push/drag are both x5 weight, but yeah training does become an issue. Also derp on me for forgetting about take 10's and 20's

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Well Lynn probably shouldn't try to take 20 (climb every which way including those ways that lead to certain failure) on this check, but yeah.
Also this entire endeavor will require about 200 feet + whatever you end up tying Kalkamedes with so far (Rhinshin has various pre-cut lengths of silk rope that add up to 50', Sleeping Sword has 50' of hemp rope, Lynn has 50' of silk rope, Kala has 50' of silk rope. which is 200' exactly, meaning you might have to jump to grab those ropes you might leave behind. Figure out among yourselves who is leaving what behind.

![]() |

"Uh, if we need to leave ropes on one side of the canyon, I am happy to leave mine behind. The Way of the Sleeping Sword teaches that attachment to material possessions is a barrier to the clear flow of one's ki."

![]() |

Perception : 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Almaas raises an eyebrow although he only overhears Sleeping Sword’s statement from below.
”My dear sleeping sword, please do not forget that a community also needs funds to prosper and that although some monks believe that poverty is a path to wisdom I can assure you that wealth can be a path to strive for as well! Especially, if we want to ensure that the whole community can thrive and survive through fair commerce and through honest trade!“ he shouts up.

![]() |

"Uh, what's that now youngster? You want a few coppers and an honest maid? Is that what you said? What an esoteric order you must belong to, eh youngster? A warrior needs only sword and spirit! This is the Way of the Sleeping Sword!"
Best not to tell them about the Hunger. They wouldn't understand.

If Kala's class feature says that your animal companion counts as a druid's animal companion then you get a +4 to handle animal checks with that particular animal companion. That's +8 for Kala. It is one of those rules that Paizo only sorta tells you about in order to make you ruin your books via page flipping (Hunter class, Druid Class, Handle Animal) and buy all new ones. Devilishly clever of them. It always gets me every time I have to look up line of sight when casting spells in the dark (combat (range and cover), magic (targeting spells), environment (lighting effects), conditions (blindness), spells (invisibility), toss books across room in fit of rage, later, buy new books).
So assuming Kala can get Stinky to do what she wants eventually (see above, +8, yadda yadda yadda). (Kala could take 20 on handle animal and spend some time trying to coax him to move to the top of the next wall without her--because the climb DC is 22 and Kala fell prone on her first attempt to get off the ground). There is also a case to be made that badgers rarely climb down 10-stories of anything and you might have to push him to go down as well if Kala is not going to carry him (and even then). If Kala can't convince him to go without her via pushing for whatever reason he hangs out and waits for her to move because of Kala's heel command. ...
Since the DC is 5 for climbing the rope next to the cliff-face (assuming you are not climbing fast, or taking damage) Kala can't fail going down and so does not have to roll the remaining 13 Climb checks (once per move action at 1/4 speed). Likewise Stinky can just move using his climb speed down the rope. Since he is climbing the canyon wall though his DC is 22 like everyone else, but because he has a climb speed he only needs to roll once to see if he can manage the wall and gets a +8 to do so. He could have taken 10 (everyone can just now because there is no immediate threat) but would have fallen 100 ft and taken 10d6 damage. I'm going to mention the +8 to climb checks because you don't want your already stinky badger falling 100 ft and becoming even stinkier. As he made both rolls, he makes it to the top of the opposite canyon wall (if you can get him to go). Did anyone tie a rope to him? ;) "Stinky! Come back down!"
Wow! Thanks for the information. That's very helpful. So in lieu of all of that info, Kala will (retroactively) take 20 to coax push Stinky to climb to the bottom and take 20 again to push him to climb to the top. She'll tie her 50' rope around him, plus one more length of rope from whoever will provide it. At this rate, dawn may come sooner than we'd like.

![]() |

Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 17
So here's Stinky's climb roll for going up the cliff, which per our illustrious GM should've had a +8 tacked on to it. So he's sitting pretty at a 25 vs. the DC 22. So now he's at the top of the cliff with a rope tied around his belly and dangling over the edge. When the first person climbs up (maybe Lynn without any of the gear she's carrying?), his survival instinct will kick in, and he'll fight with all his might to avoid being dragged over the edge of the cliff. Wolverines are pretty stubborn and scrappy, so fingers crossed!

![]() |

Lynn would be okay with this, if someone brought her gear with them when they got hauled up.
Lynn waited till Stinky made it to the top "Well at least getting everyone back up will be easy."
She thought about how much the tiny badger might be able to pull up and dropped both her and Angela's backpacks along with her rapier and pistol. After making sure she was offloaded of most of her gear she grabbed the rope and gave it a tug.
"Hope you're ready Stinky time to show the horses that badgers are strong too!"
climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Appologies to Kala (and Stinky), I keep (and probably started everyone else) calling Stinky a badger when in fact he is a small wolverine. "Badgers? Bangers? We don't need no stinking badger."
The party slowly lowers and then elevates Kalkamedes down into the crevass and up again to the opposite side.
Continuing onward and upward into the highlands the air grows crisp and the scattered stands of woodland are increasingly made of tall dark evergreens, and above them the dark shapes of mountains, and the twinkling vault of a stunningly clear night sky.

![]() |

”This was incredible teamwork! And I am sure that we will be able to accomplish a lot by thinking together and acting together as one team!“

![]() |

"I'm glad Stinky here was able to pull me up the clifface. We'll just have to collect our ropes when we make the journey back home, much easier than to go through setting everything back up again." Lynn bounced excitedly, and a little more tiredly than before next to the lead rope on Kalkamedes.
"Let's just hope this old goat get's us to our destination before he wakes up."

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Almaas swears he can hear growling, but sees nothing about besides Stinky who could reasonably make such a noise. Likewise nothing attacks so the party moves on.
Later, they are not quite so lucky.
*********
Great bands of stars sweep across the cloudless night sky, they and the light spell cast upon Kalkamedes illuminates a series of game trails that chase through the mountain shrubs and berry bushes. Almaas and Rhinshin hear it first and then see the vague outlines.... a pair of bears one small and one large foraging in the field. The larger bear bellows at the two scouts.
Once the PC sees the threat they can make a Knowledge (nature) check and open all the spoilers that apply.

Both critters are within range of Sleeping Sword's darkvision.

"Uh, whatever that is, it is large and it sounds upset! Perhaps it is territorial and we should go around it? The Way of the Sleeping Sword teaches that it is a foolish warrior who confronts a rival on that rival's home turf."

![]() |

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Kala is surprised by a prolonged sneezing fit, her exuberantly loud sneezes overlay the bellowing of the bear and distorting her perception of the sound. And of course, not being Chuck Norris, she cannot sneeze with her eyes open. "AAAH-CHOOOO! AAAH-CHOOOO! What the--AAAH-CHOOOO! AAAH-CHOOOO! AAAH-CHOOOO! ...heck! AAAH-CHOOOO! AAAH-CHOOOO!" ...and so on.
It appears that she may be allergic to bears.

![]() |

Stinky gets a whiff of the rich odor of bear. His hackles immediately rise, a low growl issuing from deep in his throat as he bares his wickedly sharp teeth in a vicious snarl. He sidles closer to his temporarily incapacitated Kala, placing himself between her and the potential threat. If any bear wants to attack her, it'll have to go through an violently protective, angry wolverine first.

Lynn is able to tell what the creature is and the meaning behind the roar before she even looks down from her gaze at the stars. Her hands go immediately to the lead rope on Kalkamedes and attempts to pull him to a halt and back away from the bear.
"Brown bears, pretty common in this region, surprising we haven't seen any till now honestly. We should keep our distance and show we mean no harm. Quickly if i might add. We can take a few minutes to detour a safe distance around the two. No need to kill a mother and it's cub if we don't need to."
wish those happened in the opposite order but i'll take what i can get XD I really hope we don't have to fight them we kill the mother and the cub will surely die by itself. If we absolutely must we may be able to scare them off but that's last resort in my mind.

Still between Lynn and Sleeping Sword the group are just able to slow Kalkamedes to a stop.
The large bear still does not look happy with the party. The cub seems torn between shying away, and staying by its mother.
Kala Knowledge checks are usually (outside of a library) free actions. You see someone you know from a rumor and you recognize them with a knowledge (local) check (i.e. your memories of what you know of them). So if you want to do something else, now is the time.

Forgive me. I thought the sneezing fit would be her action.
Finally finished sneezing, Kala decides that Sleeping Sword has the right of it. She kneels down to calm Stinky, using her most soothing voice.

That's fine. I just wanted to make sure that the party's druidy character didn't miss the chance to do something thinking they had already done it.
That and the bear cub amid its fear and confusion is probably thinking what a hideous mother that wolverine has.
Angela?

Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Kala calmly steps up to within 30 feet of the mother bear, making sure not to make direct eye contact. As she walks, she continues using the low pitched, soothing voice that she had successfully used to calm Stinky, increasing the volume just enough to catch the bear's attention. Once in place, she assumes a non-threatening body position, low to the ground, and continues droning to the mother bear.
"Everyone, please avoid making eye contact with the bears. They will think it's a challenge and attack you. Hello, Bear. We won't hurt your cub. We're just going to go around you. Nothing bad needs to happen. We'll be out of your way soon. We understand why you are wary. It's okay..." She will continue in this way until there's a reason to stop.

All super-mellow from Kala's near-lullaby, Stinky just tags along with his person. When she stops, he snuffles around her boots for a bit as her words continue to cascade around him.
There's still that smell of bear though, and they're awfully close. He keeps one eye on them, ready to jump into action to protect Kala if necessary.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The bear snorts. The cub moves off to the west and its mother follows keeping an eye on the party until it passes out of sight.

Kalkamedes |

Lemme know if you want to do anything between that last post and this one like: loot the berries, chat, change positions, or what have you. I'll give folks some time to post.
Over the course of another two hours, the rough, mountainous scrubland gradually flattens and gives way to thicker copses of trees sustained by a series of chilly, narrow streams. Kalkamedes’s trail meanders northward.

![]() |

Lynn's grip on the rope slowly loosened after the bear mother turned and walked away. "That could have gone far worse.. Quick thinking Kala. Shall we continue or wait for them to wander off some more?"

![]() |

"Uh, well done there young lady. Indeed, to win without fighting is best!"
Glad to have avoided the enormous mama-bear, Sleeping Sword lets Kalkamedes guide the group northwards.
"This country is quite pleasant really. More hospitable than the Crown of the World, certainly. Uh, except for he razor brambles and the angry bears, of course."

The party is moving through broken stands of scrub and trees when some of the party members become aware of a bird calling from somewhere in the woods. Other birds soon reply.

![]() |

Earlier, once they're in the clear from the bears...
Heat rises to Kala's cheeks at the praise from her companions. Accustomed to a grunt and a nod from her family when she did well, she has no idea how to respond to all these words of praise from so many people. All she can muster is a mumbled "Um...thanks."
Immediately stooping to Stinky to hide her embarrassment and social awkwardness, she gives him some quick, rough scratches. "Who's a good boy? You are! What a good boy! You saved us from the bears! Yes you did! Such a good boy!"
She then swiftly picks a handful of berries, wraps them in a couple of large leaves she finds, and tucks them in a pocket.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

![]() |

"Uh, you hear that? Bird calls. But not night-birds. Something is not right. Be on your guard youngsters!"
Sleeping Sword watches the woods. He activates a Wand of Shield of Faith as a precaution, slipping the wand back in his belt after casting.

![]() |

After the bears be fore moving on.
Angela reaches up and gives the large woman a pat on the back. "That was beautifully handled!" She does take a moment to collect some of the berries curious as to what variety they might be and if they are edible or even useful for alchemic purposes.
After a minute or so she stands up, wiping her hands on a handkerchief. "Alight, should we get moving then?"
Back to the present
"A Cyan Jay! Jays, given the response from over there. But unless something's woken them up, there's no way that they should be awake at this hour. Might be people communicating with each other."

![]() |

Kala's eyes narrow. The possible threat is enough to quickly banish her chagrin at failing to place the birds' calls. She raises her shield and measures her voice so that, hopefully, only her allies nearby can hear: "We should surround Kalkamedes to protect him. Loosely, so we're not an easy target all together."

Throwing caution (and the plan that she suggested moments ago) to the wind, Kala calls out: "Stinky! Heel!" and makes for the disturbance ahead. It's dark in the forest, and she can hardly see.
