the bleed.
GM_Grandlounge |
Nope, sorry that was supposed to be Natalya. It will be fixed in the next full post.
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
Fort: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Easily shaking off the slight feeling of nausea and glad to see that her plan for distracting the swarm has worked Natalya whirls her flail around, hoping to keep their attention.
I assume this swarm is too small for weapon damage?
Von-Dai Cress |
Von-Dai shrugs at Natalya's actions, then pulls out another flask of alchemist's fire, and then throws it at the swarm.
Attack vs touch, in melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 4 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
GM_Grandlounge |
If Marcus and Firebird get out of the swarm so there are no melee penalties you may hit. If you want to try that.
Natalya 'the Firebird' |
Natalya strides back through the swarm in the opposite direction, hoping to draw the rest of the swarm back towards her.
