Adventures in Oakstead

Game Master Foxy Quickpaw

Oakstead Village Map

This game will not be the typical pathfinder adventure. The world is not in danger of ending. No one will leave their homes to become famous.

It is just about a bunch of kids, that have to help their parents with the daily work and play in the woods when they are done.

The characters to create are young which adds +2 Dex and -2 Str, Con and Wis.
All that after 15 point buy. You also get 2 points for background skills. Which you'll need for your daily chores.

Starting equipment will be a set of peasant's clothes. And stuff every household should have and are on the cp price range.

Hardest challenge I guess will be finding a matching avatar.

There are two families in town with kids. Which determines that all are human and you get to select from two last names.

Allowed classes are
Sorcerer
Rogue
Commoner
Oracle
Witch
Hunter (young template on the companion. Only small companions)
Shaman

If you know other classes, that don't require special training and are d6 or d8 I might expand that list.

The challenges will be for kids, which means the adults of the village could easily solve those issues. But the goal would be to keep them a secret so the kids can solve them alone.

It is just a crazy idea I want to try out. So if this sounds to you like it could be fun for a while, you're welcome to apply.

Carla Johnson is one of the kids of Gertrud "Butch" Johnson. She is pert when she feels safe and quick to hide behind others, when it's not. She has a pet weasel, that is always with her. Either hiding in her clothes, or sitting on her shoulder.

She doesn't like the work she has to do at the butchery, but it is better than accompanying her mother through the woods to check on the traps.

What she likes best is to play knight and princess and dragon at the ruins they found some years ago in the woods. Only issue is, who gets to play what, and who gets saved by whom from whom (Worst scenario that evolves regularly is when the princess saves the dragon from the knight, because the little brother, who didn't want to play the dragon in the first place starts crying).

Most of the info is found in the starting Gameplay post and the campaign descrition. The ruin is on the map, but has no description yet. It is some stone house with no roof, some wall and a tower.

Silver Crusade

How old are the kids? I'm guessing about 10-12 ish?

Definitely interested. Would be playing a young boy (Tobar Palar), a hunter with his young firepelt cougar pet "cat". The cat would be an incredibly smart, well trained cat (I'd take huntmaster and put the stat increase into intelligence).

There are some suggestions given about the age for young, which would be 8+1d6 for humans with non-training classes. The range for that would be 9 to 14 then. But as it's about kids and not adolescent youth, I guess more like 6-12

How would you feel about a summoner whose eidolon is something like an imaginary friend who became real one day? I'm thinking Calvin and Hobbes vibes, though more in the vein of hiding that your imaginary friend is real and somewhat mischievous.

Summoner with Eidolon would definitely be too powerful. Even though it fits the d6/d8 requirement of the classes it is on purpose not on the list.

Will there be leveling or will this be a just a fun play date?

How do you feel about the Kineticist? It's a class I know nothing about, just as the kid I'd be playing.

It's mostly for the fun. We might get to the point where we level to 2, but not fast. But it makes no sense at all to go all the way to level ten with that setup.

Kineticist also fulfills the requirements.

As an additional information: This is no two week search for Mr. and Mrs. Right here. So if you're interested and have your basic questions answered, bring an avatar that looks the part and as soon as we got enough characters with the right attitude on board, we'll start.

The character idea (beyond he numbers) is what counts most to me. The exact stats for that can be made up on the go.

Aw, I wanted to make a kid with a giant chicken with arms. His name was even gonna be Mr. Squawks. Nevertheless, I'll solider on. Not sure what else I'll make, but I'll bring something.

Ed: Whoops, accidentally edited the post. Still, thanks for answering my question.

Bard is ok. And I invited you to bring other ideas, so no need to be sorry about the questions.

Here is Tobar, my 11 year old boy Hunter with incredibly intelligent Cougar friend.

For absolutely no good reason I decided that his family is of Varisian descent. If this doesn't fit, let me know.

He doesn't realize that he is a Hunter channeling Divine Power.

I think he is mechanically correct. Young. Companion ends up being tiny which is about right for a young small cat.

The stats look good (as in according to the given preconditions). That cat is wow. Invulnerable and deadly dangerous. I guess all will be hiding behind that cat, when it comes to a fight.

But the backstory collides latest with the sheep and a crucial decision is missing.

As parents you have the option to choose Gertrud and Randolf Johnson or Will and Shelly Branston.
The Johnsons own the local butcher's shop. Gertrud is the butcher and also hunts for meat.
Will and Shelly Branston are farmers.
Sorry that I wasn't clear about that. So far the names were only written in the one gameplay post and I hadn't mentioned it here.

I haven't set the location anywhere specific in Golarion, so Varisian decent is ok. But so far we have no sheep in the village, so sheep herding is not available at the present.

One more thing: If you want to keep your last name, then you'd be adopted, with the two families to choose from.

I'm interested. Can I still apply or isn't there any room left?

Ah, I hadn't noticed the other posts. Busy with family stuff today, I'll get everything corrected tomorrow

Do you want me to change the animal companion to something else? Wasn't trying to overpower things, I just like pussy cats as pets :-) :-)

I just had an idea. Not legal by the rules but it seems to me to WEAKEN the character so I thought I'd ask

Replace the animal companion with a familiar instead. Cat, of course.

So far we got two worked out characters and with you two more interested. So, yes there still is a place.

I'm just worried, it might do all the fighting alone and leaving nothing for you and the other kids. A familiar would be too weak (none of them do any damage, only 1 non lethal on a hit). Before the first fight I'll do some statistics. Probable solution: Take away the free weapon finesse it got for being tiny (I guess it's from that, as you got two feats listed and animal companion only gets one at 1st level). That would reduce the attack to +2. With three attacks that would be about the range, the kids end up too for to hit and damage.

Thanks! Would a Wood Oracle be okay?

Sure. You got the point that you need to select one of the two families with kids from the village as your parents?

Got it. My character will be one of the Branstons' sons.

Sorry to ask, but I'm working on my crunch, and I've got a couple questions. How much gold are we allowed exactly? Does the "extra feat" rule still applies? And do we have to choose traits?

Thank you in advance!

You get two traits. The extra feat is only if you take commoner. You get no gold to start with. You get a set of peasant's clothes and may collect stuff that is around for free or is listed in the book for coppers.

Like a club (stick from the woods), twine, chalk, a candle, such things.

It was just pointed out to me that as kids we would count as small (at least if in the age range 6-9 with the associated modifiers on CMB/CMD/attack/AC and stealth. This might be of interest for your build.

This sounds like a fun game.
I was thinking witch with a thrush familiar. (little talking bird, bonus to diplomacy)
Two traits, OK
Feats? Skills? Standard for the character class and one bonus for human racial? Or?

Grand Lodge

Here's Tarjun!

Crunch is ready for review.

I'll add the fluff tomorrow.

Feats and skills are standard for the class. And the human extra feat. No changes to the rules here.

Seen no errors with at a first glance. But I saw you took CLW as one of your two known spells. As Clara Johnson already took the Heal Hex, you could save that and take something else. But as you wish.

Grand Lodge

Thanks! I changed it for Cause Fear.

I'm fine with any solution you come up with. Not trying to mini max with this character :-)

So who belongs to the Johnson family so far? I want to know who my siblings will be.

So far we have:
Name - Class - Family - Player
Clara Johnson - Witch - Johnson - Foxy Quickpaw
Tobar Palar - Hunter - ? - pauljathome
Tarjun - Wood Oracle - Branston - Ythiel
Jewel Branston - Witch - Branston - ? (no worries I don't mind having two witches)
and Simeon wanted to bring someone

Did I miss anyone?

Here's my character, crunch is done, fluff is coming.

Ok, here is Tobar Johnson. Only very slightly changed (now has Profession Butcher and Farmer, is now only 9 years old)

Clara Johnson wrote:

I'm your "big" brother :-). By the way, sometimes in your profile you're Clara, sometimes Carla.

Also, you've left out a CRUCIAL piece of information. What is the name of your Weasel? :-).

Now we just have to figure out how your Weasel and Brina (my young cougar) interact with each other :-)

Thanks for the hint. I fixed that.
