Also I'm probably pushing it but wondering about the availability of:
Poisons
Common magic items (the Xanathar's type)
Lodestone or legit magnet
Walnut sized chunk of amber
Riding dog + Scram sized tack

Scramsax |

Forgot about this as well...
The silvered raven with the garnet and the hide covered book are not magical, but the book would make a suitable spellbook.
What could I get for both?
Sorry for message spam, have had a few snow days to look back over stuff and ponder. Plus I've been wanting to go shopping since like April 1st, 2020 (when Scramsax dropped everything in the flowers).

Despite growing some and being a center for a minor military build up, Nargenstal is still a very small town.
So any magic items will be tough to find. A 2 in 10 chance you could locate a common item from Xanathar's. Price will depend on your Charisma check.
Lodestone or magnet is available, and you could find some amber well enough.
No trained riding dogs here. Some of the newly arrived guard might have an attack dog, but that might require some RP.
Poisons, not for open sale. Again this might be something you'd be able to track down, but would require getting to know the 'right people' among the new arrivals. Yet another Charisma check.
You all also now have the flying rug, so you'll actually be able to reach a larger city much easier from here on.
In Nargenstal, you can sell the raven for 25gp. There isn't much interest in the blank book, one young soldier offers you 5 gold for it, which you know is probably a 10th of its real value.

Scramsax |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Ok, so 640 gold for the 32 chess pieces, then 30 for the other stuff makes a party total of 670 gold. Split 4 ways its 167.5 gold each(167 gold 5 silvers).
2 in 10, so 80 or higher on percent dice.
Pole of Collapsing: 1d100 ⇒ 87
Talking Doll: 1d100 ⇒ 64
Price Check Isle 5, Pole of Collapsing: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Poison Hunt: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Halfling Luck!: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
So we'll just forget about those things. XD I blame leprechauns for spreading their disease.
For magnet and amber, they aren't listed in 5e but I guess those things would be in a spell component pouch...so 25gp and 2lbs. (I remember someone making a list of all the stuff inside a spell pouch but cant find it at the moment)

Oh, and he needs a new pipe. Will pay top $$$ for a nice thick glass one that's easy to clean. 10gp?

Gunnar Thorstein |

Gunnar had searched for supplies and tools in Radovan's place to repair the circlet of blasting and the rod of bubbles, but I don't know what he found. In any case, here are the items we liberated in addition to the flying carpet, as we may decide to sell them at some point soon.
You finally get around to examining the items found by Aterro and Luthael. Since Aterro is in a rush to don the armor, that is the first item you bring under your investigative scrutiny. Splint mail. Fine quality, although in need of a little oil and scouring. It has been imbued with the power to help the wearer resist harm from acids once he has attuned himself to the magic.
The rug is a valuable find and helps potentially solve some of your transportation challenges. You're surprised to find such a thing tucked away in the north since such flying carpets are more common among the powers of the far south. Why and how Radovan came by such and item and why he's willing to part with it, is a bit puzzling.
You confirm that the potions are what they are labeled. No sneaky poisons or curses hidden within the multicolored brews. Two are marked as Greater Healing in the same handwritten scrawl you recognize as belonging to Radovan. The others four are labeled, Elixir of Health, Resistance (Fire), Water Breathing, Hill Giant.
The circlet is a fairly standard Circlet of Blasting. But the damage has made using the item potentially dangerous. Perhaps with the right equipment and some time, the item could be repaired. It will function, but you estimate that with each use there is a one in four chance the wearer will be subject to some kind of arcane feedback or mishap.
The oar is an interesting piece of craftsmanship. Very useful for any avid fisherman you might know. For that is because when activated, the oar can be instructed to row a small boat by itself, merely following your mental commands. If given a destination, it will proceed on a steady course avoiding other boats and dangers as best it can.
Finally, you set down to examine the metal staff. Another unusual item. At first you can't see what property it might have beyond providing a bit of eerie eldritch light within a darkened room. But then you take a closer look at the crystal and the series of tiny hidden mirrors and arcane enhancers that line the upper end of the item. You realize that when activate the staff can generate a powerful blase of eldritch energy up to three times a day before the crystal looses its charge.
Splint Armor of Resistance (Acid), Carpet of Flying, Circlet of Blasting (Damaged), Silvered Oar, Clockwork Staff of Eldritch Retribution
The lead weight with its stripped candy ribbon, tingles with elemental power. Delving further into the enchantment you realize that when the ribbon and weight are attached to a melee weapon, the item provides an added boost to the destructive potential of any blow. In addition, it can be used to create an elemental aura to the damage making it either fire, cold, lightning, or simple force depending on what the user desires.
The peculiar looking rod is like nothing you've encountered previously. The combination of Abjuration and Transformation magic appears to be designed to entrap a mid-sized target within a magical, water filled bubble. Live creatures within are restrained unless they can swim. In addition, they cannot breath without the ability to do so underwater. Based on your calculations of the power to arcane storage capacity of the rod it can be used up to 3 times. Unfortunately, the recharge crystal and casting is missing, so once the current storage is used the item becomes little more than an unusual paperweight.
To your surprise, the necklace of teeth is a protective item. The necromantic enchantment is designed to absorb such energies when they attempt to harm the wearer. It seems each undead tooth can take on a small amount of necromantic energy before withering to uselessness.
The bag is filled with potent magic. After closer examination, you find it to be a more familiar and potentially dangerous item if not handled carefully. Peeking inside you do not find gems or pearls or stones, despite the heavy weight. Instead you find six fat, curved beans in a variety of different colors.
The silvered raven with the garnet and the hide covered book are not magical, but the book would make a suitable spellbook.
Plumb of the Elements (Add proficiency bonus to damage rolls, +3 maximum. Can choose to make additional damage fire, cold, lightning, or force. Requires attunement), Rob of Bubbles (3 charges, requires attunement), Corpsedigger's Necklace (40 points of Necrotic Damage absorbtion), Bag of Beans.

At well over 400 years old, the value of a complete set would be much, much greater than the sum of its individual parts if put in front of the right dealer in Zobeck, Harkesh, or one of the Seven Cities.
You all also now have the flying rug, so you'll actually be able to reach a larger city much easier from here on.
Whoa! Hold up there, Tex!
Scramsax, are you...suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure?
Are you sure you don't wanna hold on and wait?
The DM is giving us a straight-up hint that we might be able to score a nice windfall here.
Don't get me wrong. I like money. As much as the next guy. But will 160gp really do any of us any real good? As you say, that's barely enough to kit out a 1st level char, and not really enough to get an item of real value (if we could find it.)
But to have an order of magnitude or more better? And in a major city to find and buy things?
Let us not pass up this opportunity out of hand.
We all know that Tareth is a -very- good DM but he falls on the stingy side with phat lewt. For him to put an opportunity in front of us like this might make the difference of having level-appropriate gear and losing a fight that we should win.
Do any of us want our character to die because we couldn't be bothered with some basic economics?
Just sayin'. =)

Scramsax |

Yeah I'm kind of sick of being a thief stealing stuff all the time with 0 gold coins. I have those Zove gems but can't fence them in Narg.
I guess party vote it if you guys want to wait.

Gunnar Thorstein |

Gunnar will front you 50 gold pieces if you need it to resupply. He'd like to have that blank spellbook so he can make a spare as he has time.
He can try to repair those magic items, and we could try and sell what we don't need/want in a big city to better equip ourselves.
Of course, there is the Commandant's secretary and a magic evil sword to deal with too...

Luthael Invictusol |

Luthael would feel uncomfortable taking any money from stolen goods from the wizard. He frankly believes Khors will provide him whatever he needs.
cheers

Scramsax |

Ugh, thanks Gunnar but that's even more lame...the Master Thief bumming a few bucks for basic supplies.
But absolutely take the spellbook, didn't know you wanted it.
Guess I'm outnumbered and cancel the purchases etc for now.

![]() |

Ha! Glory unto Thor and his understanding that the good fight needs more than strong arms!
It's hard to buy all that ale on just good intentions. =3

Gunnar Thorstein |

Does Gunnar have any luck with the damaged magic items?
Is there something he should roll?

Scramsax |

who wielded that blade and drove it into my heart
Is this new information for everybody?

Gunnar Thorstein |

So, there is a jeweler in town? Cool—now we just need some supplies. Gunnar has figured out how to fix the magic items, but he will need a jeweler with good skill and some expensive components.
Should we attempt to repair the magic items here, perhaps selling one unneeded one to finance it, or just wait and see what can be accomplished in a bigger town?
Scram, did you find any 500gp gems in your scrounging that Gunnar could use to fix one of the magic items?

Scramsax |

Scram is a jewel expert...have proficiency with jewelers tools and can boost it to wtf crazy with Psionics. My jewelers checks are like...
Jewelers: 1d20 + 5 + 1d8 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (8) = 15
...rolled 2, but you get the idea. And INVICTUSOL could Enhance Ability for advantage.
As for prices, I don't think I ever appraised them. Will have to dig back through stuff. Those gems were stolen (from my other character) in his very first post or so.

Luthael Invictusol |

Luthael were you introducing yourself to me?
Luthael did introduce himself here to Ingrid.
Currently, Luthael is introducing himself to a holy saint of Khors.
cheer

Scramsax |

Perhaps not surprising, Snicker is much more successful in his tasks. The little Octo-familiar’s undersea explorations are quite fruitful and he manages to discover and bring back several items of value previously tucked in the nooks and crannies of the sea bed beyond the protective shelter of Nargenstal’s little harbor. A silver ring, with ruby centerpiece, a simple gold chain necklace, a small trader’s box containing a handful of semiprecious stones, a dagger with no corrosion but a thin layer of ice covering the still sharp blade. A very productive haul overall.
That's all I could find on it. The dagger I still have.
An opal was used from the stash to jam the lift mechanism in the dungeon below the witch's illusory inn (when we were saving queen bee).
In my offhand RP I mentioned emeralds and rubies, but never really expected to sell them I guess (since everyone would recognize them as Zove's stolen things). So in short not sure on the details about this stolen treasure and would need Tareth's input.

Gunnar Thorstein |

The rod requires a precious gemstone of 500gp value or more plus a DC15 INT(Jewelers Tools) to repair.
The circlet requires a spool of thin gold wire (50gp value) plus a DC20 INT(Jewelers Tools) to repair.
So a gold chain could be drawn into wire and maybe that ruby might work for the rod….Nice

DM - Tareth |

Well, I'd say the ruby from the silver ring would work for the rod. And yes, the gold chain could be melted down and crafted into the wire. It is certainly doable given Scram's skill. He just needs a bit of time. Then of course it'll take time to actually reset/repair the items and for Gunnar to insure the arcane linkages are all working properly. Probably a grand total of 3-4 days of downtime style work.
We can basically hand wave this if you all want. Call the items repaired and ready for use or resale, although again, to resell them in Nargenstal you'll get a lot less than a larger town or city.

Scramsax |

newly arrived 'working girls.'
...ok there's whores in Narg now. Well noted.

Works for me. Perhaps the initial jewelry work done now, and arcane linkages done during our travels as Gunnar sits on the flying carpet...

Where is Gunnar at the moment? Luthael needs to know the story of Katrina. Luthael's player knows, but Luthael needs to know to fall all over himself

Gunnar Thorstein |

Where is Gunnar at the moment? Luthael needs to know the story of Katrina. Luthael's player knows, but Luthael needs to know to fall all over himself
"Eventually, Gunnar and Luthael seek out Illarya beneath her tree. The dryad is only to happy to transfer the sword into the nullbox. In fact, as soon as the lid snaps close both priest and wizard can see the strain and weight immediately begin to lift from the dryad's body.
The strangest occurrence of the night is as Gunnar and Luthael finish with Illarya, Katrina steps into the grove ready with a warm greeting for the dwarf. But instead her eyes are immediately drawn to the sun symbol dangling around Luthael's neck and she lets out a startled cry and steps back hastily. The fear is obvious and clear as she shakes her head, raising her wooden practice sword before her."
My understanding is that Gunnar and Luthael are currently in the grove with Illarya and Katrina.

Luthael Invictusol |

Thanks. Sorry. Thought you were doing jewelry magic items.
cheers

Gunnar Thorstein |

Sorry, I missed that the tale from the road/guardsmen was early morning. Please continue the evening dialogue and ignore Gunnar's gaffe--maybe it was just the cheering for the arm wrestling last night...

Scramsax |

Not sure Scram is in the current scene, he went back to Illarya's and fell asleep in the morning about when this is occurring.

Gunnar Thorstein |

And here I thought it was a single spell effect, but it sounds like there are multiple spells, or at least multiple anchoring points. Totally cool, but I am hoping the Arcana check allows Gunnar to figure out the best way to cast his spell…does he need to get closer, perhaps use a fourth level slot for some extra oomph, etc?
If it will help, he will get somewhat closer and/or cast the spell at fourth level. If none of that makes a difference or if his Arcana roll wasn’t high enough to figure it out, I will roll for him as you have laid out in the Gameplay thread.

![]() |

Gunnar I just wanna say that you are doing some 9000 IQ type play here!
DM: "You see a house."
Gunnar: "I cast a high-level spell to see all the stuff that's invisible!"
I mean, I have NO idea how you knew that burning that 2nd level spell would pay off but well done, sir! Well done!

Gunnar Thorstein |

Mostly just luck and trying to think like a wizard. Fully armed and threatening party shows up and the two dudes at the house are like, “Cool, come just a bit closer.” I was more thinking they had allies hidden in the tall grass or something…but invisible spell anchors with powerful concealment/illusion or something going on—no clue!

DM - Tareth |

Gunnar: Okay, so Dispel Magic only affects one object per casting. So I was incorrect in saying you could get multiple totems in one shot. I was just thinking about the range and didn't realize it was limited to one person, item, object. Based on your Arcana role, you'd guess that each totem is powering some kind of magic. Removing/Dispelling one won't shut the whole thing down, but it would likely weaken the overall effectiveness or coverage of whatever is enchanting the area.
To learn any more about the actual affects of the magic, I think you'd need Detect Magic going.

Gunnar Thorstein |

Yeah, he was trying to hit the overall spell effect.
“ Choose one creature, object, or magical effect within range. ”
If they are individual spell effects with overlapping area of effect or something like that, he can only get one. If they are all part of a single magical effect, he may be able to unravel that top-level effect and/or connection to the totem anchors, but we are getting pretty far into theory here.
DM call, of course—would casting at 4th level help? He would also be willing to cast Detect Magic fist if that helps him target the top level magical effect and not just a single totem.
Don’t want to make it too complicated, but trying to play a smart wizard…just let me know what I need to roll and we can flavor it for maximum coolness…

Luthael Invictusol |

Hey Gunnar
Luthael has Dispel Magic prepared, too.
cheers

Gunnar Thorstein |

Thanks Luthael! A great reminder--and Gunnar is asking for your help...

![]() |

Ingryd, I see no reason to descend to melee. How about just stay above the three and keep smacking the spell caster?

Scramsax |

So I doubt you guys even read my silly little psionic energy posts but I had this idea where Prince Valenden (head honcho of the Court of One Million Stars) was aware of and guarding the knowledge Dawnflower possessed. I was kind of thinking Prince Valenden is like Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and has authority over people's dreams as well. So when Scram tried to loot Dawnflower's memories in his own mind he already had a fortress installed there...along with his favorite ambassador.
Also just thought it would be neat to get Scram and Zove together.
Anymore's writing might be Vael Turog's diplomatic attempt to bargain with the Prince to gain said Dawnflower knowledge (which Zove is overseeing), or Scram imagined it that way. ;D

Gunnar Thorstein |

Was Gunnar’s attack against the Redcap successful last round? It wasn’t mentioned in the recap, but it was intended to give the foe disadvantage on his attack if he failed his save.
If he makes his save a second time, Gunnar will likely change tactics for this round.
